Y'all Tiernan is next level. He kicked ass and took names and did the damn thing!!
I loved Caiden and Bryn, but Tier, I think he's most definitely going to be my favorite of the brothers. Although, Finnan and a certain vampire have piqued my curiosity 👀👀
Speaking of curiosity, was I googling different types of whips and how to use them? Yes, yes I was.
Highlights of this book was the banter between Tier and basically anyone, I had some major LOL moments all throughout the book. I loved all the references thrown in, especially Twilight
"But I- much like the Cullens- am a faster and excellent driver. You, my friend, are shit at it"
But my favorite was at the very end when he decided to refer to himself as Goldilocks because the crown fits "just right"
I wasn't quite sure how this would wrap up, but I'm glad a certain dark fae got the boot and Goldilocks and Little Red got the happy ending they deserved.

This is the first book I’ve read by Gina Maxwell and I’ve now added every other book to my TBR. I loved this. It was the perfect length and had the perfect amount of tension. You always were wondering what was coming next. Tiernan and Fiona were wonderful. I wanted to punch both of them a little bit, but I think that adds to how well they were written. I won’t give any spoilers, but this book is worth it if only for the twists and turns that have you dropping your jaw every single time. I also loved learning about Caiden and Bryn, which is getting me to read the Dark King next.
Disclaimer: I was given this book as an ARC with the intent to leave an unbiased review, which I am giving now voluntarily.
The Rebel King centers around the politics of a fantasy world and a forbidden romance. It took me a very long time to get through this book. I just couldn’t get interested enough to come back to it and kept starting something new. I think that, if you’re going to read this one, make sure you read the first one beforehand. It’s not that this can’t be a stand-alone, but there seemed to be more going on in the storyline than I was fully part of. Specifically, the characters seemed underdeveloped.
DNF at 59%. I loved The Dark King. The Rebel King though, felt like a totally different book. While TDK was easily to follow and flowed well, this one was not. There is so much repetition and politics (especially in the beginning) that not only lost my attention but got quite confusing too. I liked the MC’s but there is little to show their connection but for a few spicy situations… making it difficult to feel anything. It all felt very disjointed overall. Too many people, too much going on and changing. I got to the ‘missing girls’ she was eager to find and literally had no idea what was going on. Did I miss something, who was suddenly missing? I had to call it quits. Unfortunately, this one just didn’t work for me.
I will say I am intrigued by Finn’s story, especially if it involves a certain vampire.

This is probably a 3.5 for us. This book was a letdown compared to its predecessor. Some being Fiona just isn’t as likable as Brynn. The biggest struggle though is that we don’t buy into Fiona and T as couple. Literally all they do is have sex! They know nothing about each other outside face value not even their middle names and not once do they have a get to know each other conversation to remedy that.
T is not next in line as king and feels unworthy. Fae are getting beaten and dying. After they attack Fiona’s mom she goes undercover as a stripper to try snd infiltrate the group. She does and then gets kidnapped. T and the Night Watch rescue her and capture Light court king who has captured and is using Dimitri’s sister as his conjurer. Turns out he is still one step ahead, wanting to be captured so he could get something from the temple where the dungeons are. T is crowned King and Fiona is going to be his mate.
Here’s the thing: a lot happens in this book but it’s not explained well not to mention that it’s basically the same plot as the first book but in reverse. In book 1, we get Brynn trying to discover herself snd finally learning her parents aren’t her parents. In this one we get Fiona, learning her mom isn’t really her mom and then trying to discover herself. It was annoying to say the least. Apparently T and Fiona are both into BDSM but we get one and a half scenes with that and it’s gone all the other sec is normal. Total missed opportunity as is talking about blood sharing to keep Fiona young and not showing it. T and Fiona were already banging when the book starts for months so we have no clue about their true starting point. Lastly the author dropped in Dimitri’s sister being taken and random scenes with Finnian, T’s younger brother, that made no sense except to set up his book.
Overall this does not read as a stand-alone and a lot of connecting information was missing. Like being dropped into the middle of a movie and going what is happening, how’s we get here.
Would still read Finnian’s book though!
Holy cow this book was so freaking good!! I loved book one with Caiden and Bryn but wow Tiernan and Fiona are top tier. I loved their relationship so much. It started out as sex of course but they really developed into close friends, partners, and ultimately lovers. Also the plot was so good. Between the political drama, court happenings and swoony romance, I was absolutely hooked. I loved seeing the characters from the first installment and how they fit into book two. I couldn't wait to read this one and now I feel the same way about book three. I thought the alternating POV's were so good and I really loved being inside each of these character's heads. The spice was GREAT and I expected nothing less honestly. I liked the conversation around the BDSM as well because Maxwell made it spicy but also really informative. The writing was so engaging and I was on the edge of my seat. This a must-read series for sure and I need book three immediately! Thank you to Entangled and Netgalley for providing me with an e-ARC to read and review.
