This book truly in Frieda fashion had me on the edge of my seat flipping through the pages when I thought I had it figured out oh boy was I sadly mistaken. I love any and all books she comes out with, she gives you the ability to get lost in a book for a few hours or a few days depending on your rate of speed and how long you wish to make the book last. Me I just fly through them cause it feeds a hunger in me for the thriller, edge of your seat page turning madness I crave in her books.
5 stars hand down if I could rate it higher I absolutely would in a heart beat.

First of all, thank you, Freida, for the opportunity to be an ARC reader for Ward D.

If I could give it more than 5 stars, I absolutely would.

My review:

When medical student, Amy Brenner, is told she'll be working overnight in Ward D at the hospital as part of her psychiatric rotation, a feeling of dread immediately overcomes her. There's a reason Amy wants to stay clear of the locked, inpatient unit. A secret reason she cannot reveal to anyone.

Meanwhile, and throughout the story, Ms. McFadden, mistress of the dual timeline, takes the reader back eight years to when Amy was in high school. And the events leading up to why the last place she wants to spend the night is in Ward D.

Back in the present, familiar and unfamiliar faces alike greet her as she gets her bearings in Ward D and starts literally counting down the hours until her shift is over. She gets to know both staff and patients... until they start disappearing.

As Amy's past clashes with her present, an increasing number of strange and terrifying events cause her to suspect that something terrible is happening on Ward D.

As she tries desperately to figure out what is going on... and who she can trust... she realizes that if she makes the wrong choices or relies on the wrong people, she may never leave Ward D.

In true Freida McFadden fashion, Ward D is a psychological thriller roller-coaster ride, jam-packed with twists and turns. It offers chapter after chapter of hints, red herrings, and cliffhangers, which keep the reader turning the pages long after bedtime, desperate to find out what will happen next.

I will be posting this review in several places, including Netgalley, Instagram, Goodreads, Amazon, and my own Facebook author/editor page (Facebook.com/jhorganwrites), which has over 21,000 followers, to get the word out to as many people as possible about this awesome book!

Freida McFadden never disappoints! I absolutely loved Ward D. I loved the characters in this book and the suspense. There were times it really creeped me out, lol! In the best way. I thought it was really interesting as well to see a view from someone who is in medical school like this and having to stay overnight at a Ward. I love the fact that someone she was once close to came back into her life in an unexpected way. I also like that this book had past and present chapters in it. It adds a good touch and we really get to know the main character more. As always, the plot twist was amazing and not one I saw coming at all! I will read anything and everything that Freida puts out!

Freida has done it again!!!!! I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. The twists were incredible and I was absolutely shocked at the ending.

I would recommend this
5 star book to every reader I know.

I like Freida’s books cause they are quick reads. With that being said, this is the first one of hers that I’ve read that took me what felt like forever to finish. I just could not get into it. The writing felt off from the writing in her other books. I know lots say her writing isn’t mature and usually I’m ok with the simplicity of her style, but the writing in this one felt very juvenile. I couldn’t connect with any of the characters, and the storyline felt weak. It just dragged on and on and I couldn’t wait to get to the end. Sad to say it was a boring read. Will I stop reading Freida’s books? Heck no! Hoping I like the next one a lot more.

Thank you NetGalley for the Advance Review Copy. #NetGalley #WardD

Awesome book! This is the first that I've read that took place on a psych ward and it was great! I was surprised multiple times the entire way through this.

I love the author’s books. They are quick reads that suck you in and make you want more. I was sure I knew what was going on in this one. Positive. And nope I was wrong.

It’s part of the genre I call a popcorn thriller. It plays out in my head as I read it. Just like a movie. Like if a book sucked you in like a Hallmark movie but as a thriller instead of a romance. You know exactly what you’re going to get but not really. Relatable characters, an engaging story and twists you’ll never predict no matter how good you are at it. And always the one final twist that you really didn’t see coming.

Grab this one or any of the author’s books at curl up and enjoy the wild ride. You won’t be disappointed.

A suspenseful page-turner but with not much else going for it. Sure, it was highly readable and a quick escape but that's about it. The protagonist takes stupidity to new heights, says and does questionable things, and it's just frankly embarrassing. Girl, stop.

Although the book starts off promising, it just goes downhill from there with a disappointing reveal. The climax was simply laughable with Amy saying even more idiotic things. Like wow, all the answers are literally staring you in the face and you still can't figure it out? That's what blows my mind most about this thriller, not the very stilted twists and turns.

I didn't completely hate the book and it did intrigue me at times, so 2 stars.

After reading both of the housemaid books i was so excited to get Ward D. Amy is a medical student who must do a rotation on Ward D the psychiatric ward. This is another thriller with twists that keep you reading late into the night. I recommend. Thank you netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for a honest review.

This was such a great read. I couldn't put it down and ended up reading it in one go. My only gripe is that it constantly repeats that people with mental illnesses are terrifying and they're all super dangerous and just crazy. Amy also doesn't come across as a med student and she definitely doesn't grow. However, I was still hooked. It's fast paced and I had no idea where it was going. As usual, Freida packed the book full of twists and turns and keeps you questioning everything until the very last page. There's some interesting characters and Ward D is the perfect creepy backdrop.

I think this was my least favorite Freida McFadden book. I really disliked Amy. I didn't like her thoughts on her patients and she seemed really immature to be a med student. I absolutely will continue to check out Freida McFadden books though her books are always twisty quick reads that keep me guessing and entertained. I just disliked Amy so much I wasn't so into this one as some of her other books. Definitely check out Never Lie, The Housemaid Books, or The Inmate before you get into this one. I just think those are better and 5 star reads and think you will enjoy them better as well. Thank you to Netgalley and Freida more my copy!

