Identity is a classic Nora Roberts thriller/romance.
The writing was kinda cheesy… I didn’t love the way Morgan called her mom and grandma “the ladies,” and I’m over the pushy, manly man trope (and the intense relationship with said manly man which develops out of nowhere), but Nora’s pretty old school, so it’s not surprising.
Setting aside predictability and what lacked, I still enjoyed this book. There were so many details of Morgan’s life before and after the tragedy: her home, her bar and all the tasks entailed, her childhood. It always blows my mind that such detail can come from an author who pumps out so many novels. I was gripped, but maybe rolled my eyes a little too often.
The audio narration was excellent and definitely kept me connected to Morgan, her life, and her fears.
With a twist on the modern crime of identity theft, Roberts tells the story of Morgan Albright, child of a career Army officer. Morgan wants to establish roots and has purchased a house with plans (and savings) to open her own business. She and her roommate Nina plan a dinner party one night for them and invite dates. Nina's long-term boyfriend comes as does Luke, a guy Morgan met in the bar where she works.
When Morgan's house gets broken into and Nina is killed, Morgan's carefully crafted world implodes. In addition to the death of her best friend, she learns that "Luke" has stolen her identity, wiped out all her savings, mortgaged her house, and stolen her car. With no alternative, Morgan manages to sell her house in Maryland for the balance owed and move to Vermont. After moving in with her mother and grandmother, Morgan lands a job at the resort nearby. Miles Jameson, one of the resort owners, and Morgan hit it off. But 'Luke,' real name Gavin Roswell isn't finished with Morgan. Though he has continued to steal the identities and murder other women, he still feels his interaction with Morgan is incomplete and doesn't feel he can rest until he murders her as well.
Read by January LaVoy, you won't want to take any breaks listening to this one!
I had the pleasure of reading another advanced copy of the latest Nora Roberts hit, Identity and it was so good.
Morgan finally met a man that she was interested in getting to know further even if spending time with him distracted her from reaching her goals. Except this man, a con man and serial killer, murders her best friend and steals everything from her.
To escape the horrible memories, Morgan moves to a small town in Vermont to be with her family. After time and hard work, Morgan settles into her new life with a job doing what she loves and a new love, Miles Jameson. Except, the cold-hearted killer, Gavin, is compelled to kill the one who got away, Morgan. Gavin spans the country with the FBI on his tail as he makes his way to Morgan.
The story is suspenseful and the romance is heartfelt with realistic characters. Morgan is a good example of a strong woman who can stand up for herself and can find happiness despite horrible things happening to her.
The audiobook is well narrated.
Another fantastic romantic suspense from the Queen, Nora Roberts!
When Morgan is targeted by a serial killer who steals her identity, racks up a shocking amount of debt and then kills her friend, she is forced to move back home with her mother and grandmother. Finding a job at a resort, Morgan slowly learns how to find joy and love among her family and new friends but the killer from the past won't let her enjoy a new lease on life.
Full of romance and action and as always a great cast of secondary characters! This was also great on audio narrated by January LaVoy! Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for early digital copies in exchange for my honest review.
Nora Roberts does not disappoint! Identity is another fabulous book. It is a psychological thriller and a romance novel combined into one novel. Morgan, the protagonist, learns the importance of family and friends as she deals with the smooth talking Luke, the antagonist, whose real name is Gavin. Gavin is a serial killer. The book is a fast and enjoyable listen. The narration is done well too.
Thank you #NetGalley, #MacMillanAudio, #NoraRoberts, #JanuaryLaVoy and #Identity for the advance audiobook for my honest review.
Morgan Albright has settled down and s pursuing the American dream of owning her own home. Granted she has to hold down two jobs and have a roommate to do it, but she and Nina have become almost like sisters. When the two women hold a dinner party, Morgan invites a charming man she met at the bar where she works. The charming man turns out to be a killer and Morgan comes home to find her home has been robbed and that Nina has been killed. Destroyed by the loss of her friend, Morgan moves in with her grandmother in Vermont where she meets another charming man, but Morgan is afraid to trust anyone after the terrible incident in Baltimore. Nora Roberts never disappoints, she pulls readers right into her stories, allowing them to be a part of the book
📖 About: Morgan Albright was raised an Army brat, constantly moving from one place to the next. As an adult, she is desperate for some roots. After years of working two jobs, Morgan buys her first home and plants those roots near Baltimore. Things are panning out just as Morgan imagined. Though she's single, she has her best friend / roommate Nina, enjoys her jobs, and is having fun fixing up her house.
Things come crashing down after she's taken for everything she has by a serial killer / con man. He takes her identity, her credit, her savings, her home, and plans to take her life.... but he murders her best friend instead (who was in the wrong place at the wrong time).
Distraught and defeated, Morgan reluctantly goes home to her grandmother and mother, and starts over. Here she begins rebuilding her life, and finds happiness, love, community and a strengthened relationship with the women in her family. But the killer is still out there, and Morgan is the one who got away. He's determined to finish what he started, and will stop at nothing to do it.
💭 Thoughts: Identity is a quintessential Nora Roberts romantic suspense, and I loved every second of it! 🎉
I have been reading Nora longer than any other author, have read almost everything she's written (which is a LOT), and she never gets old!
Her character development is unparalleled, and she weaves a perfect combination of mystery / thriller / romance.
Identity pulled me in immediately, and I devoured it in two days. Completely captivated! I read along with the audiobook, narrated by one of my favorite narrators: January Lavoy. January performed this beautifully, with the perfect voices for each of the characters (and there are a LOT of characters). Just a stellar performance from start to finish. 👏🏻
My favorite thing about Nora Roberts novels - and this one was no different - is the strong women she writes. From Grandma to Mom to Daughter. They're all so strong and capable, and I love their relationships with one another; how they support one another. I also love the way she builds community, and the found family component that's so prevalent in her novels.
This was just fantastic and I'm so grateful to my #partners St Martin's and Macmillan Audio for my gifted copies. 💕💕💕
I will be posting my review on my Instagram account closer to pub day.
