I received this book for free for an honest unbiased review from Netgalley.
I wish more books were this well written. Characters were witty and the setting fantastic.
This took me a little while to finish mostly because I didn’t know that it was part of a series, one that most definitely cannot be read as a stand alone. It was very interesting, the world building and nuances pretty cool, but because I hadn’t read the previous installments this was crazy confusing.
I did not finish this one, it was not for me, I couldn't relate to the characters, and just did not care for the story.
Loved the first book. Now this one is even better! Keep up the AMAZING writing Abbie! After he saves her life, she makes him fall for her. Although, things are getting a little rough, with someone watching them. Be sure and check the trigger warnings for some people this is important.
A great installment. Well written and great world development. Definitely cannot be read as a stand alone
Another thrilling installment in this series. This is such a unique series! It's part crime thriller, part spicy romance and I can't get enough. I'm really hoping there will be more books from this author soon!
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Trigger Warning: SA, murder, kidnapping
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This was my first paranormal romance book, and it kept me on the edge of my seat. This is book 2 in the Beautiful Nightmares series. We meet Lathan Montgomery, an FBI consultant with a special ability. He can detect memories using scents. Evanee Brown is a waitress who has had a rough life. The two meet after Lathan saves Evanee from an awful home situation. Through many bumps along the way, they realize that fate has other plans.
it was quite a strange book, to say the least. for the first 30% i was utterly confused and trying to figure out wether this book featured a supernatural element or not and commit to memory who the characters were but it got better after that. on the characters, i must say i couldn’t take them seriously because of their names which were pretty ridiculous. other than that, they were very compelling and i liked reading from both of their perspectives, though this book could’ve benefited from stating who the narrator for which chapter was because it was often unclear to me. the mystery/thriller-y aspect of the story quickly hooked me in and I was eager to discover more. overall, this book was quite a good one, not a new favorite by any means but one i’d recommend nonetheless. 3.5 stars
In the first book of the series, Dangerous Dreams, Xander has special abilities that make make him an asset to the FBI. While visiting the scene of destruction, he notices a burly man with facial tattoos hanging around his crime scene.
His name is Lathan; he also has special abilities, works for the FBI and Broken Dreams is his story….
In this psychological/paranormal/romantic thriller Lathan is tracking down a dangerous killer dubbed, The Strategist. The Strategist kills men and women of all races and has no signature. The only thing that links him to thirty eight different crime scenes is the prominent smell of vanilla that only Lathan can detect.
Fate brought Lathan and Evanee together even when her traumatic past, and the Strategist, try to rip them apart. Lathan has always been alone because of his “condition” but Evanee has fit perfectly into his life and in his arms.
Evanee presents special abilities that may bring Lathan closer to the Strategist but it comes with dangerous consequences. Can they solve these crimes, find the Strategist, and live to tell their story?
“As long as the light shines in one of you, the other will live.”
Every time I finish one of Abbie Roads books I’m always craving more! The ending of this book hinted towards a third book, Shattered Dreams, and I can’t wait to see the magic that the author brings into Evanee’s brother’s world.
I'm hooked on this very different series. I now understand what's going on between the individual couples, very special dreams. Each of the couples have a very special bond that helps the FBI solve or stop murders from happening. The female is the dreamer and the male is her protector. I'm really looking forward to Thomas' story next.
This one deals with Lathan Montgomery who is so gifted that he must keep himself isolated and off grid to keep people away. He's a special consultant for the FBI because of his abilities. His brain has overdeveloped olfactory senses so that he can smell a person's essence and even their memories. For most all of his childhood he was in and out of institutions because he saw visions that no one understood and thought he was mentally ill. His mother still thinks so. While in an institution a fellow teenage patient attacked him. The injury left him almost completely deaf. He lip reads rather than signing and doesn't usually let on that he's deaf. As an adult his brain was finally scanned and they found the answers to his abilities. He puts them to good use by working with the FBI tracking murderers. Currently it's the serial killer The Strategist. His partner and handler is his childhood best friend Gill Garrison. When he meets Evanee Brown everything changes.
Evanee Brown is a waitress at Sweet Buns & Eats Truck Stop. She's had a hard life between her abusing step brother Junior and a mother who doesn't interfere. Junior's father, also an abuser is the sheriff. She briefly was a rich man's Kitten that provided her protection. When that ended she went to work at Sweet Buns which is similar to Hooters. She's desperate to get out of town and she makes good tips there. After work she takes off in her car for a drive and runs into trouble. Junior tampered with her car and has been following her in his tow truck. Things go from bad to worse quickly. Lathan sees it when he drives by and comes to her rescue. It doesn't take long to realize their connection is something more than usual. She calms him, and he does her as well when they touch. When Evanee brings back an an item from a dream, that's from another kill his team is investigating. The FBI wants answers. Turns out she has special abilities too. I won't say more so I don't spoil the story but it's fascinating and I couldn't put it down.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Oh my goodness this book was BRILLIANT!!
