I LOVED THIS BOOK. It had me engrossed from the very first page. In true Frieda fashion, it was unhinged and totally bingeable!
This was one of my favorite Freida books! Per usual, I finished in one setting and I never expected the ending.
I really enjoyed this book! Freida McFadden never disappoints, and always has a twist/twists that have my jaw on the floor! As a nurse, I loved the atmosphere, and could really visualize the hospital floor, rooms and nurses’ station. I loved the suspense! I definitely would, and have, recommended this book!
I loved this book. One of the things I love most about Freida's books is you can count on the accuracy of the content when it involves the medical field. What better setting for a fast paced thriller than an the psychiatric ward!
Thank you to my partner, NetGalley, and the author, for the gifted eARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
1. 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 - As with all Freida books, I flew through this one. My lasting thought: If I’m ever working on night duty in a locked psych ward, I am calling in sick. Every time.
2. 𝗗𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 - We get to delve into Amy’s past with her high school best friend and also see her present life. The past definitely helps to set the scene for what is happening in the present.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
The main character is doing rotations at a psych ward and is incredibly nervous for several reasons.. one being that a former friend who knows her past, that not many others know, is a patient.
“Wars D” is full of twists and turns that make you reconsider every conclusion you think you’ve come to about this book. I’m typically pretty good at seeing certain endings coming but with this book, Frieda McFadden orchestrated and crafted her story lines so perfectly and beautifully. There are so many characters involved in shocking turns that leaves you speechless at the end. Nobody is who you think they are, nothing is as it seems. Not even the main character. I would love to this this book be turned into a movie.
I really enjoyed reading this one! I was hooked from the start and could not stop until I finished! A definite page turner with twists and turns that will keep you reading late into the night regardless of you responsibilities the next day! Love Freida McFadden and every single book I’ve read of hers! Can’t wait for more!
Freida McFadden, Author of Psychological Thrillers and Medical Humor writes 5 star books that are outstanding, unpredictable twist and a jaw-dropping plot. You will never guess the outcome. I've read most of her books.
Ward D
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Author: Freida McFadden
I requested a digital advanced readers copy from NetGalley and Freida McFadden and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased.
My Thoughts: McFadden is one of my FAVORITE thriller writers. I will always buy her books without even reading a blurb, and I also belong to fan Facebook Group. I apologize for being so late on this review, had surgery, then finished my thesis for my Masters Degree, so my reviewing got a little behind. I am slowly getting caught up on all of the books I have read the last few months. In this dark psychological thriller, we follow a med student during her rotation in an overnight psychiatric ward. The psychiatric ward has an eclectic group of patients, each having their own mental illness they are fighting, sub-fused with their personality. Is something sinister unfolding? Will Amy make it through the night?
The story is narrated by our MC, Amy, in her POV. In Amy’s POV, she alternates between the present and eight years ago, giving some backstory on her story and the supporting characters. Amy’s own internal fear ruled her thoughts, behaviors, and decisions that night. Some perceived and some real. Each of the patients, along with the head nurse, and psychiatrist, are explored but the focus is on a handful. The characters were well fleshed out, with mystery, an element of surprise, and creatively portrayed. The author’s writing style was complex, suspenseful, twisty, had complex plot twists, and brilliant. McFadden is just a brilliant storyteller of anything thrilling.
I throughly enjoyed this story. This story has the same elements of the psychological thriller that we have come to expect with numerous twists from McFadden. I was completely drawn into Amy’s story and loved every word. Even though the portrayal of the mental health patients is not typical as to what you would typically see in a real psychiatric ward, this is a work of fiction, a creepy, gripping work of fiction that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I highly recommend picking up today, available on KU and an audiobook has also been released.
Freida is my favorite writer if all time. This wad a great book. I would give it 4 out if 5 stars. I would definitely recommend this to a friend

Thank you to NetGalley, Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op and the author, Freida McFadden for the advanced copy of Ward D.
Freida McFadden has such a following and I can see why! While this is not my first of her books, the overall story was very twisty! I genuinely enjoyed the ending, how you think you know and have your own theory as to what can possibly be happening, but it is the total opposite, a surprise from here to there!
Medical Student, Amy is on her psychiatry rotation and has to stay overnight in the psych ward, Ward D. While there, she notices her childhood friend Jade is a patient. They havent seen each other many years, since an unspeakable act happened. What happened?! And who is the mysterious patient locked in seclusion room one, that every patient says is going to kill everyone tonight?! Why is the attending so calm and handsome? Locked in the psych ward, what could go wrong? Except, everything....
I was not completely loving the body of the book. I felt it dragged on a bit and was feeling a bit lost and like i couldnt find my way back with some repetition. But, overall, the ending was great, when everything is revealed!
I really enjoyed reading this one! From the get-go, I was hooked on the story and could not put it down to see what would happen! Huge page turner that I could not put down until it ended!
I love Freida McFaddens books but this one just didn’t do it for me. The storyline was boring and I guessed the ending. I honestly didn’t even want to finish but I know all of her books usually have jaw dropping endings but this one was lack luster:
Thank you Netgalley and Ms. MacFadden for giving me the opportunity to read Ward D.
I loved this book so much that I finished it in one day. I am now enjoying her other titles.
As you read Ward D you think you have it figured out. Then there is a twist, then another. I kind of had it figured out, but not everything. Ending WOW,WOW, WOW.
I was approved to read this book early. I’ve loved this author and her excellent twists and turns throughout her stories. This one was definitely one of my favorites, it kept me on my toes. I thought I had the plot figured out and to my surprise I was completely wrong. If you like thrillers that keep you guessing, this is the book for you!
Unputdownable!
The minute you think you’ve got it figured out , lands the next twist !
Another Freida book which is a complete page turner !!
It’s a Freida McFadden book so of course it’s absolutely wonderful!!! But no really it’s so good! I definitely wasn’t expecting the twists just when I knew I had it figured out I was all wrong. So good!!
Another winner by Freida McFadden! This book keeps you on your toes in a psych hospital wondering whodunit?? So many possibilities, but is it ever who you suspect? Read to find out! Love this as all of her works are fun and fast-paced as well as interesting. Worst part of finishing is waiting for the next book to get published haha.
Thank you to Freida and NetGalley for the ARC and opportunity to read and review this book!
**POSSIBLE SPOILER**
I am a fan of Freida McFadden's books in general. I think she is the queen of twists and Ward D was no exception. While I thought I had it figured out, it wasn't until right before the twist that I actually had it right. I give this book 4/5 stars only because I thought there were some things that were a little too far-fetched to fit into the relatively believable rest of the story. (**For example- the power going out in the unit for an extended period of time, twice, and no one responding to check it out. This story was set in a psych ward in a regular hospital rather than a standalone psychiatric hospital.**) I say this understanding that this is a fictional story...
However, in typical Freida fashion, she did a great job with the back and forth between the past and present for Amy, the main character, and had a great twist at the end!
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone looking for their next thriller.
Having previously worked in inpatient psychiatric units, I could literally envision myself in Ward D in my mind’s eye while reading this. Kudos to Freida for yet again, painting the clearest picture!! Gripping, suspenseful, and an absolute page-turner!
