Medical student Amy has been assigned to a night shift rotation on Ward D. She is terrified of the locked unit and for reasons of her own, she wants nothing to do with psychiatry. The longer the night goes on, the stranger things become. Now, people are disappearing and Amy doesn’t know who she can trust. Or if she can even trust herself. Will Amy survive her night on Ward D?
This may just be my new favorite thriller. This book starts you off with a small feeling of dread that just continues to grow the further along you get in the book. You don’t know who to trust and what is actually real. This book was fun and SUPER creepy and will have you feeling a continuous sense of impending doom. Frieda has once again woven her magic into another brilliant story. 5/5⭐️
Thank you to Frieda McFadden and Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I love a good thriller, and I consider myself one of those people who are able to guess an ending, but I never can when it comes to Freida’s books- Ward D being the same.
We follow the story of a medical student who is scheduled a night shift in the psychiatric ward- Ward D. We hear of her nerves before starting her shift, and see them develop through out. Seeing as how nervous Amy was to begin with, she’s quite on edge throughout her shift even after reassurance from the attending doctor, Dr. Beck, and nurse, Ramona. She spends some time with a few patients while trying to avoid the seclusion rooms at all costs since there is a dangerous patient in there. We hear of Amy’s connections with the patients, as well as their own concerns with the night ahead of them.
I was on the edge of my seat for this entire story, and I couldn’t put it down. You won’t be disappointed with this story or with the multiple twists at the end. You will never know who to trust!
This book was amazing! But, did we expect anything less from @fmcfaddenauthor the queen of psychological thrillers???
From the start, I was hooked, Freida’s writing style is my absolute favorite. Short chapters, suspense and twists. Nothing better! This is probably my 2nd favorite book from her ever. (The housemaid of course will always be number 1)
Make sure you give this book a read when it’s released on May 8th!
I was so stoked to get my hands on an advanced copy of this book because… duh, Freida! This book was so well developed, the characters were flawlessly built up, and of course I couldn’t guess the plot if I even tried. (I’ve learned not to try with Freida and just buckle up) seriously though, read this book and you will absolutely not be disappointed.
Freida McFadden, how do you keep outdoing yourself every. single. time??!!!
In this creeptastic medical thriller, med student Amy Brenner is on an overnight rotation in a locked psychiatric ward, also known as Ward D. Anyone would be a little anxious, but Amy has reasons for being freaked out that run deeper than most.
Amy only needs to make it through 13 hours on the ward, but as the clock ticks down, things go from bad to worse. There’s a violent patient locked in one of the seclusion rooms, and to make matters worse, Amy discovers her childhood bestie is a patient. And then patients and staff start disappearing… will Amy make it until morning?
The way Freida perfectly cranks up the undercurrent of fear little by little is like the proverbial frog gradually being boiled alive. That delicious dread gets under your skin and keeps growing as you flip the pages! By the time you get to the freaky finale (one I never saw coming, by the way!), you’re completely immersed in the story. I was so hooked on this fast-paced, twisty thriller that I stayed up half the night so I could find out if Amy would survive her night!
Many thanks to NetGalley, Victory Editing, and the author for providing me an advance copy of this book.
If you are able to clear your mind and tell yourself this is just a story, it doesn't have to imitate real and can be far fetched, you will enjoy this. Which I did to an extent. There wasn't too much going on for ninety percent of the book but backstory and talk, for me that was okay. The rest was surprising, intense and entertaining. This was a very quick read and just okay for me. I do love this author but it's not one of my top reads. I also would of liked it a little more without the last couple of pages where I felt it could of just left well enough alone. Three Stars.
Thank you Netgalley and Victory Editing Netgalley Co-op for this ARC.

Get ready, Freida Readers! She has a new one coming and it doesn't disappoint!
Amy is a medical student who is taking her turn interning in a psych ward for the night. This is not an assignment she has been looking forward to, after all, her best friend since kindergarten spent time here after a psychotic episode in their teens. It's a wing that is on lockdown, which means she is pretty much stuck for the night.
