Review:
Freida McFadden has done it again👏 This book was amazing, just as I expected. Freida McFadden has quickly become an auto-buy/auto-read author for me. This story is written from Amy’s POV in alternating timelines between the present and her time in high school eight years prior. I could not put this book down. If I didn’t have to work I would have easily read this in one day😅 I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a fast-paced, easy-to-read thriller.

This publishes May 8th and will be available on Kindle Unlimited.

Thank you to @netgalley and @fmcfaddenauthor for this early copy in exchange for an honest review.

Ward D has become my new favorite Freida McFadden book. As always, the twist was completely unexpected and mind blowing. I had to pause to process what happened. It had all of my favorite elements you could ask for in a thriller. Locked “room”, taking place in one night, twists, untrustworthy characters. Easily one of my new favorite books.

“Whenever I pick up a book, it’s like an escape. For an hour or two, I get to be part of the book world instead of my own much more boring world.”

WARD D
by Freida McFadden
Published 5.8.23
4.5 stars

Freida McFadden has been one of my go-to thriller authors this year, and when I found out that I was chosen to read an ARC of her new book, Ward D, I couldn’t have grabbed my Kindle faster! Thank you to Netgalley for this gifted ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed Ward D, and similar to other Freida novels, you are thrust into a world where you think you know the characters and vaguely have an idea of what’s going on, when in reality, you have no clue whatsoever.

Knowing Freida is actually a brain physician made this novel even greater. I appreciated the descriptions of mental health and the positive outlook on person-first language versus diagnosis-first language.

I also really liked the MC of this story, and the chapters went back and forth between the present and an event that occurred eight years prior. I flew through the chapters and really was itching to find out how it ended. A great read that I would definitely recommend!

Thank you to Netgalley, Freida McFadden, and Victory Editing. Where to begin? I have read one other book by this author. I have heard they always hook you from the first page; typically, you will stay up all reading them, and you cannot read other books alongside her books because you are so intrigued. True, and true, I did not want to put it down, and I even dreamed about being on Ward D with Amy and all the other characters. I would say that is a 5/5, without a doubt. Now I have ordered some of her other books! She is super talented, and if you are looking for a thriller read, grab Ward D and get ready.

Fastest book I’ve ever read!

I was approved for an early copy in exchange for my honest review.

From the beginning I was pulled right in. Once I started reading it i could not put it down. Because of the short chapters i was well into the first half of the book without even realizing how far i had read. The book is full of suspense and keeps your attention while you’re struggling with the main character on deciding who you can trust and who you can’t.
It has one POV which makes it easy to follow and goes from present to past at ease. Not only do you get a glimpse of her past you get to count down the hours of one long suspenseful night.
I would expect nothing less from Freida.

Amy has been dreading her evening working on Ward D, the hospital’s inpatient mental health unit. There are very specific reasons why she never wanted to do this required overnight rotation. Reasons nobody can ever find out.
And as the hours tick by, Amy grows increasingly convinced something terrible is happening within these tightly secured walls. When patients and staff start to vanish without a trace, it becomes clear that everyone on the unit is in grave danger.
Amy’s worst nightmare was spending the night on Ward D.
And now she might never escape.

I loved this book. I read it very quickly even though I promised I would pace myself so that I could savor it. So many twists and turns, I had whiplash! One of Freida’s best yet.

I’m true Freida fashion, this book kept me guessing the whole time! Just when I thought I had it figured out I would be blindsided! It has short chapters which I love in a book. And that twist at the end gets me every time with this author! I very much enjoyed it! Thanks NetGalley and Freida for letting me devour this gem early!!!

Sometimes books within one location can be so hit or miss and Frieda definitely nailed it with this one!! This book takes place in the psychiatric ward of a hospital. Our main character, Amy, is doing an over night rotation and who else does she run in to but her ex boyfriend. Things quickly go down hill from there and it really makes you question if Amy is also suffering from mental illnesses or just suffering from over exhaustion. This book was so well down and I flew through it. Highly recommend!

Like with all Frieda McFadden books I really enjoyed this one. I love that she writes short chapters. I felt like the characters were all unique and I wanted to know what happened next. The only reason I would give it a four and not a five is because I was able to spot the twists. I blame that on the fact that I have read so many of her books . I love everything she writes and this was no exception.

Amy is a medical student that is required to do a rotation on Ward D. The psychiatric floor is the last place Amy wants to be, but it’s just for 13 hours. What could happen in 13 hours? Well, it turns out a lot. As the night goes on, patients begin vanishing and other weird things begin happening on Ward D. It becomes obvious that everyone on Ward D is in danger. Will Amy make it through the night on Ward D? Only time will tell.

Frieda McFadden has done it again! She has produced another thriller that you just can’t put down. The characters on Ward D are all unique and fully developed. As you read, you really feel like you are there on Ward D with Amy. The twists and turns are outstanding. Frieda McFadden continues to be one of my favorite thriller authors. There is just nothing like her mouth-dropping twists and turns. This is a must-read book if you love thrillers. I give it 5/5 stars!

