Medical student Amy Brenner is informed she has to spend the night on a locked psych ward. What could possibly go wrong? Amy knows that, for her, a night locked on Ward D could have devastating consequences. She could not be more terrified, and even worse, she has no one with whom to share her fears. No one can ever know exactly why Amy is so scared of Ward D. When Amy arrives for her shift, things seem ok, but before long, things to start going wrong. Whatever is going on, her fear seems to be contagious, and soon others on the ward are infected, giving Amy even more reason to worry. Will Amy and the others on Ward D survive the night?
In true Freida McFashion, this book will pull you in immediately and will not let go until the very end. Freida also has a unique ability to mix humor while simultaneously building tension to unbearable levels, and this is on display as never before.
Ward D by Freida McFadden will be released on May 8. Mark your calendars. You do *not* want to miss this phenomenal book.
This is a creepy, thrilling, nail-biter of a story told from one amazing and perhaps slightly unreliable perspective. The tension starts early and continues to what I'm sure most will find to be a shocking conclusion. I don't want to say too much because I hate spoilers, but after reading this book I have two recommendations for you. The first is to do everything you can to avoid psych wards. And the second, if you haven't read or preordered this book yet, then stop reading my review and head over to Amazon.
This was another FANTASTIC read from our queen, Frieda McFadden! I just love her books from the short chapters to the twists and turns, and this book was no different. Just when I think I got things figured out - BAM! Another twist. It kept me guessing the whole time and was such a wild ride.
She is so intentional. Every detail matters. Every interaction matters. Could not be happier with this book. This further secures for me that all of her books are an insta-buy. A big thank you to NetGalley, Victory Editing NetGalley co-op, and of course, we can't forget our queen Frieda McFadden ❤️
Don't forget to get your copy May 8th!! It will be available on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited.
This book was amazing! You can literally feel the intensity from start to finish. The plot was unique and the characters were believable (dare I even say likeable?). I could predict one of the things that happened near the ending but not the final twist in the last few pages. Wow!
Amy Brenner is a third-year medical student who is doing a psychiatry rotation on a locked ward for 13 hours. Just 13 hours. It’s overnight, and part of that time she should be able to sleep, yet hour after hour she just might wonder how long the night really will be.
There are definitely complications with this shift that Amy is about to work. For one thing, she has some familiarity with the psych ward as her best friend Jade was committed when they were both 16 years of age. Due to Jade’s hospitalization at that time, Amy and Jade’s friendship had dissolved. Furthermore, Jade made a statement about Amy state of mind then that still bothers her. Factor this. Jade is on the ward that Amy is working, Ward D. No longer friends by any stretch of the imagination, at the very least Amy just wants to get through the night.
There are several patients on the ward. In fact, one who is said to be very dangerous and is secluded in a room that should hold that person captive until morning. As long as that individual stays behind that locked door, Amy, the doctor and the nurse, as well as the other patients, should be safe. Meanwhile, while Amy struggles to get through the night, she also struggles with something that makes her question her own sanity.
This is truly a locked room thriller. In these types of books it is perfectly clear that someone or more than one person will not make it out alive. Freida McFadden raises the level of fear at a threatening level, and then with a secret that Amy is hiding, the tension in this book never lets up for one second. Will Amy and the others survive the night? Well, in this captivating, addicting, thrilling, exciting book, I dare any reader to put this book down for one second without finding out what happens, especially as the book races to a shocking finish.
Many thanks to Freida McFadden and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
4.5/5 stars. A thrilling and quick read. This one has you hooked instantly & keeps you guessing the whole way. When you think it’s over there’s one more twist for ya. I did figure out the first twist a little early which is why I didn’t give it five stars. Be sure to grab this one when it drops, May 8, 2023. McFaddens books never disappoint.
Enter Ward D with medical student Amy Brenner. She has to work in Ward D for 13 hours straight. The psychiatric ward is locked up tight and she has a code to get out IF she needs to! Amy is afraid to stay in Ward D for the night because she has a secret no one else knows. This had me glued to the pages from page 1 and I could not stop reading! Freida is the master of psychological thrillers and this is my new favorite!! This is book #14 for me of hers. Run out and buy it May 8, 2023.
Blimey.
This is bonkers.
Absolutely bonkers.
Pun intended!
I never quite know what to expect when I start a Freida McFadden book. They are bold, twisty, and utterly gripping.
I have an odd fascination with psychiatric hospitals, and was so excited to see my favourite author take the subject on in her own unique style. This takes it on, and hits it into the stratosphere.
The Facebook group Freida McFans have named the 'Freida Face', where the reader is so shocked that they gasp, put their hand over their mouths, but still continue reading after the twists have dropped.
I did this too at one particular scene, and then I laughed, because Freida had gotten me. I guessed one of the smaller twists (I'm a little proud because I never notice anything usually) but the big ones... not a chance. I was surprised at how dark it went! No subject is off the table with Freida, and I should have realised!
This is superb. It was everything I wanted, expected, and hoped for.
I thought this book was very fast paced with short chapters. The twist did surprise me but I feel like the last chapter did too much. I do enjoy this authors books! I can’t wait to read more.
So, I saw this title on NetGalley and had to request it! I was approved and immediately dove in. This book held me on the edge of my seat for the entire night. I didn’t check to see how far I was, what time it was, just kept reading until dawn broke and I was finished. This is a PAGE TURNER and kept me so completely invested I feel the need to shout it from the rooftops!
Amy Brenner is a medical student who has an overnight shift in Ward D, a locked psychiatric unit. She is extremely nervous and dreading this shift for reasons unknown to everyone but Amy. She knows logically she shouldn’t be afraid. She has the code that will open the door to let her out. The patients are all sedated and will likely spend most of her time there asleep. So, why is she so scared? What could possibly go wrong?
The twists and turns, the suspense and the medical atmosphere make for, yet another, perfect thriller. Freida has done it again and I recommend this to everyone who enjoys a good thriller. This is set to release on May 8, 2023!
Thank you NetGalley and Freida McFadden for the ARC!!
FIVE STARS!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I was so excited to be able to read this ARC, and it did NOT disappoint! In true Freida fashion, the twists were fantastic, and I couldn’t put it down. Every time I read one of her books, it becomes my favorite…..and the same goes for Ward D! Ahhhhh it was so good, you guys! The characters were excellent, and I loved it so much! Another amazing book by the thriller queen!!!

