I couldn’t put this book down. Robert Bryndza is a master storyteller and had me spellbound with this story of Maggie, a doctor whose life is shattered when her husband commits suicide. It then turns out that this is merely the start of her problems, as her husband leaves his awful secrets behind for her to deal with. Much of the action takes place on a tiny, picturesque Croatian island, where Maggie has a luxurious cliffside holiday home. I was terrified half the time while reading this, at times totally claustrophobic, at others, hardly able to breathe because of the nightmarish scenes. Fear the Silence is a crazy, action-packed, gripping story, complete with a larger than life cast of characters. Some, like Maggie’s step father, are absolutely wonderful while others, like her posh mother-in-law, I could happily have strangled. A great read for lovers of crime thrillers.
Fear the Silence is one of my top reads of June 2023. This book is brilliantly written (umm...hello, it's Robert Bryndza) with sharp twists and turns that had me on the edge of my seat. In contrast to the idyllic life of Maggie & Will, the building uneasiness is akin to a brewing volcano kicks off with a trauma code of M10 (gunshot wound and stabbing) and another victim who suffered a gunshot wound. The difference is that the second victim is Will, who Maggie kissed goodbye a few hours ago. When the investigation reveals that Will took his own life, Maggie's life is turned upside down. Determined to get to the bottom of this, Maggie visits Tisina, a refuge of her and Will's holiday home. However, instead of peace, Maggie is confronted with suspicion, being watched, and puzzle pieces sent by Will. The layers of dread and the growing paranoia are written so well, and the comparison to the brewing storm made this read thoroughly engaging. Maggie is a survivor, grounded by principle and an oath to do right by people. I was rooting for her throughout the book. The supporting characters are a great mix of being supportive of the protagonist and being guarded by secrets and hidden motives. The last few chapters are utterly spell-binding when the puzzle pieces align, delivering an intense and well-deserved ending.
Do not skip this read if you're looking for a psychological thriller full of twists and turns. If you wish to read Robert Bryndza, start with this brilliant stand-alone book. Thank you, NetGalley & Raven Street Publishing, for this e-ARC. This honest review is left voluntarily.
The writer has woven a marvelous tale of mystery. When Maggie’s husband Will dies, it opens the door of mystery and danger. The various settings, as Maggie investigates add to the level of danger. The characters are interesting and alluring. As Maggie fights to get her freedom the author provides surprises for the reader.
Fear The Silence by Robert Bryndza is a brilliant, twisty, page-turner of a thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.
The main character Maggie is compelling and her situation following the death of her husband is heart-wrenchingly real. She seems to have nine lives as she progresses from one disaster to another in her efforts to get to the truth of the secrets her husband left behind.
This thriller never lets up from start to finish, and cements Bryndza's rightful spot as one of the best thriller writers of his generation
I consider myself fortunate to have received an ARC of #FearTheSilence from #NetGalley.
Maggie, an a&e doctor, sees her husband brought in on a stretcher with a gun shot wound, fighting for his life. As much as her colleagues try to save Will's life, unfortunately he dies. She has all these questions going around in her head because she can't understand what happened after she left him smiling and waving from their window as she walked to work, to make him take his own life. After the funeral, she goes to their holiday home on a Croatian island for a break. This is when she receives a letter from Will. It has a cryptic message inside that she has to decifer, knowing how much Will loved his spy novels. This sends her on a tense and dangerous journey to discover what has been happening to Will.

I love a good mystery and this book fits that bill. The plot was suspensful and had a several twists and turns. I also enjoyed the various locations that the book took place. This would be a great title to add to a public library collection.
I`m a huge fan of Robert Bryndza so was looking forward to reading his new one.
Maggie is a Dr in A&E when her husband Will is brought in with a gunshot wound and dies in front of her, the police said it points to suicide but Maggie does not believe them.
After the funeral Will`s family turn away from her so she goes to their holiday home on a Croatian island where she receives a letter from Will posted from a solicitor after his death, then the secrets he had unfold and everything starts to go wrong for her, this is when the plot just seemed to go downhill for me as so unbelievable. Though it did have plenty of twists and turns.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC
This authors first stand-alone novel is a cracking thriller that grabs you from the start and holds on to the end! Well written with a brilliant plot this is a real edge of the seat read told from Maggie’s POV throughout. Set mainly on Tišina a tiny Croatian island, the descriptions of the island are breathtaking, in a good and bad way; the portrait of the island in winter is spine chilling!
