Enjoyable mystery. Maud and her former lady's maid Daisy are the Scottish Ladies' Detective Agency. Together they solve several mysteries.
Lydia Travers did an excellent job narrating.
Thank you to the publishers, author and NetGalley for the free copy of this audio book.
Fun little mystery with some great accents! Decent pacing and twists. The narrator did a great job.
This was a really fun and light hearted story, that I really enjoyed on audio. The variety of Scottish accents that the narrator had was impressive and brought each character to life. I couldn’t put it down (stop listening) and look forward to the next in the series.
A very strong 4 stars.

Maud started the McIntyre Detective Agency with her friend Daisy. They are aspiring Holmes and Watson duo. They were enlisted to prevent a jewel thief that has been stealing from house parties. During the night Maud is woken by a scream from the other room. She finds a guest dead and her jewels stolen. Who in the house party could be a thief and murderer? As Maud leaves the party she can’t help but think the case is not fully resolved. Maud and Daisy are enlisted in two more cases as they start to investigate there is connections between the cases and the house party. Will they be able to solve the cases?
I really enjoyed this book. It was a bit of a slow start and I thought a predictable timeline. Boy was I mistaken! The ending was unexpected I highly recommend if you are fans of Deanna Raybourn and Sherry Thomas. The second book in the series Murder in the Scottish Hills is available now!
I really enjoyed listening to "The Scottish Ladies' Detective Agency" by Lydia Travers. This seems to be the first book in what I assume will be a series. The two key protagonists are Maud McIntyre and her lady’s maid, Daisy, who open a detective agency in Edinburgh at the turn of the 20th century, and as their first case, are hired by the Duchess of Duddington to prevent a jewellery thief from targeting her house party. What was supposed to be a simple case turns into a murder investigation when a house guest turns up dead.
This is an interesting book, with a gentle pace that you could take it with you as a nice holiday read, but be prepared not be to completely blown away by the mystery.
The narration was excellent, although I do wonder if the Scottish accent of the narrator will make it difficult for the non-native English speakers to understand the book.
A fun little whodunit novel wherein two female detectives try to solve a series of mysterious cases, whilst trying to avoid getting killed in the process. Great fun!

3.75 stars, rounded up
Cute, scottish cozy mystery ties up all loose ends. Vaguely gives me Enola Holmes vibes.
Maud McIntyre is trying to make it on her own in a mans world back in 1911 Edinburgh. When the Duchess of Duddington comes around in search of Mr. McIntyres assistance on a pressing case of stolen jewels. When advised that there is no Mr. McIntyre, the Duchess enlists the help of Maud.
As the case grows and becomes intertwined with two other clients matters, Maud with the help of Daisy (her assistant) find themselves in a very precarious situation.
I enjoyed the storyline and Maud’s thought process throughtout. Very much believed this would be the happenings of an up and coming female detective of this time. Also enjoyed the narrator for this audiobook. Paced perfectly, scottish accent that fit with the story and a smooth tone.
Special thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture Audio for allowing me to listen to an advanced readers copy of this audiobook.
This was a solid start and it has me interested enough that I will check out the next one in the series. This falls squarely into the cozy mystery category. I snapped up the audiobook because I was ready for hours of lovely Scottish accents and I was not disappointed. Helen McAlpine does a great job narrating and giving each character a voice. Overall, the book was good...I just wanted a little bit more from it. The characters could have had a bit more...character, the mystery could have been a bit tighter, the middle sagged a bit in that I kinda forgot what all the different cases had to do with the story. Also, some of the exposition happened in one of my least favorite author tropes which is where the character 'remembers that time when...' Again, I did enjoy the book and I definitely think the groundwork is there for some solid adventures. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
The Scottish Ladies’ detective agency follows Maud and her lady’s maid, Daisy as they take on their first big case going undercover to wheedle out a jewellery thief at a glamorous house in the Scottish highlands. As the investigation unfolds Maud and Daisy realise that they are not only hunting for precious gems but also a murderer!!
The Scottish Ladies Detective Agency was the perfect historical murder mystery to cosy up with and get lost in after a long day. The story was effortless to read enhanced by the fabulous narration of the audiobook. I loved the Scottish setting and the array of characters. The story had some intrigue and a few great little twists, I did find that the focus seemed to still shift to the theft rather than the bigger crime of a murder which seemed odd but didn’t distract from my overall enjoyment of the story. I loved Maud and Daisy as the main characters, they had a great friendship and I enjoyed their humour and intelligence.
Overall this was a great start to a new murder mystery series and I cannot wait to continue with Maud & Daisy’s adventures.
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and Bookouture Audio for allowing me to access this brilliant story via the audiobook.
A delightful book!
It was such an unexpected gem. I didn't ready the first book in the series but none the less was my enjoyment of this book.
The main characters are intelligent interesting women in a new career that is unheard of for women. The fact that they are never assumed to be actual detectives works to their advantage. Both Maud and Daisy use their femaleness as an invisibility cloak to gather information their male peers could never.
It was a smart story with a colourful amount of side characters to kerp the reader interested and ready to solve the next chapter, alongside our determined heroines.
I will be watching for more in this series in the future.
I was looking for another mystery series to love, but apparently it's not this book.
The story didn't keep my interest. The beginning is boring, and the mystery didn't feel too high stakes or is it just the characters? The characters are also not that intriguing.
I guess this is one of those books that some people might like, though not everyone.
This is a start to a new Cozy Mystery series, and I believe it is going to be fun! The beginning of this first book is a little slow to get started but I believe is perfect for setting up the series.
Once you get these 2 ladies up and running their own agency, which is such a delight in 1911, this mystery shifts to not only a jewelry thief, a dog kidnapper, a missing girl, and a murderer!!
I love the narration it really brought the boom to life as I completely enjoyed the way the chat were brought to life.
If you like cozy’s, strong creative women, historical fiction, some laughter and a lot of investigating in this town, grab this book. If you want to elevate your experience with a great narrator who adds a Scottish accent, grab the audiobook!