Determined to power through, Amy starts her rounds. Most of the patients are harmless, except for the violent one restrained and locked in selusion room one. She can hear him, screaming and ramming into the door when she walks past, but if he's restrained, how can he be ramming the door?
Then the lights go out. When they come back on, things are eerily quiet, and people start disappearing one by one.
Throughout the night Amy is second guessing herself. She doesn't know which patients are telling the truth and which are just plain crazy, but one thing she does know, something bad is happening in Ward D and it has its eyes set on her.
This was a fun one! I just sat back and enjoyed this wild ride. I knew there would be twists coming round the corner so I just let them come and smiled when each one was revealed. Yes, some twists were horrifying; others were satisfying. All were enough to make me wish I could experience them again for the first time.
You can pre-order Ward D on Amazon in paperback (I have!) or for your Kindle. We will have this one in the library!

If there’s one thing Freida McFadden is good at, it’s writing thriller novels. Another thing she’s good at? Breaking NetGalley every time she drops a new book! Two days ago, I found out this existed. Yesterday, I was able to get a copy. Today, I devoured it. All of the author’s books are page turners, but this one was so good that I was halfway through before I even bothered to check how far along I’d gotten.
Amy is a medical student, and is going through different rotations within her hospital, trying to decide which field of medicine she wants to study. When she finds out that she is scheduled for an overnight shift in a locked psychiatric ward, she is terrified (for a variety of reasons, but does that really sound fun to anyone?). Everyone tells her how they’ve done it, it’s not that bad, you’ll be safe and there’s an emergency code for the door locks just in case you need to escape. There’s no need to escape, though - these patients are highly sedated and not much of a danger.
The shift comes, and Amy realizes on top of this horrifying night where she has to confront her fears of psychiatric disorders, locked doors and things that go bump in the night, that her ex-boyfriend will be working with her. She also learns that there is no phone reception in the ward, and after meeting the doctor on call, that she has to find a patient to interview and analyze.
Amy ALSO soon realizes (the hits keep coming) that she knows someone on this ward, and it’s not her ex. She knows a patient, very well, and is worried about what will happen if they see her. Her childhood best friend is there, and the book flashes back and forth from her childhood to present day as we find out how this friend ended up in confinement. The back story on this is really strong, and laid the groundwork for why Amy was so scared of this assignment in the first place.
I can’t give out much more, but this is a looooong night, full of surprises. The suspense was definitely there with this one. Amy and the reader both are left wondering who they can trust, who is telling the truth, and who will be alive in the morning. The twists kept coming, the creep factor kept rising, and the ending left me surprised and laughing (in a good thriller way). It’s no surprise, Freida again gets the five.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
(Thank you to the Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op and Freida McFadden for the ARC in exchange for my review. This book is slated to be released on May 8, 2023.)
Thank you Freida McFadden and NetGalley for a copy of this ARC.
All I can say is WOW. I think I have to agree with Freida’s Mom when she said “OMG THIS IS THE BEST BOOK EVER!!!”
This is a wild, creepy ride. Amy, a medical student, is working a 12 hour shift in Ward D, also known as the inpatient mental health unit. Of course, rather than being a quiet night, it’s a night of terror.
The story is well written and like all Freida books, it sucked me in from the beginning. And like always, I thought I knew what the twist was and I was absolutely wrong.
I found myself laughing a few times at some humorous remarks and the way Freida portrayed some of the characters. Let’s just say the way some of the patients on Ward D are described made me chuckle.
5 star read. Totally worth the wait until it comes out on May 8th.
Ward D by Freida McFadden 5⭐️
I love this authors books, so wanted to read the new release ASAP. A high octane powered psychological thriller.
It has her signature chatty first person narrative with splashes of humour. This is Freida’s persona in her fb group or in interviews, so you can very much hear her voice when reading the book.
Amy is a 2nd year medical student on a nightshift placement on a locked psychiatric ward, Ward D, a place that she has horrible memories of. It’s told in a split time narrative, the present and 8 years earlier.
