This was such an amazing read, It’s a page turner with plenty of twists and turns, that I couldn’t put down, It was full of surprises and the ending was just excellent. The characters were intriguing, the story itself was superb and the style of writing was perfect. I have read books by this author before and they were so good, so I knew that this would be brilliant. I couldn’t wait to get started:
I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys reading psychological thrillers.
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a honest review.
Wow! Miranda Rijks has done it again; this is another fantastic domestic thriller.
It had me hooked from page one and the twists just kept coming.
It’s a great read and one that I’d definitely recommend.
Such an interesting story as I could absolutely see this happening and was intrigued to read how the different people responded - everyone became a suspect. The author has a style which I particularly like and does not over-dramatise - indeed, the story does not need it.
The Other Mother is the story of four-year-old Florrie, who goes missing. Jane is asked by Nala to pick her up from school and take her to the dentist appointment because she is tied up in a meeting and can't get away to take her daughter herself. Jane agrees and arrives a few minutes late to pick up Florrie and is told that someone else picked her up just a few minutes ago. Jane panics and rushes off to the dentist to see if she was taken there but she was not. Jane then races back to the school and doesn't get any satisfactory answers and tells them to call the police since the child has been abducted.
Jane's life doesn't get any easier when she learns a secret about her husband, her daughter is outwardly hostile to her, and her son seems to be making poor choices.
Nala's life is turned upside down when her daughter goes missing and her husband puts the blame solely on her shoulders. Pregnant with another child she starts to have problems due to the stress she is dealing with.
These two families are locked together by a secret that is only just revealed and it will put both marriages at risk.
Jane will become a victim of identity fraud while trying to find the person responsible she will come face to face with a killer that she thought was a friend. As everything piles up will Jane be able to save herself as she gets to the bottom of this mystery involving the people she cares about the most.
This was a quick afternoon read. It is very twisted and some of it you can see coming a mile away, but there are several twists that are an entertaining surprise. The only thing I wasn't fond of was the way Elsa behaved, I never understood the reasoning behind her anger towards her mother. It just didn't seem to be resolved enough for me.
A drama filled thriller, full of twists and turns. This novel is so intense, suspenseful and full of tests and turns I felt like I was on the edge of my seat throughout. I also loved that I didn't see a lot of it coming and there was a lot of surprises to keep you hooked and interested. For a scary, suspenseful thriller which is all mothers biggest fears I would recommend.
This was another fantastic thriller from this author. I have now read all of her books and they are honestly all great with great twists and turns which keep you hooked.
Jane's best friend has a work training that is running late, but she needs to get her daughter to a dentist appointment, so she asks Jane gets caught up at work making her 10 minutes late to pick her up. When Jane arrive she's told that her friends daughter has been picked up by someone claiming to be Jane. This thriller is told from different perspectives which make it more intriguing. It had so many twists and turns and the ending was great. Fantastic thriller which I will be recommending to everyone.
A great read full of drama revolving around a missing child ,puts the spotlight on so called perfect family ,and close friends .
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Jane's best friend has a work training that is running late, but she needs to get her daughter to a dentist appointment, so she asks Jane to pick her up for her. But Jane gets a phone call from a patient she can't ignore and ends up arriving at the school ten minutes late. Imagine her horror when she's told that little Florrie already left with someone who claimed to be Jane and she realizes that Florrie is actually missing.
This is literally one of my biggest fears and I feel like that helped make the book that much more intense. The characters were so well written and all the twists and turns throughout this book made it so enjoyable to read. Everybody has secrets and the way they were untangled by the author made it so you couldn't put the book down. This was definitely a five star book for me.
Miranda Rijks The Other Mother Inkubator Books, 2023.
Thank you NetGalley for providing me with this uncorrected proof for review.
The Other Mother is an awkward read, predominantly because while a child has been abducted, there is little sense of urgency about solving the crime. Rijks tells several women’s stories, including that of the mother of the missing child. While these stories revolve around four-year-old Florrie and interactions with her parents, the police and friends, at times they detract from the enormity of the kidnap.
The two main characters are Nala, Florrie’s mother, and Jane, her friend and the woman who should have collected Florrie. In her interactions with her friends, husband and the police Nala’s feelings seem relatively unengaged with the horror of Florrie’s disappearance for several days. Jane, who has been impersonated by the kidnapper when she is late to collect Florrie, while distressed, is also engrossed by her other responsibilities. Other characters’ stories are woven throughout and seem to vie with the main narrative for precedence.
The resolution is similarly complicated by several threads: jealously, infidelity and other marriage problems, friendships that flounder, teenage angst, and past grievances. None of the characters was particularly pleasant and the twist at the end was predictable, only serving to emphasise the unpleasantness of one character and failure of another.
I have read several of Miranda Rijks’ novels and have always found them enjoyable reads for the beach. Unfortunately, The Other Mother does not live up to her other work and I was disappointed.
Four-year-old Florence goes missing. Everyone in her mother's and her aunt's life become a suspect.
I was intrigued from the start, though this did take until about 20% to really get going. But then it picks up speed and runs at a rapid pace as new clues are picked up to implicate different people. It wad a whirlwind of red herrings. Not to mention the shocking twists and revelations.
I was so excited when I saw a new book from Rijks and it did not disappoint. A must read thriller with heart pounding suspense and captivating mystery.
This was such a fantastic read! All of Miranda's books are quick, propulsive and leave you wanting more! Easy 4 star for me!!!!!
I have read a few other books by this author and enjoyed them all. This one is no exception to that.
