Do you ever read a book thinking it's going to be one way, and it definitely is not? I thought this would be a guide for those wanting to live a more simple life, but it was stories about why she does and maybe make you want to move to a farm.
Was it bad? Not at all, but it wasn't what I was expecting.
Like many, since 2020, I’ve been working towards a simpler life. Her book contains a lot of info on how to achieve this. From recipes and projects to her homesteading story, it’s a great read. I’m looking forward to listening to her podcast for the first time!
I love reading books about homesteading, so I chose Old-fashioned on Purpose. It's a well-written account of one family struggling to make a life on the unforgiving prarie of Wyoming
It speaks to the sense of adventure that most of us have, and only a few of us choose to act on. It's also a throwback to a simpler time.
If living this lifestyle appeals to you, or if you simply like reading about it, I would highly recommend this book.
In the interest of full disclosure, I received a free copy of this title to review from Net Galley.

Familiar with Jill Winger’s blog? Then you’ll be familiar with this content. More of her homespun wisdom all in one book and divided into chapters. I’ve always enjoyed her blog and podcast, so I enjoyed this book and the condensed, easy to find I for. Interspersed throughout are recipes and projects. Each chapter ends with actionable items to try. I enjoyed reading this ARC from NetGalley. Thank you.
A love letter to anyone who longs for a quieter way of life. Jill weaves her way through her journey from a ramen noodle cooking cog in the wheel of life to her discovery that she desired a slower more meaningful relationship with the earth. Eating local, growing food, making choices that resonate and fill the need to be grounded. The lovers of the little house on the prairie books will find this an enjoyable jaunt mixing old skills with modern life.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book! This was very nostalgic (days on my grandparents farm) and inspiring to read (I mended my daughter's dress instead of letting it sit around gathering dust). Would highly recommend this for readers wanting a book that feels like a cozy cup of tea. I rarely purchase books, however, this is one I would definitely add to my physical collection!
A hopeful book. Even if you can't have a simpler life, it's wonderful to read about it, dream about it.
Author Winger is humble, sweet, and yet so strong.
A great look at the problems and triumphs of living off the land, growing your own food, building and fixing, learning and growing (and yet still incorporating the best of modern day life).
Will happily handsell!
If you have ever dreamed of slowing down, of going back to the good old days your grandparents talked about, or just growing some of your own food then this lovely book is for you. It covers mindset to giving basic tips on getting started gardening with engaging stories thrown in. Now where’s my hoe, I need to try growing potatoes!
This book was...ok. I think I was expecting more of a how-to with actual guides and advice but mostly what I got was a bunch of stories that should inspire me to move to a farm. There's talk about pickling and how easy it is but no actual instructions, there's mention of getting goats and chickens but that's def not for me. Then there's all this talk about growing vegetables in the garden and all the benefits of that but other than a few tips there's no actionable insight. This reads more like a memoir and that's just not what I was in it for.
