A page turner! Loved this one - a woman unexpectedly loses her husband to suicide
- or is that the truth? She sets off for Croatia and their house on a mostly deserted island this time of year - all of a sudden she hears things, her house is broken into and she is being hunted!! You will live the suspense in this one!
Maggie Kendall, a trauma surgeon, is shocked and finds her life drastically changed when her husband Will is brought into the ER and dies from a gunshot wound. The police determined Will committed suicide. Maggie goes to their holiday home in Croatia to get away for awhile and to bring a few items of Will’s back home that his parents had asked for. While there, she receives a mysterious letter from her husband. How can that be? The letter leads her on a scavenger hunt for additional clues. Strange things also seem to be occurring at her home and she soon fears for her life, yet the island is remote and almost no other residents are there at this time of year. She has an alarm system and cameras and should be safe. But as things escalate, Maggie doesn’t know who she can trust.
This is a fast-paced thriller with murder, lies, secrets, deception, intrigue, a surprise, and more!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thanks to Netgalley Robert Bryndza and raven books for this advanced review copy.
Now I love the Authors Erika Foster and Kate Marshall series, all have 5 stars.
As a stand-alone story I couldn’t wait to get into his style of gripping, suspenseful story telling, but I did not feel that this was anywhere near as good as his other books. That being said, it is still a good story to read. I didn’t devour it as I do his other books, so maybe the problem is me and not the story.
But give it a read it is worthwhile.
This is a suspense filled story focussing on Maggie, a doctor, who finds out that her husband, Will, has been shot dead in her home. She's told by the police that Will killed himself, but Maggie can't believe that he would ever do that. We follow Maggie on her journey to their holiday home in Croatia to escape the sad memories of home, where she hears from Will's solicitor that he has left a letter for her and this unearths some puzzling questions.
I love this author's books and will always push a new one to the top of the list! This is a slow burner initially, with Maggie in shock with what she has been told, but the story builds up in suspense and tension once she reaches her home in Croatia. The author has done a fabulous job of giving me the creeps at every turn of the page and you can't help worrying for Maggie being out there alone. It's a very dark storyline, and I just couldn't work out who I (or Maggie!) was supposed to trust.
This book certainly kept me on the edge of my seat with lots of twists and turns and there was a thrilling atmosphere throughout to keep me turning the pages to the end. This was a very enjoyable read, which took me on a journey I wasn't expecting! High action, exciting and gripping - would definitely recommend!
First time I have read a book by this author and I was swayed by the numerous 5 star reviews - I had extremely high expectations but for me personally this book started with promise and failed to deliver - it was too descriptive and after a few chapters the main character goes into overdrive explaining every single detail of what she was doing.
FEAR THE SILENCE is a standalone novel by Robert Bryndza, who has written a couple of series I’m invested in. Here, Maggie Kendall is a trauma surgeon who works in the ER of the local hospital. While on shift, her husband Will is brought in with a gunshot wound and passes away. The police rule his death a suicide and Maggie goes to their holiday home in Croatia to grieve her loss. While there, she receives a letter that her husband wrote to her years ago. The letter contains clues to a dark secret, and Maggie soon finds that someone will go to any lengths to make sure that it doesn't come to light.
Maggie was a strong character, and this was a dark, twisty story. The reader definitely rooted for Maggie to discover the truth. If had a small complaint, it was that Maggie suddenly developed some skills that seemed out of character; almost like she suddenly became some kind of super spy. Overall, however, it was well written, and a good read.
This standalone book was of the very high standard we’ve come to expect from Robert's books and I quickly found myself invested in the characters.
This is a fast paced and intense story that kept me up late until the night. Quite possibly his best so far
Doctor Maggie Kendall has seen just about everything. But that changes the day her journalist husband, Will, is wheeled into the emergency room with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Shocking. Unthinkable. He was perfectly fine when she’d left the house. How could she have missed the signs? In the grief-filled weeks that follow, strange things begin to happen to Maggie, and unsettling answers emerge. She finds herself plunged into a deadly coverup conspiracy that’s more far-reaching than she could have imagined…the same one that cost Will his life. And the body count doesn’t stop there. It rises further as Maggie struggles to survive long enough to expose the truth. Bryndza writes a taut, complex, intense murder thriller, where everyone is a suspect and trust is a luxury. The unrelenting danger just never lets up, until the oh so satisfying conclusion.
Dr. Maggie Kendall's life is wonderful. She has a loving husband and rewarding career. In an instant, looking down at her husband who has just been brought into the ER, her life changes forever.
Fear the Silence is a twisty, psychological thriller that keeps the reader wondering what next? Action packed and well written, the reader can't put the book down until the explosive end.
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Maggie can't believe her husband is dead. She is in shock. She doesn't think her husband had any secrets that she knew about. This was a good book.
What a gripping, twisting and thrilling roller coaster ride this book is! Happily married for 24 years, Maggie's world is rocked when her husband is found dead from a gunshot wound, and she is devastated when his death is ruled a suicide. She refuses to believe this. When she travels to their second home in Croatia to close the house at the end of the season, she finds a note from her deceased husband, Will, written years earlier. This compels her to embark on an investigation of her own into his death, and she soon finds herself, and those around her in great peril. Robert Bryndza has written a fast-paced book that is hard to put down! It is extremely well written, with an intricate plot, and memorable, though not always likeable characters. I thoroughly enjoyed it! Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for my advance copy of the book. The opinions of this review are my own.
Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for the ARC of this book.
