Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this book. It was not at all what I expected and was quite a disappointment. There was only one chapter about a wedding day and that was when Nic & Alice actually got married. The description of Corfu makes one want to hop a plane and go there. The characters were one dimensional and there was nothing thrilling about the book. Many of the chapters ended on a cliffhanger but didn't pick up until two chapters later. The main character Alice was neurotic and too naive for a woman of her age. However, there were a couple of twists that came as a surprise. I'd recommend a different title for this book - The Runaway (because that's what Alice is) or Voices. All told I wouldn't recommend it as I found it less than it was supposed to be.
This book starts with our main character trying to come to terms with her new life. She is recently divorced after her husband was unfaithful and it really took a tole on her well being. After Alice unfortunately runs into her ex Dan with his new pregnant girlfriend that is when Alice really starts to spiral out of control. There was a situation that happened however Alice is unable to recall exactly the events that took place. All she knows is that something wrong happened and the police now believe that she is responsible for the murder of Dan. But that can’t be right she isn’t a cold blooded killer. Or is she? Unable to clear her name and in fear she decides to flee the country and start fresh. New friends, new boyfriend a whole new life all together, what could possibly go wrong? When Alice and Nick connect it is instant fireworks and the two hit it off instantly. It isn’t long before they decide that a wedding will be in their future. I was so excited to read this book because the plot sounded very unique and it was by my favourite author so what could go wrong? And I loved it for the most part however I was a little disappointed in the beginning because especially for Sue this was a very slow start and it took everything in me to continue reading it because I just kept putting it down places. Thankfully once I got over the first hurdle the book took off like a wild fire and I was hooked just like I knew I would be. I did find it slightly confusing at times however with all of the time jumps but I understand why it was important to the story I just found it to be a little jarring at times. While this book was a little slower than I expected it was still a fairly good read the only thing I would change is I would focus more on the plot and leave out some of the not so important details. Pretty good read just a few things that weren’t my favourite but I enjoyed it non the less.
This read has it all - foreign travel, an unbeatable location, secrets and lies and a very naive young woman about to marry her handsome - and rich- Greek god. And of course there is danger lurking!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC!
The Wedding Day is Sue Watson’s newest stand-alone thriller. It’s a tale told by an unreliable narrator that jumps around in time.
44-year-old Alice’s life is in shambles. She’s been separated from her husband for 1 year and she is living with her older sister and teenage twin nieces. She suffered multiple miscarriages during her 4-year marriage and is haunted by the babies that she will never have. She is an alcoholic and is in danger of losing her Customer Service job for a telephone company due to her unreliability.
When Alice runs into a Tesco Express to buy some wine, she encounters her ex-husband, Dan, with his younger and very pregnant wife, Della. Alice blacks out but believes she hit Dan with her wine bottles because her coat is covered with wine and blood. She flees London for Corfu, a Greek island where they had spent their honeymoon.
In Corfu Alice sees posters of missing middle-aged women and is intrigued by the unsolved disappearances. She and her sister, Heather, begin to play armchair detectives over the telephone. Meanwhile she befriends Sylvie, a successful middle-aged wedding planner, and Nik Kouris, a handsome vineyard owner. Alice quickly begins a romantic relationship with Nik and they get married. However on their wedding day the police show up to arrest Alice for her attack on Dan.
Strange things begin happening to Alice after she moves into Nik’s house. She continues to have black-outs and she doesn’t know who she can trust. She is disliked by Sylvie’s younger employee, Angelina, and is afraid of Dimitri, who works at the vineyard. There are a lot of twists and turns in The Wedding Day with a surprise ending.
The Wedding Day has a good plot, but Alice is just an unsympathetic and unlikeable character due to her alcoholism, in my opinion. I finished the story to find out what happened, but I wasn’t worried if Alice would survive. Alice’s sister, Heather, was the most likeable character because she was a genuinely good person. Interestingly this was the first book that I have read that mentions characters vaping.
I received an Advance Review Copy (ARC) from NetGalley and Bookouture for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I've read a couple of Sue Watson's books and I have loved most of them. The Wedding Day was a cleaver quick read with a thriller background. This one just didn't do it for me, but I will continue to read whatever Ms. Watson puts out. Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy.