Frieda is an auto-buy author for me! Her writing style and the way she keeps you guessing literally until the last second in every book is *chefs kiss*!
I read this book in under two days, but could have easily devoured it in just a few hours had life not intervened. It’s a short read packed full of suspense and excitement.
I felt like I was within Ward D guessing who I should and should not trust the entire time. I felt like the book was very descriptive and somewhat true to a psychiatric unit which I appreciate. I want to note a specific part in the book… a doctor described someone as a schizophrenic and was corrected to say the human being is someone with schizophrenia. After all, we are all people, whether we have a disability or not. I think this is super important when talking about mental health (or any disability) and loved that it was mentioned in the book.
Thank you to Frieda McFadden and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
Thanks netgallery and Freida McFadden for a chance to read this amazing book!
Amy is a med student and is doing a psych rotation and as the night goes on the ward seems to be getting stranger and stranger.
In true Fredia Fashion this book is full of twist and shock! I wasn't able to put it down and DEVORIREDthis book in two days! Really well written and can't wait until Fredia next book!
This was my favorite Freida McFadden book so far!
Amy is a med student who will be spending her first overnight shift in the psychiatric unit, Ward D. She is nervous and anxious.. for very good reason.. I don’t think anything could have prepared her for what the thirteen hour shift was going to be like.
Ward D had lots of twists and turns and I think it would be a perfect book for a stormy night. I wish I could read more books like this. Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review. I can’t wait for this to be released so I can talk to more people about it!
I absolutely devoured this book. The characters, dual timelines, and setting were written so well. The twists kept coming and I could not put this book down!
I was hooked from the start! I didn't expect anything less from Freida McFadden. I love your fast paced books full of twists that keep you guessing!!!
Amy is currently a medical student and has always wanted to be a doctor. She is assigned to the night shift in the psychiatric ward called Ward D. She has been dreading this assignment for a while. During her shift, she is literally counting down the hours. The patients are allowed to wander in and out of their rooms which is odd. Then she starts to see strange things and some of patients actually go missing, including her ex-boyfriend, Cameron, another medical student who is also there that night. Told in dual time lines, we get a picture of Amy's past and her real reason that she was afraid to go into Ward D. Will Amy be able to survive the night?
Freida McFadden did it again! She blew me away with her latest novel! WARD D had my full attention and I couldn't put it down. I was trying to figure out what was happening and who and what to believe. I love how she makes you think one way and then you get to that final twist that makes your head spin. I really enjoy her novels. If you like incredible stories that leave you wanting to read more, this book is for you. I certainly didn't want it to end!!
Many thanks NetGalley and Freida McFadden for my ARC.

Wow those last 100 pages were intense! I had lots of theories going on in my head but I got it all wrong. I read this in the car, and my husband commented on the amount of gasps I made while reading. :-)
Thanks Frieda for another enjoyable read. And thanks NetGalley for the early read!

Actually Damon announced this to everyone as they were restraining him for isolation.
As Amy is counting down the hours until she can leave. She has found out that Jade is there. Jade confronts Amy and asks if she is still seeing things (Jade has always said that Amy is the one who needs to be locked in a psych ward) Amy is trying to be professional and do what needs to be done but is alone and hasn’t seen Cameron in some time. At first she thought he was sleeping but she cannot find him and is getting worried. . Hmmm
