Another fantastic five star thriller from Freida McFadden, with excitement and tension building from the first page and with a true McFadden twist that so unexpected and that you never saw coming at the end.....this is definitely one of my new favorites from her all thriller fans will not want to miss this page turning thriller!!!
Much thanks to #netgalley and #freidamcfadden for allowing me to read and review this ARC
All thoughts and opinions are my own
I feel like I say this for every Freida book but THIS IS HER BEST ONE YET! I lovedddd it. Devoured it in one sitting, convinced I finally guessed the plot twist in one of her books but low and behold my mind was blown. Loved the characters, loved the setting, loved all of the patients unique personalities.. Would give 10 stars if I could!
Wow! Keep the lights on whilst you read this one!
Ward D is an exciting, fast passed thriller with many twists and turns. The pacing builds an atmosphere of suspense and you constantly question who to trust.
The foreshadowing was a tad overdone, which led to some predictable moments.
Thank you to Netgalley and the author for allowing me to read this book. Another fantastic book by Freida McFadden!
Mind BLOWN!
That is the only thing I thought of while reading this novel. I loved reading all of the different patients back stories and trying to solve this on my own but of course I could not. In the end I was surprised and shocked. I could not put this book down.
Amy is a medical student and she has a night shift on Ward D but she isnโt just worried about being locked in a psych ward all night, she has a dark past which will come back to haunt her.
Freida McFadden does it again. Don't miss Ward D. I hate using the word unputdownable but this book really is. It is a very easy read and keeps you engaged throughout the entire book. The book takes us back and forth between the present day where Amy, a medical student is doing an overnight rotation in the locked down Psychiatric Unit and 8 years ago while she was in high school with her best friend Jade. Amy is terrified of spending the night in lockdown but she tries to make the best of it. As the night goes on Amy doesn't know who she can trust and who she cannot, especially as she realizes people are going missing throughout the night and nothing is what it seems. Just when you think you got it all and there are no more surprises, Freida throws in another twist in the Epilogue. Run.....don't walk to get this book.

Frieda has been an auto-buy author for me for a long time- so when I saw an opportunity to read her new book before release day I absolutely jumped on it. Like, set an alarm for when it was going live on netgalley, hit refresh about a million times, and sweat through my shirt.
And I am SO GLAD I did! Ward D is another fantastic twisty psychological thriller. If you read and enjoyed Never Lie, this book is a must-read.
A couple med students are on their psych rotations and must complete a 12 hour overnight shift in a โจlockedโจ psych ward at the hospital. Like- locked in a wing with the craziest of looney toonies (no disrespect meant) who are โจnotโจ behind locked doors. Youโve got an old lady who may or may not stab you in the eye with a knitting needle, a guy who thinks he is Spider-Man, another very large man who either wears all his clothes at once or none at all who believes they are all going to be murdered , and an extremely violent man who is in an isolation unit, bound and restrained to a bed. Oh- and he is the guy who is supposedly going to murder everyone. No biggie, because he canโt get outโฆ right?
Also, our MC? She happens to know one of the inpatients. In fact, she may be the reason the girl is there..
Honestly I didnโt know who or what to believe. I stopped trusting my instincts, just as our MC started to doubt her own mind. Is she starting to lose it? Are the inpatients lying to her? The concept of the locked ward was so freaky, and I loved all the bizarre behavior.

This was the most unreliable book Ive ever had the pleasure of reading , yet so satisfying.
In true Freida fashion : your not sure who to trust. You can never be sure what direction the story will take in the ending . But you can gaurentee it will be climactic and more explosive than you've bargained for !
Thank you Netgalley and Victory editing for this early copy in return for my honest opinion.
Medical student Amy is assigned to Ward D, a psychiatric ward overnight. She is already anxious about being in a locked ward, and when she arrives her fears are warranted.
This novel is fast-paced, and the cast of characters add to the most eclectic night in Ward D. Amy has to trust her instincts if she wants to survive the night! As usually McFadden has twist that leave you blindsided!
Thank you Freida McFadden for this advanced copy with Netgalley. Get your copy as soon as May 8 and buckle up for one bumpy, rip-roaring read!!!
I honestly didnโt expect anything less than this but somehow this exceeded my expectations??? Like this might be my new favorite Freida McFadden book??? Holy smokes, first off the setting of this book was amazing, I love a good locked door thriller but in a psych ward like?? Say less, OBSESSED. Then the fact that I was questioning every characters motives the whole time, like I had no idea who to trust. And the characters were SO fun! And the PLOT TWISTS. So freaking good. What an absolute banger from the queen of psychological thrillers!
Medical student Amy Brenner, currently doing a psychiatric rotation, is assigned to Ward D for a night shift. Amy has high anxiety about going to Ward D, a locked psych unit, but why? When strange things start happening and patients start disappearing, Amy doesn't know who to trust. Will she make it out of this shift alive?
