This book was an amazing conclusion to this series. Whereas the third book was difficult at times to get into, I found I couldn’t read this one fast enough. With Beatrice’s memory fuzzy after her car accident, and men still angry that a woman is Queen by her own right, Beatrice finds herself fighting for her birthright while also fighting her memory. Daphne finally had the character growth that she deserved, after books of scheming. She found herself, and you found yourself rooting for her in the end. Sam’s character growth in this book is also phenomenal. Going from having your whole life planned out to nothing going the way it was planned is a lot to take in, and Sam rolled with the punches. Nina is the character who found herself in the biggest way, as she goes from “best friend of the princess” to her own person, taking a step away from her friends’ lifestyle, while still remaining true to them until the end. There was a lot in this series that needing wrapping up, as can happen in a series with every book told in multiple points of view, and this book did it perfectly. I’ll miss these characters but cannot wait to see what McGee does next
I thought this was a satisfying ending to the Royals series and I'm a little sad its over! I think this whole book series would make for such a good tv series. I would love to see these characters play out on the screen.
I thought that this book really wrapped up the series well and didn't leave any loose strings- I think it is frustrating when too much goes unresolved. I didn't love the amnesia storyline for Beatrice but it was managable. Beatrice, Sam, Nina, and Daphne all end up in a place that makes sense for their characters. Jeff's character doesn't really evolve or grow much, but we also never get his perspective.
Overall I would recommend this series, they were fun and I loved imagining the world where each country has its own royal family.
Looooved,,,, what a way to end the series. I am so sad it’s over but I adored this book! highly recommend to fans of the series… her best yet!
I found the concept of this series to be really interesting, and I loved the way it really brought the idea of a royal American family to life. The story really embraces the fascination that our society has with royals and famous people.
This book picked up right where the last one left off, with the royal family in disarray. It drove me crazy that Beatrice and Sam had to struggle and hurt so much throughout the book, but I really enjoyed how the direction of their story lives gave Jeff a chance to be something more than a pretty boy. The story explores the difficulties that each sibling faces as they struggle with their places in the birth order, the monarchy, the country, and even in their own relationships. I did enjoy seeing each of the characters grow and develop from the start of the series, and I wish there were more books coming. This one wraps the series up nicely though for those who have been following along from the beginning.
The American Royals series will always hold a special place in my heart since it was the book that got me back into reading at the start of the pandemic.
However, I can definitely say I was disappointed in this installment, especially since it was the final one.
I hate the amnesia trope, and even more so when the person doesn’t get their memories back. Add that on to it happening to my favorite character, and I’m even more disappointed.
McGee can’t seem to write a concrete ending either. I definitely wanted more loose ends tied up, and I felt like a few characters were treated poorly because of this.
I thought some of the exposition was extremely weak in this one as well.
Overall, I liken this series to The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. The original arc was great, but then when extra books started getting published, the quality suffered (I’m still a major Cassie Clare fan and like that series, but if you’ve read it or are familiar with the lore, you’ll understand this comparison). I wish this series had ended at Majesty, as originally intended.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher, and McGee for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
I desperately wanted to like this book. I loved the first one, but after that the stories all just felt juvenile. This book was no different. I don't feel like the characters made any growth and they just kept circling around the same problems and nothing really ever happened. I just wanted to throw my kindle across the room in frustration.
This book was a great conclusion to the series! It did not go the way I expected it to at all and it was a fun ride.
The American Royals series comes to an end with the final installment, Reign. I've enjoyed every book in this series and was excited to ready how McGee wrapped up all the loose threads she's been weaving over four books. Reign picks up right where the third book leaves off, so do read them all in order.
Overall Reign was enjoyable, but not my favorite in the series. Some of the plot lines felt repetitive and I wanted to see some further development in all four of our protagonists. Some of the plot lines got more closure than others but we do leave our friends Beatrice, Nina, Samantha, and Daphne in a good place for each of their story arcs.
I voluntarily read an early copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for the ARC! As sad as I am to see this series come to a close, Reign is a fitting send off. Looking forward to seeing what Katharine McGee has in store for us next!
Wow! I loved this series, and this book is tied with the first book as my favorite in the series! It had an uphill battle to tie everything together and end the series after the last book exploded every single plotline. Truly no one was safe, and not a single relationship (friendship, romantic, and family) was solid when this book began! But I loved how the plot tied everyone back together and let them grow towards the people they wanted to be. <spoiler> I loved how Bee ended the book strong in her position as Queen and with Teddy! They are so cute! I was annoyed that Nina and Jeff didn't end up together (they were my favorite ship of the season), but I loved that they chose themselves over a relationship. </spoiler> This book even made me love Daphne (I have had a love/hate relationship with her the entire series, understanding her character but being so annoyed by the destruction she caused). I love this series, and this fictional American Royal family, and I am so glad it ended on such a high note!
