Another great read by this author. I love the continuation of the Washington family saga and the story's conclusion. Lots of intrigue, romance, duty, and decisions are made that affect the lives of the each of the Washington family members. Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
⭐️⭐️⭐ Reign (American Royals #4) by Katharine McGee
So based on how this book ended, this series is over. I enjoyed reading about Bea, Sam, Jeff, Daphne, and Nina throughout these four books. But I must say that I’m glad it’s over.
This fourth book wrapped up the drama and excitement that is the Washington family, the royal family of the United States. Without spoiling anything, everything is wrapped up nicely in the end and HEA’s for everyone -- except one person.
This book was filled with a bit of mystery, a bit of discovery, a bit of growing up, and a bit of love. (I found myself rooting for a couple of unlikely pairs.)
Overall this was a decent ending to a series. Well-done and perfect for young adult (and adult) romance readers, especially those who like The Selection Series.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this title for review.
A good conclusion to this story. I loved the first half of this one but then it got kinda boring for me in the end. Still love the concept of this one though.
I cannot get enough of this series!! The idea of royalty in America is fascinating and I love that we get a small view of what it could look like, I’m so sad this series is ending but what a way to go out.
If you are a fan of Princess Diaries 2, this book is for you.
I am so glad we got to go back to the land of American Royals for more than a duology. I think some characters deserved a happier ending, but I'm heartened to have gone on the journey with them.
Such a thrilling conclusion to this series! I loved this series so much, so happy this ended up turning into a quartet!
After reading the other three books earlier this year, I was super excited to read this one! I felt like this was the perfect way to wrap up the series. The drama in the American Royals always gets me. It is perfectly written. I was highly entertained the entire time. I loved the cameos that characters from previous books made. In my opinion, everyone's storylines ended exactly how they should. Sad the series is over, but it was perfect and I hope one day they do a television adaptation of it!
I cannot get enough of this YA series! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advanced copy of American Royals IV: Reign.
I keep recommending this series—in large part because of how it all wraps up in this last installation in the series! I know they’ll enjoy it start to finish & feel the same satisfaction that I did by the end of this book. I’m looking forward to what McGee comes up with next!
I’ve loved the American Royals series since I read Book 1 in 2020, and I have to say that REIGN provided the perfect wrapup to @katharinemcgee ‘s bingeworthy quartet!
I don’t want to give anything away so I’ll just say this: Pre-order this one ASAP! You won’t want to miss this fitting finale!!
Reign hits shelves Aug. 29!
For the Washington family, the stakes are higher than ever. Love might save the throne….if secrets don’t destroy everything first.
I thought this was a great conclusion to the American Royals series. Nina's story was particularly fitting for me. I love that she finally found her own story and started a journey she could call her own. I absolutely loved how all the characters story arcs played out. However, I do feel each one could be it's own book! Katherine McGee did a wonderful job.
Thank you @netgalley and @randomhousekids for letting me review this book.
Katharine McGee, I can't explain adequately how complex my feelings are about American Royals last installment- Reign. When I was approved for access to this title I was elated and then instantly felt myself deflate. Reign is the conclusion of the series.
In 2020, mid-shutdown, my friend recommended I read American Royals. Admittedly, after reading The Royal We by Heather Cocks, I was skeptical. I was looking for something on the lighter side when I was feeling so deeply dark and depressed about the isolation of the ongoing pandemic.
I am so glad I took her recommendation and dove into Katharine McGee’s series. I flew through books 1 and 2 and then patiently counted down until 2022 when Rivals released.
The series tells the stories of multiple characters, which is not easy to do well. What I value about Katharine McGee’s writing across the series is that damnit, I ended up having a soft spot for each and every one of them. From the jump, I loved Beatrice and her guarded, type A personality. Overtime, I grew fond of Nina and her chaos. I then realized how fun and serious Sam could be. Her bravery to break the status quo moved me. I even grew to love Daphne and her layered complexity. I even disliked all of them along the way too. My relationship (yes, I felt connected to these characters that much) with these four women was complicated across the series. I would call my friend up and drive for coffee and repeatedly ask her “Why did you introduce me to this series?! I can’t with [insert character who was particularly on my nerves at that given point in the book].
