This was a wonderful third edition to this series full of romance, magic and heart. I enjoyed this book very much and can’t wait to read the final book
I skimmed a majority of this book so I don't even know how to review it. I tried so hard the first 75 pages of the book and then I just felt like I had to see it through but didn't really care about the writing style or the character development.
Just finished 'Of Night and Chaos' and it's a mixed bag for me. Jenna Wolfhart takes us back into this magical world with Tessa and Kalen's story, and their romance? It's sweet and has some real chemistry. The lore and world-building are top-notch, and the whole gods and prophecy angle adds a nice touch of mystery.
But, the pacing felt off at times. The first half of the book was a bit slow, especially with the multiple POVs. Don't get me wrong, I love getting into different characters' heads, but it kind of took away from Tessa and Kalen's story, which is what I was really there for. And that cliffhanger? It's huge, leaving me both frustrated and curious.
The action and twists in the latter part are great, though. It’s clear Jenna's setting up something big for the next book, and I'm here for it. So, if you're into fantasy with a bit of romance and don't mind a slow burn, this could be your thing. Just brace yourself for that ending!
Thank you to the author and Netgalley for the arc copy!
I started off really loving this series, but sadly with each book I just lose a bit more of the interest that I initially had. I feel like a lot of the plot can be cut back and the series could move a bit faster. I noticed this with book 2 as well, but in this book, it was even worse. I felt like nothing was happening and I was just quite bored throughout the story. I ended up skim-reading a lot of the book just to see what happened at the end. I don't think I will be continuing on with these books anymore.
I loved the first book in this series so much and I’ve finally caught up to book 3. This book is just as good as the rest of series!
The characters and the plot are exactly what I want out of this series. The multiple POVs really added to this book and got me even more sucked in. I’ll recommend this series to anyone that will listen. THE CLIFFHANGER. I’m SO ready for book 4.
This series is becoming a new favorite of mine! I just love the chemistry relationship between Tessa and Kalen. The world they live in is so unique, and in each book, we learn more and more about it. I did not realize that this wasn’t the last book until I was pretty far in the book, so that major cliffhanger got me! I can’t wait to see what happens next in the series!

Review:
1. Book 3 is the book that sets the stage for what is all going to transpire in the final book. It picks up RIGHT where we last left off in book 2, with Tessa and Kalen in a bit of a cat-and-mouse game after the consequences of Tessa’s actions with King Oberon.
— (Also, shout out to Jenna for always adding a recap of books 1 and 2 at the very beginning. I think all authors should help us out and do this because it’s REALLY helpful, especially if you have the memory of a goldfish like me).
2. In this story, Tessa and Kalen have such an amazing and enjoyable relationship, as well as individual character development, that strengthens their love and bond to one another, AND their own beliefs and confidence in themselves.
I really enjoyed watching Tessa’s personal growth throughout the series, especially this book, and seeing how she overcame certain obstacles to get to where she was by the end of it.
— (Side Note: we all need more men like Kalen in our lives. I LOVE it when the MMCs don’t ever put the FMCs on the sidelines for anything. Whether it be from decision making to taking part in any of the action, that is our man Kalen with Tessa Every. Single. Time!
He always believes in her and her abilities and has his full support in making any contributions and decision-making, as well as taking part and helping out in battle.
He never holds her back (even if he knows she could be in danger) because she has his complete trust, as does he with her, and it's so endearing to see it on that kind of level between two people.
He definitely sets the bar high for all book MMCs. He’s a real one, that’s for sure)!
“Let’s see what you can do, love. Make the stars weep.”
3. There is some spice sprinkled here and there. Although, at times, the way they spoke to one another while doing the deed seemed kind of cliche and cheesy (almost like first-timer, juvenile “sexy” talk where they think they are talking dirty, but really it’s… well… not).
It got a little too love-sick puppy for me, I guess, is what I’m trying to say.
However, their love is so pure and sweet that I could somewhat forgive them for all of that and couldn’t help but say “awww,” or school girl giggle out loud a few times.
