In the tunnel by Julie Lee is middle grade historical fiction novel. Lee tells the story of a boy named Myung-gi, living on the brink of the Korean War. Myung-gi is attempting to flee North Korea is abducted by a secret police force. Because of the abduction, we follow Myung-gi and his family on their personal road to justice.
I LOVED this book! Lee has a captivating voice and her prose allowed for me to be extremely invested. The historical facts were also woven seamlessly and was something that was able to be digested well. I look forward to reading more from Julie Lee!
Wow. This book tells the story of a boy's life leading up to and during the Korean War. Impactful and moving. Lee absolutely captures the bleakness of life as a refugee of war. Harrowing and emotional with a tear-jerker ending.
There is also a lot of good historical information interwoven in the story. And one thing us book nerds will notice and appreciate, is that Lee begins many of her chapters with famous literary quotes, which then become somewhat of a theme for that chapter.
Lots of good stuff here.
