A must read ! The pages fly. Truly an unputdownable, quick read! I was up until the wee hours reading- totally consumed with how the story was going to play out.
I look forward to reading more by Lauren North.
Thank You to NetGalley, Bookouture and Lauren North for the opportunity to devour this ARC.
A taut domestic thriller with themes of coercive control and domestic violence. Lots of plot twists and revelations to keep you guessing right up until the very last page. Lauren North has written another psychological thriller which will keep you hooked.
This one was full of twists and turns. It’ll keep you guessing ‘till the very end and has you asking the question - who is the real villain?
My main problem with this book is that none of the characters were likeable. I didn’t really care what happened to anyone and that made it hard to keep reading.
Having said that, the author does a good job of challenging our expectations. You start off liking someone, only to slowly discover their flaws and problems. By the end, you’re no longer sure what you want to happen and who you want to see punished. All you know is that the cycle of violence will continue.
The twists and turns in this were well paced and kept you guessing. It kept me on my toes and you have to question everything you’re told. All in all, a good thriller.
Truly gripping read with so many twists and turns you won't know who or what to believe! Very cleverly constructed and well laid out. A propulsive read that will keep your interest all the way to the end!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC!
Oh. My. GOODNESS!!!
Now I wont lie to you, for the start of this book I wasn’t entirely sure I was going to enjoy this anywhere near as much as I have! We follow Celia, a mother to one son named Henry aged 5. Living a seemingly perfect life with her husband Martin, working in a school as an advisor who helps Lucie a 13 year old student from an unstable home work toward her hopes & dreams for when she eventually leaves school. Celia & Lucie form an incredibly close bond & Celia becomes a safe space for Lucie when she needs her the most… Or is she??? That there there is where I’ll leave you! 👀 When I tell you I’ve NEVER second , third, fifth, TENTH guessed myself before I mean it! This book had my jaw dropping throughout every chapter and the ending!!y! Oh my goodness I didn’t see that coming in a million years!! Lauren does an amazing job of making you doubt yourself & every character we come to meet throughout the book & having you cheer for the characters you absolutely shouldn’t be trusting! I really enjoyed my word against his & have recommended it to friends and family for when it’s officially released.
Enjoyed it. The story completely turned into something I wasn't expecting when the police opened the trunk. I was pretty shocked at what was inside. Throughout the whole book I wasn't sure what to believe about Celia and her husband. Which one of them was abusive? Which one put the locks on the door? Celia was extremely controlling. Everyone had to wear specific clothes on each day of the week. The same food was prepared every week. Everything had to be done at specific times of the day. I really didn't care for Celia until the very end. Then I felt bad for her, but then I remembered she could have prevented this if she just would have told the truth. Sam and Lucie were the true victims. Sam picked the wrong car to get into, he didn't realize the driver was a crazy woman. Lucie just wanted to help people. Unfortunately, she picked the wrong family to help. There were definitely twists and turns that were unexpected. The secret that Celia reveals to Lucie in the car park was one of them. It sort of seemed out of the blue. The ending was sad. Celia ended up with the life she tried so hard to get out of. Not sure how the police didn't see through all the lies.
Definitely recommend the book. It was a good mystery/thriller that kept me guessing until the end. Look forward to reading more books by the author.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bookouture through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
So sorry, but I read the first six chapters and could not get into this. The story did not captivate me and I was lost on why I should be interested in any of the characters without them being built up and immediately doing flashbacks.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thirteen years ago, Lucie was like a daughter to Celia, spending hours with her son, Henri, as a family. One night, Lucie discovers a secret about Celia's husband, Martin, that scares her away from the family for years. That is until one unexpected phone call to Celia saying it is a matter of life and death sends Lucie crashing back into their lives, unraveling long buried secrets in her wake. While her mind is on the mysterious call Celia is carjacked at knife point and forced to drive the kidnapper hours away, making her unable to help Lucie. Spotting her chance to escape she crashes the car sending her and her capture head long into an intense police investigation, but who is telling the truth?
Lauren North does a fantastic job of creating a twisty suspense that leaves the reader guessing whose word to believe? The chapters are short and told from multiple perspectives alternating between present day and past interactions with cryptic messages ending each one. I loved the addition of other characters perspectives later in the book. The characters are not that likable which adds to the drama of the story. This one kept me guessing to the end with a few twists that I could see coming and others that revealed themselves at the end. Overall this is a great mystery.
