Halfway through cooking dinner, Sarah seemingly vanishes into thin air. An intriguing premise, which started really well.
This is an ok read, However I felt it would benefit from some more character development, some are lacking depth, particularly Kate’s husband and mother in law, who are both quite pointless in the storyline.
The first half of the book is well paced and draws you right in, but then it becomes a bit lacklustre and predictable and I found that I stopped caring about the characters.
I was waiting for a huge, jaw-dropping twist that never came.
If you haven’t read many thrillers, then this would be a great read, but if you’ve read lots in this genre, it will be too easy to figure it out.
2.5/3 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for an ARC in return for an honest review.
I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I thought I would. I just felt like it was lacking something. The story really felt like it dragged on. There were a few twists but nothing exciting. Although it wasn’t my favorite, I did like the ending. Thank you NetGalley and Ruth, and Inkubator Books for the ARC!
What a book.
This story was gripping, interesting, and I couldn’t stop reading.
I felt like the story kept up the momentum and the emotions it had, too. Being a sister and feeling the way Kate did, trying to solve the mystery. I thought I was right until that twist. Wow.
Loved this book had some great twists and turns great characters it was a little long but it kept my interest pretty good ...
The silent wife started off pretty good for me. I found it to be somewhat predictable and throwing plot twists at you kinda saw coming. I enjoyed the book but i didn’t love it. More like 3.5 stars
Why would a woman walk out of her house in the middle of cooking dinner? That's what James wonders when he hears the smoke alarms going off as things are burning on the stove. But Sarah's sister Kate thinks she knows why. Because running is what Sarah does.
And even though Kate is hesitant to get the police involved, she is worried about her brother-in-law, James, so much so that she is spending an awful lot of time with him and well.... we know where that is going. James thinks Sarah is telling lies, Sarah thinks James is telling lies. Kate's husband, Chris, might be telling lies. And Kate is forced to tell some white lies. So many lies!
We eventually find out about the secrets in Sarah's past - one that is predictable, and one that comes out of left field. By the time Kate unravels what has actually driven Sarah from her home and marriage, Kate's in serious trouble - and so is her marriage.
To me, the sign of a good book is still thinking about it when you go on to the next book, and that's exactly how I felt about The Silent Wife. As with her other books, Ruth Harrow knows how to tell a suspenseful tale!
Thanks to NetGalley, Inkubator Books, and Booksprout for an advanced reader's copy.
I loved this book, I loved how the story unfolded and it all came out as to what the true story was. Really well written and fast paced. It was also set in my home town so it was really nice actually knowing where the places that were spoke about were.
I was pulled into the story right away.
Kate misses a call from her sister, Sarah, but it's obvious from the message left that something is very wrong. Worried, Kate decides to pay her sister a visit, only to discover Sarah's husband, James, frazzled, the smoke detector going off but no sign of Sarah. She simply vanished while in the middle of making dinner. All of Sarah's belongings are accounted for.
Sarah and James just made a big announcement of expecting a baby on social media. They have a wonderful home and live the perfect life.
Believing that Sarah just requires some alone time and will return shortly. After several days go by and there's no word from Sarah, that's when Kate and James team up to try to track Sarah down. When Kate learns something, she realizes that Sarah is hiding something.
This story kept me guessing about why a woman who seemingly had it all would just up and leave wearing only the clothes she had on. Was she abducted? Was she injured? Why the need for the cloak and dagger behavior? Thoroughly entertaining read!
I received an ARC and I willingly read and reviewed this book.
Sarah is missing but the entire story is narrated by her sister Kate. As the weeks go by, Sarah remains gone and Kate becomes close to James, her brother-in-law, largely because her own marriage and life is a mess.
Bottom line every character in this book lies and none are all that likable. I cringed when Kate did something later in the book and Sarah just seems fine with it.
The characters are rather wooden and I don’t think the lack of emotion is very realistic.
Ummm…. What?
While it was a good read… I feel like I’ve been left with more questions than answers… like can we discuss how she fell into a relationship and started having intimate moments with her sisters husband? Prior to the drugs though…. Can we talk about how the wedge between Chris and Kate was so big and like ANY MORE DETAIL OR ATTEMPTS TO RECONCILE? Like I don’t know what to say cause I truly don’t know which direction this book was taking me. I hate to play devils advocate but I believed Sarah the whole time. It took me about 32 pages before I knew James was out his rabbit ass mind… the mother in law i would like to slap. Kirsty, I’d drag her by her ear lobes. Towards the end I was honestly perplexed… I couldn’t figure out how kaye believed this man for 297 pages… it was completely and utterly beyond me. I have so many questions, still. The epilogue was well structured it did cancel out like 15 questions I had but even still it aroused more questions.
IT IS IN NO WAY A BAD READ ITS DEFINITELY SOME TWISTED STUFF. I gave this 3/5 stars SOLEY because I felt like the plots were thickening and there were more cliffhangers than things coming full circle.
<i><b>special shout-out to netgalley, inkubator books, and Ruth Harrow for providing me with this ARC, in exchange for my honest opinion.
