Halloween, the Cape May Haunted House Tour, pranks, a pet psychic, rival paranormal researchers, a ghost hunting tv crew, Gia' s mama and murder have Poppy McAllister ready to grab Gia, a gluten free muffin and hide until this night is over!
The latest addition to the series didn't disappointment and kept me guessing and laughing! I don't want to give anything away but I promise you'll love the book from the first sentence until the last!
I received an ARC from NetGalley and the opinions expressed in this review are my own
Welcome to the frequently chaotic world of Poppy McAllister and the wacky guests at her B&B. It's always a fun ride when you're with Poppy, full of laugh-out-loud scenes and characters who are, well, characters. Even boyfriend Gia, full name Giampaola, comes with a family that largely dislikes Poppy, especially his hot-headed mother. Even her own head cook/chef calls her names. And we haven't even gotten to this episode's guest who wears a metal colander on his head or the ghost hunters who seem to be everywhere, including outside Poppy's door when she's trying to sleep.
This is such a fun series. Libby Klein is a master at creating laugh-out-loud scenes and nutsy characters you'll like, even while rolling your eyes at their antics. Toss Halloween into the mix and you've got the scene for some wild antics and adventures. And, oh, a murder. Who killed one of Poppy's B&B guests? Quite frankly, I was half beginning to think we had a Christie Orient Express situation going because all the suspects seemed to have jolly good reason to have offed the philandering victim. Figaro the cat seemed to know more than Poppy, to be honest, when it came to solving that crime. BTW, Figaro is the name of the author's own cat.
As for the paranormal crew, which somehow seems an awkward adjective to describe them, will they discover Poppy's B&B isn't just a murder magnet ... or is that Poppy ... and discover a real ghost. Er, right. Another weird adjective choice. Is there such a thing as real and unreal ghosts? What secrets does the B&B hide? Will Figaro ever stop secreting objects he's "found"? And, who is vandalizing Poppy's Halloween decorations, most of which just seem to appear magically. Ghosts at work? And, whoa, what's behind the absolutely hilarious tale of Kenny's youthful misadventures?
What...oh, never mind. There is so much going on in this book, much of it humorous but with more than a touch of romance, that teasers just don't do it credit. If you want to read a fun mystery with just the right mix of mystery, romance, wacky characters, and humor, this one's for you. Thank you #NetGalley and KensingtonBooks - #KensingtonCozies for giving me just the right dose of humor and mystery to make my day. Speaking of teasers, oh, that ending....
Poppy McAllister, gluten-free baker (and baker of gluten-free goods) and B&B operator, finds herself roped into a ghost tour event. As you might guess the first night goes awry and more than a delicious dinner is laid out on Poppy's dinner table. Given that the deceased was the least popular man for miles around, finding out who salted his pork will take more than a little investigation.
This book has a little of everything. A fun group of senior sidekicks, a B&B, a crazy cat, guests who are out of the ordinary, a local ghost tour, an angry chef, a despised victim with an almost unlimited number of potential killers, and a little romance. And, oh, the ending! You'll be guessing until the very end (unless you figure out who the killer is and believe me, you'd be wrong!)
I read this series out of order, reading the first book, then the 6th, then the 2nd, followed by the 7th and now the 8th. Though it might have been a bit easier to read them in order, I don't think I missed anything (other than books 3, 4, and 5) by reading them the way I did. There are definitely story arcs and character growth and development, but these are simple enough to follow without needing a lot of backstory. Poppy is a fantastic character. She's loyal and steady and she has the backs of her friends, who in turn have her back as well. She's also a bit snarky and sarcastic, which provides for lots of laughs along the way.
This is a series I was a bit intimidated by in the beginning because they're quite long, but you won't know it as you're reading them because they're so fast-paced and there's so much going on. If you enjoy a good culinary cozy this is a series you'll definitely want to add to your list.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.
Mischief Nights are Murder is another fun addition to the Poppy MCallister mystery series. Poppy is not happy that her B&B is part of the Halloween Haunted Dinners Tour. Her guests are all involved in the paranormal world and their is obviously some bad blood between some of them. When one of her guests is murdered in her dining room during dinner, Poppy cant help herself from getting involved. I love the main characters in this series. This book had many laugh out loud moments. especially involving the antics of Figaro the cat, and the pet psychic guest who claims he can read Figaro's mind. There is romance. humor. and many red herrings sprinkled throughout that kept me guessing until the end. Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an advance copy to read and review.