This book was fun and fast-paced and I read it in a day. Like all McFadden reads, it was twisty and turny. The main character frequently makes some annoying choices, though after the epilogue this is mostly forgiven. Freida fans will certainly not be disappointed with this one!
True confessions.. I'm a McFan. A full-blown Freida McFadden fanboy; someone who has read all 19 of her published books, including three categorized as "Women's Fiction." If she re-wrote the phone book, I'd read it--and enjoy it.
This makes writing an unbiased review difficult.
I received an ARC (Advance Review Copy) of Freida's latest book, Ward D. After one night of interrupted sleep, and a break for a few hours watching The Masters golf tournament, it was finished.
Not surprisingly, I found it terrific.
All the typical superlatives fit McFadden's books. "Unputdownable." "Page-turner." "Gripping!" "Twists at every turn." Ward D is certainly all of the above.
Here's the marketing blurb:
That's all you're going to get from me on the plot / storyline. Anything else I could say could very well be a spoiler, and no spoilers allowed here!
Medical student Amy Brenner is spending the night on a locked psychiatric ward.
Amy has been dreading her evening working on Ward D, the hospitalโs inpatient mental health unit. There are very specific reasons why she never wanted to do this required overnight rotation. Reasons nobody can ever find out.
And as the hours tick by, Amy grows increasingly convinced something terrible is happening within these tightly secured walls. When patients and staff start to vanish without a trace, it becomes clear that everyone on the unit is in grave danger.
Amyโs worst nightmare was spending the night on Ward D.
And now she might never escape.
Thatโs all youโll get from me about the plot/storyline. Anything else could be a spoiler, and no spoilers allowed here!
Written in a (non-confusing) dual timeline, the story progresses swiftly. I was about 15% into the book when I first thought, "I know how this is going to end." I changed my mind during the read about, I don't know, maybe twenty times? Turns out, I was wrong twenty times.
Typical.
Ward D grabbed my attention from page 1, and held it until literally the last line of the epilogue. (Whatever you do, do not skip the epilogue!)
If you want a highly entertaining read that will keep you guessing and turning pages well into the night, you should read Ward D.
I canโt say itโs the best of Freidaโs books. Thatโs because virtually every time Iโve finished one of her books I used to say, โThatโs the best of Freidaโs books.โ That phrase tends to lose effectiveness after twenty timesโฆ
Now I just say, "Well, she did it again."
And I anxiously await her next work.
Highly recommended!
Release date May 8, 2023. Available on Amazon, and Kindle Unlimited.
Special thanks to Freda McFadden, NetGalley, and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for providing the Advance Reader Copy ofย Ward D. This review is my honest and personal opinion.
Thank you to Freida McFadden and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of WARD D, to be published May 8, 2023. WARD D by Freida McFadden is a phenonenal psychological thriller that will have you wondering what's going to happen next. It's got twists and turns throughout that keep you off guard and wondering who Amy can really trust. You won't regret reading it, but you will regret it if you don't! #NetGalley. #FreidaMcFadden
Let me just start out with this being listed as one of my top 3 favorite Freida books. The story is told in current time and has chapters of reference to the main character, Amyโs, high school days and childhood with her best friend Jade.
Amy is currently in medical school to become a doctor. She is on her first rotation on the psychiatric ward for a twelve hour night shift. She has been dreadful of this rotation for a very long time but what is her reasoning? Itโs a dark secret that she is unable to share with anybody.
As the time ticks away slowly, events begin to transpireโฆ events that are more than her own fears and event that do not only affect her, but everyone else on Ward D too! Who can she trust or can Amy trust anyone at all, including her self?
While locked in, staff and patients seem to slowly be disappearing, but how is that even possible? Patients can not get out being thereโs a code to exit the ward. The head Doctor working the shift with her ensures nothing bad could possibly happen up there, no matter how dangerous a patient may potentially be.
What happens in these 12 hours, will change everyone on Ward D, forever! If there is even a possibility of an escape.
This novel is brilliantly written, has you truly questioning all the possibilities and has you on the edge of your seat until the very end. I even started to feel my own mental state was being manipulated by the twist, turns and stories that were bound to come out.
Ward D releases on May 8, 2023 and you do not want to miss out on this twisted story. PRE - ORDER LIKE NOW.
Thank you, Victory Editing Netgalley Co-op and the amazing Freida McFadden for an ARC in exchange for my honest review. I am still in shock and processing everything from the start of it, to how it kept building up and being creeper than one can have imagined all the way to the finish line.
I was given the opportunity to read an ARC of the upcoming release, #wardD. I am not sure if there are enough words to describe how much I loved this book. After a lifetime of reading YA and eventually romance, Freida McFadden helped introduce me with her books to this genre that I have been so desperately missing. And now thereโs no going back.
