I loved the Fourth ing audiobook though I haven't listened to any other audiobooks by Rebecca Soler. She does so well at becoming the character and showing emotion through her voice.
The section where Violet was stuttering is one of my favourite parts, she did it so well. I also really enjoyed the final chapters when the narrator changed. I think this was very effective and fitting to the story.
I often speed up the audio to 2.0 and it was still very easy to understand the narrator. The battle scenes and the intensity was portrayed really well through her voice.
Fourth Wing follows Violet who has been training to join the scribe quadrant. but her cruel, cold General of a mother has decided she will join the hundreds on a perilous journey, striving to become Dragon riders.
Violet has suffered all her life with chronic pain and weakened bones so she is immediately seen as weaker and very likely to fail.. and that means death. But what happens when you have the intelligence of a scribe and the determination to be what others think you can't? There is of course big, beautiful, sarcastic dragons and big, brooding men!
It is full of the tropes so if you love enemies to lovers, mis-communication, touch her and you'll die .. with spice then this is going to be your not-so-guilty pleasure! This is very much only the beginning of this adventure and the book leaves you wanting more!
Loved this book, looking forward to the special editions that are being released and the anticipation for book two is real. Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
"Pure exhilaration!" Violet says it on dragonback, but it's a perfect description of this book!
I definitely feel at a lack for words. This story is nonstop action from chapter one, and it doesn't let up, even at the end.
I adore Violet, her stubborn attitude and commitment to her found family. I dislike her mom so much, and I heartily endorse the obligatory YA love triangle!
The world building owes to McCaffrey and her dragons, but certainly takes strides in its own direction. Think all the best parts of Hunger Games.
I cannot wait to get my hands on the physical copy (I know people had issues with this narrator, but it didn't remove me from the tale being told.)
Wow, I honestly don’t even think I know how to feel about this audiobook: it was one of a kind, and I really enjoyed it!
🌩️Synopsis🌩️
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.
But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.
With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.
She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.

I will preface this review by saying I absolutely adored this book. I highly recommend Fourth Wing romantasy lovers, especially if you enjoy the likes of Sarah J. Maas or Jennifer L. Armentrout. Slow burn romance, excellent world building, likable characters, and unbearable heartbreak–although this is a beast of a book, you will fly through the chapters. It’s going to be a painful wait for book number two in the Empyrean series.
There were aspects of Fourth Wing that were semi-predictable, but it won’t stop me from reading it again….and again….and again. I can’t wait to get my hands on a physical copy.
The romance was literally snail speed, but when it happens–whooooooa. “I wish someone made ME shatter windows.” I appreciated that this was a romantasy with spice, but sex wasn’t the primary focus, and didn’t interfere with world-building.
Rebecca Soler is not my preferred narrator, and her character impersonations were inconsistent, as were some of her pronunciations. The description also promised Teddy Hamilton as a co-narrator, but he was heartbreakingly absent until 98% into the book. Perhaps book 2 will be dual narrative?
Thank you NetGalley and Recorded Books for the advanced copy of the Fourth Wing audio adaption.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Let’s be honest - you had me at DRAGONS…and I love a well written fast paced fantasy book - and that is exactly what Fourth Wing is; fast pace, immediately engaging while bringing you into a world that is truly fantastic.
Violet, a clever self deprecating MC is a star.
I really loved the chronic pain representation. At one point she really shows just how strong you have to be when you are always in pain (something I can truly relate to), and how able bodied people sometimes take that for granted. I loved that she found her place in this book, despite not initially thinking she belonged in the environment that she was thrown into.
There is a good amount of romance too; enemy to lover trope with some good spice too! Tasteful and well written.
The real win are the written action scenes especially at the end of the book; will have you at the edge of your seat!
Overall a really enjoyable story and I cannot wait until book 2! If you can listen to the audio I would highly recommend it!
