I wasn't a huge fan of this book, though it was a quick and easy read. A group of old friends from college receive a mysterious invitation to go to a cabin in the woods during a snowstorm. Of course, there is no reception and they quickly begin to realize they are trapped at the cabin and are targets of a murderer who know their "dark secret." About 50% of the book consisted of the characters pointing fingers at each other and making snide remarks. Unfortunately, I wasn't surprised to find out who the murderer was and the ending was pretty rushed.
Secrets at Meadow Lake by Wendy Owens was a gripping thriller.
The pacing was perfect and kept me enthralled and intrigued till the very end.
This book hooked me from the very beginning and never let me go.
Owens writing style is very engaging and near unputdownable.
It was gripping, suspenseful, twisty, intriguing, and kept me engaged the entire book.

Thank You NetGalley and Victory Editing for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!——————————
I’m currently at 67% and the anticipation is killing me!
It’s 1:51 am and I woke up just so I could squeeze more chapters in.
Interesting premise but I'm afraid I didn't care for the writing style.
I received this arc for free on netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you Wendy Owens and Victory Editing #NetGalley Co-Op for the advanced ebook of Secrets at Meadow Lake! A common theme amongst thrillers right now seems to be friendly, or dare I say, unfriendly reunions. This reunion takes place at a cabin of this group of friends past. Along the way you find out what happened to the friend group and briefly how they got through their shared troubled time. However, it gets a little quieter along the way with one being silenced and then another and then another and then…(“AND NO AND THEN” iykyk).
It is a slightly slow burning thrill-mystery read and kept me thinking of different scenarios along the way! Ultimately, my general idea was correct with a few different twists to throw me off. I give this book an even 4 stars only because I had it figured out prior to my 50% reading mark.
I would rec this one if you like shorter reads you can get done in one sitting or if you have a high reading goal for the year!
I would be most definitely interested in working with the author on her future reads whether it be reading/reviewing more ARCs or hosting giveaways to my growing following - I just recently hit the 300 milestone mark on my Bookstagram (@readswithwats) and have over 1,000 on my main (@holmesandwats).
Thank you again so much for this honor and privilege! Within a three month period I had lost my job, unexpectedly dumped by my bf, and found out my dog has a pretty serious cancer diagnosis where surgery could cause him more pain than good. Just starting out my journey or getting my reading groove back has really saved my life and being seen for an advanced copy like this means everything! Thank you again and hope I get the opportunity to work with you again soon! Take care and have a most fabulous day!!
Heart pounding thriller that left me on the edge of my seat. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Definitely one of the best books this year.
Although I tend to love a closed room mystery set in a winter landscape, I thought this story missed the mark a bit. The book got off to a strong start and I was hooked at first but unfortunately, the characters insisted so often and so stridently that the did not deserve forgiveness, that I had to agree. The story had some holes and missteps but overall was not a bad book. A few tweaks in editing would probably make this a slam dunk.
Riley and her group of college friends get an invitation to spend a weekend at Meadow Lake. The gathering falls on the anniversary of a death they caused years before.
One by one, they are killed by an unknown person. Could it be one of them causing the deaths?
This book was suspenseful, and kept me reading far into the night.
I did, however, guess who the killer was, early on in the book. It was quite obvious.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Great from the first page, full of mystery and kept you guessing until the very end, a gret book from a great author
I wanted to love this book but it was not for me sadly! The premise was interesting but there was so much bickering and fighting that I felt like there was no thriller happening! The ending and twist at the end helped give it 3 stars instead of two. Not a bad book but not my favorite.
Wow! What a dark and twisted ride! Everything begins just as the blurb tells us. But once all the characters are in place things begin to happen that no one saw coming.
This is a tension filled read as every few turns of the pages reveals something new. The characters are all called into question and I was never certain where the danger was coming from. I was immediately pulled into the dark, dreary atmosphere the author created. Add the evil that is occurring within the group and I found myself anxious throughout the story, never certain what was going to happen next or where it was coming from.
Wendy is such an amazing thriller writer she never disappoints. I couldn’t put this down until I was finished beginning to end. It definitely had me guessing who what when where and why? A definite must read of hers!