This book did such an excellent job with every character-every one of them hooks you in to mess with your mind and keep guessing. I waited for the twist to come, and still dropped my jaw with the ending. If it wasnโt for having to adult, I would have read straight through in one sitting. Canโt express my adoration for this author enough. Hands down 5/5.
Thank you @fmcfaddenauthor and @netgalley for allowing me this copy, and for showing true appreciation to your fans.
Check out Ward D With its release #may8!

Thank you Netgalley , Freida McFadden , and publisher for this arc! Freida McFaddenโs psychological thrillers have been a recent favorite of mine and I have been binge reading her books since last December. Medical student , Amy is assigned to Ward D , a psychological ward overnight. Amy is anxious about staying in the locked ward.
This story is well - written and like all of her books sucked me in from the beginning. As her books always do , Ward D has twists that leave you speechless.
Highly recommend this one!
I buddy read this with my pal jordan and I swear, I was only supposed to read until 40% - and somehow, I finished the book ๐
๐ซฃ๐ฌ it was THAT addicting!!!
per usual, Iโm totally enamored with freidaโs writing!! at first, the plot felt very similar to SHUTTER ISLAND, which made me nervous because the plot twist in that one is so specific and one of my favorites of all time
but I was so pleased that I was wrong!!! by a sure fluke, I was able to guess the main plot twist, but it was such a fun ride that it didnโt even bother me (in fact, I was pretty impressed with myself ๐ฌ๐ฌ)
Iโm all for a locked door mystery - and the creepy psychiatric ward setting made the thriller vibes immaculate. MC amy was the perfect amounts of unreliable and likable, which had me rooting for her safety the entire time. and can we talk about the uniqueness and creativity of the patients in ward d?
I will forever love freida thrillers for their quick, short chapter, bingeable style with a last minute plot twist to send me over the edge!
a huge thank you to netgalley and freida herself for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review!

I was so thrilled to get this book as this is one of my favorite authors. Her books are always fast paced, unpredictable and shocking. Even when I know that going in I think I know what the twist will be but Iโm always surprised at the end and I think well done Freida you got me once again.
Amy Brenner is a medical student who has to do spend the night in a locked psychiatric ward. My anxiety is instantly spiked by just the thought of having to do this. Then you are reading and you are never sure who is telling the truth and who is lying and you know a twist is coming but it always shocks you.
I enjoyed the past and present time lines. I liked how at end you discover the truth of what went on in the past leading to this moment.
Amy at the end will always be damaged by what she went through in one awful night. One brilliant read that I canโt recommend high enough.
WOW WOW WOW - Another AMAZING read by the one and only Freida McFadden! I read this in one sitting. Thank you to Freida, Net Galley, & the publisher for the opportuntiy to read this ARC.
Amy Brenning is a medical school student who is spending the night in a psych ward, Ward D. This is the usual for someone going through their rotations before they have chosen their speciality - so what could go wrong? The plot thickens when some familiar faces appear during her rotation, but it's only 13 hours, she can make it through no problem.
In true Freida fashion, just when you THINK you have it figured out, she will take you down another 147 paths. As someone who has physically been in a psych ward visiting, it took me back there too, and the entire time I felt uneasy and wanting to know more.
The suspense and the fear builds, and I found myself clicking away on my kindle because I couldn't get to the next page fast enough. Amy is such an interesting and dynamic character, and she kept me engaged the entire time.
Also, the tie in of other characters was very intentional, and every little detail shared always matters, so make sure to not skip those.
Make sure to pre-order the book for May 8 or get it on Kindle or Kindle Unlimited upon release!
Amy is a medical student that is required to do a rotation on Ward D. This psychiatric floor is the last place she wants to spend an entire night, but not for reasons anyone would ever know. From the time she arrives on the floor, she just canโt shake the bad feeling that continues to overcome her. Turns out she may have more reasons to be concerned than she ever could have imaginedโฆwill she live to tell about her night spent on Ward D?
Frieda has become one of my immediate buy authors. She has yet to disappoint me and this book is no exception. I think Iโm used to her style and at some point will be willing to figure out her twists, but that certainly hasnโt happened yet! You do not want to miss Ward D available May 8th!
Thanks to #netgalley and #freidamcfadden for this ARC of #wardD!
Wow! Where to start? Freida has once again killed it with this book!
She did a fantastic job giving us a very creepy setting, a locked, psychiatric ward, overnight!
Amy is the main character and a medical student working this overnight shift, which she has dreaded from the start. She is really nervous about being locked inside this ward overnight. She's very paranoid something terrible is going to happen, and when it does, Amy goes into panic mode. The fear in Amy can be felt throughout the book and to the point I was feeling worried for her. Freida did a great job giving each patient their own unique personalities. Some you loved and some you loved to hate.
This is one of my fav books by Freida. I know I say this everytime she writes a darn book, buy they just keep getting better each time!
Thank you Freida so much for the advanced copy and to your publisher Victory Editing Netgalley Coop