Thank you to RB Media, Recorded Books & NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this book
Oh gosh, where’s book 2? WHERE? This book is really incredible and it kept me intrigued for the whole time. It gave me The Poppy War vibes plus romance and dragons and I would say I couldn’t ask for more… ah right, even the cliffhanger 🙈. Violet should be a Scribe but her mother forces her to become a Dragon rider, which is a much more dangerous path. She is very scared but she is incredibly tenacious and she ends up being considered one of the best. The thing I love about romance like this is that the main character could live without the other person, but their connection is so strong that they want to stay together because they are stronger this way. Xaden is enigmatic, a bit grumpy but very very honorable. He always pushes Violet to give her best and never underestimate her, on the contrary her so called friend Dane always sees her as weak.. honestly he is the only character that really annoyed me even if I can understand that you want to keep the people you love as safe as possible. The worldbuilding is very interesting and since Violet should have been a scribe she knows many things and she explains it to the reader perfectly! Besides the connection she makes with her dragon(..) is incredibly sweet!
The audiobook is good even if sometimes I had the impression the voice the narrator made didn’t match the person that was speaking, like mixing up male and female voices.
Now, I guess, I just have to wait!
Thank you to @netgalley @rbmed_ and @rebeccayarros for an advanced audiobook of Fourth Wing!
Narrated by @rebeccasoler1 and @narratedbyteddyhamilton
The greatest adult fantasy book release of the year! The audiobook narration was perfect from start to finish. The narrators were a perfect fit for the characters. Fourth Wing is fast-paced, intense, and absolutely epic with the most beautifully written slow burn enemies to lovers romance I have read in a long time. I am going to be thinking about the events that took place in this world for a long time.
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros is a fantasy romance that follows Violet Sorrengail, a young woman who was supposed to live a quiet life being trained in the Scribe Quadrant. But her mother has other plans. Forced to the dangerous dragon riders instead, Violet has to learn quickly in a world she has not been trained to enter.
This is was such a fun book! It combines so many things I enjoy about fantasy while having some romantic tension that you can feel! I love a battle school setting and having tons of dragons added to it really made this book something unique. The main character, Violet, is very well developed and I think her decisions and thought processes never seemed out of character.
The romance element starts slow and builds up through the book. I think the way this is written, you can tell Yarros has a background in writing romance books. Just the way Violet thinks about the love interests is a lot like you would read in a romance book. At first, it through me off a little because I’m not used to being in a fantasy character’s mind while they are thinking how hot someone is but it ends up working well overall.
I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys fantasy romance and fast paced, high stakes fantasy. This book mixes the two sub genres very well. I cannot wait for the sequel coming out later this year!
A heroine with sass and a dragon with a 'tude
This story does not toy around. We're immediately getting thrown into Violet's life, where she gets pushed into a career as a dragon rider instead of a scribe. A life she does not think herself equipped for, but that's not gonna be the only surprise in her life.
With her family of overachievers and her chronic illness, Violet doesn't see herself as a warrior at all. But this girl can fight for her life - literally.
Her days at the war academy challenge her to be creative and strong - and the fact that the Wingleader is incredibly handsome is not exactly helping with her focus. All the while in the background really dark and secret things are going on that will change her life.
I devoured the book, even though once Violet and Xadan get steamy, the book focuses too long on the spice for my taste. I'd rather have had more of her dragon's sarcasm. But everything else is a wild ride in a leather dragon saddle without straps.
Rebecca Soler narrates us breathlessly through this breathtaking narrative, which is very fitting. What kind of got to me is that she might have had a nasty cold at the time and she struggles to get through some sentences in the first part of the audiobook. However, I assume this will be levelled out in the final version and it didn't take away from the fun of listening to her.
Only at the very last part the narration switches to Teddy Hamilton, along with a change of POV. Which prepares us for the mean cliffhanger that made me yell out with excitement.
4,5/5 stars
Thank you so much @netgalley and RB Media for the eARC!
Wooowowowow how do I even put my thoughts into words at this point after that last 15% brought my mind through a tilt-a-whirl ride. THIS is why I love fantasy books. Dragons✔️Creative world building + magic system ✔️ A MC that you are sure to fall in love with ✔️ and speaking of love we can’t not forget about the amazing slow burn that’s accomplished throughout the whole book that’s amazinggg ✔️ And lastly, plot twists and high stakes that keep you on your toes and expecting consequences at every turn ✔️ Every time I thought I was predicting what was happening I was either way off on timing for the reveal or way off on what I even could imagine was going on.