OMG! Sue Watson does it again. This tense mystery kept me on the edge the whole time. I felt my nerves ticking away as poor Alice fell deeper down that rabbit hole.
I absolutely love Corfu Town and with ‘The Wedding Day’ being partly set there, I found myself imagining the areas where Alice would be drinking her coffee and walking around. I enjoyed the glitz and glamour of Sylvia’s world and the gorgeous, yet eerie vineyard that Dimitris owned.
The opening had me stunned as it thrusted me into Alice’s world. It totally gave me the feels that I was right there with her, experiencing the hellish situation that she’d entered. My lack of trust in anyone and everyone definitely played with my nerves. I think I bit down a couple of fingernails as I flicked the pages over.
If you love a killer mystery/psychological thriller that you can try to fathom out as you go along, this is it. Enjoy this twisty and thrilling wonder!
I've read quite a few of Sue Watson's books, and this one is definitely my favorite. A solid four star book. Good length, great writing, interesting plot. Something different. It takes place on Corfu in Greece. Alice goes there to clear her head after a bad divorce and resolve trauma from her trip to Corfu on her honeymoon. While she was there previously, she noticed multiple women posterrs all over town. While there she makes a friend in Sulvie and the two seem to get along great. She also meets Nik. A handsome man who owns a winery. Nik and Alice soon fall in love and get married. There are other characters, all playing a crucial role in the story. Alice soon moves into Mik's home before the wedding and the twists start coming. Twist after twist until the very end of the book. I totally enjoyed this book and highly recommend. Great Job Ms. Watson. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the Kindle ARC. Alice is unstable and drinks too much after a painful divorce. She sometimes blacks out and is accused of things she doesn't remember doing. When an incident between her ex-husband and his pregnant wife happens in a grocery store, the police become involved. Alice decides to go to Corfu to escape the potential charges against her. The Wedding Day is a suspense/thriller which was one in which the reader must suspend disbelief in order to enjoy it. Some of the story until about halfway through is a bit slow. There are plenty of twists and turns in the final chapters of the book. It was a quick read- good for readers who enjoy unlikely storylines with lots of twists.
A really twisty book with a clever plot. This is a fast read you won't want to put down, The Wedding day is a suspenseful psychological thriller with characters that each hold their own secrets. I think this will be an enjoyable read for anyone who likes thrillers.
The Wedding Day by Sue Watson.
This author is incapable of writing a bad book , and as with all the others , a fab novel. Love her !
Alice and Dan were married but now divorced somewhat due to infertility.
He seems to quickly move on , and Alice is devastated to discover his gf Molly is expecting.
Alice escapes abroad and tries to start a new life , however just as she begins to move forward into starting a new life she receives a visit from the police.
The book starts as a slow burn but quickly escalates until you finding yourself racing through it on the edge of your seat.
What initially seems like a get away story to beautiful Corfu, Greece, will have you wanting to pack your sunscreen and designer flip flops. The story moves along quickly with twists and turns. Alice was warned not to trust anyone but……. She’s one of those characters that you just want to reach out to and shake- could she be any more unsuspecting and gullible? Is it all smoke and mirrors?
Thank You to NetGalley and Bookouture, and Sue Watson for the opportunity to read this ARC.
now this book has it all Addictive twisty gripping this author is so good. Alice has lost it all her husband house. Her sister and nieces are her lifeline. but it's going to get worse. Alice gets accused of hitting her ex-husband over the head.in Tesco s with a wine bottle as she has a shock he has a new woman, and she is pregnant. Alice can't remember doing it as is used to have blackouts she gets arrested on the train then let out while they build up a case. so, Alice decides to run and hide.to Corfu. She has always wanted to find out what has happened to the missing women. and there she meets. Sylvie and then she meets the Vinyard owner Nick. And they are getting married. won't say no more but oh so good.
I enjoyed this novel although if I am honest not as much as others by this author.
It was a slow burn and Alice's obsession with Dan and her heavy drinking really annoyed me.
Besides for the heavy drinking and After that part, I enjoyed the story however the characters were very unlikable
The writing, the twists, the story is what I loved most about this book
thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for approving me a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
All thoughts and opinions are my own and aren't influenced by anyone else
I read this in two sittings.
