For Maggie it was just another night in the ER at St. Vincent hospital until she saw the dead body of her husband will get rolled in. At first she is in shock. It doesn’t help when she’s allowed to go back to her home and her mother-in-law Merrill is there with their stomach howdy attitude she’s already plan the funeral and even dressed as well the way she wants Maggie‘s mom is deceased and although she tries to get in touch with the only dad she’s ever known George he is elusive and she cannot find him. This is why would she runs into a friendly face at the funeral and daisy da Costa she doesn’t know her that well but she is friendly in that is something Maggie needed at the moment. She was a high politician in London but also was a good friend of Will and Eric‘s in school. after the funeral she decides to go to Croatia to close down their summer home and just be by her self with the thoughts of her beloved. She is picked up by their local caretaker bronco and taken to the island she knows or at least she thought she would be the only one there but learns dragon and his son Lucas also staying on the island because he is the caretaker. Before it’s over however she will learn dragon is the least of her worries and she will find out things that will change how she look at her husband will and why six years ago he decided to leave his medical practice. Not only that she isn’t done losing those she loves but she will also gain a nuisance a family before it’s over. this book is so good there is so much I couldn’t put in the summary only because there’s lots of things happening an OMG if this isn’t a great book! I have never read a book by this author before but I will definitely be looking for them in the future he is very talented and writes thrillers with no eye rolling moments and lots of scenes that have you holding your breath waiting for it to be over he seems to be very good at that because more than once I thought Maggie was done with and I was sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens this is such a great book it’s international and goes from London to Croatia and beyond what a great read a total summer blockbuster a definite five star read a dare I say it my favorite thriller book this summer! I received this book from NetGalley and Raven press books but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
Thanks to Robert Bryndza, Raven Street Publishing, and NetGalley for access to the Advanced Reader Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a well written, fast-paced book. It’s the kind of book that will keep you up all night because you can’t put it down. The main character is engaging and I appreciate that she makes the difficult but realistic choices she does at the end and we get a satisfying conclusion,
I’d like to thank Raven Street Publishing and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Fear The Silence’ written by Robert Bryndza in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Maggie Kendall is a senior doctor working a night shift at St Thomas’s Hospital London when her property designer husband Will is rushed in with a gunshot wound to his head. Maggie’s told its suicide but after being married for many years she knows Will and believes he would never take his own life as he had so much he was looking forward to. But maybe Maggie didn’t know him as well as she thought as when she flies out to their holiday home on an island off Croatia a letter is waiting for her that was written by Will six years ago in which he leaves clues about a matter that was of great concern to him. Maggie’s unable to leave the island while storms are raging but her own life is at risk as well as those of her friends as she doesn’t know who she can trust.
If I was to describe this novel as simply exciting it would be an understatement as ‘Fear The Silence’ as it’s so brilliantly addictive I couldn’t put it down and kept turning the pages until I’d reached the end. It’s a standalone psychological thriller that’s been skilfully written by Robert Bryndza, the master of thrillers who unable to write a novel that isn’t superb. From page one the plot is spellbinding and action-packed with an abundance of drama, tension, twists and turns, political corruption and perfectly described characters who always seem to be one step ahead. There are shocks and surprises on every page but just as I think the story has come to an end we’re treated to a final twist with a conclusion so brilliant that I couldn’t help cheering. This is a fantastic thriller that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading and can wholeheartedly recommend.
It’s been awhile since Brynzda has released a standalone novel, and it was worth the wait. Maggie had everything going for her - loved her job, husband, life. Until it all changed in one day, too many secrets. She is a strong character, maybe a bit naive in that she trusted people and took things at face value. But she makes it through a crazy ordeal and we get to learn medical jargon. A lot of research went into this book from the medical terms, the island in Croatia, and the geography during her adventure. This book is a wonderful puzzle with clues throughout and it flows quickly that I finished in two days. I got to enjoy an early copy, the author has a been a favorite for years, and I always write my reviews honestly and voluntarily.