Don’t think I’ve read Robert Bryndza before but will certainly look out for his name in the future.
The book made interesting reading with Maggie trying to recover from the sudden loss of her husband Will. Characters were very well described and most of them were likeable too. Reasonably paced book, some bits perhaps a little bit too fast to totally take in but perhaps that adds to the atmosphere of the story.
Certainly not what I expected but definitely worth reading. Great ending.
A happily married couple, she a hugely committed and successful doctor; he a disillusioned forensic specialist turned property developer. A hardly credible suicide with numerous unanswered questions, followed by complicated trail of murder and mayhem. One hugely vulnerable isolated woman facing unenviable odds in her search for the truth against the weight of corrupt politicians, secrets and lies . Answers that slowly reveal everything she believed in, to be a mockery ; relationships founded on smoking mirrors and deception. A fast paced story that , to be believed requires a suspension of belief in that one fragile person in their late forties could out manoeuvre, hoodwink and traverse across Europe avoiding detection in the search for answers. Not withstanding this inconsequential reservation, what follows is a rip roaring adventure, fraught incidents with numerous fatalities and a tense conclusion delivering poetic justice for a female gutsy protagonist. First book I have read by this author and looking forward to discovering many more. Thanks to Author, publisher and Netgalley for allowing me this ARC.
Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for this ARC.
It all starts out so ordinary. A couple in love and as one goes off to work the other stands in the window to wave goodbye. I knew right away that the author was setting us up for a catastrophe. Was I right or was I wrong? You will have to read the book to find out.
I will say that there was all the feels in this book, happy, sad, terrified, lots of terrified. Will I read another book by this author, absolutely!
Well written book, the story flows well and builds as you get deeper into the book. Lots of twist and turns. The author does a nice job building the different locations in the story. I thought at time's the story had a few too many twist and some of the characters are not well built. The main antagonist comes across shallow and not well built in the book. After finishing the book, I still do not know why the husband sent the letter to the wife when he did. Why he hid all so much from his wife and I felt the ending did not fit the story. It did not follow the story, more of a that's all and leaves me as the reading with many open questions.
Maggie has lost her husband to an apparent suicide. Maggie isn’t convinced and when she receives a letter from him she is determined to find out what happened. There are some powerful people that want to stop her. This is an edge of your seat suspense book that you will have a hard time putting down. You don’t know who to trust and how will Maggie stay alive while searching for answers. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.
Robert Bryndza has done it again with this stand alone book Fear The Silence. Thank You NetGalley for letting me read this gripping 5 Star Read which keeps you on edge right until the end. Looking forward to the next stand alone book

This is my only my third Robert Bryndza story - read "Devil’s Way" Kate Marshall #4 which was great! Also read " Fatal Witness" Erika Foster Crime Thriller #7 which I also liked only it was more disturbing. This isn’t part of either perhaps a new series.
In this story Maggie and Will Kendall have been married for twenty-four years. She’s an A&E doctor at St Thomas’ Hospital and he is a former forensic pathologist, now a property developer.
It is near the end of Maggie’s busy day when a gunshot victim arrives ~ while trying to save him she notice what he is wearing and it is the same thing her husband was wearing when she waved to him and Luna - his stray cat he has been feeding. Yes! The victim turns out to be Maggie’s husband. Her first thought is there must have been a burglary. She assumed Will was shot by someone else. The police hesitate and tell her there are no signs of forced entry and believe he took his own life.
Maggie is consumed with grief however cannot believe Will was suicidal.
After the funeral, Maggie is still suffering and decides to get away a few to and stay at their holiday home on a Croatian island. While there .She finds a disturbing letter written by Will, indicating a dark secret
Being alone in the house without Will has created fears… is someone is after her or is it her imagination?
I feel like such a traitor in not giving this a high rating. To me this wasn’t the great read I was expecting. Doesn’t mean it wasn’t good just not as good as what I expected.
I did love the ‘Author’s Note’ Bryndza tells us when he visited Croatia he knew he would include it in a one of this novels.
(Personal Note; I have never been to Croatia but two of my grandsons are water polo players and had a coach who made arrangements for a summer tournament. They said it was amazing plus they actually practice in the sea.)
Want to thank NetGalley and Raven Street Publishing for this early eGalley.
Publishing Release Date scheduled for July 6, 2023.
As a fan of both Bryndza’s series, I was anxious to read his latest, a stand-alone called Fear the Silence. It starts off with a strong premise. Maggie goes off to her job on the evening shift as an A & E doctor after a lovely day with her husband, Will. But one of the first patients through the doors is Will, brought in with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. The verdict from police and the ME is suicide. But he’d seemed perfectly happy. After the funeral, Maggie goes to their vacation house on a small Croatian island. And that’s where things start to go wrong for both her and the plot. One weirdly dangerous occurrence after another keeps putting her life in danger. It just felt too contrived for me. Nothing about this story felt plausible. Maggie is able to make huge leaps in divining where to find leads. Yet, at the same time, she often appears clueless. There are multiple attempts on her life. Folks show up at just the right moment to help. Maggie even sees her dead mother’s ghost. Bryndza does a great job in creating an eerie setting, but I want my stories to have a bit more realism to them.
I hope Bryndza’s next book is a return to his much more enjoyable police procedural series.
My thanks to Netgalley and Raven Street Publishing for an advance copy of this book.
I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
Brilliant just plain brilliant. Imagine suffering the grief of losing your husband and then having him leave you a Dan Browne style mystery to solve!