Briefly, Maggie Kendall is a senior doctor working in A and E at Guys Hospital. One night on a busy shift a shooting victim is wheeled in. It is her husband Will and she is unable to save him. His death is recorded as suicide. Grief stricken Maggie decides to visit their holiday home on a Croatian island. Immediately she arrives she finds a strange letter from Will. Following the directions on the letter she finds herself caught up in a web of deceit. Weird things start happening to her and her friends and she finds herself simply struggling to stay alive.
This was a very tense read, Maggie is so alone on the island but it’s clear someone is watching her and the fear was palpable. A very good physiological thriller which keeps you guessing all the way through, fast paced, unpredictable and very scary. A great read.
This is a great psychological thriller that certainly keeps you guessing.
Maggie and Will are very happily married so it’s a huge shock when at work at the hospital, Maggie sees Will brought in to theatre, fighting for his life.
Unfortunately he doesn’t make it and the Police tell Maggie that it was suicide. She can’t believe it as they were so happy together and she didn’t even know he owned a gun.
Things need to be sorted out so Maggie heads to their holiday home in Croatia to go through Will’s things. Whilst there she receives a letter from Will, sent via a solicitor.
Maggie follows the clues that he’s left and soon realises his death was not suicide.
There’s some dangerous people who want something that Maggie has and soon lives are in danger.
This is a gripping thriller and one that I really enjoyed.
Thanks to Raven Street Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
I loved the fast pace of this book, and the short chapters kept me reading "just one more." Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!!
Maggie an ER doctor is shocked when her own husband Will arrives at her hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Maggie is utterly devastated and confused since there were no signs her husband was struggling mentally. Maggie decides to take a weekend away to the island home Will had been remodeling for them. However, a letter from Will arrives for Maggie once she is on island and it changes everything! This book was not what I expected- but in a good way!
This was a very interesting story and the setting was really cool. The setting was definitely its own character. Some of the pacing dragged, which had me putting the book down more often than a thriller I can't stop reading. But I would still recommend this book and definitely this author.
When Maggie goes off to her shift in the A & E, the last person she expects to see on a gurney is her husband, Will. But police are saying he committed suicide. With a gun. But whose gun? And why on earth would he kill himself?
Maggie has more questions than answers. Her in-laws are overly aggressive and seem to have much more of a handle on things than Maggie does. So off she goes to the house her husband has left her. A lovely holiday home on an island in Croatia.
But as soon as she arrives she receives a letter from Will. Giving her clues to find information. But how? And as if that wasn’t enough, the house seems to hate her and may be trying to kill her!
As she gets closer to unlocking the secrets Will had, Maggie finds herself in danger.
I am a big fan of this author. I was not a fan of this book. Maggie was such a weak character it was difficult to care at all about her. At times she just felt clueless and not involved.

Our main character is Maggie. She has been married to Will for twenty-four years. They have no children. He has a generous and mean mother-in-law, Marelle. Maggie is forty-seven years old. She is a surgeon and works at St. Thomas Hospital in the emergency department.
Thanks to this heroine, I participated in an emergency thoracotomy for the first time. It was a great experience for me. I was very nervous. I hoped the young man would survive. Did it happen? The next patient was her husband. He arrived in a very bad condition. Unfortunately, he did not survive. I was devastated along with the heroine. I could not believe it. In the morning he waved at her whole and alive. And now he's dead on the table. Unimaginable pain. Who brought him to this state?
Will was a forensic pathologist. However, he gave up his profession and began to do what he wanted all his life. Why did he give up his learned profession?
Our widow flew to Croatia to her summer house. What will happen to her there? Will she recover from the loss of her husband? Will she discover the truth behind his sudden suicide?
Wow, what an engaging crime thriller this was. At first, I thought it was going to be a medical thriller, but I was wrong. A great story that could really happen. Here I found the struggle for survival, hunting, corruption and lots of intrigue. I was very scared in places. Tears sprang to my eyes by themselves. I was very worried about Maggie. Her life hung in the balance. Who wanted her to disappear from the face of the earth?
I really enjoyed the fast-paced action and its great twists. Bomb ending. I was so blown away by this book that it earned my top spot on June 5th.
It was my first encounter with Robert Bryndza's work, and I already know that it won't be the last. I must check out other novels by this author.