I absolutely loved "Fear the Silence."
From the moment I picked it up I felt like I wanted to both inhale the book and also slow down so I didn't finish it too quickly.
I finished it in two days which is saying something with two small children plus work!
To be honest, Robert Bryndza could write terms and conditions and I would still be first in line to read them 😅
Thank you to Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book.
FIrst, thanks to NetGalley for sending me a digital version of this book. I have to say, though, that I was disappointed in it overall. It started out promising with an intriguing mystery, but the main character was so inept, particularly for someone so intelligent. She escapes danger, not through her own ingenuity, but because of her ineptitude. Others are killed or injured because of her stupidity. She is not the kind of female lead I prefer. I grew up on Nancy Drew. I like my female characters to be ingenious, not ingenuos.
The other thing I began to notice as I read further is that the author's favorite description of pretty much every place the main character goes it "filthy" or "dirty." Huh? Why? Overall, I felt the writing was pedestrian, the story itself was mildly interesting, but the main character was maddening. It's not often that I dislike a character from the beginning. She was okay for maybe the first chapter or two--she has lost her husband after all, so she got sympathy points for that, but as the story progressed and she bumbled her way through, I disliked her more and more.
I guess the plot was good enough to keep me going, and I didn't truly hate her until near the end or I would have simply stopped reading. I will not be looking for other books by this author.
I loved the setting and descriptions of Croatia. This was an interesting stand alone book although not one of the author's best works. Worth an easy read and it had plenty of twists and turns. Thanks to for ARC from NetGalley
Finally...I was in a slump reading wise but this book pulled me out. I could not put it down and read in a day. Exciting, non stop action and intrigue. Maggie is told her husband of twenty four years committed suicide but she can't believe that could be possible. When she sets out to put his affairs in order by going to their summer retreat in a small island, a letter arrives that sets into motion mayhem. Thoroughly enjoyed the writing.
Thanks Netgalley for the ARC and introducing me to a new favorite author. Wish I could give 10 stars.
When you pick up a Robert Bryndza book you know you are in for a treat. This stand alone novel deserves 5 stars. I could not stop reading once I started. A well written thriller that is a step away from his usual police procedurals. I enjoyed this book as well as Robert's writing style. I would recommend this book to all who enjoyed his previous books as well as to readers who are discovering him for the first time
Fear the Silence had me going through lots of emotions…sadness, nervous, annoyance, and finally peace. I felt like I was on the edge of my seat and yelling “don’t do that” at the characters the entire time! At one point I felt utterly hopeless for a good ending but at the last minute, I love how it turned out. I was utterly confused for a while with the whole situation which I love when I can’t figure out what is going on. Thank you NetGalley for the ARC, I am definitely recommending this to friends!
Loved this book, has everything I look for in a book. Strong professional female character, intrigue and fast-paced thrilling story, bit of romance and emotional connection with other characters, and not too much in-depth descriptions which I often get bored of in other books.
I have been wanting to read Robert Bryndza novels for some time, after a recommendation, and was certainly not disappointed. I will now willingly pay for his other books.
This thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat as Maggie tries to deal with her grief over her husband's death and with closing their vacation home for the winter. But unexplained things start happening to Maggie, she is left questioning who she can trust and how well she actually knew her husband. There are some twists along the way, especially toward the end. You won't want to be reading this in the dark of the night.
Oh. My. Gosh.
What a roller coaster ride of a book.
It really takes you along for the thrill. It made my heart pound, especially those scenes in the island house. And the diving scenes too, blimey. This book had everything, corruption, blackmail, and some tender moments too.
I raced through it, and I bloody loved it.
Robert Bryndza is one of my favourites and he definitely delivers with this one.
Many thanks for the early copy in which I give my honest opinion.
Maggie is working in a London hospital when a male gunshot victim is brought in unfortunately it’s Maggie’s husband Will.
The police believe Will has committed suicide but Maggie doesn’t believe this .
