Loved!! Friends to lovers is one of my favorite tropes and of course gotta love all the missed opportunities! And all the GOT references!
I want to thank @netgalley and @author.juliana.smith for allowing me access to this ARC for exchange of an honest review.
I have to say I totally relate to Luke. He was such a comedian throughout this book and the fact that he got a lot of sayings wrong, thatโs totally me! He was very stubborn as a character and he definitely stood his ground.
I enjoyed the banter between all the characters and thought that Layla was a great, strong FMC. She had a lot of sass about her. She made life about her and made sure she was getting what she knew she deserved - thatโs admirable.
The slow burn was great. You can tell the sexual tension between Luke and Layla was there from the beginning and it was strong. I really enjoyed this friends to lovers aspect of the book and quite a unique dynamic in which is was approached.
The book was very quiet and I found myself smiling like a fool when they had their own little moments with each other. Their love blossomed.
It was a cutesy, slow burn, romantic read.
Another great Juliana Smith read. She has a way of writing characters that you can relate too and her writing makes you feel something.
Luke's character made me laugh so hard with his ability to get sayings wrong everytime. It was something so simple but I will remember those parts forever. I wish he wouldn't have been so stubborn and just told Layla how he felt instead of waiting 3 years but the build up was so good and their friendship was beautifully written.
Layla was so relatable. I loved everything about her character. Her confidence once they got to the conference was by far my favorite. She became herself again and the fact that she started writing again, made me so happy.
Janise was a straight up pain in my rear. Thank you Juliana for writing your "hated" characters so well. Every book I've read of yours always has that one person that makes you want to through your book across the room and that takes talent haha!
Honorable mentions: Luke's entire family. I just LOVED them all. Can't wait for Nathan and Calla's story.
Anyone who is fresh out of college and exhausted from navigating their twenties will relate to this book. Specifically, as someone who has aspirations in publishing and writing like Layla (the protagonist), this novel really spoke to me. Unlike other romance novels with the workplace enemies to friends to lovers trope, Luke immediately lands in the friend zone with the second chapter's flash forward sequence. It was a refreshing change to not have an entire romance novel be the two main characters arguing and having this weird tension in the workplace. Don't get me wrong: it's totally obvious that these two like each other, but they still manage to sustain a healthy and hilarious friendship throughout the novel. This book gives off early 2000s romcom vibes, which I totally love! If you're looking for a light, upbeat romance story set in an office, then this is a stellar read.

Per my last email follows the story of Luke and Layla, two coworkers that develop strong romantic feelings for each other but they are hesitant to act on them due to their close friendship. Despite their mutual attraction, they fear risking the comfort and familiarity they have established. However, with changes in their careers and a newfound sense of spontaneity, they both begin to wonder if now is the time to take a chance on something more. And what better way to explore their feelings than by going on a work trip together and seeing where it takes them?
I usually don't find myself drawn to friends to lovers because, despite the mutual attraction, I crave the intense angst that comes with enemies to lovers. But I have to say, I adored the charming dynamic between Luke and Layla as friends. Their inside jokes and sweet moments were incredibly endearing, and both characters were very likable and relatable.
Even though the progression of their relationship was slow, I never once felt bored or unsatisfied. The soft touches, warm embraces, and meaningful looks between them were extra special because they happened gradually over time.
I had so much fun spotting all the pop culture and book references in the story! They had everything from ACOTAR to Star Wars to Ice Planet Barbarians to Game of Thrones, and I have to admit I was grinning like a fool every time I caught one. In the words of Captain America "I understood that reference!".
The side characters in Layla and Luke's story were delightful additions to their journey. I was particularly moved when his family welcomed Layla as one of their own. I'm eagerly looking forward to reading about Calla's and Nathan's story!
Per my last email comes out May 6th and you should read this if you love:
๐ฉ Friends to lovers
๐ฉ The Office (US), especially Jim and Pam.
๐ฉ Slow burn
๐ฉ Pranks and sarcasm
Thank you Victory Editing, NetGalley and Juliana Smith for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Oh, book friends, I had a hangover from this one! Per my Last Email was a witty, funny, and oh-so-romance (any Bluely fans out there?) friends-to-lover GEM. The fact that this book was my favorite trope, had tons of Star Wars references, AND gave off major Jim and Pam vibes was almost too much good in one book (is that possible!?!) I swooned every time Luke showed he cared for Layla by bringing her small surprises or reading her for what she needed. I adored Laylaโs commitment to be the best friend she could be, because it meant being near Luke. It was also so great to read a closed door romance that was truly slow burn and had me so invested in their relationship. Plus! No third act breakup! And! Follow up months down the road as the last 10% of the book! More? Great side characters who supported and added humor! Just brilliantly done, honestly.
