Perhaps I'm too sentimental with regard to how much I love classic Putney novels, but I can't help but compare her stories from a couple decades ago with the ones she putting out today. They just don't match up, not even close.
The premise was decent; an amnesiac heroine running from captivity. A kind and handsome young man who has grown up well in spite of a rough start to life. Suspense. All the good stuff. But the concept of all these "gifted" people knowing things is just too convenient. As much as I appreciate a good paranormal romance, they have to be thoughtfully done with paranormal talents representing more than a plot device.
I liked all the Tremaynes; how could you not? They're all so nice and clever. But maybe that's the problem. I needed a flaw or two?
Despite all this, it's a readable novel and many people will probably love it. It just wasn't too my taste.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher and Netgalley. I'm writing this review voluntarily, and it reflects my honest opinion. Thanks!
I am a huge fan of Poldark and anything historical fantasy or historical romance so I was very excited for this book. It did not disappoint. It is unique and exciting and romantic and magical and just everything I hoped it would be! I look forward to more in this series.
Thank you for the digital ARC in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are completely my own.
Another wonderful book by the classic Mary Jo Putney! Very romantic with sexy bits but not too graphic. This is an exciting thriller interwoven with the supernatural. Bran is ‘gifted’ - he can sense things but not read minds. Merryn is also gifted - seeing glimpses of the future. She’d been held captive and kept in an amnesiac trance. When Bran is called back home to Cornwall by the parents who deserted him because of his gifts, he finds Merryn escaping from her captors. He knows that she is important and part of the reason he’d been drawn back to Cornwall. He rescues her but has to hide her from the danger he senses as she begins to recover slowly from her amnesia and together they face the danger.
Bran is an intriguing and engaging hero. He deals with difficulties with such equanimity and is obviously quite attracted to Merryn. He’s also hot! He’s described as having quiet, controlled power. He’s simply heroic. And that makes him very appealing. Merryn is at times mischievous and bewitching to Bran. It’s a wonderful thriller and romance!
Thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Books for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
I really enjoyed how the plot unfolded. I was shocked by the way that the lord died at the very end, which was quite a twist. I have enjoyed Putney's work in the past, and this book was no exception. I received a review copy from NetGalley and have left my opinion.
Silver Lady by Mary Jo Putney is an entertaining historical romance that is the first in a new series: Dangerous Gifts.
Sometimes you just want to read a good historical romance. You just want to be entertained, enthused, and swept away by passion, drama, romance, and daring escapades. This was one of those books.
I have enjoyed Ms. Putney’s Rogues Redeemed series in the past, so I figured I would start a new series when the opportunity presented itself.
A romance in Cornwall with action, drama, history, hijinks, heroes, spies, intrigue, amnesia, villains, passion and romance to the next level, and a bit of a paranormal vibe…and not a dull moment.
Bran and Merryn were interesting main characters with chemistry and yes the plot can travel to places that aren’t the most realistic, but does one read every book for realism? Nope. And I’m ok with that. A good time was had by all.
4/5 stars
