The first book in an engaging new cozy mystery series! I absolutely loved the world that has been created here. Days after finishing this, I was still thinking about Oceanside, California. The characters are believable, if a little quick to jump to conclusions about who committed the crimes. However, I was completely surprised at who the murderer was and thought the red herrings were clever. I look forward to more instalments in this series!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book.
Such a fun read! Thank you #netgalley for the advanced copy of #murderbytheseashore. I was immediately pulled into Scarlett's world and her adorable bookstore, Palm Trees and Page Turners, in sunny southern California. The characters were interesting and I enjoyed getting to know more about each and every one of them. The premise of the book was intriguing and the book absolutely delivered, growing in intensity and keeping me guessing until the very end. I look forward to following Scarlett in her future adventures.

The description of Murder by the Seashore lured me to request the book on NetGalley. I was definitely curious to find out why the murder victim would have Scarlett in her will.
The book starts off faster than many cozies, with the dead body appearing by the 2nd of 35 chapters. I'd say it was a nice mystery where I managed to guess some things but not all.
Looking forward to future sequels
Murder by the Seashore by Samara Yew has everything that people have come to expect the quintessential cozy summer read to have; it's set in a small, seaside town, it has a cute bookstore in the midst of all the action, it has quirky characters, and it has a mystery with plenty of suspects.
I particularly enjoyed the geeky movie references, and the cover is lovely.
Yew has crafted a well-written and fast-paced mystery that keeps you turning the pages until the very end.
I am happy to have received an ARC of #MurderbytheSeashore from #NetGalley , and look forward to future books in the series.
A delightful debut cozy about a spunky bookstore owner who discovers the body of the woman who might be her birth mother close to her store. Scarlett Gardner has to prove that she didn't kill the woman as she deals with a suspicious assistant and a greedy ex-boyfriend who wants to cash in on her pending inheritance. A great summer read!
This is a new author and a new series for me, thanks to #NetGalley for a chance to check it out. I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. It started a little rocky for me as we jump right into action with no background and that usually makes me crazy, especially in a brand new series but the author does a really good job of revealing Scarlet and her story to us. The setting is wonderful, the beach and a bookstore, what not to love, a nice set of secondary characters and really multiple mysteries as Scarlet makes some discoveries along with us! When a bookstore customer is murdered Scarlet not only finds the body but it is revealed that they have a connection, one Scarlet never knew about. This is a really solid first in a series, I would definitely recommend it!
Ms. Yew is a new to me author with a talent for cozies. She pens great characters and gives us plenty of options and reasons why they could be the killer making the reader consider each one. I highly recommend as an engrossing read.
I received an ARC gratis from NetGalley and offer my opinion in the same.
Scarlett Gardener’s dream was to open a bookshop in Southern California but it soon becomes a nightmare when she finds a dead body of a customer and becomes the prime suspect. When Scarlett opened the Palm Trees and Page Turners bookshop she thought her boyfriend and partner would be part of the story. He leaves her for a better job and Scarlett finds herself struggling to keep her business a float. Then she finds a dead body underneath the pier by her bookstore the dead body of a book buying customer. After giving her story to the police she thinks things will go back to normal until a lawyer representing the dead Lorelei Knight tells Scarlett she stands to inherit a fortune. Business start booming for all the wrong reasons curious tourists don’t want books they want a glimpse of the Bookshop killer. This was an extremely interesting story from start to finish finding the real killer set at the beach. I would recommend reading this to everyone.
Murder by the Seashore is the first book in a new cozy series, California Bookshop Mystery. Scarlett Gardner, is the owner of a book store, on the beach. It's her dream come true, but when she finds a dead body under the pier a bottle of poison is found behind her book store, and she's the prime suspect, her dream could come crashing down. This was a great read, especially when the person I thought was the killer, turned out to be innocent.
Love this story. Had great and fun and free spirited characters. This was a great read and I couldn’t put the book down. I would highly recommend this to those that love cozy mysteries
This the first time I’ve read this Author and was immediately drawn in to the storylines and characters. I love a good mystery and this one didn’t disappoint. The story was and characters were charming. I enjoyed visiting with this story, characters and place for a few hours as a reader. A great Sunday afternoon read.
Thank you to the Author, Publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an ARC.
Murder by the Seashore is a cozy mystery by Samara Yew. This is the first book I have read by her.
The story starts out with Scarlett Gardner – she runs a bookshop near the beach in California going for a walk on the beach. She finds a body and the woman was a customer at her shop the day before.
You can imagine the shock Scarlett got when she finds out she is named in the woman’s will! She only knew her as a customer in the bookshop.
I enjoyed the twists and turns this cozy mystery had as I was reading. A good cozy mystery that keeps me guessing is the best kind for me to read.