Thank you for providing me this ARC and I am happy to tell you that I loved the book! From the very beginning I felt a connection with Amy and I liked her character and humor throughout the story. This storyline was unique and even though I tried to figure out where this is going and making guesses on what could happen I didn’t get ANY of it right! The twists kept coming quickly, making this book hard to put down. I’m usually not a fan of switching back and forth in time but the few times that the author chose to do that it made sense and was well placed. Overall I loved the book and story and will post about it on my IG before it’s publishing date may 8th :-) thanks again!

Thank you Freida McFadden and netgalley for the advance readers copy.
In short, Amy is a medical student taking her turn working a clinical shift in a psych ward. Amy, like most of us, has skeletons in her closet and goes into the night with just one goal, get thru the night. McFadden does a wonderful job of building up the story and developing the characters, resulting in an unputdownable book!

In exchange for an honest review, I was given an advance reader copy of Ward D by Freida McFadden through NetGalley.
As excited as I was to be chosen to read the book before its publication date (May 8th ), I was nervous heading into this book. I have been working in the mental health field for several years now. I was afraid Ward D might further stigmatize those that suffer from serious mental illness. Luckily, I was pleasantly surprised to see one of the characters educate another character on utilizing People/Person First Language after they referred to someone as a 'schizophrenic.' Well done for calling attention to this sensitive issue and choosing your platform to educate about this Freida McFadden!
As many of you already know (or may be pleasantly surprised to learn), our beloved Freida is active in the medical community. In "real life," she works as a physician specializing in treating brain injuries. Her professional background lends beautifully to her ability to sneak some medical terminology into her stories effortlessly. I loved seeing my favorite evidence-based clinical resource mentioned in the book. Yes, simple things like that excite me. She also does an outstanding job of breaking down those medical subjects in layman's terms for those who don't have a robust medical background.
I have worked in an inpatient psychiatric setting for several years now. In the book's first part, I found myself reading the story saying, "But what about XYZ protocol to make sure something like this DOESN'T happen?". I had to actively let go of those real-world what-ifs and enjoy the book for what it was. Once I did that, I got entirely captivated by the storyline. I found myself fascinated with the main character, Amy, while she navigated the unknowns of Ward D.
As with all of Freida's other books, I went into this book guessing how this story would end. This book was so fast-paced that I didn't have time to think about how Freida's twists and turns would pan out. She'd come and smack me with a twist that I never saw coming, only for me to follow it up with, "How did I not see that coming?". In true Freida fashion, she throws another curve ball just when you think you've figured out what was going on. A large portion of this book left me genuinely wondering who I could trust if I was Amy.
Ultimate takeaways:
1)If you work in any capacity in the mental health field, remember this isn't a story set at your place of employment. Let Ward D be experienced outside the constraints of what rules you may need to follow at your job.
2)If you've been a patient on an inpatient psychiatric unit or feel that this subject matter may hit too close to home for you, id love to suggest some other titles by Freida that you could check out instead. The Facebook group Freida McFans: The Official Reader Group for Freida McFadden, Author, is a great spot offering tons of reader feedback on her other books to check out instead.
Finally, if you're okay with takeaways one and two- WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? Hit the purchase button and buckle up because you're in for one heck of a ride!

Wow! Just another wow! Another masterpiece of making my mind into a "flosweb". Always trying to figure out but always ended up wrong.
Freida is such a masterclass in this genre, no wonder that almost everyone cant wait for a new release because definitely it will never be the same as her previous works. Always something to look forward to and feel excited about.
The story and twists is top notch to say and I absolutely loved how Amy's night turned into such a crazy experienced for a medical student. Anyway, I'd rather not sumnarize it as most reviewers often do. Definitely a must read for every thriller lovers out there.

Thank you so much Freida and Victory Editing Netgalley for the ARC. Cheers to more!

I was lucky to get an ARC copy of this book from NetGalley.

As always, Freida grabs my attention from the very beginning.

Freida’s books have more twists and turns than any roller coaster I’ve have been on.

When I think I can guess “who done it”, I am wrong every single time.

It’s a good thing I’m not being graded.
Every single time as I finish one of her books, I sit here with my mouth open- thinking “how does she do this to us.”

You will not want to miss this book.

I was lucky to get a ARC copy of this book from Netgalley and Freida and OMG!!!! Didn't see that ending coming. Love the twists Freida puts into her books. I love how her books grasp me from the beginning and it doesn't take chapters to do so. Another great read!

Amy Brenner is a medical student on a madatory overnight rotation in Ward D, a locked psychiatric unit. Amy has her own reasons for dreading this night, and as the evening progresses, it's clear something is terribly wrong and everyone in the unit may be in danger. One by one, the patients under Amy's care begin to disappear. Can Amy herself survive the night in Ward D?

Freida McFadden has done it again! This is by far the creepiest and most thrilling book I have read from this author and I absolutely LOVED it! In normal Freida fashion, the story is fast-paced and also humorous at times. The characters are developed just enough for you to either love or hate them, but not so much as to weigh down the story with unnecessary details. The setting is extremely creepy and could even pass for light horror for readers who dabble in both genres. The twists were amazing and left me questioning everything I thought I knew. Another five star hit from one of my favorite authors!

Many thanks to Net Galley, Victory Editing and of course, to Freida McFadden for the opportunity to review this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
