A wonderful conclusion to a favorite series. The only thing I wish is that there are spin offs to conclude a few characters arcs or delve into their character a little more.
This was a great wrap up to a great series! I didn’t know how Katharine McGee was possibly going to finish the series with this book after how we left the characters at the end of Rivals. I really loved how Daphne was redeemed for me in this book. She’s still the same complex character that she is in the other books, but she has finally reached her full potential in a way I loved more than how she’s acted in the other books. I am so happy with how the Washington ended up. I wish for a little more of a wrap up for Nina, but I also like how there’s a lot of room for a return to this world.
In this installment, all the royals are deep in the muddy waters of tremulous emotions, tabloids, and trepidations. As the chapters unfold, the reader gets to move forward in understanding each royal as new details are revealed and consequences of those choices come to light. In an attempt not to give spoilers, my heart finished this read in a happy place. There were times I very much doubted I would feel that way but I’m grateful for all the feels and savoring every moment of this read.
I received the copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I squealed with delight when I got word about this digital ARC and then devoured this book. Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me to read it.
Overall, this was a satisfying end to the series, as this is the 4th and final book. There were a few points where I felt like it may have dragged on, but honestly, that may have just been the character’s chapter I was in. The girls are all back and I found myself laughing and (at times) crying. I was very pleased with the character growth in this book too! If you’ve read the other books, you will be happy with how things wrap up and the ties to real life royalty too.
This book was an excellent ending to a series that I have really enjoyed! It kept the same tension as the others book and had an incredibly satisfying ending. I hate that the series is over, but I’m so glad it ended the way it did.
This is the conclusion to the American Royals series. All of the books have been entertaining reads to me. This was probably my least favorite, but that might just be because I was starting to get a bit sick of the series. However, after reading the others, I wanted to finish this one to see how things ended up for each of the siblings.
Thank you for this ARC! It was fun to be back in this alternate reality where USA is ruled by a monarchy. But ultimately this series dragged on too long. The 3rd and this 4th book could have been one. My biggest issue is how many details about the characters are taken from the real life British Royal Family. Honestly, it is quite lazy storytelling. I did want to see how the characters ended up but this was not a grea read.
Beatrice is in a coma, Jefferson is about to marry someone who he shouldn’t marry & become stand-in for his sister and Samantha has run away, going off the grid, and doesn’t know anything about Bee’s accident or that she’s in a coma. Can the Washington siblings overcome multiple obstacles and become who they WANT to be, not what the country and the world expects them to be? This was a solid wrap up to the American Royals series. We are pulled back into the world of monarchy, backstabbing, unrequited love and the desire to do what is best, not just for the country, but for themselves. I would definitely like the author to revisit these characters down the road. It’s oh so possible!
This series just keeps getting better and better and the tension and attraction just scorch and burn off the pages! These characters are not the little prim and proper characters of old, they are ambitious, they are imperfect, they have personalities and you may not always like them, but you can't look away from them. How I wish this series was real and that these characters were actual American Royalty!! This series is unputdownable and addictive and so much fun, I can't recommend it highly enough! Well done, Ms, McGee!!!!!
This is book 4 in the series.
The girls are back. Beatrice was in a car accident at the end of the last book and this one starts with Queen Beatrice in the hospital, unconscious. When she wakes she has lost the last year of her memory. Her younger sister, Sam had ran off to Hawaii with her boyfriend to escape the pressures of being the spare, but when she learns of her sister's accident she returns to find that congress has stripped her of being a princess and her twin brother is in charge until Beatrice wakes up. Meanwhile Daphne has convinced the only crown prince of America, Jefferson, that she is pregnant with his child and when the queen says they will get married, Daphne's all for the idea. Meanwhile Nina is being wooed by the prince of Canada while still telling Jefferson that she deserved better then to be kissed by him just before he proposed to Daphne.
These 4 girls are in for drama in this last book. I really liked the ending of this series. Very empowering book all around! It's hard not to give away anything with this one. As the final book in the series a lot is happening to wrap up the 4 girl's stories. I think the author did an excellent job. I'm sad it has to end, but the author managed the perfect ending to empower each girl just the right way. I do feel bummed for Jefferson though.
A big thank you to netgalley.com and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Reign feels like a wonderfully wrapped present to conclude the American Royals series. McGee does slip in a few plot twists, that I admittedly did not see coming, and continues to bring delight with the intertwined lives of Daphne, Beatrice, Sam, and Nina as they navigate their lives within and beside the Washington Royal Family. These books have been pure escapism for me, and I have enjoyed the fact that they center on the women of the group- as a fun commentary about our current society, and as a historian for the commentary about how history has usually been written. Overall, a well-done conclusion to a YA series and something I highly recommend you pick up if you enjoy frothy drama.
What a satisfying end! After the cliffhanging and shark-jumping of book 3, I was nervous for the final book in the American Royals series. Katherine McGee did not disappoint and the series has been redeemed. A must-read conclusion! Thank you to NetGalley for the digital ARC!
The scandalous lives of The Washington siblings and their various love interests and friends in this series that reimagines America as a Monarchy was a delightful and diverting read, as always! It seems open for a book 5!
3.5! Yes, this whole series is basically a CW show. One of the plot twists seemed like maybe it could be something super interesting and then just sort of fizzled out. Yes, some other plots are wrapped up a little too neatly. But it's enjoyable and a very easy vacation read.
Closing out this series is bittersweet. I started the first book as an 8th grader, and now I finish the book heading into my senior year. I love this series. Reign closes the series out so perfectly.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, this series! Book IV did not disappoint. Though being the last book, I am sad. Wishing to read more about the Washington family.
A very fitting end to this amazing YA series. My only request is: when will we get the prequel of Adelaide and King George?
It's a satisfying conclusion in the sense that everything is wrapped up fairly tidily, but suffers the same unnecessary bloating the rest of the series is weighed down by.
Reign (American Royals #4) by Katharine McGee is the fourth book in the series and I could tell from the start that this would be the end. The series is based on the premise of George Washington accepting the crown of America. The three Washington children, Beatrice, Samantha, and Jefferson, are struggling with their new roles (Queen, Spare, and Regent) as well as trying to figure out how to be royal and still have a normal relationship.
I really enjoyed this series and liked the ending. It answered all of the lingering questions and left me feeling content and satisfied. If you like keeping up with the British Royals, you will really enjoy McGee’s American Royals.
“History matters, but the future is far more important. And I promise you that I will be with you for the future, whatever comes.”
The REIGN of the American Royals series has finally concluded. I remember reading Book 1 at the start of the pandemic and being absolutely absorbed into this world where America had a monarchy. I loved spending time with the Washingtons and crew, so this conclusion to their story was bittersweet (the epilogue was perfect!).
Despite my nostalgia for the series, REIGN ranks low on my list. Beatrice, Samantha, Nina, and Daphne seem to repeat old storylines - Beatrice has to learn to be queen and fall in love with Teddy again, Nina/Daphne/Jeff/Ethan go round in a love triangle again (Samantha’s story feels different though so she gets a pass). I just grew tired of the drama. Fans who have made it this far in the series will satisfied, but I wish this series could’ve evolved/matured into “new adult” territory instead of a secret email backmailer plot line.
Although REIGN didn’t live up to my expectations, I will continue to revisit this series in the future because this world is very fun. I hope Netflix or the CW buys the adaptation rights because this series just screams addictive teen TV drama like Outer Banks and Riverdale.