Oh boy, let me spill the tea on this one! Now, usually I'm a huge fan of Freida, but whoa, hold your horses! This book was a total train wreck, or should I say, a disaster of epic proportions (at least, that's my quirky take, despite what Goodreads and bookstagram say). I genuinely adore Frieda's other works, but I just can't get past the plot and rhetoric in this book.

So, picture this: we've got our main character, Amy, a med student who's terrified of the psychiatric ward. And guess what? That's the whole shebang! The entire book revolves around Amy's fear as she's forced to spend a night in the psych ward (as a student, not as a patient).

But here's the mind-blower (and I can't blame it on anything other than a colossal judgment lapse): Amy's rhetoric and fear are continuously reinforced throughout the entire darn book. No life lessons to be found here from good ol' Dr. McFadden. The excessive use of the word "crazy" and the notion that all mentally ill people are violent? Yup, it's hammered into our skulls even more with the "big twist" and the grand finale. Like seriously, Amy ends up with the one person from the ward whom she deemed "normal." Ha! Yeah, right. This book just left me feeling icky without any redemption.

Sure, the book had its usual fast pace, but if you want to enjoy it, you really, really can't think too much about it. Oh, how I wish I could feel differently about this one. Big thanks to NetGalley for giving me the chance to review this honestly.

Freida did it again! This one was a true rollercoaster. I had so many theories throughout the book and it was so fun unraveling the truth. This one gave me Shutter Island vibes and the creep factor was definitely there! I love how Freida gets you engrossed so quickly, but manages to keep you entertained throughout the book. I was so close to giving it five stars, but Amy started to annoy me with the decisions she was making and how clueless she seemed. Thank you: NetGalley, Victory Editing, and Freida McFadden for allowing me to read this one in exchange for an honest review.

I’m not going to rate this book on Amazon as I was unable to finish it. However, I do feel a sense of obligation to share some information regarding the general theme here and on Goodreads.

Three out of the first four chapters that I read are about how the main character is terrified to work in the psychiatric unit of the hospital where she is a medical student. Not just the paragraphs, but almost every sentence within those paragraphs. Over and over she relates how scared she is to be around these patients and how it is a very unsafe environment. The MC went as far as to hoping she would get in a car accident and break her arm on the way to her shift so she wouldn’t have to work in the psych unit. I had an extremely hard time getting past that thought.

There’s so much stigma related to mental illnesses, and this book just lends to that stigma and reinforces it in individuals uneducated on the subject. Although I do struggle with various mental illnesses, my opinion does not come about by being triggered as a patient, but rather in defense as someone who devotes a lot of their time in advocating for all that struggle with their mental health. I absolutely do not get offended easily and that is not something that I take lightly.

This review is about breaking through the stigma, about human decency, respect and consideration in the treatment of vulnerable individuals that are afflicted with mental illnesses. It comes from a place of standing behind, not just those individuals, but those that love and care for them and mental health advocates as well. I do not feel that this book represents those things.

The truth is that those who fight every day to overcome these obstacles are much more vulnerable to be a victim of violence and prejudice than be a perpetrator. The more personal truth is that people with these mental illnesses fight for their lives every day, and this type of misinformation and ignorance what is perpetuated by this type of literature is just one more thing that makes them have to fight harder than they should have to.

With all of that being said, I Have enjoyed the books i have read by this author and would recommend some of her other books to anyone who enjoys a great psychological thriller. In the meantime, I, and many like me who I see have left similar reviews, will hold onto hope that this misinformation does not become common place. Its very hard for me to understand how this was even published. I did read the updated version but to ethically and morally update it would require an entire rewrite..

Please check out the NAMI Website for information, education and assistance in regards to mental illnesses.

Amy is a medical student that has to work an overnight shift on a locked psych ward. Will she make it through the night?

This book was SO GOOD!! I truly thought I had it figured out, but I should have known better! Frieda McFadden is one of my favorite authors for that very reason. Not only do her books flow so well and keep you hooked from one chapter to the next, there are so many twists! I always think I have the ending figured out, but I am always wrong. I love when a book pulls you in from the beginning and you don’t want to stop reading. The chapters kept my interest especially when they ended: amazing cliffhangers where you just HAVE to read ONE more before going to sleep!

This is a psychological thriller you do not want to miss!

This was such a fast read for me!! This book takes you on a wild ride. Amy Brenner is main character and is in her third year at medical school. One requirement for school is to do a nightshirt in Ward D. Amy is really stressing this 13 hour shift mainly due to personal history. As the story unfolds it is told in dual timelines featuring event in Amy’s past. Such a fast past thriller. To add to the stressful events the patients are allowed to roam the ward but it is locked to the outside during the night shift. Of course there are a few twists. Many thanks to Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op and NetGalley for the digital review copy of this novel. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Amy is a medical student who has to do her first overnight shift on Ward D, the hospitals psychiatric ward. She’s nervous to not only be locked in, but about a relationship she has with a patient. Her fears aren’t eased when she finds out there’s a very dangerous person in the seclusion room. Her night starts out easy enough until patients start telling her that the seclusion patient is going to kill them all. Will Amy be able to make it through the night?

Freida will forever be an autobuy author for me. Her reads are my comfort thrillers. You know what you are getting yourself into, and that includes endless twists and turns. There are so many patients on Ward D that seem trustworthy. Once you believe they are telling the truth something comes up to make you second guess yourself. Amy is the main POV and she is an unreliable narrator. As more of her past comes out, you start to wonder if she should be on Ward D as a patient. I like the introduction of her ex-bestie who is a patient. You only get bits of their childhood throughout the book and when you finally get the whole picture, things start to fall into place. As always, Freida knows how to write an amazing epilogue. Pick this one up if you love Freida or you want to go on a twisty ride

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Shoutout to @netgalley and @freida for this wild ride of an ARC