I immediately liked Amy, and you can’t help but get swept up in her anxiety.
It’s got a dark creepy vibe, verging on horror. I love the unreliability of the characters in this book, it works really well. I usually find unreliable narrators annoying, I lose any sense of being grounded and it unsettles me. The tension is palpable throughout, it’s fast paced. The characters have sufficient depth for you to relate to them but it’s more plot driven with all those twists and red herrings.
It’s hands down my favourite Freida book. It’s one I’d highly recommend.
My last word is do read this book 😊
Amy is a med student cycling through her placements, working hard and still seeking what her focus will be. She dreads the evening work that she must do for psychology on Ward D - an inpatient unit due to her past experience with ward and some unfinished business from her childhood.
As soon as Amy enters the ward things begin to go wrong. She isn't sure who she can trust or if she should even stay. Even if it's all in her head, will she make it through the night?
This is a story that you should read at night! An incredibly creepy and scary story, McFadden slowly turns the screws until you fear for Amy's and your own life! If you like a scary institution story this twisty thriller is for you!

This is my favorite Freida book to date! I need some more Ward D stories! Please!
I loved this book! I loved how the author gave each character their own story and how she painted the picture of mental health in each one. Spider Dan is my favorite. He’s precious. I really didn’t know what to believe or who was telling the truth. It also had a scary aspect of being LOCKED IN a psychiatric ward. I was captivated from the very first page! Freida’s books always draw you in and won’t let go until you’ve read the very last word!
Did I read this book in one sitting? Yes, yes I did. Queen Freida can do no wrong! This was marvelous!!! So many twists and turns! So much suspense. Her writing is perfection! Give me MORE!!!
I loved this book! Freida always writes with such precision! I know there will always be a twist with her writing. I suspected one of the twists but was shocked as I read! I finished this in a few hours. Hands down one of my favorites of hers! 5 stars!
Amy Brenner is a medical student who as part of her rotation has to spend a night in Ward D – a locked down psychiatric ward. Amy does not want anything to do with the field of psychiatry for reasons of her own. Soon, as the evening goes on, patients and staff start disappearing. Amy fears for her life and begins to wonder if she will survive until the morning.
The author paints a picture of a psych ward perfectly and I was genuinely creeped out. I along with Amy didn’t know who to trust and what was real! Of course, about ¾ of the way through I thought I had it figured out. NOPE! Freida is the Queen of misdirection, and all of my theories were wrong.
Freida always saves the best for last, her EPILOGUES! I live for her epilogues! Once I see I am getting close to the ending of one of her books, my heart starts pounding in anticipation. This one did not disappoint!
One May 8th comes around, turn your phone on do not disturb, and be prepared to be blown away once again by this newest Freida book!
🖤As always, thank you @fmcfaddenauthor for allowing me to read your work before its publication date!
"𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐢𝐝 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐧." ~𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐮𝐝
You know that feeling you get when you're driving and you pass a police car, and even though you're a law-abiding citizen, you start to think, "What if there's a body in my trunk? What if someone put a suitcase full of drugs in there?" Well, that's the feeling I had pretty much during the entire course of this book!
With Freida's signature writing style, she doesn't spend a lot of time on lengthy explanations or drawn out expositions. The story begins immediately when medical student Amy Brennar receives her instructions for her mandated rotation in the psych ward, known as Ward D. The instructions are terse and concise, and Amy is terrified to spend the night locked in the ward, but her fear is justified; she just can't let anyone know why.
Like an episode straight out of 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑻𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒁𝒐𝒏𝒆, Amy becomes convinced that something terrible will happen during her shift; the patients feel it too, and they are especially afraid of a patient who is locked in a seclusion room. Patients start disappearing and the tension keeps rising until that total jaw-dropping twist. I had barely recovered from that one when another one hit me that made me question everything!
Told in both dual timelines and a countdown of the terrifying night in question, WARD D proves that just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.
Thank you so much to the author for my early copy. WARD D will publish May 8, 2023.
