Thanks NetGalley for the ARC!
This story was so messy and I was here for it. I haven't seen the source material that it's inspired by but I will for sure add it to my watchlist. Ari and Josh were both such flawed characters that found a friendship and relationship that worked for them. I found myself frustrated at times with both characters but that also made the story feel so relatable.
I'm glad by the end that they both somewhat got their lives together. I still feel like Josh needed to tamper his ego more but hopefully working with Rhad will further whip his stubbornness into shape.
Finished You, Again the other night. (Thank you @randomhouse for the early copy!) Overall I really enjoyed the story- I read it in one sitting. The book follows Ari and Josh through years of their lives. There are chance meetings and awkward run ins. They hate each other initially and then different life events/hardships eventually cause them to bond unexpectedly and form a really close friendship. This (obviously turns into more!) They both show a ton of character growth and in unusual way we get to follow them through not just months or a year but YEARS while this develops. It was funny and messy and I felt very connected to these characters. Will be recommending this to friends 🙂
This is a fun, modern take on When Harry Met Sally that also asks the timeless question - can men and women be just friends? Kate Goldbeck really brought Ari & Josh to life, as well as all the supporting characters. I loved all the NYC locations and the fact that the author included the addresses at the end of the book.
When Harry Met Sally is my favourite movie of all time, but I think the comparisons to it raised my expectations for this book too high. While in the movie a series of meetings takes only 15 minutes, it was nearly 100 pages into the book before we reached the present day where the story could truly begin. I didn't connect emotionally with either character the way I did with Sally, or even the more complicated Harry. I think this is a friends to lovers romance that is set in NYC, but for me the Nora Ephron comparisons end there.
4.5/5 ⭐️
I was fully intrigued by this book when I found out it was When Harry Met Sally inspired. And wow it did not disappoint.
I loved catching on to the small references.
And most importantly I fell in love with the book. Goldbeck managed to write amazing witty banter, messy people that made me feel, and lots of angst. God I loved it!
Ari had me all over the place, but she was so real and human. I think I loved seeing her growth the most. She went from being in very not so good place from her divorce and her career, being afraid to commit, to finally just letting her friends in, letting josh in, opening herself up to a relationship and trusting again.
I’m so excited for what comes next from Kate Goldbeck.
This was enjoyable! There were a few too many NYC references for my taste, but as someone who doesn't hold a fondness for the city, and has never lived there, I think they were like insides jokes I wasn't a part of. The romance was refreshing and life-like and the characters, flawed they may be, were easy to empathize with.
I'm ashamed to say that I don't think this lives up to the hype. The dude's grumpiness gets old fast and her comedy aspirations give me the cringe. It took me three valiant attempts to get to the 50% mark where I dnf'd.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
I have to admit I am somewhat of a cynic when it comes to romcoms. However I fell in love with this book. I realize love stories that explore characters in many eras of their life and the changes they make when growing older, especially when it comes with "the one that got away". Great story somewhat reminiscent of "When Harry Met Sally" as well as "One Day". I could not put this book down and didnt want it to end. Great witty and smart book overall.
This book was too emotional for me, the second portion was atrocious. It seemed there was alot of comparison to When Harry Met Sally but I didn't grasp the connection, nor did I feel a connection to either character.
Thank you to Dial Press, Random House and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
once upon a time I read a book called josh and hazel's guide to not dating and I live my life trying to find books that remind me of it.
this reminded me of it. it wasn't perfect - the lack of communication in this book made me crazy but josh and ari's better moments made me so happy that it heavily outweighed what I wasn't liking. I loved josh and ari was so much fun but damn these two needed therapy many many months ago.
the end of this just felt like such a grand gesture, rom-com moment that I just can't stop thinking about. it was so perfect and they were so cute and josh is justtttt <3<3<3<3<3 yes this is my professional review of him LOL.
overall, I adored this. so much. ari needed some serious guidance or a good shake but other than that I loved it.
What can I say about You, Again that hasn’t already been said? Told in alternating perspectives across 400+ pages without ever once stagnating, Kate Goldbeck’s debut has more than earned the hype. A hot, likable novel about two hot, borderline unlikable people, and maybe my easiest 5* of the year.
Thank you to The Dial Press and NetGalley for providing this e-arc.
Although billed as a “when Harry met Sally” romance. The book was only a satisfactory romance. From a character standpoint, I could not relate to either character. Ari is a struggling comedian with commitment issues. Josh is an uptight chef who is a bit of a control freak looking for happily ever after. The book is based on their individual failures in life — small successes mixed with significant failures. While the book comes together in the end, it take in hurt feelings, a long time and broken hearts. Although romantic at times, it didn’t give me that heartwarming feeling I get when the characters portray their glee over finding each other. I want to thank NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this book in return fo an honest review.
For some reason, this book took me a really long time to read. I think I felt a disconnect with the characters and it took a while to be invested in them. Still a great story.
Lots of great buzz for this book and I gladly purchased for our fiction collection. Reading it for myself was underwhelming though I appreciated the realistic portrayals of all kinds of love.
This was really good and def gave me when Harry met sally vibes. I loved it. It was so good. I can’t wait to read more by this author.
I loved everything about this even the parts I didn’t like. Perfect!
Ari and Josh have many unpleasant run in’s over the years. Until a run in where they are both at low points and a friendship develops. Both characters are deeply flawed and incredibly real and human.
Woah, I can't believe it took me so long to read this one! The book of the fall as far as I'm concerned. I loved the gender-reversed WHEN HARRY MET SALLY.
A good enemies to lovers book, great chemistry and banter between Ari and Josh. Love the dual point of view and many laugh out loud moments
You, Again is a second (or third, or fourth) chance romance from author Kate Goldbeck.
Overall I enjoyed this book. Ari and Josh are opposites, but not really, and they are each engaging characters on their own. It was interesting to see their failures and successes over the years, but all the time skips did make the book seem a bit choppy.
But still, I enjoyed this romance!
I was kicking my feet up in the air, hiding my face in my hands, the entire time I read this. Fantastic chemistry, believable “enemies to lovers”. No notes!! I loved it!