This is a short book with a huge impact. I love books where people get trapped somewhere with a bunch of jerks they have avoided since high school or college.
I barely remember high school or college and even I don't want to be trapped with people from back then.
I love the way the story of what these people did in college unfolds.
The fun thing about these books is the people from college have all accomplished something, None of my colleagues ever did. We are all trying to survive and are basically scraping by,
Anyway this was wonderful!
This is a very entertaining novel that I devoured in a few hours. In the tradition of “And then there were none,” a group of friends is invited to a secluded cabin just before a snowstorm. There is no cellphone signal and from the beginning it’s clear that they’re hiding a dark secret. As a longtime reader of these type of mysteries, I figured out all the clues and wasn’t as surprised as I would have liked, but I still enjoyed the book. The characters were also better written than usual for these type of novels, and they had distinctive traits. I wasn’t sure how the story was going to end and, despite feeling a little rushed and requiring a considerable suspension of disbelief, I liked it.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thank you, #NetGalley/#Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op!
"Secrets at Meadow Lake" by Wendy Owens is an exciting psychological thriller that follows a group of seven people who are invited to spend a weekend at a cabin on Meadow Lake. The cover and blurb grabbed my attention (The cover is beautiful!), and from the moment I started reading, I was sucked into the story.
It all begins with Riley and her former college friends receiving a mysterious invitation. Actually, it started ten years ago when a traumatic event derailed their lives, and now the past came back to haunt them. Someone is determined to unearth the past and expose their secret, and his motives are unclear. The invitation is for the exact anniversary of that event, and they all accept, fearing the consequences if they don't.
Old tensions, grievances, and frictions rise to the surface as they try to figure out who's against whom. The plot thickens as one death follows another, and they don't know whom to trust. To make matters worse, a snowstorm traps them in the cabin, there is no cell connection, and they have no means of escape. They have to recalculate their route and figure out who's responsible for their dire situation to stay alive.
I love locked-room mystery and enjoyed this tale. The story is told in the first person and present tense by Riley, and the pace is fast and furious. Wendy Owens' writing is taut and suspenseful, and she expertly builds the tension and the desolate atmosphere (just like the weather) throughout the book. This style of writing allows you to feel part of the story, witnessing what takes place together with the protagonists as the story unfolds. The interjection of the characters' flashbacks into the present scenes enriches the plot. As the story progress, the reader is left wondering who will make it out alive.
The only issue I had with the book was with some of the characters' interactions. There was too much bickering and shouting going on - and overuse of words such as "growl, boom, roar, bark, snarl" - which was tiring at times. Nonetheless, it didn't impact my enjoyment of the story. I recommend this emotionally-charged book to anyone who enjoys locked-room mysteries and looks for a good tale.
* Thank you NetGalley and (publisher) for the opportunity to read this arc. All opinions are my own. I posted my review on my blog (Gali's Books Blog) and Goodreads. It will be posted on Amazon on April 12th.
The Secrets at Meadow Lake are dark and twisted. When former college friends meet at the lake they pretend that the event that changed everyone's lives ten years ago doesn't exist.
A snowstorm sets in and things grow dim. The storm gets worse and worse and murders begin and then continue.
A classic locked room mystery, it is a wild ride.
This story blew me away! If you love a fast-paced psychological thriller with a killer twist you need to read Secrets at Meadow Lake. Wendy Owens has outdone herself! Bravo!
Very fun read. Kept me guessing all the way up until the end.
I love a story like this one where there is some secret from the past, haunting these characters.
Great book! This book had a bit of everything! It had suspense, intrigue, murder, mystery, A great who done it, and a few crazy twists and turns! The storyline was very interesting and kept me glued to my Kindle! I definitely recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
Great little mystery about college friends who are reunited by a mysterious person. All received an invite to Meadow Lake but they were not sure why and were all highly suspicious of each other. They group hasn't aged well, and some of their sniping is a bit exhausting but the mystery itself and why it happened is interesting. If you like childhood secrets, Agatha Christie like scenarios, then you will enjoy #SecretsAtMeadowLake #WendyOwens