Oh this book is very, very good. It has a great storyline that will keep you gripped all the way through. I really enjoyed the twists and turns in this storyline and if you like physcological thrillers don't miss this one.
“My Word Against His” by Lauren North was a twisty turning story that you can’t help but get sucked into. This story was well written and gives you a great picture of the characters.
Celia is a wife and mother who wants the best for her family. Lucie is a girl who seems lost when Celia meets her. Celia welcomed Lucie into her family but something pulls them apart. 13 years later Lucie comes back into Celia’s life, but is it the reunion they deserve?
This story grabs you from the first page. There were so many twists that you never know what is coming. Highly recommend.
Review: This was a fast-paced entertaining read. Lots of twists and turns. Simple and complex events in one story made it fun to read.
Recommended For: Thriller fans who like nutty characters.
So many unreliable narrators in this. And the plot is superb.,
Lauren has done it again. Celia, Henry. Lucie all with their own interpretation of events and what transpired.
It’s a five star read for sure.

I’ve read books from this author before and enjoyed them but I can’t say this is my favourite. It was a bit slow and it did have a twist but not enough to get me excited. Having said that it is worth a read but only 4 stars from me this time
When Lucie contacts Celia after a 13 year absence and asks to meet up it sets up a chain of events that have Celia remembering lies and secrets she would've preferred kept secret.
For a few moments after the meet, Celia finds herself kidnapped by Sam and told to drive. Later, lying injured with Sam making a run for freedom Celia realises she has to make a decision to save herself, after all Sam is the criminal isn't he?
This was a cracking read, it's written in such a way that you doubt yourself each time you have suspicions about where its going. With multiple points of view but sometimes not always reliable it's a real page turner. Each character has secrets but who's telling the truth.
I received this advanced copy from Netgalley and Bookouture but am under no obligation to leave my review
I couldn't put this down. There was so much suspense, and a twist nearly every chapter. I had no idea what was really going on until the end.
My Word Against His by Lauren North kept me engaged from beginning to end, the plot was well thought out and the characters were very well written, full of intrigue and a wild plot twist. Her characters are so well fleshed out, you feel as if you can see and feel them.
The author has carefully constructed a tangled web of secrets and deception that are so intricately woven and, by revealing just enough along the way, keeping the reader invested.
I found the book was full of great descriptions and it really helps you feel like you are there.
Lauren North is a fantastic author and My Word Against His is a gripping story.

Thank You NetGalley and Bookouture for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to review an ARC of this novel.
When Celia receives a call from someone in her past after 13 years, time begins to close in as she tries to hide her truth and keep her family safe.
This book had me gripped from the first chapter. I read this in just a few hours and I couldn't put it down. The constant twists and turns just keep on coming and you find yourself so absorbed in finding out the truth behind the lies.
The novel is well written and I think that Lauren North shows promise of being a fantastic thriller writer to watch out for over the coming years. I will definitely be watching out for future releases.
Absolutely loved this and I can't wait to recommend it to people when it's published!
My Word Against His is one of those books that you are super confused until suddenly everything makes sense. There are so many twists and turns that you don’t expect! Every single chapter is packed with action. Be prepared to not want to put this book down!! As for the ending… plot twist! This book is fast paced and multiple POV.
Locks on the pantry for waist control and on interior doors for… what? A compulsive mother and student advisor who needs to be needed. An obedient son. A neglected girl who finds her advisor’s attention too compelling to resist. Then there is a disappearance and a murder and a hitchhiker turned kidnapper. So, what is going on? That is the complex array of problems that this suspense novelist, Lauren North, hopes will hook readers. The pacing is a bit weighted, and careful readers can poke Swiss cheese holes in one coverup, but the characters are oddly fascinating, and the book offers stakes that keep things going. It’s worth a read.
This book will be released on May 26, 2023
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for providing this eARC.
It's going to be really hard to write about My Word Against His without spoilers. It's so cleverly plotted and there are so many twists and turns that I was completely gripped from beginning to end, wanting to know what would happen next.
I love an unreliable narrator and in Celia, Sam and Lucie, we have three! Celia definitely has secrets I'm sure she'd rather we didn't find out, Sam has a history of criminal behaviour and Lucie isn't sure if she remembered everything the way it actually happened. But hearing from the perspective of each one helped me to piece the story together and try and make my own guesses about what had happened. Not everyone is likeable and the atmosphere is often uncomfortable but the characters are well rounded and I did feel involved in their lives.
I wasn't as shocked by the ending as I might have been, but it does leave me with a few things to think about.