Honestly, this book got me out of my book slump. It is so well written. My favorite thing was that we don't wait for the action for 40 something pages but instead the book starts with an event happening so you are instantly hooked. I loved the characters and how they are personified.
I haven't read the book before this, so ıve read the rebel king as a standalone. At first I was scared that ı wouldn't understand the world but it is so well explained and pulls you right in. As an avid crime documentaries fan, I enjoyed the mystery and how realistic it was. The events weren't exaggerated and kept me wondering. It was just right.
The character development was EVERYTHING. I loved how their relationship escalated and we could see the process of every decision and move. Tiernan and Fiona's relationship and the intimacy made the book one of my favorites. The emotion behind the spicy scenes is what made things so much better. The description, the writing skills and the spice combined, Tiernan and Fiona came to life in mind.
The way that they cherished each other and how Tiernan spoke about Fiona made me tingle. Seriously tingle. Tiernan and Fiona had different things and problems going on in their lives and we got to see both sides. They communicated their personal problems to each other and helped each other grow. This is some serious "we will get through this together" book and Im so here for it.

If you haven't read the first book in the Deviant Kings series, I HIGHLY recommend you do before you pick this one up.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review and I genuinely cannot stop thinking about Fiona and Tiernan.
Tiernan never expected to be king but after his older brother abdicates he is thrust onto the throne and into the spotlight. Tiernan would rather keep up his playboy persona and not worry about keeping himself in check when his advisors do and say stupid sh*t. (I'm on Tiernan's side here, I wouldn't be able to do it.) To make his life more complicated, he knows that he can never marry for love now that he is king - which means leaving behind the love of his life Fiona.
Fiona has struggled with her relationship with Tiernan because not only is he a Fae Prince, but she's a human. And not human nobility either.
I absolutely loved getting the POV of both Tiernan and Fiona and fell even more in love with them than I had in the first book. Their story was fast paced, gripped me from the first page, and had some of the steamiest scenes I've had the pleasure of reading. Gina L. Maxwell knows how to WRITE SPICE.
There is more BDSM in this book - focused on whips/flogging this time so be aware of that if that is a trigger for you.
This book has it all. Spice, true love, courtly intrigue, and a quickly unravelling mystery. Thank you so much to Gina L. Maxwell and NetGalley for the ARC and I cannot wait to read the next one!!
The Rebel King was such an intriguing mystery romance. You e got humans murdering fae with a little bit of werewolves and vampires mixed in! Tiernan’s character development throughout the story was great. Initially didn’t like him and then started loving him! Fiona goes through it throughout this book. From being beaten to her entire world getting turned upside down, Fiona never shys away from who she is. I really enjoyed lots of aspects throughout this book. Overall 3 ⭐️
Thank you to Entangled Publishing, LLC and the author for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This book tore me apart (in a good way) and kept me wanting to read it. I could not put it down and I am in love with how this book came to be and how the story was told.
Gina does an amazing job of connecting the story from the forts book into this books as well even though it’s told from two new peoples perspective.
This is such a fun smut filled romance with a fae plot! There can be a little much happening in it but it’s fun !
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Gina L. Maxwell. Fantasy, Romance, erotica, BDSM.
I frickin LOVED this book. I frickin LOVE this series. This author has a fresh, crisp writing style and her characters are simply divine. Super sexy and very authentic. Each character has their own vivid personality.
Sin city was created by the dark fae, the Verran family has ruled for a very long time. Because of a curse, the king has stepped down. Being the next in line Tiernan only has 3 months until his coronation. This rebel prince is not ready. He's trying to be kingly, he's even curbing his dalliance with a certain fiery half-fae.
Fiona is trying to stay away from Tiernan, but she misses him. She's been around long enough to know they can't really have a future.
Then the killings start. Quickly getting out of hand. When Fiona becomes involved Tiernan can't deny his feelings for her. What's worse, she is about to learn a truth that will destroy everything she thinks she knows.
Tiernan has to find help.
Turning to the russian Mafia and a sexy as hell vampire. Things just get more interesting and the intrigue is nail biting!!!
I highly recommend this book! It's just fantastic.