4. We get multiple POVs this time, which I know some readers thought it detracted from the storyline, but I didn’t mind it. I could see why people thought that, however, because there were a few parts from the POVs (that weren’t Tessa or Kalen) that did drag a bit and slow it down, but for me, I thought it was really interesting and was able to further build into the world/lore/prophecy building.
5. Unlike the first two books, this one was a tad bit slow at the beginning, and I had a hard time getting into it at first. I kept picking it up and putting it down to read other things for a good couple of days before I was able to keep up with it finally.
Yet once I did, and as the story went on, in classic Jenna Wolfhart fashion, the action gets ramped up from 0 to 60, and once it begins, it doesn’t ever slow down.
6. I’m not going to lie, there were times that I was able to predict a lot of the plot and what was going to happen, but there were still SO MANY big twists and reveals that I didn’t see coming and completely took me by surprise!
I applaud Jenna for the fact that even though some things were predictable, she was still able to keep the thrill of reading the book at a high and consistent level, which (once you got past the first couple of chapters) was such a fast-paced and easy read, where you still enjoyed it regardless.
7. I really hope we get more interactions with the Old Gods in book 4 because there were some nail-biting, on-the-edge-of-your-seat moments whenever they were involved, and I’m going to need MORE of that!
Those kinds of high-tension moments, which were a bit sketch at times, and you didn’t know which way it was gonna go for our protagonists, was what (100 emoji)% leveled up this story for me.
8. Last but not least… WHAT A CLIFFHANGER?!! 🥺
I did have a feeling of what was going to happen when we got to the ending; however, that didn’t make it any less heartwrenching! Like damn, Jenna, you really going to do us like that?
— On the plus side, Jenna Wolfhart has been writing these books so dang fast and spitting these babies out one right after the other.
So, while I will have to sit and wallow in my pain and sadness that was ALL brought on by that emotional wreck of a cliffhanger (thanks, Jenna), I’ll only have to marinate in it for a few more months… *deep breaths* it’s fine, I’m totally fine 😳
— Thank you, Netgalley, Jenna Wolfhart, and Publishers, for sending me an eARC in return for an honest review that is all mine.
I can't wait to pick up the FINAL book in this epic series and see what else Tessa, Kalen, and crew have up their sleeves to kick some Old Gods ass!!
thank you to netgalley for the advanced reading copy of night and chaos. this was great but when i got it i didnt know it was a book three but luckily there was a brush up in the beginning to get myself through.
Oh, this book ends on SUCH a cliffhanger. Thank you #NetGalley for sending me a copy to read!
While it has been a bit since I read Of Ash and Embers, it didn’t take long for me to remember where we left off. This one picks right back up too! I so love when authors do that!! I love Tessa and Kalen, they have this very organic love story.. ugh I just eat it up!
Bellicent though- this one… I know we can’t choose our family and all but lord… she has to be the worst. I mean first you make your son make a vow and you are totally okay with using women as a “vessel” for you to live on and then you do THAT (no spoilers)?!?! I am not sure even that is going to be forgivable in Kalen’s eyes.
There’s a lot that happens in this book that I feel will have a BIG impact on the rest of the story. Without giving too much away- I did NOT see this ending coming. If you have not yet read this series, I would highly recommend it.
I am looking forward to what is coming next for some of my favorite humans, Mist King, and Mist Guards!
Of Night and Chaos - The Mist King #3 - Review
Couple: Tessa & Kalen
Author: Jenna Wolfhart
Tropes: enemy to lover, mistaken identity, hidden prophecy, fae romance, PNR, high fantasy
Review: Ahhh! Book 3 heats up!! This book sets the stage for the final parts of the series. The book is multiple POV but mainly from Tessa and Kalen’s.
This book settles the score between Kalen and Tessa in regards to Kalen’s unbreakable vow he made to his mother. We also learn a ton about Kalen’s past. This book will tug on your heart strings since you learn just how rough Kalen’s past was and how much it shaped into who he is today. We also learn more about Tessa and her past. We finally get the answers about her parentage and every evil deed her father put her through. The emergence of her powers and memories is a pivotal point in this book and starts the cascade of events that brings a huge cliffhanger at the end.
