DI Oliver has a lot to contend with - her daughter is straining at the reins and off on an archaeological dig before college, her husband is on trial in London for money laundering and she's thrown into a new case - the shooting of a local MP during a grouse shoot and the discovery of a child's skeleton on the archaeological dig. All set in Reiver Country and a bit too much about reiving overall. We get it. The local police are a closed bunch - it's Reiver Country, the new laird is American and wants to do the right thing for his estate but locals are again him or are they? The girl's body raises old history - Reiver families you know by now - serial killer, did they get the wrong man? Plenty of twists, lovely feel of place even if reiving ott, typical characters and a generally good read but not quite the edge that previous stories had. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy.
As it is set local to me, it immediately gets five stars and in all honesty would get one on the back of Lynne’s previous books. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy it as much as the previous one for some reason and not just because the main action was a bit further east from here. There was just something missing.
Lynne McEwan is already on my must read list and I look forward to her next book.
I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley.
I never really warmed to this story. There was a lot of angst and hostility - between Shona and her husband (sadly she still hasn't ditched him), Shona and the local sergeant, Shona and her DC Kate, Shona and her boss, Shona and a local archaeology professor, the local 'Mafia-style reiver families (we heard a LOT about Border reivers). The cases Shona was investigating weren't that interesting either - an injury during a grouse shoot, and a cold case (the 'Girls in the Glen' of the title).
I think I'm done with this series.
I do enjoy books by this author. Crime fiction, set in Scotland, well written and plenty interesting characters woven through a clever plot. DI Shona Oliver is becoming one of my favourite characters in book 3 of this series. Shona is investigating the shooting of a politician and a cold case from the 1980's. Another highly recommended read and a very good series. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
Past And Present..
The third outing for Detective Shona Oliver and an archeological dig throws up more than expected. Is the newly excavated corpse one of the missing Girls in the Glen and a victim of a notorious serial killer? As Shona is wrenched between past and present crimes, she realises that she may not be able to trust those she should trust most. With an engaging plot populated with a deftly drawn cast, many nicely woven threads, a firm sense of place and a pacy narrative this character driven procedural is a worthy entry in the series and could happily be read as a standalone.
Amazing, I love this style of writing and it had everything, I do like this author they really do explain things in great detail