I received this Advanced copy from NetGalley and Entangled publishing, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Fae in Sin City?! That’s all it took to hook me in when I picked up The Dark King (the first book in the Deviant Kings series) last year so I was very excited to get to revisit the world of the Dark Fae. Where The Dark King centers on the eldest Verran brother, Caiden (and his relationship with Bryn Meara), The Rebel King focuses on his successor in both book series and the throne, middle Verran brother, Tiernan.
The Rebel King continues what I enjoyed about the first book, a fantasy world entwined with reality by way of Las Vegas. But just like any good sequel, Maxwell expands on the lore, bringing us deeper into this fantasy world she has created.
Of course, at the heart of all of this is a love story between rebellious Tiernan and the fiery Fiona Jewel. For fans of “romantasy” via forbidden love, the relationship between Tiernan and Fiona will keep you engaged.
Overall, The Rebel King is a great continuation of the Deviant Kings and I already cannot wait to carry on within this series.
Thank you Gina L. Maxwell, Entangled Publishing, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Tiernan got the shock of his life when his brother abdicated the Dark Fae throne leaving it to him, the next in line. Will Tiernan be able to come to grips with his new role and leave his rebel ways behind? Let’s find out!
Read if you like: Dual POV, urban fantasy, fae, paranormal romance, Vegas craziness, BDSM, spice with a plot, the black sheep, the girl with a secret, sassy leading ladies, and deliciously dark yet king heroes.
Tiernan Verran was quite comfortable being the rebel, middle brother of Dark Fae Royalty. His life as life of the party was all he ever hoped to have. But that all changed when Caiden handed over the crown to Tier along with a whole lot of turmoil brewing with the Light Fae. This sudden change makes him realize he had more than he ever wanted to lose. He won’t be able to take the most important part of his life with him… Fiona. As Fiona realizes that her fling with the soon to be king might have had potential to be more, she hopes that Tier can find a way to rebel for their relationship.
Book 2 in the Deviant Kings trilogy by Gina L. Maxwell is a fun, quick, spicy, and emotional ride that keeps our Verran Dark Fae storyline going and broadens the magical world. I was expecting Tier to be snarky and angsty about his forced role but we got a depth that was unexpected and refreshing. Our Rebel King has more kicking around in his heart than meets the eye. Fiona also has her own problems within the fae world and as we discover more about her, we realize that everything is going to get even tricker for our duo. It was a fairly straightforward romance plot embroiled in a whole lot of magical being drama.
Speaking of drama, the Dark Fae, Light Fae, and many magical others find themselves with a common foe. Can Tiernan figure out what is going on and save his people and the woman he’s growing increasingly attached to? The fantasy plot in The Rebel King considerably broadens the magical world and brings with it more tricky situations and factions. After some front heavy worldbuilding, the plot drives forward with a lot of strategic action and ends with a revelation that sets up book 3 to be quite dynamic. Poor Finnian. What lies in store for “The Vicious King?”
Thank you to NetGalley for a review copy of The Rebel King.
THIS BOOK!!!
I was immediate sucked in. I went into this completely blind and was pleasantly surprised with it all!!!
The world Gina has created is both fascinating and addictive and I fell in love with both Bryn and Caiden as well as the side characters we meet throughout the book.
We start off meeting Caiden Verran, our sexy billionaire who owns the exclusive and ultra-luxe Nightfall hotel and casino in Vegas. Enter Bryn who thinks a weekend away on a free trip to Nightfall will ease the pain of her falling career. After an alcohol and lust filled night she finds herself married to Caiden. Little does she know Caiden is actually the Fae king of the Night Court.
Bryn is then used as a pawn for the Fae in a much bigger ploy for power but despite all the danger, she finds herself not wanting to leave, even if it was possible.
The twists and turns in this book was so good. I was kept guessing the whole book. It was full of surprise reveals, loads of fun side characters (Caiden brothers are the absolute best and can’t wait for their books) and the SPICE 🌶 wooh it was spicy!
Highly recommend this book
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars!
The Rebel King is the second book in the Deviant Kings series by Gina L. Maxwell. Please be aware to read the first book in the series, The Dark King, following the story of Caiden and Bryn.
The story follows Tiernan and Fiona as they try to navigate their relationship as Tiernan is meant to be crowned the king. Caiden (Tiernan's older brother) abdicated the throne and passed it along to Tiernan who has less then a year to learn his new responsibilities as heir apparent. Tiernan, known as "The Rebel King", never believed that he would ever become king and never wanted to be one. Fiona is the housekeeper/maid at the manor, but also has a sexual relationship with Tiernan. With everyone watching Tiernan, the only place for Fiona and Tiernan to be together is a place without security cameras, which is the dungeon. While Fiona is all for sex in the dungeon, Tiernan said its off limits, not wanting to revisit the BDSM scene. But as Tiernan learns about his new role as king, mysterious deaths start occurring and fae are being killed. It's his obligation to find out who is killing the fae. One of the victims is Fiona's mother, who is thankfully not killed but severely injured.