Jenna amps up the spice in this book and we see how much Tessa and Kalen are drawn to each other. I enjoyed their relationship a lot in this book because both become more communicative and loyal to one another. Learning that the fates played a role in their binding is also something that I wasn’t all that shocked over. However, I am curious if Tessa will actually be immortal.
What really brings this book to head is Niamh and the crew traveling to the old human kingdom and learning about the lore of the “old gods”. The answers we get from those few chapters explain so many of the plots that took place and also begins to unravel the secrets Kalen’s mother kept. I thought the way each character tied into one another and the depth of the plots really drew intrigue and mystery to the story.
I am anxious for the next book and cannot wait to see what Tessa does to the kingdom of the old gods.
Rating: 9/10, the ending…..I need more!
“I will always come to your dreams when you call.”
Swooooooon. Gosh this whole book had me right in the feels. The relationship development was paced so well and felt so genuine. The spice! The perfect slow build and then explosion of tension.
The world building was phenomenal and that ending… my goodness. I WAS SHOOK. I am terrified but also have so much faith in Jenna, she’s going to take us on one hell of a ride and I can’t wait.
Do you ever do dumb things? Like not realize a book is the third in the series? *picture of me* Guess i'm going to have to read 1&2 now.
I was given an Arc copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I need to start by saying I absolutely love this series! It’s one of my favorites! However I felt like this one just kept dragging on for the first half!
But for some positives…I absolutely adore Kalen and Tess’ relationship especially in this one. I also really loved the multiple POV especially with a few side characters. I felt like it really kept up with everyone since everyone was kind of split up for a while!
This book was really a build up for the next book and I absolutely can’t wait to see where she takes all these characters!
Wow now that’s how you write a fantasy book ! Tense, exciting, sweet too but most of all easy to just sink into this world the author has created. Tessa has been tested so many ways and is totally pulled in so many directions in this book. Her love, her devotion and indeed her very existence all play a part here. I think particularly in this book we get to see the true Fae side of Kalen with a lusty appetite for the woman who completely owns him heart and soul. Plus there are points of view from supporting characters which really pulls the reader further in. Reader beware though as that ending will leave you gnashing your teeth and desperate for more !
This voluntary take is of a copy that I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
I had been patiently waiting for this book, and that cliffhanger!! Now I’m patiently awaiting for the next one.
First thing, I love the recaps the author does. When you read as much as I do, it’s so helpful to have a little reminder of small pieces of plot you might have forgotten. I was able to dive straight back into this world without having to remind myself along the way why certain things were important.
I loved every character in this book, and really enjoyed getting to know their back stories. Tessa’s development in this was amazing and Kalen standing back and letting her shine made my heart ache. They are such a well written couple and I love them.
The plot is so intricate but as the reader you never get lost in it. It’s all so well written that it feels almost real.
I can’t recommend this series enough.
I need to thank netgalley for this book. I did not realize when I requested it that it was book 3 so I had to read books 1 and 2 first.
I'm so glad I did. This is a series that if you love enemies to lovers, found family and fated mates you will love this book.
Meeting Tessa in book one, she was strong and defiant. She pushed back at everyone who tried to use her. This Continued onto book 3.
I love the way the characters are all flawed in their own way. Stubborn, quick to anger and full off themselves and I loved each one of them.
It ends on a cliffhanger and I cannot wait for book 3
I have loved this series so much and have been so excited to read this I devoured this and couldn't put it down I loved it so much
I am enthralled with this series completely obsessed. I could not put it down and I totally cannot wait for book four.
Tessa and Kalen have been fighting tooth and nail for their people and their love, I cannon wait to find out after that cliffhanger! I mean after all we went through with this book for that ending!
OMG IM SHAKING IN MY BOOTIES FOR MORE!!!!
Loved the book... It picked up right where the 2nd book ended and it felt amazing to read how the story proceeds. Love the characters and the world building...
