Great read, loved the suspense. Took me a bit to get into it but once in, couldn’t put it down, Now I have to read the next ones. Loved Wilbur! Made me laugh.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own
4.5/5 stars! I didn't have super high hopes for this story because I haven't heard of the author and the cover was meh in my opinion. However, I was pleasantly surprised. I really liked how cozy this story was. It reminded me of "Legends and Lattes" and "Forgery of Magic." This is the sea creature equivalent to those and I highly recommend it.
I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review
Arwyn Corey is a powerful seer - part of the Corey wicche clan and part water fae - she spends her time baking and preparing her art gallery for its grand opening. When dark magic begins to creep into Arwyn's home, she will have to rely on her magic her family and her new werewolf carpenter to hunt down the sorcerer and stop a child serial killer.
Readers of Ms Kelly's Sam Quinn series, will be delighted by this companion series (which can be read as a standalone) that explores the more wicchey side of the universe. I love the new characters. Arwyn's gifts have her a more cautious heroine (not that readers mind watching Sam wander into trouble) and I adore her relationship with the ocean. I can't wait to dive into more of Arwyn's adventures.
First time I've read anything by this author and I might have to check out more of her books, because this one had me laughing because of the main character and her sassyness . As well as the magic she had her characters have .
The wicches in the Corey family were always full of magic and Arwyn Cassandra Corey is no different. As a clairvoyant, Arwyn always wears her gloves to prevent see the lives of others and wants nothing more than to renovate her cannery into an art gallery and tea bar. However, after her encounter with a handsome werewolf on the construction crew completing the renovations, Arwyn’s calm life takes a turn. Asked by the local police for assistance, Arwyn becomes embroiled with figuring out who keeps kidnapping children and murdering them.
Verdict: This is the first book in the Sea Wicche Chronicles; however, characters from Kelly’s previous series featuring Sam Quinn make an appearance. Set in the same world and time period of the Sam Quinn series, Bewicched is a solid first book of the series. There is plenty of angst and drama and Arwyn clearly struggles with her lot in life. Overall, this is a solid 3.5 stars and a great way to spend an afternoon curled up with a book.
*Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for providing a ARC in exchange for an honest review*
I thought this book was a great read. The characters are realistic and I loved the snarky/witty banter between the characters. The plot was smooth and intriguing. It caught my attention in the first chapter. I can't wait to read the next book in this dynamic new series.
Let me say straight off the bat - this is not as good as the Sam Quinn series. Sam Quinn is that girl and Sam Quinn is that series!! It would take a miracle to meet up to those expectations. That doesn't mean this is in any way a bad book. It's just not up to par with perfection, but who among us is?
Bewicched follows Arwyn, a clairvoyant Corey sea fae wicche, the daughter of a wicche mother and a sea fae father. Using her clairvoyant abilities she gets caught up in hunting two killers while also renovating her new gallery by the sea. Also there is also a nomad werewolf who hates psychics and is building her a deck. Angsty stuff.
There are two plots within this book - a threat within the Corey family involving a demon, and a kidnapping of a young boy. Both have nothing to do with each other. Both focus on what makes someone 'evil.' Following the threads of both plots was a little draining. The crimes are dark and the emotional toll of reading these types of crimes is hard. I was unaware of the child kidnapping plot and I think that should have been in the synopsis, to let readers be aware (especially as it can be triggering for some people).
Arwyn is in a bit of a pickle. Her grandmother and mother are pressuring her into a commitment that she wants no part in. A Council seat is of power and privilege, but also a dangerous and draining position.
"Arwyn, you know we love you." Mom stood tall, but her right hand trembled.
"Sure." I swallowed. "But you love what I can do more."
Arwyn's clairvoyance is the strongest in her family line. Her power comes at the cost of visions filled with horror and pain. The Corey wicche's before Arwyn who were blessed with clairvoyance, lived short miserable lives, usually ended by their own hands. Arwyn doesn't wish that fate to come before her, and joining the Council will not only invite these visions, but fast-track her to a shortened life expectancy. To experience the visions, there is no separation as the wicche lives the vision, they feel the blows of fists, or the water drowning their lungs, and they feel the torture of a serial killer victim. They experience it, revisit it in dreams and have to live with the all the horrors of that encapsulates the worst of humanity. Denying the seat means ensuring a few more years of sanity, years of less pain, and years alive.
"My pain isn't important, only how I make myself useful to others, isn't that it?"
Plot A: The call is coming from inside the house
There is evil lurking within the family and it's up to Arwyn to weed out the killer. One of the wicches in the family is working hand-in-hand with a demon. They want power, and they want the final seat at the Corey Council. The lives of her family are at stake. This plot allows the insertion of other characters in the Sam Quinn Universe™.
I wish the main focus of the book was simply Plot A with Arwyns struggling with being clairvoyant and joining the Corey Council. This alone was interesting, reading about her visions, trying to decipher their meanings. Arwyn cannot touch anyone without a transfer of power, allowing her to see their current thoughts and their past. Helping others with a power she perceives as a 'curse' is interesting enough without the insertion of Plot B. Frankly, Plot B muddles Plot A. Splitting focus makes both plots harder to follow.
"I had to choose between my own happiness and everyone's safety. Why did the universe hate me so much?"
Plot B: Only thing worse than a killer. Boom! A child. No, A child killer.
