This book is a thrilling addition to the world of romantic fantasy! The Rebel King takes us deeper into the lives of its morally gray characters, intertwining themes of loyalty, power, and sacrifice. The complex relationship between the protagonists, filled with tension and heartache, embodies the “forbidden love” trope, making their struggles all the more compelling.
Gina L. Maxwell’s writing is engaging and fluid, pulling me into a vivid world where alliances are fragile, and betrayal lurks around every corner. The plot twists keep the narrative fresh and unpredictable, adding layers of intrigue that kept me guessing until the very end. The character arcs are well-developed; each choice the characters make is steeped in the emotional weight of their pasts and their desires for the future.
Overall, The Rebel King delivers a satisfying blend of romance and adventure, and while it has some pacing issues in parts, the emotional payoff and the gripping conclusion make it a worthy read. Fans of fantasy romance will find a lot to love here, and I’m excited to see where Maxwell takes us next!
The Dark King was one of my first urban romantasy reads and it really stayed with me. So, I'm very excited that I was able to read The Rebel King as an ARC!
I'll start by saying that for some reason I didn't realize these were standalones, which actually made me more excited to read the second book in the Deviant Kings series because I was skeptical about how The Dark Kind ended.
The Rebel King was enjoyable! I did feel like the plot was a bit rushed (which seems to be common feedback), and despite the title of the book, Tiernan didn't seem as... rebellious (for lack of better term) as I was expecting. However, I do love a MMC that is an absolute cinnamon roll for his FMC.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoy the urban setting, secondary characters, and political intrigue in this series.. I'm looking forward to seeing what's next for the Verran brothers. Thank you to the author, Gina L. Maxwell, and Entangled Publishing for an ARC of The Rebel King.
What can we expect from Gina Maxwell at this point ? She is freaking amazing! I love her writing and this second book on the trilogy was just amazing! I love how she mixes her story so well!
The push and pull between Tiernan and Fiona is amazing .. and exactly what you come to expect and love from Gina and her writing.
The story continues in the world she created with The Dark King, and we learn about the next in line for the throne. Tiernan has always felt like the spare since his brother was the next in line for the throne and the one with that responsibility. He has played his way through life and fell from Fiona in the process. Fiona has never exactly felt she fit in with everyone around her, for reasons you learn as you get deeper into their story.
This is a great middle book in the trilogy and I cannot wait to see where it continues.
I really did love the first book “The Dark King”, but this one didn’t hit was well with me. I needed a little more substance, but it was definitely entertaining. The Rebel King captivated me from the beginning. This story was a steamy read, but I felt it was a bit rushed.
Even with that being said, I will be picking up Gina L. Maxwell’s next book. She sure does know how to steam up the pages…
I want to thank NetGalley, Gina L. Maxwell and Entangled Publishing, LLC | Entangled: Amara for the e-ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are honest, my own and left voluntarily.
While this book is the second in the series it is not necessary to read them in order. (I didn't). This is a captivating and steamy romance that will leave readers swooning for more. With its compelling characters, lush setting, and passionate romance, it's a must-read for fans of the fae, royal romance and lovers of love stories that defy the odds.
Ms, Maxwell delivers a story brimming with intrigue, forbidden desire, and sizzling chemistry. The dynamic between the protagonists is electric, and their tumultuous relationship unfolds with all the intensity and drama befitting a royal romance. Highly recommended.
I received an arc if this book in exchange for an honest review,
A good entry into the spicy paranormal romance genre! The characterization is well developed, and the plot has lots of twists & turns to keep us engaged throughout. There’s great banter & lots of steaminess!
Thanks to Netgalley, the publisher, and author for the copy of this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Very enjoyable read.

Gina L. Maxwell's Deviant Kings series continues with The Rebel King and middle Verran brother, Tiernan. This is a dark and passionate fantasy romance that directly follows the events of The Dark King>, which I enjoyed immensely. We met Tiernan and Fiona in that first tale and from the start, you know that something is going on between those two. Secrets abound though and it seems like the universe itself is striving to keep them apart. With family obligations and royal politics, as well as a mystery, and Tiernan's dark desires Gina L. Maxwell has created a captivating tale and I can't wait to read the conclusion in The Vicious King.