Thank you to Netgalley and Random House Books for Young Readers for this ARC in exchange for my honest review!
Katharine McGee delivers with another American Royals novel! I enjoyed that we returned to the capital city with this installment. Sad that this will be the conclusion of the series.
**SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Special shoutout to NetGalley for an ARC of the book! While this was a great read, it wasn't quite the best (satisfying) in the American Royal series. I found Sam and Marshall's story a bit too repetitive and boring. Beatrice was not a very interesting character to me, so I was not too invested in her love story with Teddy. I was fully invested in the Daphne, Nina, and Jeff storyline; have been since book 1. I loved that Nina and Jamie were an awesome couple and we even saw glimpses of Jeff's jealousy. I wish we saw more of that! Also, Jamie was really great to Nina so while I was Team Jeff and Nina, I still felt a little bad for Jamie. I wish he and Nina had an amicable break up so Jefferson and Nina could finally have their happily ever after. Next, I REALLY wish Jeff knew the extent of what Daphne did. From her affair with Ethan, to sabotaging Nina and Jeff's relationship and even setting up Ethan with Nina, I really wish Jeff knew about all of it! This would have given Jeff an opportunity to truly apologize to Nina for everything and win her back. I love the American Royal Stories and I hope that this is not the end!! We get to see more of our beloved characters! A Jeff and Nina engagement perhaps?
Thank you again NetGalley and Random House for the ARC!
This is a fitting close to a great series. The American Royals books have been like a guilty pleasure so I was very excited when the ARC became available. While not my favorite of the 4 books, this did flesh the characters out and gave them all closure.
Book 4 starts off a month after Queen Beatrice's car accident, which has left her in a coma. Samantha and Marshall have run off to Hawaii where they have no diplomatic privileges and can be off the grid. Prince Jefferson is the acting king and engaged to Daphne, who is lying about being pregnant. Nina is back at school trying to forget all that has happened and just act normal for a change.
This installment really is a way to wrap up the series. It forces all of the characters to dig a little deeper and discover who they are at the core. A fun read for fans of the series.
Such a good ending to the American Royals series! Nina, Samantha, Daphne, and Beatrice all grew in this final installment, and their individual stories reached endings that will leave readers satisfied. I was very happy to read this book as I was on the fence about book 3, but this one, especially as we see how the Nina/Daphne saga played out, put that concern to rest. Each young woman stands on her own! Samantha and Daphne see the biggest character arcs, in my opinion, from their very beginnings. Definitely worth a purchase when it releases in August!
Katharine McGee picks up right where Rivals picks up. In the series finale, readers will learn the fate of Beatrice, Sam, Jefferson, Daphne, Nina, and Teddy.
A perfect ending to one of my favorite young adult series to date! Nina, Samantha, Daphne and Beatrice are four women slowly changing the world while finding themselves. I couldn’t think of a better way for their stories to end!
The final book in this amazing speculative fiction series that is like Gossip Girls meets The Royal We meets Hamilton for young adult readers. It opens with Queen Beatrice in a coma, Prince Jefferson named regent, and sister Samantha MIA and stripped of her title. As in previous volumes, social climber Daphne continues to angle for the prince’s hand while Nina lusts after him from afar; Bea has some fond memories of bodyguard while she’s engaged to Teddy ; and Sam is still with Marshall.
For those not familiar with the series, American Royals cleverly speculates about America having a regency instead of democracy, with George Washington named the King of America in the late 1700s; political issues and court intrigue combine to the plot play out with wealth, connection and interpersonal relationships. As in other books, this capstone features high drama, swoon-worthy romance, haute couture, and did I mention the drama? McGee finishes strong and does wrap everything up in a satisfying and sometimes unpredictable ending, and absolutely still left room for some characters to continue to grow, but I’m sad to say goodbye to this ensemble.
Sidenote: I really love the flat, bright, clean, modern cover art in red, white, and blue–it creates a cohesive look to the series.
I received a free advance reader’s review copy of #AmericanRoyalsIVReign from #NetGalley.
A wonderful, solid end to this series. This book wraps things up and gives the reader closure while remaining true to the characters and storyline that was developed in the previous books. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!
A very solid ending to the series. I was not a fan at all with the book prior to this one. It seemed very much like a filler book with all the events very dragged out which made it so slow. This book tied up a lot of loose ends and in general but left wiggle room at the end for speculation and interpretation. I feel like if the author wanted to continue with this series she could, but as a reader I am content with the ending. This book made me like Beatrice more, who has been my least favorite storyline to follow and made me like Nina slightly less. A solid reason that I will recommend to students!
I am seriously so sad that this is last book for American Royals! I have been a fan since the very beginning, and I feel as though I know these characters on a personal level! However, this was a great book to end on as it was super redemptive for so many characters. I will truly miss my American Royals fix, but I guess that means I will just need to read them again and again! Loved this book. so much!