Really enjoyed this cosy whodoneit mystery. I actually would really love to see this as a movie or mini series.
Already pre ordered the second book from Amazon
I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the audio version. I really enjoyed this novel a lot. I loved the time period and the descriptions of the castle and ground made me feel like I was there.
I hope this is the first book in a new series because I truly enjoyed the story and would love to spend more time with these scrappy women!
In a time when women still did not have the vote and suffragettes were hard at work to gain equal standing with men, Maud McIntyre decided to open her own detective agency with her ladies maid, Daisy, serving as her associate. Little did they know that their first three cases, the searches for a runaway bride, a lost dog, and a jewel thief, would almost cost them their lives!
It's a fun, cozy historical mystery where the heroine's tactics come as much from her love of reading mystery novels as from common sense.
I'd certainly love to read another story featuring Maud and Daisy!

This novel falls definitively into the "historical cozy crime" genre and I loved it! Set in Scotland in 1911, Maud McIntyre has set up her own detective agency - much to the disgust of many men who believe she should be content to be cared for by her husband or father. Maud is sassy and determined, and a likeable, forthright woman.
The story weaves its way between the agency's very first cases, winding them together in a subtle and clever way. With a few nods to the great Sherlock Holmes, Maud and her assistant Daisy take on their cases, although never imagine that a jewellery theft will have them solving murders too!
It already has a second book in the works and I am very much looking forward to it!

This is a cozy, historical mystery set in Edinburgh. Normally that would be right up my ally. However, I was put off by several fat-phobic comments that the FMC makes at the beginning (her dress sleeves were too tight and her fat was showing comments). I couldn't come back around to liking the character after that. For seeing herself as being a female Sherlock Holmes, Maud is incredibly unobservant and takes forever to pick up the bad vibes form the villain.
I did really like the narrating. I thought her accents were lovely.

✨RATING: 2⭐️
✨REVIEW: Sadly… I literally fell asleep listening to this one in the middle of the day. The voice was soothing and calm, but apparently too calm for a mystery in my eyes. Had to low rate this one because of that. Though the ending did give it a nice bow wrap up so that’s why it got 2⭐️ if you like low action mystery, then this is for you! But I’m looking for more action and jaw dropping than this personally.
A who-done-it historical cozy mystery series set just after the turn of the century, the 20th century that is. I haven't read many historical cozy mysteries and was intrigued by how Lydia Travers portrayed the time period. Her main character was a woman of upper-class birth, yet she feels strongly that a woman should make her own way in the world and not rely on her father or a husband to secure her future. The author also includes social issues linked to the period, including the Scottish government’s response to the Women’s Suffrage Movement. The heroine gets herself in several situations that just made me smile. I am reviewing the audiobook and the narrator, Helen McAlpine, was fantastic. Her Scottish accent was wonderful, and she brought Maud and Daisy vividly to life. I was also impressed with her voicing of the book's other characters and found her comic timing spot-on. She was a definitely value add to this experience.
Maud McIntyre has decided she wants a career of her own, so she has set up a Detective Agency. Her lady's maid, Daisy, acts as her assistant in this endeavor. In 1911 Edinburgh, Scotland Maud envisioned helping ladies of quality find missing things. When a mysterious gentleman enters her office, he is not impressed to find a woman in charge and declines to do business with her. Her first case does indeed come from a lady of quality, the Dutchess of Duddington, and the case is to protect her house party from being robbed. Maud and Daisy go undercover and foil the robbery, but one of the guests is murdered and the identity of the perpetrator is in question.
Back in Edinburgh, Maud receives more cases to solve, and the mysterious gentleman relents and hires her too, but he wants to "help" her solve the case. As Maud digs into her new cases, the trail leads back to Duddington House and the jewel thief and murderer.
My thanks to the Publisher and the Author for providing a complimentary audio Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.
The Scottish Ladies' Detective Agency by Lydia Travers is a historical cozy mystery book set in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1911. The story follows Maud McIntyre and her lady's maid, Daisy, as they start their own private detective agency and take on their first case, which involves going undercover at a weekend party in the Scottish Highlands to catch a notorious jewelry thief. However, when one of the guests is found murdered, Maud and Daisy find themselves also investigating a murder mystery.
The book's first half has some minor issues, such as repetitive descriptions and artificial dialogue, but the second half is more engaging and enjoyable.
What I also like about this book is it's engaging main characters, Maud and Daisy. I appreciate Maud's development as a detective throughout the book and I look forward to reading the next books in this series.
Overall, The Scottish Ladies' Detective Agency is a promising start to a series because of its intriguing plot. I recommend the book, especially for those who enjoy historical cozy mysteries with female detectives.
