Well written syfy full of secrets, twists, turns, action and adventure! I feel like the character building/backstories were good!
Last few chapters of the book really sealed the deal on wanting to read the next in series! The action picked up with a huge plot twist! Can’t wait to see where the story goes!
I am giving this book 3 stars mainly because I have conflicting feelings about it, but also because the ending of the book really sucked me in.
The majority of the book felt…kind of discombobulated. It felt like there were lots of things being alluded to that we weren’t privy to…and for most of the book, we remained not privy to that information. Then came the end of the book, and it was like information overload until it just stopped - and you get to wait for book 2.
I’m not a huge fan of any of the main characters. The romance square between Viola and Ryler and Anna and Theis was a bit much. It felt like the author tried really hard to throw some romance into the book, but it just didn’t work. I mean, Anna kisses Theis because all of a sudden she has this passion for him…but then decides mid-kiss she doesn’t want him, she wants Ryler. Ryler, in turn, kisses Viola, but then decides he’s in love with Anna. Did I mention he decides this after kissing Viola and after his mom is taken in for questioning? Oh, and then Ryler decides he wants to hit Theis because he kissed Anna. Just wholly unbelievable.
Ryler is also a very overly emotional person to the point that his emotional outbursts feel disingenuous. I get that he’s been through some pretty terrible things, but he needs to lean how to control his outbursts. I forgot to mention that after Ryler and Anna discover the nightshade and he has a pretty bad reaction, they end up making out for the first time immediately after…what?
The ending of the book saved this review. I’m going to read the second book and hopefully will be provided with more answers and less…forced romance and overdone emotional outbursts.
Thank you to NetGalley and Berkeley Publishing Group for giving me the chance to read this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I read Deep in a day if that gives any indication to how much I enjoyed this read.
The story follows Ryler and Anna mostly with chapter being in the POV of one of the two. Red, their mutual friend also makes plenty of appearances and was one of my favorite characters.
We meet Ryler first who is reeling after the death of his grandmother, the president of their colony Deep Blue. For all intents and purposes the official cause of death is old age but Ryler isn't convinced after he catches a glimpse of something that shouldn't be possible.
Teaming up with Anna the two race against time to discover just what the higher ups of the colony are hiding with the help of Red and Anna's younger brother, Pulli.
What they discover will change everything they've ever come to know. Their very world may not be the safe haven they once believed it to be.

Unfortunately, this was a DNF for me. It was a mixture of the writing style and my dislike for the story - I had too many thoughts to The 100 that I couldn't separate the similarities. Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to give it a go.
I received online access to this book through NetGalley in return for an honest review.
I thought this story had some great potential. It’s a dystopian sci fi YA, not my typical genre, even so, I enjoyed it enough.
My biggest issue? The editing. There are a lot of misspellings and either missing words or words in incorrect order. Hopefully this is rectified before they send this out for purchasing.
While there was enough to the story to keep my wanting to know happens, there needs to be better world building. In this genre, you have to paint the realities of life and existence of the characters for the reader to understand the story. The "science" didn't seem to jibe for me. Again, dystopian and sci-fi has to build a believable reality.
The characters are likable enough for me to want the best for them, but they needed to be fleshed out some more. Their personalities were 2 dimensional and needed more background. We weren't ever told their ages, some details and context led me to believe they are in their early 20s. Their interactions were too "surface". For people who have lived together in such a limited existence their whole lives, they should be intertwined, involved, and comfortable with each other. And if they are in their 20s, they behaved much younger in their interactions. The romantic aspect also needs to be meatier. It fell flat and needed more depth.
The bones of the story has potential, but in the end, the story just didn't work for me. This should have been a 1-2 day read and it took me a couple weeks to finish it, which is not a good sign. I'm not likely to read any sequels.
Thank you to #Netgalley for the chance to read this ARC. #Deep

I loved this book, what a ride. Plot twist after plot twist spiced with a lot of mystery! A great sci-fi dystopian YA adventure. Some editing problems got in the way, but it didn't affect my enjoyment.

The vibe of this book is The 100 under the sea and I thought that it had some great potential just based on that.
It’s a dystopian sci fi, so I’m not expecting the laws of their world to be the same as ours, however it does need to do a better job convincing me of how the world works. Several times I thought to myself “that makes no sense”. The science, however it might have suffered from our world (or not) didn’t always seem sound to me.
In and of themselves the characters are likable enough, but there are a few aspects of them that make them not feet real or make them not very believable. Their interactions and relationships would benefit from some extra work from the author and editors side. I don’t believe we’re ever told exactly how old any of the characters are, and so we’re left to guess based on some loose details and how they act. I believe the main characters to be 20 something years old, but it is my experience that they act younger than that both in the way they talk and in the way they interact (also when it comes to romance). I felt like the romantic aspect of the book fell flat and didn’t have a lot of depth to it.
The dialogue was often not very believable and didn’t seem organic/natural. With a few exceptions of fun and witty banter or the like.
The bones of the story has a good deal of potential, but in the way it was executed here I wasn’t really surprised by any plot points, the twists were ineffective. I started speed reading/skipping halfway through the book, which was not a good sign and I considered not finishing the book.
I know for a fact that I won’t be reading any sequels.
When the Earth becomes uninhabitable, humanity retreats to the depths of the oceans to survive. After generations of living below the surface, discoveries will be made, and many persons will begin to question the actions of those around them. But the truth is so much more complicated than they could have ever imagined.
Wow, I did not see that coming! I'd already been anticipating the twist, had this idea of what was coming, but I failed to predict the truth, and it's dozy.
This was an extremely fun YA sci-fi adventure. Thousands of people living in an underwater colony for generations, and being able to sustain themselves was a super interesting topic. This book was fast paced and well written, despite some editing mistakes.