Thank you NetGalley, Samara Yew and Crooked Lane Books for the ARC of
Murder by the Seashore. This is my personal review.
This is my first time reading a cozy mystery book. I'm not quite sure if this genre isn't for me or the book is just boring. The first chapters (literally from 1 to 15) is so dragging. I feel like there's so much unnecessary scenes or fillers that's not quite relevant to the story. I can say that the pacing of this book is so slow. I cannot connect to the main character, it feels like she's so one dimensional. She doesn't have any unique personality that's why I don't feel intrigued about her life. But the plot is unique, maybe I will enjoy it more if it's well-written.
Thanks to Netgallery and Crooked Lane Books for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
When Scarlett Gardner finds out she has inherited a fortune from an unknown person, she is shocked. Then she finds a dead body, which happens to be the woman who left her the fortune. Can she solve the murder before she is arrested?
A great start to a new series. The characters are very likeable, and the setting is beautiful. I can't wait for the next one.
Scarlett Gardner runs a bookshop near the beach. One morning before opening, she takes a walk on the beach and finds the body of a woman. A woman she recognises as the last customer of the day before.
Unsettling as that is, Scarlett is even more shocked to find that she’s named in the will of the woman. She did not even know the woman! Most unsettling is when she is detained by the police in a holding cell because the murder weapon was found near her shop. (note: near her shop, in a public area, where anyone could have access.)
Scarlett decides, with some encouragement from her sister, and some help of her friend and roommate Lucia, that she will investigate the death of the woman, Lorelai. Pretty soon she has a few suspects lined up.
I liked this story at the start. It’s got a nice narrative voice. But a few cracks showed when Scarlett inherited from a total stranger (Lorelai didn’t even mention in her will her connection with Scarlett). More cracks came when Lorelai’s lawyer showed up unannounced with Lorelai’s possessions at Scarlett’s house. Didn’t Lorelai own a house that was also part of the inheritance? And considering the will is contested, shouldn’t there have been a ban on redistributing the possessions until the contesting of the will has been resolved?
The reveal of the murderer was down right ridiculous. And mainly due to the fact Scarlett picked her suspects on how much they disliked her, rather than their relationship with Lorelai.
In any case, good enough read to continue with the next in the series. Scarlett and Lucia are great characters and they share a great friendship.
Murder by the Seashore by Samara Yew is part of her A California Bookshop Mystery series. Family relations! Inheritences! These are connected to murder in this book. Amateur sleuth and owner of Palm Trees and Page Turners bookshop, Scarlett Gardner gets involved in the murder investigation when she becomes a suspect in the murder of Lorelei Knight. There's plenty of action and suspense. Scarlett faces many challenges and her lawyer roommate Lucia arrives in the nick of time to keep Scarlett out of jail. I really like the characters in this book. This was a fun read.
I love cozy mysteries! They are the genre that got me back into reading years ago. That said, this one sadly was not for me.
The main character, Scarlett, came across to me as a bit scattered and even a little timid. I had a hard time connecting with her or really caring about her. It was also a little odd how quickly a friend would become a suspect without any real solid reasoning behind it and then they would be crossed off her list and back to being a trusted friend again. It just seemed a little thin and superficial. This happened a couple times and kind of put me off the story. I’m also hoping the next book will have the characters be a little more engaging and likable as some seemed very one dimensional.
The setting was nice though and I’ll never get tired of a cozy mystery that has to do with a bookshop!
As someone that has been to Oceanside, it's less of the sleepy beach town described in this book, and more of a suburb equidistant between downtown San Diego and the busier parts of Orange County. Do locals really call it O'side? I guess I can text my friend that lives there, but this is pretty cringe...
You know what else is cringe? This whole book. The cozy tropes abound. The main character owns a bookstore. She finds a dead body. She becomes the main suspect. She begins investigating on her own. She "solves" the murder. Everything is unbelievable. One minute someone is a friend. The next minute they are suspect. Then they are friends again.
You lost me at maki roll. This is as bad as people saying chai tea.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher.
Scarlett Gardner, owner of the Palm Trees and Page Turners bookshop, is struggling to keep the store open after her boyfriend/business partner left for a better job. When she discovers the body of a woman as she's walking on the beach, she recognizes her as a customer from the day before.
Questions arise when Scarlett is informed she is the sole recipient of the dead woman's fortune. Unfortunately, Scarlett has no idea who the woman is and why she is the heir. With the help of her lawyer friend and roommate Lucia and employee Evelyn, wife of the detective in charge of the investigation, she
sets out to discover as much as she can about the dead woman and hopefully catch the killer.
Enjoyable cast of characters, looking forward to the next book.
