I've read other books by this author, and they have all missed the mark for me. This one was no exception, unfortunately, as it sounded quite interesting. The pacing was off, and the twists weren't all that surprising. I never really felt connected to the characters, which made it impossible to care about what happened to them.
On one hand I found this to be a very slow starter and it struggled to hold my interest because it did drag a bit for my tastes but it was also not what I was expecting at all. Its very cleverly written and although I did guess the twist, its a really unique concept and the book just felt so different from anything I'd Ive read recently which was really refreshing. I was never quite sure what was happening or who to believe and it was very well done. Just not to my taste
I predicted the twist early on in the book, which is what is taking off a couple stars. However, for those who do not see the twist coming this is a truly remarkable read. The ending still contained some surprises for me. I think the characters were crafted so well, and I feel empathy for all of them...well maybe not all of them after the last few pages. Overall, despite catching onto the twist early on I still thoroughly enjoyed this book; I read it in one sitting!
Thanks to netgalley, J A Baker and the publishers for the arc of this book. This started off quite slowly and didn’t seem to pick up speed for my taste. That said, the premise of the book and the overall execution was great. 3/5
"The Woman at Number 19" by J.A. Baker is a gripping psychological thriller that delves into the depths of grief, obsession, and the unraveling of reality. Esther, who has experienced immense loss with the death of her husband and children in a car accident, is struggling to cope with her grief. Her loneliness and guilt drive her to watch the woman who lives at number 19, as she seeks to make amends for her perceived failures in protecting her own children.
As the unexplainable incidents start occurring in Esther's own home, she becomes increasingly fearful for her safety. Simultaneously, the woman at number 19's behavior becomes more erratic and unpredictable, adding to the sense of mystery and tension in the story. As Esther's grip on reality starts to slip, the reader is taken on a thrilling and suspenseful journey, questioning who the mysterious woman is and why Esther is so obsessed with her.
Baker's writing is skillful and keeps readers on the edge of their seats, with well-paced suspense and twists that keep the plot intriguing. The portrayal of grief and its impact on a person's psyche is raw and heartfelt, adding depth to the story. The characters are well-developed, flawed, and complex, making them relatable and adding to the tension of the narrative.
"The Woman at Number 19" is a compelling and chilling psychological thriller that will keep readers guessing until the final pages. Fans of the genre will be drawn into the dark and mysterious world created by J.A. Baker, making it a perfect summer read for 2023.
This book was almost a DNF for me. I just couldn’t get into it. I found the twist to be very obvious. This book was sad and dull. Not for me.
Thank you NetGalley, J.A. baker and Boldwood Books for the ARC!
This book was sent to me electronically by Netgalley for review. Thanks to the publisher and the author. Mystery and intrigue in this novel kept me reading. The main character is a sad person who watches others. She is not sure what to do. I kept wondering if she was watching herself. Her life is not what she wants. I did not guess the total ending although there were clues. The foreshadowing almost gave it away. This is an emotionally disturbing story that is fiction but reads like nonfiction at times. The images are thought provoking. I actually reread part of the descriptions. I can’t get those out of my mind. I liked this book. I really liked this book. I would give it more than five stars. This is a must read. Do not miss this.
Where do I start? I have so much to say about this book but it'd be hard to do so without giving away any spoilers so I'm just going to try to be very brief.
The woman at number 19 was a very interesting read. I found it hard to get into it at first, but once I did, I really enjoyed it and couldn't put it down.
To be completely honest, I am not usually a big fan of books with an unreliable narrator (not a spoiler, it is mentioned in the blurb), but I decided to give this one a go and I'm so glad I did!
The pacing was perfect, the characters interesting, the atmosphere absolutely amazing, and the plot quite original, even though I guessed the main twist relatively early. Even then, it still held a few interesting surprises, and kept my attention until the end.
I would definitely recommend this book.
Thank you Netgalley for a chance to read this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Geeeeeez! Well that was not what I expected at all! Great book though! This book went in a whole other direction than I thought it would! It had some suspense, intrigue, action, murder, lots of mind games, and a ton of twists and turns! The storyline was very interesting and kept me glued to my Kindle! I definitely recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