Like the first book, this one is super steamy with secret hookups and BDSM. The romance between the two is amazing as we get know them more. Of course, there's a fair amount of secrets that get revealed too!
I can't wait for the third book to come out, which will most likely be about the youngest Verran brother, Finnian.
Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for sending me an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I would like to thank Gina and Entangled publishing for giving me a copy to read in enhange for an honest review!!
Now this is considered a stand-alone within this series, BUT i do suggest reading the first one to get a but more more information on the oldest brother Caiden and his mate! Plus, i just love their story haha. The first book is more of a fated mates story as this leans more on the forbidden love side instead!
I am pleased to see our rebel prince get a book with his vixen Fiona! This was a bit different from the first book as Tiernan never wanted to be king, but seeing as the light king kept attempting to kill his brothers mate in order to kill him. His brother had no choice but to step down and force Tier to step up to be the next king. I loved how Fi would rebel against Tiernan and just be this amazing little firecracker in his life! Things start to take a turn when an organization starts killing off dark fae, which ends up attacking Fiona and her mother and turning her whole world and relationships upside down! The problem for Fiona and Tiernan is that they can't seem to stop thinking about each other no matter how hard they try. We meet two new characters along the way. Robert is a human almost 80 years old man who plays chess with Tier and is such a damn delight to read when he is included! And Dmitri Romanov, a legendary russian warrior who was turned into a vampire. We do get some very interesting plot twists that happen. And then the ending we get to see a look into the baby of the brothers start of his book which i cannot wait for!
I really enjoyed this book and would suggest it to anyone who loved the first or just wants to try a different type of romance fantasy!
We pick up soon after The Dark King book left off, with Tiernan easing into his new role as the King of the Dark Fae. Not crowned yet, he’s learning the ropes as heir apparent. He is completely avoiding any encounters with Fiona as she is a lesser fae, and would never be ‘worthy’ of being his consort. With that set up, I was unsure how different this entry would be from the previous books, it all felt pretty familiar.
Though the revelation was a bit far-fetched (hard to see how Fiona had been fooled for so long… kind of made her seem dumb) it did set up an interesting internal struggle. I liked the exploration of Fiona’s feelings about where she belongs, realizing she didn’t really fit in anywhere. The middle section where we get into the mystery and intrigue of the story was great! I was really interested in the investigation into the murders of Dark Fae around the city. Fiona going undercover was exciting and I honestly wasn’t sure who was behind it all.
However, my main issue with the book come from the resolutions of the problems. Though the author had built us to a precipice (how would Tiernan fix these things?!), the solutions were so anticlimactic that it felt like a deflating balloon.
For example the dissolution of the final contract (holding him back from Fiona) was so matter of fact - why did he even feel bound by it in the first place? It didn’t feel romantic, so much as I was confused as to why it took him so long to figure out a solution.
The ending did set up nicely for the next book, and I am curious as to how the overarching story will resolve itself.
Overall it feels like the story had potential but was really let down by the final third.
Read and reviewed this Advanced Reader Copy from NetGalley.
This was a DNF for me. Which absolutely sucks because I loved the first book!!! The writing somehow felt worse than the last book, and the overall vibes of the two main characters were just annoying.
Maybe I'll give it another shot when the next one comes out, but IDK.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me early access to this book.
The Rebel King is the unofficial second novel in this trilogy that the author promises you don’t need to read in order or all three at all. I however feel the need to read them in order to get the full story! The Dark King was a book I randomly came across at target that was on sale and looks interesting and essentially read it in one sitting. If you liked the first one, this one is fairly similar but with a different brother as the main focus. Both books are easy and quick reads with themes regarding fae and a fun twist on how Vegas was created. This book is rated for mature audiences for a good reason and okays on familiar relationships and what it’s like to let someone in to your tight nit family after a good reason not too. Overall, the book was a quick and easy read with a hefty dose of spice but this sophomore novel didn’t quite catch me like the first one did but I loved the updates from the original characters and the banter that is promised throughout.
This is not my usual genre, but I really love this series, and this second book may have even been better than the first. The characters are intriguing, and the plot is exciting. Highly recommend, but would be better to read the first book first. Will make everything clearer. Already looking forward to the next in the series.