Alice is divorced from Dan and is still getting over it when she bumps into him with his girlfriend in the supermarket. What's totally shocking is that she is pregnant. Alice and Dan were unable to conceive. After an altercation, Alice flees to Corfu.
I found the first half of the book quite a struggle to read. I couldn't warm to Alice. She seemed self pitying, and it was quite repetitive in places.
The second half really hotted up, and there were plenty of shocks.
I did guess one or two things, but overall, I was not expecting that scenario. I thought it was a very clever plot. The ending was brilliant.
I love Sue's books and I would definitely recommend this one.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC in return for an honest review.
This was a fantastic book! I was gripped from the first few pages. Alice was a character I invested in very early on. The plot was maybe slightly less pacy than a typical Sue Watson book, but that said, the suspense more than made up for the slower-burn plot. And what a plot it was. I enjoyed every moment of reading The Wedding Day and would highly recommend it to fans of K L Slater and T M. Logan. Five stars!
Alice has had a tough time since finalising her divorce from Dan, coming to terms with her infertility, and marinating her pain in alcohol to relieve her bad dreams. After an unfortunate altercation with her ex, too foggy to completely recall, she decides to flee to Corfu to gain a new perspective. She quickly finds a new best friend, Sylvie, and gets caught up in a whirlwind romance with Nik. Life seems to finally be turning Alice's lemons into lemonade, despite her sister's panicked concern. Things sour, however, when Nik is arrested on their wedding day. 'just like Instagram, real life is never quite as pretty as it seems.'
When I started reading this story, I was unsure. Alice has a vague memory of some events, while also alluding to historical trauma, so it was difficult for me to connect. However, after the halfway point, the story really started coming together for me and I really started wondering how everything was going to be resolved. And, as with the only other Sue Watson story I've read, 'The Nursery', the end is never really the end. Overall, a good read for all psychological thriller lovers.
Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for an early copy of The Wedding Day. I get a smile on my face when I see a Sue Watson book, this one took a looooooooong time to get to the craziness. I knew something was definitely going on with Nik, Alice was tooooo ridiculous of a character in regards to her relationship with her fiancé. When the twists finally started, they didn’t stop!!!! I’m just sad that it was way towards the end.
I was kindly given this ARC by NetGalley which I am extremely grateful for
This book was AMAZING! Kept me on the edge of my seat, characters were wonderfully flawed and it kept me guessing right until the final chapter! I cannot wait to read more!
‘The Wedding Day’ is the latest novel by Sue Watson who has become one of my must read authors. This is an exciting thriller that kept me gripped throughout.
Alice, who is still reeling from her divorce from Dan and decides to visit him on Valentine’s Day, only to find out that he has moved on with a new girlfriend, Molly. After a traumatic event, Alice flees to the idyllic Greek island of Corfu where she meets Nik, an older and charming man.
Alice’s relationship with Nik quickly escalates but just as Alice’s life seems to be taking a turn for the better, the police arrive on her wedding day, throwing everything into chaos. The investigation that follows will leave readers guessing until the very end.
I enjoyed this novel although if I am honest not as much as others by this author but she has set the bar so high. That said it is still a very enjoyable quick read
Author Sue Watson does an excellent job of building suspense and keeping readers engaged with the story.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Bookouture for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
"The Wedding Day" by Sue Watson is a gripping psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Despite the predictable ending, the tension and suspense throughout the novel are masterfully crafted. Sue Watson's writing is excellent, particularly in her character development, which will have you invested in the protagonist's story from the very beginning.
The story revolves around a bride and groom on their wedding day, but not all is as it seems. The bride is hiding a secret that could tear everything apart, and as she navigates the day's events, the tension and suspense build to a chilling climax.
Overall, I would give "The Wedding Day" 3.5 stars. If you're a fan of psychological thrillers, you'll enjoy this book, despite the predictable ending. The slow burn and excellent character development make it a worthwhile read. So, if you're in the mood for a suspenseful and well-crafted psychological thriller, "The Wedding Day" by Sue Watson is definitely worth checking out.