I squealed when I realized this is a first of a series. I cannot wait to keep reading more of Smithโs work. And the fact that my favorite side character, Nathan, is going to be one of the MCโs for the next book? Sign. Me. Up.
Smith has quickly become one of my favorite authors. Please read this and I promise itโll put a smile on your face ๐
such a cute and lighthearted romance!! i loved the friends to lovers and the workplace romance!! i absolutely love juliana as an author and i canโt wait for her future releases!!
A fun and cute read. Were there some cliches? Yes, but I love them so that only made it better for me :D
Thanks for this ARC!
Sadly I just don't think this author is for me :( all her books have such cute premises but I usually have some aspect near the beginning that turns me off unfortunately. Did not finish this one as it just felt like the characters were both falling for each other from page 1 & I wondered how it happened so quickly. I think lots will love these but sadly I think I am just not her audience.
Iโm trying to catch up on all my ARCs and reviews! I am definitely reading much faster than I write a review! You might be lucky enough to get another one tomorrow ๐
So thank you Juliana Smith and her team for sending me this ARC. Over the winter, I actually bought her last novel, so it was exciting to get chosen to read this one. This was a super fun coworkers to friends to lovers romcom. I think it was super fast paced, and overall a cute and quick read! Of course there was a lot of miscommunication, especially when they already liked one another the whole time, but still i liked this story even more than her last one. Overall, I recommend this story if youโre looking for a feel good cute and fast paced rom-com. 3.5โญ๏ธs!
Per My Last Email is aย cute, hilarious, and feel-good friends-to-lovers workplace romance (Dual POV) which will make you giggle and swoon in equal measure. While I am not a huge fan of workplace romances, this one was executed well.
Luke and Layla have been secretly longing for one another every day at their mundane office jobs for quite some time, but they are too afraid to take the leapย and express their love because they don't want to risk their friendship. So, when an office retreat is announced, they get their perfect chance to put their fears aside and do what will truly make them happy.
I adored Luke and Layla's connection. Their friends-to-lovers dynamic was cute and as individuals they were also very likable. I really enjoyed the ending as they discovered what they actually wanted to do instead of their mundane corporate job. With that being said, I also found some moments to be cringey, like him calling her "little one". The plot felt a little vague and just extremely slow. While I enjoy a good slowburn, this just felt a little too dragged. Either way, I would recommend this book if you like closed-door rom-coms!!
Thank you NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
Per My Last Email by Juliana Smith is book 1 in the Wells Family Series. I loved the idea of this book, but I found it difficult to get into. Readers of the romantic genre should like this book. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.
Thank you soooooo much netgalley, the author and the publisher for the advanced review copy if this book๐
"I voluntarily read and reviewed the book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.โ
Amazing gorgeous book
Did not finish, do not feel like I can give an honest review of the plot, characters and story, There was nothing that turned me off from the book, I was just overwhelmed at the time and couldn't give my attention to reviewing the book in time.
Friends to lovers and the 'friend-zone" mindset is never my go to however this puts it a little more into a twist and maybe the workplace setting helps booster this for me.
Layla filled me with laughs and wit, she was an absolute joy to navigate this story with and honestly Luke was a puppy dog. They really do make a good match because of their personalities. We get a snippet of lack of communication in spots but to be fair, I think the hesitancy to just blurt out one's true feelings can become murky and intimidating when you genuinely value a friendship and don't want to potentially lose that.
Overall, we've got a sweet and charming story that plays on tropes that aren't my go to and still had me entertained and nodding along with the lovers of the tropes.
This book checked a lot of my boxes yet after reading it and coming here to write this review I cannot remember much of it. That says a lot to me, this was fine and forgettable.
Juliana Smith has become an author I really like.
This book was good! I am not the biggest fan of the friends to lovers trope so the book wont get a top score for me. Overall it was a cute well executed book!
The slow burn was really good
This was such a fun and sweet friends to lovers story! It is dual POV which provided the perfect opportunity for all the angst to occur! A sweet romance (no spice here) but still so so so good!
This was a cute, light hearted read! It was a feel-good friends to lovers and workplace romance.
It didn't have as much build up / angst that I would have liked in friends to lovers. But overall it was good.
This book does what it says it well - provides plenty of Pam and Jim vibes from The Office, and provides the comedy that I've come to expect from Juliana's books. While there was no third act break up to get annoyed about, the miscommunication and tiptoeing around the real issues between Layla and Luke got to me more than it might have for others. A cute story, with a number of laughs - which if a light rom-com is what you need, this book will do the trick.