The pacing in this book was so consistent and I applaud Yarros for not ending the book on a predictable plot twist because there were at least 3 near the last 100 pages that I was anticipating to be the last page as a cliff hanger but nooooo. Yarros then throws in a plot twist I never saw coming and said ✨goodbye✨ for X amount of time until book 2 and I’ll be damned if I don’t feel like I’d sell my soul to get my hands on an arc for it.
Well I’ve officially found my new favorite fantasy series. This book seriously deserves ALL of the stars. The perfect enemies to lovers slow burn in a new world filled with magic and dragons. What more could you want? I could not put this book down and I am absolutely dying for the next one.
I adore Violet with every fiber of my being. Her wit, kindness, ability to see past judgements and build friendships even with everything that’s holding her back. She has such strength through everything all while also battling a chronic illness. She is just a joy of a rider.
Xaden. That poor tortured soul of a man. My heart bleeds for all that he has been through and for all that he fights for. I was thrilled that we got the last chapter from his POV and I hope we hear more from him in the next book.
The narration in the audiobook is fantastic. I hope I can listen to all of these books. It had me wanting to do projects around the house just so I could keep listening.
A huge thank you to NetGalley and RB Media for an advanced copy of this audiobook. All thoughts are my own.
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
Genre- Adult Fantasy, Book 1 of a debut fantasy series.
A scholar turned dragon rider, Violet Sorrengail, is ordered by her mother, the commanding general, to enter into riding school. Violet suffers from an illness that makes her bones brittle and she is smaller and weaker than the rest of her peers. Violet needs to work twice as hard and keep her wits as she fights to survive and earn a place among the dragon riders.
This book was phenomenal!
It has been so long since I have been completely swept away in a fantasy book and I loved every minute spent in this fast paced fantasy! I listened to the audio and it was pretty good. A few things about the narrator bothered me, but I got over it when my heart started pounding and I had to keep listening and didn't care who was reading. I just couldn't stop listening.
I loved how the history and worldbuilding weaved throughout this story and managed to give me all the information I needed without info dumping. And as an avid fantasy reader, I appreciate this so much.
The romance was nearly perfect for me. Enemies to lovers with an angsty slow burn to an explosive (literally) love affair!
There were twists and turns, betrayal and scary but lovable dragons. What else can I say, except I need the sequel asap!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice🌶🌶, open door
Changed my rating to 5 full stars bc days later and I’m still thinking about this book.
This book is immediately engaging, bringing you into the world and weaving worldbuilding easily into the story without feeling like the info dump you often get in fantasy books. Pacing was great, and I felt constantly compelled to listen to find out what was going to happen next.
We follow Violet, our FMC, who's clever and self-deprecating POV kept me invested. I really loved the chronic pain representation. At one point she really shows just how strong you have to be when you are always in pain, and how able bodied people sometimes take that for granted. I loved that she found her place in this book, despite not initially thinking she belonged in the environment that she was thrown into.
I loved the romance part of this book as well. I am a sucker for enemies to lovers, so as soon as our MMC was introduced I had fingers crossed that this was that trope and I was not disappointed. There's some good spice, too-- definitely more than I expected but I was not complaining.
The action in this book was incredible, there is a sequence towards the end that had me on the edge of my seat and it was very easy to follow.
Overall, I really loved this book. There were some things that felt very YA, which this book is definitely not, but I also wonder if that was due to the narrator (who I didn't love). The narrator was a smidge inconsistent with her voices for characters and there were a few times where I had to rewind to figure out who said something.
Thank you to Netgalley and RB Media for this audiobook ARC! I'll definitely be purchasing a copy of this book for my bookshelf!
The best book I've read this year! (Hint; Enemies to lovers and dragons)
Fourth Wing is an incredible fantasy book that focuses on an academy that trains dragon riders, and the war the continues to ravage their world. I loved listening to the relationship between Violet and Xaden develop from enemies to something more. Xaden is one of the most ruthless wing leaders, and has multiple reasons to want to murder Violet, but also has an incredible weight on his shoulders from the deals he has made to help his people. The relationship between these two was entertaining, and made me laugh multiple times.