I received a free copy of, Mischief Nights are Murder, by Libby Klein from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This is a Poppy McAllister Cozy Mystery series book. Poppy owns a b&b in Cape May, New Jersey. It is Halloween time and anything can happen including a murder at Poppy's b&b. This town is quite odd especially Aunt Ginny, but a good read over all.
This was a quick and easy read with a lot surprises along the way..The characters are fun and well developed. Would recommend
Thank you to Libby Klein, NetGalley, and Kensington Books – Kensington Cozies for the arc of this book.
A highly entertaining addition to the Poppy McAllister Cozy Mystery series. Author Libby Klein is a master storyteller with an emphasis on comedic scenes and snarky thoughts and dialogue. That’s right up my alley! In Book #8, Poppy and Aunt Ginny host a pet psychic and a houseful of paranormal investigators. Against Poppy’s better judgement, they participate in the Haunted Homes Tour in Cape May, NJ, and the bed and breakfast becomes known as “the murder house”, although no one has ever been murdered there….yet.
My favorite story now, and the funniest one, too, in my opinion; I had many laugh-out-loud moments reading the book! Dr. Rodney, the pet psychic, is supposedly reading Figaro’s mind and, of course, Figaro is in everyone’s business! The “murder house” unfortunately earns its nickname. Poppy and Aunt Ginny are having staff problems. And, Gia and Poppy are keeping a secret from his demanding mother, Olivia, and the spaghetti sauce is going to hit the fan when she finds out! Also, someone is pranking the Halloween decor at the bed and breakfast’s front yard, and Ginny is on a prankster hunt!
Meanwhile, a murderer is on the loose and no matter how many times I tried to guess who the culprit was, I was wrong, and thus, surprised at the reveal. The author was oh, so clever at casting suspicion on numerous people involved in the victim’s life. This cozy mystery was SO great! It ends with a small cliffhanger….Aaargg! The frustration! LOL! I highly recommend this cozy mystery to readers who like a super mystery plot and to readers who like a lot of humor, also.
I honestly reviewed an unedited digital arc provided by NetGalley and Kensington Publishing. All opinions are my own.
MISCHIEF NIGHTS ARE MURDER is the eighth book in the Poppy McAllister Mystery series by Libby Klein. The author has proven once again why this series remains my all-time favorite and why I move each new release to the very top of my TBR pile the second it’s in my possession! Ms. Klein has a knack for zingy one-liners, zany characters, and a zeal for laugh-out-loud situations. Her humorous timing is spot-on from protagonist, Poppy‘s internal dialog to the antics of her Aunt Ginny and the biddies, and her portly Persian cat, Sir Figaro Newton. Truth be told, Figaro and his pet psychic stole every scene they inhabited. With multiple subplots running throughout, Ms. Klein deftly manages them all. Weaving in the ins and outs of running a B & B, to dealing with Halloween festivities and hosting haunted home tours and dinners, to paranormal investigators intent on featuring her on a TV show, to another murder, there’s never a dull moment.
When one of Poppy’s dinner guests ends up face down in a plate of tiramisu, her reputation as either a murder magnet or a serial killer—depending on who you ask—goes through the roof. Juggling her Aunt Ginny’s penchant for trouble and getting in the way of the police, Poppy knows she needs to set the record straight to clear her name and keep the B&B from losing business. Her investigation takes her on haunted house tours, to wrangling a horse-drawn Victorian hearse, to feuding university professors and staff. There are suspects and clues aplenty, but this is one series I just want to sit back and enjoy the wild ride!
Poppy is well known for her gluten-free food, that she serves at the B&B as well as at her boyfriend’s café. Whether or not you need to eat gluten-free, the delicious recipes at the back of the book deserve to be perused and sampled!