It created the necessary distraction I needed and allowed me to connect not only with my friend but with others in the reading community. This series is special to me for many reasons including my love for royalty, my guilty-pleasure of reality tv drama, and most importantly my need for hope and light during a really dark time.
I prolonged writing this, because I prolonged reading the ending of this series. I wasn't ready until now.
I still feel sad knowing their stories have ended, but now it’s my turn to just holler about this series to my fellow readers and encourage them to take the dive into this messy royal series that doesn’t disappoint.
Perhaps I shouldn’t call this a review of Reign, but rather a thank you letter to an author.
Thank you, Katharine McGee. I can’t wait to see what you come up with in the future!
I've loved this series since I read book 1 on NetGalley. I can't believe it's over. I will say since I was reading them as they came out, I always forgot everyone's love situation between books. I wish there had been a little recap at the beginning of the book.
Spoilers ahead.
I read this book mostly because I wanted to know how the series ends. Honestly, I’m glad it’s over. Most of the characters were boring and the plots points were unbelievable. I probably should have stopped with book one, but I just kept hoping something cool would happen. The series had a cool premise, What if we never had a democracy at all? There were so many things that could have been done to make this book interesting, instead we get a royal family that’s honestly kinda dumb.
Jeff being lied to and manipulated the entire time. Jeff and the royal mother believing Daphne was pregnant without so much as a blood test to confirm.
Nina, finally happy with someone else, still pining for Jeff and somehow blackmailing Ethan and Daphne which was so out of character for her. Nina was the only one I thought might have a chance at a good story. She’s actually supposed to be the smart one. Oh, and surprise, everything turns out okay in the end. I could keep going on, but it would be the same kind of rant. I’m just glad it’s over.
I loved this. I thought it was the perfect ending to the series although I didn't agree with where everyone ended up. I am so glad I got to go on this journey with Beatrice, Nina, Sam, and Daphne. I will always read Katharine McGee's books! Please let there be more!!
I thought this was a great ending to the American Royals series. There was tons of drama, character development, (even though Jeff sucks) and excellent pacing.
This was a great ending to a fun series. Each of the royals was in a bit of a disastrous place, some more than others, at the end of the last book, and this final book in the series managed to do an excellent job of pulling together each storyline.
I especially enjoyed Daphne's story line... I know she's a bit of a bad guy, but I always liked how clever she could be!
I have been following this story since the beginning. I loved American Royals and its sequel. By the time I reached the 3rd installment I was getting a little bored with the same thing over and over and unfortunately I felt similarly with this last book. Some of the relationships are just so repetitive and I'm over it.
However, I do love (most of) these characters and I'm so used to the world now that I still enjoyed being a part of it. There were definitely some new elements that made things interesting and allowed for some unique explorations into new and old feelings. I hate Daphne but I am so happy with how her story ended. It was perfect. Not everything ended exactly how I would have liked but it was still satisfying and didn't feel undone.
I had such high hope for this final book in Katharine McGee's American Royals series. I fell in love with book one and found the trajectory of our core female characters intriguing through book two, but book three fell short and Reign barely recovered the enthusiasm I had for the first two installments. Where the first two books developed complex and interesting characters Reign focused on tropes such as amnesia and did not fully flesh out the relationships between our core characters. McGee's initial idea of an American Royal Family soon to be lead by the first female monarch was fascinating, eye catching, and bingeable. I felt let down by Reign, our leads did not build upon previous character development and there were times where even the Gossip Girl-ness of the series was too far to believe. I would suggest this series to anyone who is looking for strong female characters of privilege looking to find themselves all within the constraints of monarchy.
Great ending to a series! I love that readers were left without a conclusion to Nina and Jeff! Everything else was wrapped up in a great way!
