I received a copy of this book through Netgalley. This is my honest review.
Have you ever wondered what kind of creature Humpty Dumpty was. I know a lot of us have a picture of him as an egg like being (at least I do and I think that's thanks to the Little Golden Books). Well those egg-like beings are apparently called Dooples, because why not. Anyway, this is a book about a young Doople who wants to fly. He spends his days doing quite dangerous things for an egg like climbing trees. And one day he's flung from a tree branch into a wall, where like Humpty, he breaks. But Doople science has come a long way since Humpty's day and a scientist is able to put him back together. Except while he's relaxing in his shell-strengthening bath, another compound is added that makes him a super hero.
This was an okay story, but it's just the origin story. With the title, I was expecting to see the super hero action, but all we get here is what leads up to him becoming super. The illustrations were colorful, but felt almost muted in a way. I don't think I'd really want to read this book very many times before I'd be hiding it from my kids. Overall I give Super Doople 2.89 out of 5 stars.
What an adorable book! Little Doople falls and cracks like Humpty Dumpty. But in this case, the scientist puts him back together again. Once fixed, he is the same except for his size. He is huge! But he is still the same egg. He continues wanting to fly. The big difference is that he is now much more cautious in trying to do so. AND… He becomes a super hero. Get this for your little ones. They will love it and there are a couple of good lessons in there.
I received an ARC from the author and Elenora Press through NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion or rating of this book. I am voluntarily submitting this book and am under no obligation to do so.
The book is geared towards small children with a take on Humpty Dumpty. I liked the character and thought the illustrations were very colorful. As we follow Little Doople we learn he has a dream that someday he can fly. Of course Little Doople can’t fly but that doesn’t stop him.
It is a good lesson on following directions and listening to those who love and want to protect you. The book does a good job of showing the consequences of not listening. It is an easy to read book and will entertain children.
I received a copy of this book futon Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
A unique take on the tale of Humpty Dumpty…meet Little Doople who dreams of flying. After a flying attempt goes wrong, Little Doople is surprised with the outcome.
This one was ok. I don’t see myself reading this a lot to my kid because doople was a weird word I didn’t like saying and my kid didn’t think it was funny. I do like the idea of a book that builds on Humpty Dumpty though and it might work for other kids!
Hmmm… The typical story for the very young about someone getting up from failure and trying again does not tend to have them mistakenly transformed into a superhero so that they succeed, but that is what passes on these very briskly-read pages. Does that not make the counter-argument for it, that success at the second time isn't to be expected any more than the first, without a miracle? Either way, this could be an entry into a decent line of young reads – the Doople characters coming across as half Humpty Dumpty, half a Weeble. And whatever imbalance you may feel the story has, it is over very quickly, and still has the 'dream big' moral throughout. An eggshell over three and a half stars.
It's a cute read with lovely illustrations and a message to never give up on your dreams, even if you face many obstacles along the way, just like Doople.
This story about egg people was a fun one to read with my toddler daughter. She loves super heroes right now so the Super egg really appealed to her! The illustrations are so fun and colorful and kept her interested throughout the book.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for this ARC.
We can note two sides when we read this book: either it will give an impression that when we really want something we do it regardless of the warnings everyone give and get hurt but somehow we develop superpowers and this can be really negative. Like how it happened with a popular TV show. Kids went up to building tops and jumped down hoping to become the superhero. Because they really wanted to become like him.
And another side of reading this book would be to dream and help explain to the kids that it is not a realistic story but enjoy the story as it is and warn the kids not to try anything themselves to become a superhero.
The illustrations are good.
Well, let the one who tells the story decide if it is appropriate for the audience they are getting the book for.
Thank you, Eleonora Press, for the advance reading copy.
A fun story, sort of a Humpty Dumpty turned super hero with special powers. The book is about dreaming and trying and failing and trying again and succeeding. So, if at first, well, I think you know the story. A good, appropriate, upbeat message for the young ones.
Very cute story about not giving up on your dreams, and the importance of listening to those with more experience.
Super Doople by K.A. Cummins is a sweet picture book about following your dreams despite impossible odds.
We follow Little Droople, an egg who desperately wants to fly. Alas, he’s an egg, and one day his quest goes terribly wrong. He is helped by a scientist whose cure takes an unexpected but fantastic turn.
I really liked the illustrations and moral of this sweet story. I was really rooting for Little Droople but the ending caught me off guard and seemed a bit forced. It took an abrupt turn into a superhero story when what I really would have loved to see was a story about the value of community or science or just getting up, readjusting your expectations and trying again.
For me, this story was a great idea with an ending that derailed the message.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.
Super Droople releases on May 4, 2023.
