I really enjoyed The Hidden Language of Cats by Sarah Brown! There is a cat in the house I live in but I don't take care of her and am not used to living with dogs or cats. While reading this I found myself thinking and even looking at Lucy the cat differently! I learned so much about our feline friends including their history and seminal cat studies. This is a great introduction to learn more about your cat(s)!

This was a great intro to how cats communicate with eachother and people, especially their owners. I really liked how the author included examples from his personal interactions with cats throughout her life.

I'm of two minds about this book. While I like the idea of a book looking at scientific studies on cat communication and behavior, it often seems that the conclusions drawn from these studies is wrong-headed or just irrelevant. In addition, Brown often sometimes writes convoluted sentences and paragraphs that contradict themselves. Much s I love cats and would welcome a scientific book of this sort, I was cheated out of the book I expected.

This book is so fascinating. If you love cats and are interested in learning more about them, this book should definitely be on your list. There was so many bits that I didn’t know.

The earlier part of the book talks about the history and domestication of the house cat. Then Dr. Brown begins moving through cat behaviors and demystifying them all. She takes her observations from several groups including a feral colony as well as cats who are well socialized with humans. One of the many facts that startled me was that cats don’t meow to communicate with other cats. There’s so much to be learned about the cat and Dr. Brown made it easy and fun to dive into it.

She balances scientific facts with sweet anecdotes of her own experiences with cats so as to make it a very engaging read. One of my favorite surprise additions were the sweet illustrations of cats depicting the various activities described. If you like and enjoy cats, you’ll love this book.

A special thanks to the Penguin Group and NetGalley for my ARC in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
