Wow, this was a challenging book to read.
A young woman, struggling from years of sexual abuse, takes a job at a center that advocates for mistreated animals. With the love from an adopted cat, and the friendships that she develops with the workers at the facility, Amber begins to feel that she may finally be able to put the past firmly behind her…
I liked the nostalgia from this one. Set in the 80’s, there were many references to pop culture from that decade. Brought back some fond memories of my childhood.
*I received a digital copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.*

I finished it....sorta. I skipped a lot of pages. I didn't really enjoy this book. the descriptions of some of the animal abuse was too rough for me. The feelings were not well conveyed. I didn't think parts of the story were accurate like the response she received from sharing in al anon. At times I didn't think the characters were well developed and it was unclear who they were in the main characters life. I like the premise of finding yourself and of coming to terms with your past and creating a new life, however....it just didn't work for me personally.

I love animals, and this book shows their value to all of us if we let them and ope our hearts to them. Well-wrtten and emotional.

Incredible story of human and animal relationships that somehow intertwined in terms of what's happening around them. The hardships, abuse and challenges they have to face and seeking refuge from each other. A touching story and beautifully written.

But I Already Said Goodbye
by Wendy Thacher Jensen
This was a difficult book to review. There were ugly, sad parts. But, there were parts and animals to save Amber and help her heal from abuse. Tom was the shining light as well as the one-eyed savior.

This book tells a difficult story in a way that is believable and healing. The synopsis caused me to believe that Amber was in a relationship of imbalanced power with an older man. However, it is not a consensual relationship and is far worse than I imagined. Without giving the plot away, I have never read a book that puts words to the experience Amber is having with such realism. Her growth alongside people who spend their lives caring for and protecting animals, causes her to learn gradually how to set boundaries and care for herself. Difficult story to read, but one that needed to be written and available. A tender cat rescue, beautiful New Mexico scenery, and caring friends for Amber bring much-needed space and light to the story. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. #ButIAlreadySaidGoodbye #NetGalley
