Imagine waking up one day and discovering you have a superpower and getting to help your very favorite superhero fight crime. Now imagine waking up the next day, excited to use your powers again, only to find that you have a completely different superpower than you did the day before. With his mom gone missing from a work trip and left with babysitter/robot pal AI in charge, Switch must learn to navigate his newโand constantly changingโsuperpowers as well as figure out who are the good guys and who are the bad ones.
Such a fun twist on the traditional superhero storyโand an amazing cliffhanger at the end, too! This illustrated chapter book will be a hit with superhero fans and younger middle grade readers looking for adventure and laughs.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an eARC of the book to read and review.

Super silly and stupendously swell! What can go wrong with AI? How about when itโs your babysitter? They gave him a superpower! A different one every day! What imagination and I believe kids will really get into the action that ensues. Itโs an easy read with great illustrations that make it part chapter book, part graphic novel - a perfect combination!
YES to more middle grade fantasies like this illustrated novel about a kiddo who wakes up with a surprise superpower one day while his momโs away! Of course the first thing he wants to do is see if thereโs any way he can be his favorite superheroโs sidekick but between his robot caretaker being a stickler for the rules, and the fact that every day his superpower is something different, he learns itโs all a little more complicated than he anticipated!
I really felt for Switcheroo as what starts out as an awesome adventure (getting superpowers??!! What??) becomes an opportunity to better understand himself, as he learns how helpful it is to take a beat and assess his capacity since his powers are ever changing, and how much gray there is between right and wrong as he learns more about the people most impacted by a binary framework for good and bad. .
I appreciated Switcherooโs curiosity and willingness to course correct as he learned more about himself and the people around him. I thought the authors did a great job exploring big ideas while incorporating the magic and mayhem of having superpowers, meeting superheroes/supervillains alongside a cheeky robot caretaker reminding everyone of the rules! Often who we perceive as the hero or the villain depends on our perspective!
Iโm looking forward to discussing this with the young readers in my life and getting their perspectives. The ones Iโve mentioned this to are already excited to read it. Get this book for the youngsters (and young at heart) in your life!
My thanks to Random House, tbrbeyondtours.com and NetGalley for the DRC of โThe Stupendous Switcherooโ.