A kidnapping of a young child brings the police to Arwyn's door. Despite being sceptical of her powers, this is the last shot at finding the child. This is a tough plot to read about. Please be warned if you pick this up.There is a lot of violent details and depressing moments. Reading about the missing children and what they go through is gut-wrenching. You are uncomfortable the entire time and going back to Plot A feels jarring.
Personally, Plot B it feels a little unnecessary. It is a harrowing read, making you question if someone could be born 'evil'. Is it nature? Nuture? The unlucky few in the genetic lottery? idk the answer other than it makes me sad.
The elephant werewolf in the room.
Arwyn's relationship quickly develops with the werewolf carpenter Declan. They are soon inseparable, spending almost all day and night together. It got hot and heavy very fast, (personally, I think too fast) and were soon dry humping each other.
Declan is a lone wolf, and wants to keep it that way. Unfortunately for him, others flock to him, as he is a powerful Alpha with experience and knowledge he can bestow on others. He can make a pack stronger, and safer. I am interested to read more about him being forced to be the new Alpha and how the new relationship with Arwyn will be impacted by this. His Quinn heritage will also be an interesting facet to explore, especially as Sam Quinn is meant to be the werewolf Queen (whatever that means).
I think what weirded me out was the family relationship between Sam Quinn, Arwyn and Declan. Let's think this through. Sam Quinn is a Corey wicche. That means Arwyn is her aunt's daughter, making them first cousins. Declan is stated to be Sam's uncle. So Sam's uncle is dating her first cousin. Weird. I don't like how close that is. Almost kissing cousins.
Would I recommend this book?
Yes - but I recommend reading the Sam Quinn series first (the first book is The Slaughtered Lamb Bookstore and Bar)
Will I re-read this book/series?
Potentially, I would re-read this book but I would prefer to pick up the Sam Quinn series.
Thank you Netgalley for the advance reader copy of Bewicched: The Sea Wicche Chronicles by Seana Kelly in exchange for an honest review. I loved this book. I have read all the Sam Quinn series and when I saw a new series by the same author I was very excited, and then getting the ARC I was elated. I really enjoyed the new characters and how well developed they were. Arwyn(I might have spelled this wrong and I'm sorry) makes a fascinating main character. She is kind, funny and extremely empathetic, and is someone I wish I knew. You know it's a great book when you wish you were friends with the main characters and part of the book world.
Another great series from a great urban fantasy writer. I loved her Sam Quinn series and this one is maybe even better? This series has the seamless world building, great characters, compelling plotlines, and snarky dialog that all of Kelly's book's have, but this one has the extra something (maybe it's the sea creature friends or just that I like Arwyn a smidge more than Sam Quinn (just barely I promise)).
There are some very dark plotlines, but unlike with other authors, Kelly's handles it deftly and I wasn't immediately shoving the book in the freezer or haunted by the horrors of humanity. I think because there is such a depth of humanity shown - you see the worst of humanity like Arwyn but then it's balanced with the good.
This book ends with a bit of a cliffhanger so I cannot wait for the rest of this series (or anything else this author writes).
Great spin-off in the Seana Kelly world. I loved the main character and look forward to getting to know more about her, her family and the werewolves. I would highly recommend this book to others.
Arwyn is a Sea Wicche who lives in Monterey near the ocean and is building her art/tea bar gallery. The crew she hires happens to come with a werewolf names Declan who can build her deck and any other wood work she may need done. Arwyn has many things coming at her all at once, her family has problems and they are demanding much of her time, she is having visions that puts her square in the middle of a murder and she has to figure out what is happening between her and Declan. Oh and one more thing there maybe a Sorcerer in her family.
Though I received a free copy of this story prior to release for a honest review I have to say I plan on purchasing it when it comes out since it was such a wonderful story.
The Sea Wicche Chronicles is a new series set in the same world as the wonderful Sam Quinn series by Seana Kelly. There is some crossover between the series which is very welcome. Arwyn is a Sea Wicche with very unusual talents. Right at the the beginning of the book she meets Declan, who is a werewolf. They both have many family discoveries and issues to work though while trying to help the local law enforcement catch a serial killer. I like this tie in with local crimes as it will be interesting to see how her magic will be used to help solve the crimes. This is a fun start to this new series and I can't wait to read the next book in both series.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. Though there is enough detail to fill the reader in, I recommend being up to date on the Sam Quinn series before starting Arwynn’s series. The Sea Wicche has all the great qualities of the Sam Quinn series but with a fresh perspective and a little more mystery in Arwynn. Both series are awesome read for long weekends/vacation. Loved The Sea Wicche and bummed to have to wait until 2o24 for the next installment!
Arwyn's voice is the strongest part of this contemporary fantasy series starter. Readers will either fall in love with her on the first page or immediately know that the book's humor isn't for them. I personally loved both Arwyn and her sense of humor, which made this book a quick read. The pacing is generally quick, as the reader is introduced to the main characters and conflict quite soon, and an enjoyable mystery unfolds from there. I thought that the love interest's feelings for Arwyn arose somewhat quickly and randomly, but attraction can work like that sometimes. Arwyn's reciprocation of his feelings was more of a slow burn. I will be looking out for book two in this series!
This was good. However check trigger warnings before you read this! However the main story line is good and I would want to read the next book when it comes out.
I just reviewed Bewicched: The Sea Wicche Chronicles by Seana Kelly. #Bewicched #NetGalley