The story that unfolds leaves Maggie trusting no one and questioning her marriage to Will.
The thriller is fast paced with plenty of twists and turns.
A different read from Robert Bryndza , highly recommended!
Thanks to NetGalley and Raven Street Publishing.
Great book - first time reading this author. Definitely a new favorite. Well written, easy to read and hard to put down. The plot, the characters and the setting were so well written - I felt I was watching a movie!!
When Maggie left her home on a Sunday for another shift at A&E she was in a really good place after spending most of the day with her husband but a few hours later not only was her husband dead but her whole world was turned upside down which takes her off on a journey where danger seems to be her constant companion.
A really good standalone book from Robert Bryndza where you try and guess what is happening and why. The more you read the deeper you become involved in the plot. Highly recommend.
Maggie, who is a trauma surgeon in a busy London A&E, leaves her husband Will at home one evening and sets off for her shift at work. When her husband is brought into Maggie's A&E department with a gunshot wound to the head, her nightmare begins.
Maggie struggles to believe that her husband has ended his own life, as there were no warning signs. He had quit a career in medicine to become a property developer some years earlier, and had appeared to be fulfilling all his ambitions in life.
When Maggie heads to the remote Croatian island on which Will had built a holiday home, things take a sinister twist.. A letter from her late husband is hand delivered to Maggie, appearing to set out a clue as to her next move. Each step Maggie takes is fraught with danger from this point, and the isolated, out-of-season island setting provides the perfect backdrop to the series of freak incidents and half-glimpsed intruders that follows. It's clear that someone or something is controlling events, and Maggie must work out the secrets hinted at in the cryptic letter left by her husband.
This standalone thriller is full of twists and turns, and has an escapist feel due to the island setting. The Robert Bryndza books I've read previously have been part of a series, and it's to the author's credit that there are so many immediately interesting and sympathetic characters in this book; the tension builds up as tragedies befall people connected to Maggie and I found myself wanting to turn the pages to make sure that certain characters would be okay.
The police said that Maggie's husband killed himself but Maggie kept saying that he was not suicidal. Maggie travels to their holiday island of Tisina, Croatia and finds a disturbing letter written by Will, containing a dark secret. This psychological thriller left me on the edge. It is a fast-paced read, well-written and broadly atmospheric. It hooked me from the beginning to the satisfying ending. I loved reading about an island of Croatia as I have traveled to Croatia to find my relatives. There are about a thousand islands off of Croatia and we stayed on Pag and Hvar Island and had a wonderful time. I am now looking forward to the next Bryndza novel. If you love reading about Croatian islands then you would love this book.
Taking a break from two of my favorite series, this is a stand alone thriller with a doctor who has recently lost her husband as the main character. The story stays just to the right side of the line of plausible and unrealistic and the action kept me on the edge of my seat as Maggie tries to figure out what happened to her husband. Several times throughout the book I was surprised by the direction the story took. Even though this was a stand alone, main characters were really well developed. I loved how the reader was able to see Maggie's thought process. This brought me farther in to the story. While I love Bryndza's series characters, Erika Foster and Kate Marshall, I am all in on more stand alones if they are as good as this one!
Maggie is a doctor working in A&E at Guys Hospital one night, when her husband, Will, is brought in with a gunshot wound. The team can’t save him and his death certificate states suicide.
Needing to collect some of Will’s family heirlooms from their holiday home in Tisina, Croatia, she heads off for a week’s break too.
With break-ins and strange things happening, Maggie wonders who she can trust and just what is going on. Was Will’s death really a suicide? Maggie’s world is very much shaken.
This is a stand-alone by the author and also the first book of his that I’ve read. It certainly won’t be my last read of his either!
The chapters are short and to the point and pack quite a punch. My heart went out to Maggie and she managed to keep a level head most of the time.
This psychological thriller left me having to keep putting my kindle down and having a breather, it was dark and extremely tense.
My thanks to NetGalley and Raven Street Publishing for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
