BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'Hidden Depths' by J.H. Mann.

This book has an intriguing and unique storyline which captivated my attention from the very first page to the last word. It is definitely unlike any book I have ever read and is filled with deceit, lies, suspense, betrayal, redemption, guilt and much more. It is a gripping and suspenseful read that will have you on tenterhooks on several occasions. Mann's fantastic evocative descriptions will have you seeing and feeling everything that Catherine is, shivering in the cold ocean and hearing the waves crashing around you. There was a mix of pacing starting fast, slowing down and then speeding up which I would liken to being on a rollercoaster ride of twists and turns, speeds and twists. My heart went out to Catherine who is our main protagonist and I like the fact that she is likeable and relatable in many ways. The fact that the author either has experience in long distance swimming or has done plenty of research shines through the pages so congratulations Jason! It is one of those books that every time I put it down I was itching to pick it back up again to know what was going to happen next and I ended up devouring it in several hours getting completely lost within its pages. Jason has used the perfect setting for this book as it definitely adds to the atmosphere of the storyline, especially during certain events. I have just returned from a holiday in Cornwall in a forest site not far from a beach and Jason made me feel like I was back there at times. The storyline was realistic which I always prefer as it makes it more enjoyable to read when you can see that it is something that could happen. It was a very compelling read and I am looking forward to reading more books by this author! The different characters I met throughout the book had a mix of personalities with intriguing backgrounds and each one was very compelling. Jason's evocative writing skills really have brought each of these characters to life throughout this book and it really felt as if I was with Catherine throughout feeling and seeing everything that she was. If you are looking for a unique crime thriller filled with suspense that will keep your heart racing throughout then grab your copy of 'Hidden Depths' today!!

Overall a unique, gripping thriller filled with tension and suspense.

What a story! Made me nervous for most of the book. I was in finance so this really hit home. All the office drama also came back to haunt me. Makes me glad I am out of all that.

J.H. Mann won't be the first writer to strike literary gold with a debut novel set in Cornwall. Daphne du Maurier's enduring success started with 'The Loving Spirit' in 1931, and within a decade of publishing 'Mistress Of Mellyn' in 1960 Victoria Holt was selling a million paperbacks a year. And there are certainly glittering literary prizes ahead for J.H. Mann. An apprenticeship in journalism must surely have helped him find the right tropes for a gothic thriller. He also cleverly uses the backdrop of the rugged Cornish cliffs and mist-shrouded moors to notch up the tension as one ordinary woman, Cathy, is forced to use her own wits to survive.
I loved this novel. It is a story to get the heart racing. It is clever, compelling, stylish and emotionally astute.

It is a story of personal survival both in the world of physical Endurance and challenging personal and business life. The characters are well described and the interaction between them belies the sheer personal Endurance both physically, mentally and personally to come.
The atmosphere and description of Cornawall and the sea is well written and gives a clear impression of both time and place. The chapters lead fluidly from to the other leaving one in anticipation of the next.
The story has been well thought out with familiar landmarks cleverly used in the regional descriptions..
It flows with a fluidity that leaves one in anticipation and creates a story beyond what has been written.