I was very excited for this book, but unfortunately it took me almost 3 weeks to read. The concept of the plot was good, however I felt the story and characters were underdeveloped. Why was Kate not more worried about her pregnant sister missing? There was a lot of narrative about the relationship between Kate and her husband/mother-in-law, but then no mention or real resolution in the second half of the book. Often times the story was repetitive including the verbiage used and sometimes redundant.
I appreciate this ARC and opportunity to read The Silent Wife.
Thanks NetGalley for the ARC of The Silent Wife by Ruth Harrow, published by Inkubator Books
This book was just ok for me, but I felt it lacked something, maybe a little more depth in the characters, the story flowed and I liked the plot and the pretense of the novel. However I didn't rush to get back to reading this story after putting it down.
Kate is the main character, she is married to Chris, they both work for his mother's business and Kate certainly feels overworked and taken advantage of by her. Kate and Chris's marriage seems to be affected also.
Kate's sister is Sarah and she is married to James and they have just announced their pregnancy. Kate isn't all that close to her sister but she receives a strange call from her one day and Kate heads over to try and figure out what's going on.
I found the thoughts repetitive at times
I wanted more depth from the story, it felt superficial, example main character would probably have been more upset about her sister's disappearance than I felt she was. I felt the communication between the characters wasn't realistic at times. Overall a decent story. I would read more by this author, this one just wasn't my favorite, I read In Her Footsteps previously and enjoyed that more.
The Silent Wife is a domestic thriller. Sara is pregnant and lives a perfect life to the outside world. But one evening she disappears while making dinner. She leaves messages for her sister Kate who does not respond until later. Sarah has left behind her keys, her purse and James, her husband.
When Kate finally hears the messages, she races over to her sister's house, the smoke detector is screaming loudly due to the dinner Sarah was preparing on the stove. James appears to have no idea where Sarah has gone. James seems awfully calm in spite of the mess Kate has discovered. Kate is worried about Sarah especially since this is not the first time Sarah has gone missing.
This story has many twists and turns that keep the reader guessing. The characters all have secrets from each other that will come out and lives will be changed as a result. I didn't feel it was as suspenseful as the story could have been. I figured out what was going on early into the story, so it was a little predictable.
3/5: Thanks to Inkubator Books, NetGalley and Ruth Harrow for an e-ARC in exchange for a my honest review.
I finished this quickly, so I round up to 3 stars but ultimately this one was just an okay read for me. The characters were all pretty lackluster and the middle of the book was redundant and felt like it dragged on and on. I kept waiting for a bombshell level twist to make this book come together and it just never came. I may try another one from this author, but I definitely won’t be reading this one a second time.
The book’s description was very interesting, wife mysteriously disappears amidst her picture perfect Insta-worthy life. Her sister is determined to find out what has happened to her but finds that nothing is as picture perfect as it seems. This is definitely the kind of book that I would enjoy but unfortunately, it isn’t as exciting as it appears to be. The characters are underdeveloped, there isn’t much background information to their story which makes their actions and reactions flat or unrealistic. I would have wanted Kate’s backstory to be fleshed out more in order to make her decisions more relatable or understandable. Another thing that I found off-putting was the characters’ reactions in certain parts of the story which seem to be too calm for those situations which makes them less relatable and disconnected. The plot can be predictable at times but I did not really mind that. The writing style is good and the pacing of the story was okay. The author’s style of writing made this book easy to consume/read which I really liked. Overall, not really bad but would have wanted a bit more thriller from this book.
This has such an amazing premise and I was sure I'd be immediately hooked by the mystery but I just found myself getting more and more frustrated as the book went on lol. The characters are all just vile and or weak, I've no clue why they all made such awful decisions other than to allow the book to be written. There wasn't really any twists and as someone who was hoping for more of a thriller type vibe then it just felt a bit lacking. For those who do like character based type dramas it would pro ably suit though
Thank you for the opportunity to provide my honest opinion.
The Silent Wife was one of those books I found difficult to finish and I think the genre just wasn’t for me. I disliked the main characters husband and his mother from the start and felt the author didn’t really address the unfair treatment at all.
It’s 3 stars from me.
This one had a lot of promise, but I kept waiting for a plot twist that never came. I was actually making them up in my head, and they kept getting wilder and wilder the longer you waited, but the book stayed the predictable course. Overall it was just ok for me.
The book about a sister who disappears started off interestingly. Then there were some confusing conflicts. One example: the police were contacted about the disappearance, they replied the family needed to wait 24 hours before the police could act. The police weren’t contacted again for a week. Another example: neighbors, friends and other people were contacted to ask if they had seen Sarah lately. Then the sister and the husband had a conversation about keeping the disappearance hush-hush, to prevent gossip.
The story dragged, I kept waiting for things to happen..
This psychological thriller had me hooked and on the edge of my seat the whole time!!! So good!!
I just reviewed The Silent Wife by Ruth Harrow. #TheSilentWife #NetGalley