The second book in the series is just as good as the first! Tiernan finds himself about to be crowned king of the Dark Face after his brother abdicates the throne and to do so, he needs a wife. Fiona is an employee of Tiernan's family and the chemistry between them is so hot. I loved that both Tiernan and Fiona were battling their own demons while also navigating a world on the brink of war and their own romance. Fiona is fiery and isn't afraid to hold back and Tiernan is so obsessed with her, I can't get over it. I also loved that the plot was solid and brought more to the book than just romance.
The first book in this series was honestly hard for me to get through and this one was pretty similar. I don't know what it is about the story but I don't get hooked. I like the concept of the book, but the book just doesn't hit the mark for me.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but I was a fan of the first one in this series, so I was happy to return to the world. It’s very different than the first one, but it’s a strong, sexy read.
this was hot and spicy. A cool fantasy romance and I enjoyed it. this was fun but not alot of genuine substance.
Hmmm , might have to go for a 3.5 for this one.
I absolutely LOOOVED ‘The Dark King’ and was very hopeful for this one to be just as great !
I felt that this one was a bit rushed and Tiernan could have been much more rebellious, I mean the book is literally called ‘The Rebel King’ ! I felt like he should have been way more brooding and devious!
That being said, I loved how he had such a soft spot for Fiona and just wanted to be her life-long protector, ugh my heart! And the spice was pretty decent, nothing overwhelming.
Also the ending was super rushed, especially the whole coronation scene, felt very unrealistic. Ehhh .
I will still continue on with the series in June when the third book comes out , but hopefully won’t go farther downhill. 🤞🏻
This book had big shoes to fill because I loved the first book in the series. This series has set up some great paranormal world building without it being too much and distracting you from the rest of the storyline while also bring it with the fae 🔥🔥🔥.
Our hero has always been the spare. His brother is king and so he lived a carefree life. That is until his brother steps down and suddenly he not only has some responsibilities but he has all the responsibilities. As King his secret relationship with his housekeeper is even more secret, and top it off war is brewing and he needs to step up.
I have to say I did like the glimpses of these two main characters in the previous book because it gave you a hint more of their depth. I almost felt cheated a bit of their relationship by not seeing their start but I did enjoy them together. After the way this one ended I’m looking forward to the next instalment.
I enjoyed the first book in this series and was excited to read the second. For some reason, this one didn't click with me like the first. Tiernan was interesting, and I liked much of his inner conflict, but the romance aspect wasn't working for me. Maybe it was because the OTP was in a relationship before the novel's start. So, I felt like I was dumped into the story. Whatever the reason, this was just an okay read for me. I give it a 3/5 stars.
Very interesting series about fae in modern day Las Vegas. I was really excited to read based on the description. I have not read the first book (They are standalones) but now I plan too. I received an ARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Oh man oh man I need Finnian’s book like now!!!!! These Verran Fae brothers are everything and I'm loving them so much! Tiernan and Fiona are perfect! The sassiness they both have is on point and I love their back and forth banter! Their chemistry is undeniably hot. I really loved seeing Caiden and Bryn again!!!
The Rebel King was so good. It was exciting, hottt, sexy, mysterious and got a little emotional for Fi. The growth Tier made but yet he kept true to himself was amazing. This world is so fun and full of secrets and these boys are so hot.
I cannot wait to see where Finnian'S story is headed! Oh and I NEED more of Dmitri, I'm so curious about his back story and would love to see him get closer with Finni! Looking forward to what’s coming next!!!!!
Gina Maxwell is a wizard at writing broody males and specifically the Fae world. This was a stunning addition to the first book and absolutely love how this took off on the story line in a direction that made sense.
The Rebel King is the second book in the Deviant King series. I fell inlove with Tiernan and Fiona, more than I already was as their appearances in The Dark King makes them stand out. Seeing more of their world and all the supernatural creatures that live there.
Gina writing flows so perfectly and keeps you hooked from beginning to end. This series was the first fantasy series I got my hands on as an adult and it opened up a whole new world for me to explore. Cant wait to see what else Gina has up her sleave.