Jane is asked by a friend to pick up her daughter at school. When Jane arrives, someone else pretending to be Jane has already left with Florrie.
I needed to suspend belief a bit with some parts of the book. I felt the school took Florrie's disappearance way to lightly. How was an imposter even able to take her in the first place.?
I was intrigued by the story and interested to find out just who did take Florrie and why. The characters were well written even though I actually liked very few of them.
Didn't see the twist coming as there were many possibilities on who could be the culprit.
Can't wait to see what the author comes up with next.
Thanks to netgalley and Inkubator Books for the arc.
When Jane is asked to pick up her friends four-year-old daughter, Florrie, from school, she can't imagine the horror that will unfold. Because someone pretending to be Jane has already collected Florrie. And now the little four-year-old is missing. Things don't get any easier when she starts receiving anonymous letters that include intimate details about her life. As a psychologist and agony aunt, she's used to getting letters asking for advice, but these are different. Are they somehow connected to the missing child?
I quickly became a huge fam of Miranda Rijks. I was pulled in from the first page., needing to know what had happened to Florrie. The pace is fast, it's filled with twists and red herrings. Everyone became a suspect when Florrie went missing. Not all the characters are likeable, but they are well developed. Lots of long kept secrets were revealed. We see how the kidnapping of a four-year-old girl affects friend and relationships. This is a well written psychological thriller.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #InkubatorBooks and the author #MirandaRijks for my ARC of #TheOtherMother in exchange for an honest review.
The title alone for this book gave me "Coroline" vibes so I instantly wanted to read it based off the title alone!
A fast paced thriller that I couldn't put down and I stayed up late into the night just to see the outcome and because I couldn't help but wonder if Florrie was okay!
I definitely want to pick up more by this author!
Every book that Miranda Rijks is amazing!! I just finished The Other Mother, and absolutely loved it! The author did a great job of telling a thrilling story told from different perspectives; characters that felt so real, I loved/hated them. My favorite part was the ending, because just like other Rijks books, I never saw it coming!!
“The Other Mother” by author Miranda Rijks is a gripping psychological thriller that is set at a ferocious pace. From the moment four-year-old Florrie goes missing, the tension builds as the reader joins protagonist Jane in her search for the missing child.
Miranda Rijks weaves together a web of deceit, suspicion, and betrayal, leaving the reader constantly guessing as to who might be responsible for Florrie’s disappearance. The plot twists and turns in unexpected ways, and the author keeps you guessing until the very end.
What sets “The Other Mother” apart from other thrillers is the way it explores the emotional toll that a missing child can have on a family. As Jane’s marriage falls apart and her once-successful business crumbles under the stress, the reader is given a powerful insight into the devastating impact that such a tragedy can have.
Despite the difficult subject matter, “The Other Mother” is a compulsively readable book that is impossible to put down. Miranda Rijks certainly knows how to write fast paced page turners and yet again I was unable to put one of her books down until I had finished it.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Inkubator books for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
“The Other Mother” is a thriller by Miranda Rijks. In this book, we’ve a number of characters: Naomi - the mother of Florence (Flossie), who asks Jane - her friend and a therapist - to pick up Flossie from school. When Jane gets to the school, Flossie has already been picked up - and is now missing. This book has a number of reliable characters and, in a large sense, unlikeable characters too. Jane’s daughter seemed to be “always mad” to just be always mad. Naomi’s husband, Lorenzo, has an unpleasant mother who is just unpleasant in general. Most of the chapters are from both Naomi and Jane’s POVs, though a few other chapters are told from the POV of another character. Jane has secrets - her husband has secrets - Lorenzo has secrets - and no one wants their secrets to be out in the open. I did find the person who kidnapped Flossie to come out of left field, but Ms. Rijks made a great attempt at filling in the background story. I found the scene where Jane was trying to figure out potential identity theft to be kinda close to the crazy hoops a friend of mine had to go through via customer support. I didn’t really understand the purpose of the last chapter - it tied up some loose ends, but it felt odd. Overall this was an enjoyable quick read that held my attention. I will note that other reviewers said that Naomi’s name was Nala in their versions - the name has been updated in the version I downloaded - so thanks for that update.
Another brilliant read from Miranda Rijks which does not disappoint. Fast paced, thrilling and kept me guessing! When Nala's four year old daughter Florrie goes missing, everyone becomes a suspect. I was kept guessing throughout and I still didn't manage to see the twists before they were unveiled. Highly recommend.
What a brilliant book, I finished this one within a day. Miranda Rijks is fast becoming one of my favourite authors. Her books are fast paced, they quickly capture the readers interest and there’s a whole load of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged. I also love an abduction thriller so this was right up my street.
Nala is unable to pick her daughter Florrie up and take her to the dentist so she calls on her friend Jane to help. Running late Jane turns up at the school to find Florrie has already been picked up by someone else claiming to be Jane.
Soon the race is on to find out who has taken Florrie but soon it becomes clear that there are no obvious leads. As the book goes on a whole load of secrets are revealed, truths and lies are discovered, family relationships are put to the tests and I found this really helped me engage with the book.
At times I did find it a little bit predictable but this didn’t take away from my enjoyment of this book. I also liked the way this book had short chapters told from Janes, Nalas and Carmens point of view, all 3 of whom are good friends and every chapter was left on a cliff hanger making the reader want to know more. A very good addictive and cleverly written book.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for an advance copy of this book in exchange for this review.
What a book! It has a few twists and turns in the storyline however it will still leave you guessing until the end. Very enjoyable read