Loved reading this book and series. These books will keep you cracking up laughing I highly recommend her and her books
I have read all the books in this series and am always happy to see a new one come out. I love the characters in the series. I especially like Poppy and how snarky she is. I totally agree with the way she sees situations. I thought the side part about the mischief was hilarious. The action does get a bit repetitive at one point where it seems as if Poppy is doing the same thing over and over again with the suspects. The ending however is a surprise.
I am a big fan of Ms. Klein's Poppy McAllister series. I have read them all and eagerly anticipate every new release. Unfortunately, this one just wasn't as funny as some of the prior books. She sets the bar quite high for herself and this one missed the mark but only slightly.
Halloween is coming and Butterfly Wings, Poppy and Aunt Ginny's B&B is hosting a ghost tour dinner. Poppy has a more stringent process for screening guests as she has gotten too many kooks and crazies. Unfortunately, her process goes out the window when a pet psychic, a tabloid reporter and the TV crew of a paranormal investigation show move into her B&B. The reporter is determined to expose her as a fraudster selling her "ghost stories" for money OR a serial killer who cleverly outwits the police with the number of bodies she has stumbled across. The pet psychic offers colorful commentary as Poppy's Persian, Figaro's, therapist and the ghost hunting team thinks Poppy has an entity following her around her house.
On top of all this someone is playing pranks on the house and Aunt Ginny is determined to find out who it is and scare the pants off them. This part was my favorite of the book because anything involving Aunt Ginny is bound to be both trouble and hilarious. It did not disappoint.
I enjoyed the book and was thrilled to be given an ARC from Kensington and Netgalley for an honest review. Libby Klein has stated her next book will be set at Christmas time and I am extremely eager to find out what else is in store for this crew.
Mischief Night is a New Jersey thing, no one else gets it, but mischief and mayhem abounds this one night each year…and Cape May isn’t spared. Between a murder at the first Haunted Dinner at the Butterfly Inn and someone leaving Halloween decor in front of the Inn, both Poppy and Aunt Ginny have some sleuthing to do.
This series always has a lot of fun with aunt Ginny and her sassiness opposed to Poppy’s even natured goof humor. I love the locale for this series as I am a Jersey girl and can never get enough time down the shore. Each entry has a solid mystery full of red herrings in clues that will keep you changing your mind as to whodunit until close to the end. Add in Figaro and the biddies, and you have a cast of characters that will have you laughing out loud at times and looking forward to becoming a biddy of yourself one day.
Oh my, #MischiefNightsAreMurder #NetGalley is a fantastic Halloween theme cozy mystery.
Poppy is on the Haunted House Tour thanks to a previous guest who believes the B & B is haunted. Her current guests are all part of the paranormal world, and some are bitter enemies.
Between the bickering guests, and Aunt Ginny's shenanigans, Poppy is at her wits end. Toss in her frenemy Joanne, add a dash of mean boyfriend's mom, and the mischievous pranks happening at the b and b, and you have all the ingredients to a great book.
I just had to keep reading, I didn't want to put it down, and the ending? Author Libby Klein really knows how to unleash the perfect cliffhanger.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book.

Here we go again with another fun stressbuster of a fun cozy! The town calls the place the murder house because Poppy keeps finding bodies. This time it's spooky season and there are home tours and more. The guests are all into paranormal but are argumentative with each other. The laughs never stop! The characters are fun and quirky, the goings on border on farcical, the sleuthing was good, and the food mouthwatering! Fantastic recipes at the end! Not to be missed!
I requested and received a free temporary e-book copy from Kensington Books via NetGalley. Thank you.
This was my first time reading Libby Klein and I loved this! I loved the cozy vibes, the characters, the banter, and the mystery! This was a definite page turner! I can't wait to read this again when it's autumn!
Oh I loved this book! Poppy and Libby Klein have never let me down. Fast paced action with a multitude wonderful characters. Not one character gets lost in the action. They are all fully formed and wonderful. I actually let out a little yell of frustration when the book ended. More more more please! Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced copy.
I enjoyed this book. I liked the characters although there are so many I got a bit confused about who was who. Pretty much everyone is a suspect but in the end the killer is someone who isn’t a suspect. It is a surprise. The food sounds great. The end is a bit of a cliffhanger. #MischiefNightsAreMurder #NetGalley
