I started to read slower at the end because I did not want it to end. I’ve loved these characters since the beginning and love the historical dystopia that these books create. Have to admit that I’m a little sad to not completely know how every character’s story ends, but I appreciate that gives us as readers the chance to write our own ending.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read this ARC!
The final chapter in the American Royals saga gives readers a lot to consider. What happens when our plans get derailed? To whom, or to what, is our loyalty owed? What happens when our head and our heart want very different things? Katharine McGee takes readers on a journey with the members of the Washington family as they fight their way through a year that changed everything. Queen Beatrice is in the hospital after a near-fatal accident that leaves the future of the crown hanging in the balance. Princess Samantha has gone completely off the radar, leaving Prince Jefferson to step in and rule in Beatrice's place. McGee has created a final installment that is reflective of what we know of history, the British monarchy, and the history that is playing out for us today - even without an American monarchy. Full of twists and turns, heartbreak, and ultimately, hope, readers will enjoy this story full of bright, vibrant young people who could, under a different set of circumstances, be America's royals.
I loved this series. It's has all you need:
-Romance
-Royals
-Sabotage/Betrayals
-Friendships
-Strong female leads
It's such a fun concept of America being a monarchy. The various regions and there dukedoms. I definitely recommend picking up this series.
I am so sad this is the last book!! We follow Beatrice who is recovering from the accident with memory loss. Sam, who left and went off the grid. Nina, who is trying to be her own person, and Daphne whos life long goal is finally coming true. But are all of these things really what they want?
I am so obsessed with this series! I was worried the last book would be cheesy (and it was to be honest), but I inhaled it the same way I read the other three books. I thought Beatrice's recovery (or smoothing over of it) seemed quick as did her relationship with Teddy (I just wanted more scenes with them). I also felt the redemption of Daphne, which I get, just didn't feel 100% correct to me. The characters sometimes felt out of character for themselves. Nevertheless I LOVE the series so much and so love recommending it too!
With the conclusion of book 3, we were left with Samantha on the run in Hawaii, Beatrice in a horrible car accident, and Jefferson in the role he never thought he would find himself. Quite the cliffhangers!
This final installment gives the conclusion to those events, with plenty of ups, downs, twists, and turns to go around for all of our characters - those we love and those we really wish would grow up and find another way to live. Ultimately, I felt that each character was well on their way to moving forward and being themselves by the time we reach the end of the tale. I especially enjoyed the Daphne/Nina saga, and was glad to see that reach the final conclusion it did.
I really enjoyed this series and “Reign” was a very solid wrap up to the “American Royals” series. We are pulled back into the world of monarchy, backstabbing, unrequited love and the desire to do what is best, not just for the country, but for themselves. I also think this book did a good job reminding the reader of what happened in the last books without it being a complete recap. I appreciate the various relationships and how people change and grow throughout the series. I really enjoyed how Bee and Sam both grew throughout the series. They finally came into their own in this last book even though their paths ended up being wildly different. Though I despised Daphne throughout most of the series, her character was fully developed and you may even sympathize with her by the end of this novel. I really enjoyed the endings for all the characters and loved seeing where they ended up. I would definitely like the author to revisit these characters down the road. I think that this would make a great TV series and hope that somebody decides to adapt it. Thanks to Katherine McGee, Netgalley and Random House for an e-arc in exchange for my thoughts. I look forward to reading what Katherine writes next!
I love this entire series. My students really do, too. The characters stay true to who they are but grow in great ways. The idea of America being a monarchy is done so well and stays true to what is should be. I
#netgalleyarc I LOVED this. This was the perfect ending for this series. This is one of the few series that I read and I’m all “please keep it going forever” but in reality if it went on forever it would start to be boring snd I’d just read them all out of obligation. I thought this book wrapped everything nicely and I wasn’t left feeling unsatisfied or wondering what if. A great summer read!
The amazing thing about this series is that I never have any idea of what is going to happen next. This book completes the character arcs that have been developing over the series, and I thought every character got the perfect ending for them.
What a great journey to read all 4 books in the American Royal series! All 4 books were engaging, fun beach/travel reads :D I really liked Daphne and Ethan’s story, btw!