Violet is forced into the Dragon riding academy by her mother who sees all other options as failure. It was amazing to see a female main character who dealt with chronic pain, and used different aids to help her, instead of her "magically" healing from these conditions. Throughout Fourth Wing you see Violet continue to grow and develop into an amazing dragon rider, while supporting her friends, and her quadrant during different tasks and challenges.
This book is heavy on the violence and death, and some scenes will make your heart ache for the characters and all they have lost. The battle scenes are well written, and the narrator kept be on my toes listening to them. The author also added some well written steamy scenes, that nicely counters the violence.
I thoroughly enjoyed the narrators in this audiobooks, during the high intense action scenes the narrator helped to completely draw you into the scene, bringing it to life. There was some off pauses, and the voice changed a couple times that I didn't; completely follow, but overall the audiobooks was amazing.
If you are looking for a book that mixes the Hungers Games and Dragon, I would recommend this for you!
Thank you to NetGalley and RB Media for this Audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
4.5 out of 5 Stars Rounded Up To 5
This better than I expected it would be so I'll definitely be continuing the series as more books are released.
Dragons, adventure, slow burn romance, plot, spice and a cliff hanger ending. Who could want more!
Violet, Daughter of the commanding general, has trained all her life to be a scribe like her father. While her 2 siblings followed their mothers footsteps. Last minute choices are made and she is now in the riders quadrant and now faces many new challenges. Mostly just to stay alive.
Not only in the plot fantastic, there is romance, but also great character growth.
I was ecstatic to receive an ARC from Netgalley. I really enjoyed listening to the Audiobook version.
I loved this book so much! I wanted to simultaneously read faster but also slow it down and stay! It is bumping right to the favorite list!
Can I give this 1000 stars? Seriously, talk about a bingeworthy read.
One of my biggest pet peeves in fantasy is when modern language is used when it’s very clearly not a modern world. It just feels so lazy to me. I mean obviously this book isn’t based in reality, but these people are out here using quills and pots of ink for chrissakes. This book also didn’t reinvent the wheel, using common tropes that fantasy readers are very familiar with and can’t escape. Like nothing in this book surprised me at all. WITH THAT SAID, I was so absolutely engrossed in this book that I didn’t even care. It’s so good! I was grinning like an idiot almost the whole time. I mean, a magical military school where people are dropping like flies and the goal is to bond with a dragon to acquire magic and become a dragon rider? And don’t even get me started on how amazing the dragons are and the way the bond with them works. The world Yarros created is fun, scary, and entirely thrilling. Violet was a great character and I loved the chronic pain rep. She had excellent growth throughout the book and I can’t wait to see how that progresses in the next book.
I already know this is going to be a hit in the fantasy community. I will be highly recommending this to all readers of the genre.
Narrator: I liked her for the most part but I do think there could’ve been improvement on the inflection for different voices.
I received the audiobook as an ARC on NetGalley.
I loved this book! Full of action, romance, and found family. Perfect for fans of The Hunger Games and Divergent books.
The dragon/rider bonds were full of sarcasm and sassiness that had me wishing we could hear more of the telepathic dialogue outside of just the main character. The end of this book had me on the edge of my seat. How long do I have to wait to read more of this interesting world?!! I want to dive head first into more!
This is the most fun I've had reading a book in a long time.
The Fourth Wing follows Violet, who always planned to be a scribe, until her mother, the commanding general, orders her to enter the elite dragon riders. As Violet worries that she won't be bonded to a dragon, she also begins to suspect that their leaders are hiding something.
This is a very fun NA Fantasy Romance book. I really liked our main character and all of the side characters. The plot was easy to follow and the romance had me smiling and giggling the entire time.
Violet has a chronic illness and as someone who has a chronic illness, I found her very relatable. I loved how she didn't let it stop her, but she was also aware of her limits and works within them. Several times during the story, other characters tried to coddle her and stop her from doing things, and I loved how she didn't put up with it.
I absolutely loved this book and would definitely recommend it.
