I really like this story! Volume two gives a bit more depth to the characters, the world, puts them in new places, and gives them new friends. It also has some great astronomy-inspired art and the burgeoning romance is important but isn't central to this story yet. Really good manga.
Thank you NetGalley and Viz Media for this arc!
5/5 stars
A chill slice of life manga, which I loved volume one and also loved volume two! New characters and expansions of previous ones, this volume brought more to the table and fleshed out the story nicely. Excited to read more!
By the end of book one, we didn’t know much about our two main characters, so I really enjoyed getting to know them both more through these two volumes. This manga is perfect for any fans of slice of life with a dash of crush.
The Astronomy Club needs to start holding events and doing actual club activities, but first, they need ideas and some funds. The club advisor suggests Nakami and Magari travel to a small town and visit with past Astronomy Club alumna, Yui Shiromaru, who is an award-winning astrophotographer, and who may be able to provide some guidance with Nakami’s budding hobby and make it lucrative for the club. Meanwhile. Nakami and Magari separately explore their feelings for their friend and try to decide whether the safe haven they have created has begun to blossom into a crush. Towards the end, the grade-level goes on a field trip to a famous beach, and the two hope to sneak away to capture their award-winning photo, but the constant storms and cloud-cover, plus watchful chaperones, might ruin their plan.
This story has a much slower pace with hardly any action at all, but it is also very comforting and relaxing. The chapters are short and the overall feel is sort of slice-of-life, but each chapter progresses the storyline. Shiromaru also has an adorable cat, so this brings another cute element into this already adorable story. This volume introduces a romance element that might endear the storyline for some readers or it might disappoint others who were hoping this would be more of a story about platonic friendship. Overall, it is nice to see Nakami and Magari support one another, even though they have to break quite a few rules all the time in order to get what they need.

This second volume left me wanting to read more of the series. I love the characters and need to know more about their world. This manga is a great addition to a library's collection.
This volume starts to show the blossoms of a first crush developing for the main characters as they continue to fight the insomnia that plagues them. Their astronomy club grows by a member and they have to deal with minor school issues. It's a delightfully peaceful read that has a lot of heart and a lot of joy. Wholly recommended and immediately ordered for our library.
This series is very nice, it makes you feel calm, informs you on an art form, has a little sprinkle of teenage drama, but without feeling juvenile.
It's a must for people into cosy books.
I just love this series so far. This was just as good as the first one. The characters stay in character, nothing OTT, just a sweet, gentle, slice-of-life story of two teenagers with an issue that is invisible. They continue to support one another and they start to get...closer. Spring is in the air, but just a whiff. No drama, no love-shape; it's refreshing.
I'm really enjoying this series and recommend it as a nice palate cleanse if you are tired of Drama Llama Queen HS manga.
5, relaxing and enjoyable, stars.
My thanks to NetGalley and VIZ Media LLC for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.
After reading the first volume I loved it and proceeded to watch the anime since it came out recently. In this volume, none of the content was new to me because I have already watched past it. Either way, every time I pick up one of these volumes I'm blown away by the art. It is just gorgeous to look at, and with the story having a lot to do with astronomy and the night sky it's even more beautiful. I can't wait to get more into the story and see how the relationships develop with the characters. There is also something so relatable about seeing the daily struggles of something so simple like insomnia and anxiety.
Thanks to #NetGalley and #vizmedia for an eARC of #InsomniacsAfterSchoolVol2 by Makoto Ojiro to read and review.
I have been recommending this manga to teens who love the school setting. It's got a slice-of-life aspect to it that I think will be enjoyed by many. The bonds the two main characters form along the way to make their club are so cute.
This manga is the second volume in a cozy romance about insomnia. The protagonists continue to develop their relationship with one another, and the plot (such as it is) is not hindered by awkward writing or unexplainable events. The dialog is enjoyable and realistic between all the characters. This is the perfect manga for anyone wanting a simple little love story.
Adorable continuation to a fun story about what happens when two insomniacs resurrect a school club just so they can get some sleep. True friendships and maybe more are the result
I absolutely loved both the first book and now this, the second. So much so I ran out to buy physical copies of them so I could enjoy the artwork after reading the digital ARCs that were provided by NetGalley for my honest review. I love the subtly beautiful transitions and consistency in the sweet story telling and character development of the main characters. The cute first crushes that follow traditional school days shojo, but mingled with a darker tinge of the realities of insomnia. I’m a big fan of the night sky myself, and I find the artistry beautiful, both in the art and story telling.
Ganta Nakami is now the president of the Astronomy Club. He and Isaki Magari, the other club member, travel out to the countryside to consult with Yui Shiromaru who now runs a video store rather than winning prizes for astronomical photographs. Now the Astronomy Club has a problem. They have to go with the school on an overnight camping trip. Will they be able to get any sleep or will this be a chance to practice photographing the night sky?
Thanks Viz and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this title!
In this second volume of Insomniacs we catch up with our two main characters as they learn more about the astronomy club and how to run it. They meet up with an alumni of the club, Yui Shiromaru, and talk to her about things that they could do as a two person club. She suggests a photography contest and they readily agree. Nakami gets a crash course on how to photograph the night sky from the Yui and starts taking tons of pictures.
This was a really cute volume and I actually learned quite a bit about how to photograph the night sky! I really love this series and I can't wait to see where it goes.
This is a very gentle series. This volume mostly focuses on reviving the astronomy club and actually doing club activities. It's fun to see these characters interact with others around them, but they really shine when they're together in their shared sleepless world.
Teenagers Nakami and Magari have found in one another someone who understands their struggles with insomnia and the perfect place to nap during school hours- the observatory. However, to keep the observatory to themselves, they're forced to operate the newly-reformed astronomy club as a proper club, the only problem is, they know nothing about astronomy. Their club advisor recommends finding an old member of the club to ask for help.
This manga continues to be a sweet, easy-to-read story exploring the typical lives of secondary-aged youths with the added difficulty of their sleep deprivation. It's a well-incorporated element that adds depth to the narrative whilst still maintaining the lighthearted tone; this is especially done by the addition of Yui. The latter half of the volume develops the relationship between Nakami and Magari, which is endearing to see.
It is still a little choppy in places, requiring the audience's full attention to follow the narrative. It references single lines of dialogue from the previous volume to explain events and actions in this one. As such, it's worth reading them consecutively.
An enjoyable addition to vol 1 of this manga. It's a slice of life wholesome read really enjoyed and can't wait to see where the tale goes for these two main characters.
4.5/5
I immediately read this volume right after the first so everything is fresh in my mind.
The art continues to be absolutely beautiful. I love that there’s now more of a focus on actual astronomy and photography. And oh my God!! (I guess this is a spoiler but…) those reflection scenes towards the end?? GORGEOUS
There is decent plot movement in this one. The romance is really getting started, which makes ME happy. I love that you could see the MMC developing a passion that he didn’t know he had. I really like the teacher. She’s a real one and an interesting character. I’m excited to meet more side characters and hopefully have a larger cast in the future.
If anything I just want more cuteness which is hard because this book was 80% cute already. So maybe I just want more? Yeah. I definitely want more. Can’t wait for volume 3!
Another good entry in this chill slice of life manga. This issue sees our protagonists growing closer to realizing their true feelings, meeting a delightful misanthrope and her cat, and a class camping trip that is anything but ideal.