It is 5 stars all the way for this one from me
The book had action, intrigue, suspense, romance and it really did have the WOW factor.
The book was very well written, I loved the author's writing style and the pace for the book too.
This was a book that had me well and truly hooked and it was very addictive
As I said at the start, 5 stars from me for this one - very highly recommended!!
This is a wild rollercoaster of a read! An oddly satisfying combo of dark romance and Criminal Minds type vibes.

This is the second book in the Beautiful Nightmare series- and it’s just as good as the first! Both are on 𝙆𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙡𝙚 𝙐𝙣𝙡𝙞𝙢𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙙 so go and check them out if dark romance is your thing. Thank you to Netgalley and Abbie Roads for a copy of this in exchange for a honest review. This is a part of a series but can be read as a stand alone.
Lathan was such an interesting character, a FBI consultant with specialized gifts. Both him and the FMC Evanee have experienced trauma from a young age, and are reeling with each other to attempt to heal whilst outsmarting a serial killer who is on the loose.
This read kept me on the edge of my seat with its pace, action, and plot development. Some of the early part of the book confused me, I had to reread to understand, but overall I really enjoyed it. The ending took many different turns, so hold on to your lug nuts!
Intense, suspenseful, hot-intelligent-romance. I'd give this more than five stars if I could. The characters seep inside you and their emotions lead you on. This story has hypnotic energy that catches your imagination and doesn't let go. Once I started, I didn't let go! I read until I was finished. Every page was a new experience of waiting to see what direction Ms. Roads would take with her characters. I love how she takes something "scientific" and runs with the idea of giving her story the basis for what could be factual. Is this type of olfactory sensing associated with someone else's experiences real? Does it truly exist? And how would it be for a person to be able to know more than what was intended? I am the type of person who reads a book, says, "huh." Then I move on to my next great read. After reading Broken Dreams, Beautiful Nightmare #2, I couldn't do that. This story stuck with me while I tried to digest what I had read. There is sexual content which is something I am not usually a fan of. But in this story, it works. It belongs. It is a part of the human experience. And it is hot. I liked Dangerous Dreams, but I loved Broken Dreams. I know there is another one coming and I am anxiously waiting. The covers are a beautiful addition to any library.
Abbie Roads slams her foot down on the gas pedal and never lets up. This second book on the series is a pulse pounding, wild ride. Don't miss this one.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC. Wow what a book. So many twists and turns that you won't want to put the book down so you can find out what will happen next. A stalker. A killer. A virgin hero who will sacrifice himself to save the woman he loves. If you devour true crime and romance novels then you’ll love a series that combines both in a roller-coaster ride of danger, mind games, and swoon worthy love. This is the 2nd book in the series but it can be read as a stand alone. I can't wait to go back and read book 1. If you like on the edge of your seat reads you will love this one!
Broken Dreams by Abbie Roads is book Two in the Beautiful Nightmare Series. This is the story of Lathan Montgomery and Evanee Brown. Lathan has a special scent memories abilities that he uses for the FBI. Lathan's scent sensibilities have made it hard for him to be involved with someone. So, he stays clear of any type of relationship or contact. But, he ends up saving Evanee which opens him up to a new world because she don't upset his sensitivity and more importantly she helps him. This was an exciting read. I hope to read more from this author.
I love books that make you question whether it is possible for people to have "special gifts". A part of me wants to say no way that is possible, but then the other part of me says who knows? Then you throw in the romance, danger, betrayal, loyalty, and abuse of power. This was such an unputdownable book. This is the first book I've read by the author and while this is a standalone story, I can't wait to go back and read the previous story.
Abbie Roads has another amazing book in Broken Dreams. Another one with all my favorite aspects of books: fantasy, crime, romance.
The MMC is another MC with a special ability. He’s deaf due to an accident, but he’s able to see memories through smell. You can feel his frustration through the pages. The writing was wonderful. I liked that she wrote him AS a deaf character, not just as a normal character. You can tell through the way she’s writing that he can’t hear. The FMC was also fabulously written. I don’t want to give anything away, but there relationship is important!
With the added benefit (given the circumstances this could be the wrong word) of solving crimes together, it really is such a strong plot. It easy to follow and understand. The only part I had trouble with was understanding who was speaking when. Sometimes I had to back track a little bit to figure out it out. Other than that, it was well worth the time spent to read it.
I was provided an advanced copy of this book to read, with the expectation of an unbiased review, which I am voluntarily giving now.
This was my first Abbie Roads book and it will not be my last. I read it in one sitting, late into the night when I should have been sleeping. As someone who's long been a fan of shows like Criminal Minds and also romance novels- this seemed like a great book to try. Zero regrets in my decision to read this while losing sleep.
The characters are so intriguing (seriously, mind blowing intrigue). FBI Special Skills Consultant Lathan Montgomery crosses paths when he saves Evanee Brown from an awful situation, instantly placing himself as role of protector in her life. This instant chemistry story, combined with danger at all turns, males for an explosive read.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