If you are looking for a strong crime thriller, then go ahead and reach for the book "Fear the silence".
I wholeheartedly recommend it.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
I was initially intrigued by this book, given its numerous 5-star reviews. However, I must admit that it fell a bit short of my expectations. The story revolves around Maggie, a doctor whose husband tragically takes his own life. Seeking solace, she retreats to her holiday home, but doubts begin to emerge—was his death really a suicide, or was there more to it? As she receives a letter from Will, implying hidden secrets surrounding his death, Maggie embarks on a quest to uncover the truth.
While the storyline held promise, I found some of Maggie's actions to be rather perplexing. Moreover, I struggled to believe that she could have undertaken extensive travel in the injured state the book portrayed. These inconsistencies left me feeling somewhat disconnected from the narrative, ultimately impacting my overall experience. Consequently, I would rate this book a 3.5 out of 5.
This stand alone book starts with the apparent suicide of Will Kendall who was Maggie’s husband. She is a trauma surgeon and Will was a property developer.
Odd things happen and Maggie travels to their house on a small island in Croatia. Following some 'clues' left by Will even more mysterious things happen, including the death and sinking of the boat belonging to Will's friend Eric. Enough of the spoilers, as this is an exciting, well written suspense story with an excellent ending.
Obviously Mr Bryndza has a love and intimate knowledge of Croatian life - what a joy to research this!?
Thanks to Net Galley and Raven Street Publishing for the chance to read and review.
Tension and mystery from the very first page! Great setup for characters and plot points. Quick and satisfying read.
Thanks to NetGalley and Raven Street Publishing for the ARC to read and review.
Thanks so much to NetGalley and Raven Street Publishing for this ARC in return for an honest review.
One tough thing about reviewing a top notch, couldn't-stop-reading thriller like "Fear The Silence"......I don't want to run the risk of dealing too much in plot details, or else spoil the non-stop detonation of twists, surprises, nerve-wracking reversals-of-fortune and overall suspense.
Oh yes, this is one of those humdingers that makers you put off bedtime cause you just gotta know what happens next to the distressed damsel at the story's center.
Maggie's one of those heroines living a perfect satisfied life as a doctor, happily married to Will, a former pathologist turned successful architect-house designer. Happily that is, until Will's shocking death, according to police investigators, came not from a burglar but from Will's own hand.
The confounded, grief stricken Maggie travels to the sumptuous vacation home Will built for them on a remote Croatian island. Collecting his belongings at the house, Maggie comes across baffling, disturbing information that Will left for her to find.......evidence that connects him to..........well, here's where I need to firmly keep my mouth shut about anything further that Maggie, discovers and the harrowing calamities befall her.
But since we already know author Robert Bryndza specializes in race-through-the-pages thrillers, you can already surmise that Maggie's put herself in the crosshairs of a powerful, ruthlessly vile villain........and her life's transformed into a rollercoaster of near fatal encounters and breathless escapes.
"Fear The Silence" hit all the right notes for me......a tear-along pace, an innocent lead character put through one dangerous situation after another and a fine double-whammy of a wrap-up......so that's a 5 star read for me, making my recommendation to suspense-thriller fans very easy... ......do not pass this one up.
“Three can keep a secret…..if two of them are dead”.
This book! Wow! I loved it from the very beginning. This is the first book I’ve read by Robert Byrnzda and it won’t be the last! This book was fast paced, gripping and I couldn’t read it fast enough!! The secrets and twists that poor Maggie went though kept me devouring this book. Read this book…you won’t be disappointed!
Thank you Netgalley for allowing me an Arc! Much appreciation!
Thank you NetGalley and Raven Street Publishing for the chance to read and offer my thoughts on Fear the Silence.
Robert Bryndza has done it again, but this time he has produced a stand-out of a stand-alone book. I couldn’t speak more highly of the strong-willed Dr. Maggie Kendall he has created as the lead in this book. Like Det. Erika Foster and Inv. Kate Marshall, Maggie is a tough nut. Some of the situations and violence that rain down on her after the death of her husband made me wonder how anyone could survive. Survive she did!
This was a masterwork of a crime drama with a bit of political corruption thrown in, alongside some troubled family relationships. All ingredients for a tasty afternoon’s reading.
I’ve loved all Robert’s work, but I must say I liked this better than any of the other books. Here’s hoping for more like Maggie!