Notable lines:
“That was the thing about listening to the media. If they kept telling you, over and over, that you weren’t good enough, classy enough, perfect enough, then eventually you started to believe it.”
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The end of the series is upon us. McGee tugs on our heartstrings once again in Reign. Although, this book is the weakest in the series. It is slow and plot lines get wrapped up in a mere sentence without development. Solid characters are abruptly behaving unlike themselves. You must suspend belief while reading just to see how it all ends. The focus of this book is just to wrap up the series and see who ends up with who.
his was such a bittersweet ending to a series that I have loved so much (bittersweet mostly because I could read another 4 books in this series!)!! After the third book, I was really interested to see what all would happen in this one, and as it turns out, Reign is the last installment. I had some specific plot points/character developments I was really hoping to see in the conclusion, and for the most part, I think the author did a wonderful job wrapping everything up while still having a good amount of plot and action. One thing I love about this book (and series) is all the different POVs- they make it so fun to read because you feel like you know all of the characters especially well!
As always, I especially enjoyed the chapters about Sam and Daphne perhaps because theirs are the most tumultuous. I had a fairly good idea of how McGee would wrap their stories, and I wasn’t too far off.
I absolutely adore this series and know that a reread is in my future! I would recommend this series to anyone who likes royalty-inspired books. I am certainly gonna miss these characters who I have grown to cherish!
Thank you NetGalley for my ARC!
I have really enjoyed this series and this was a solid last installment. Character development over the four novels was very satisfying, and I loved seeing some characters redeemed in ways that were perfect for their story arc. I also liked how the author incorporated real-life situations from the current world monarchies but put a uniquely American twist on them. I will say I’m not sure Queen Beatrice is the star of this novel, though! She has stiff competition from Samantha and Daphne!
As the fourth and final book in the series (according to the author), I expected this to tie up all of the loose ends, and while this was an enjoyable read, it didn’t feel as conclusive as I would have liked.
Queen Beatrice starts out in a coma and the country looses confidence in her, Prince Jefferson acts as Regent while planning his wedding to Daphne, and Samantha is AWOL (hiding out in Hawaii) and has lost her royal claim. Fast forward a bit…Beatrice comes out of her coma and has amnesia, Jefferson finds out that Daphne isn’t pregnant (which is why the wedding was happening in the first place), Samantha comes home but isn’t allowed at the castle with the family. Twists and turns, as well as the ever present drama of being in the spotlight, are never far away from the American Royal family.
Amazing! I’m absolutely in awe of writers who can make a series come to such a wonderful conclusion. Just when I thought I had Daphne figured out, she did in about face; just when I thought I had Beatrice l figured out, she also surprised me. Samantha‘s character seems spot on, especially in relationship to the other books. I would have liked to see more from Nina, but the other three women were very strong.
The only downside would be not knowing as much about Prince Jefferson, and how he ended.
At the end of the school year when about 1000 other things are going on, this was the perfect escape that I needed.
I’ve recommended this series to so many readers - students and adults - thank you Katharine McGee for making my job as a librarian easier.
For readers who have been wanting their summer read, for followers of the series, who like a nice little package tied together, for those just encountering the series. For the first time this book has it all!
Special thanks to Random House Children’s for the advance reader copy and to Netgalley.
I was so overjoyed when the 4th book in the American Royals series was announced and am so pleased I finished reading it on Coronation Saturday! It was wonderful to be back with the Washingtons and I’m very sad to see the series come to an end!
This was a delightful ending to a fun series. I know that my students will love the drama, scheming, and romance that unfolds in these pages. This is definitely a series that I would buy for my classroom and recommend for purchase for our school library.
I love a good happy ending even if it took them a while to get their happily ever after. Teddy was as charming as ever but Sam's character growth was by far the best. I really wanted more resolution for Nina but I guess the lack of answers means I can imagine her with Jamie.
s much as I enjoyed all of McGee’s books, I struggled to finish this last one. I was so frustrated with Beatrice and her ‘condition’ and angry with the way that everyone treated Sam. In the end, I just felt like the story was moving slower than it needed to. I feel like it could have ended in less than 100 pages and accomplished tfw sane thing. So on that note, I give it 3/5 stars
