Last Girl Breathing by Court Stevens is a heartbreaking yet suspenseful YA novel.
This book was a trip it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire read I never knew what was going to happen next which kept the story interesting and entertaining.
I was sucked into the craziness that continued to transpire page after page.
The characters are so real I could picture them inside of my mind as I read and the scenery.
This book is full of twists and unexpected moments right from the beginning.
Stevens did an excellent job with the plot and character development which had me totally invested in what I was reading as the suspense and tension developed.
It was an intense, quick and fast-paced mystery with a very satisfying ending. Would recommend!

Thank You NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
I have been following Courtney/Court Stevens since her debut novel, Faking Normal. I said it then and I'll say it now... Court Stevens' novels do not get the attention they deserve from the young adult community. As a reader, it has been amazing to witness this author really come into her own and find her niche in the young adult suspense genre.
I enjoyed We Were Kings but Last Girl Breathing absolutely blew me away! Last Girl Breathing sucks readers right into Lucy Micheals's world on page one and does loosen its grip until the final page. As a reader, I was not only consumed by the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Lucy's friends but the way the setting of Grand Junction, KY was brought to life, the characters who lived in this world, and the grief that lingers in this town after a tragic dam break. The various ways people experience grief is beautifully woven into this small town mystery. I have NEVER annotated so many passages in a suspense/thriller novel in my life.
Last Girl Breathing will repeatedly break your heart and keep you guessing until you question your own sanity. Do yourself a favor, go ahead and preorder this book, and clear your schedule for November 7th, 2023.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. (:
My heart broke repeatedly for Lucy, but by the last page, my heart was so happy of her.
The story spans nearly a decade, beginning with the death of Lucy's younger brother during an environmental disaster and the tragic events of the "present."
Having grown up in a small town, I was taken back to the small sense of community while also turning a blind eye to important topics and concerns. It's this culture that adds twists and turns to Lucy's story.
I thought this was an enjoyable mystery, lots of twists and turns, I think it does a good job of raising questions about gun laws, felt like the characters lacked developmemt but the plot kept me reading!
What a book! It left me guessing until the end on who was behind all of the chaos! I had a little trouble keeping up on which kids belonged with which parents throughout the book. The mystery and suspense will definitely hook the reader, though!
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the arc. The opinions are my own
Heart pounding thriller that left me on the edge of my seat. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Definitely one of the best books this year.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I'm always looking for a good mystery to share with my high school book club. This one had enough twists and turns and intrigue that I think it would be a fitting addition to our book club.
The characters and plot were fresh amd interesting.
So many twists and turns and shocking moments and whirlwind revelations that it’s an amazing read. Just about the time you think you have it figured out.. think again! If you want to read a book that keeps you guessing this is definitely for you! I throughly enjoyed the ride this took me on! Thank you!!!
Last Breath for a Girl was a riveting read that kept me guessing until the very end. The novel starts off with a camping trip gone wrong when Lucy's little brother goes missing during a flash flood. Years later, Lucy's family is rocked by multiple murders, with her ex-boyfriend Neil as the prime suspect. With time running out and a third family member still missing, Lucy is determined to uncover the truth.
What I loved about this book was the way Court Stevens weaved the past and present together to create a haunting and suspenseful tale. The characters were well-developed and their relationships with one another added depth to the story. It was hard not to feel for Lucy and her family as they struggled to cope with loss and betrayal. The ending was satisfying and tied up all loose ends, while still leaving room for interpretation. Overall, I highly recommend Last Breath for a Girl to anyone looking for a gripping mystery novel.
Court Steven's does not disappoint in this fantastic thriller. The rural setting of Kentucky and the tragedy that follows a devastating flood is something many can relate to as Kentucky is filled with waterways. For Lucy and her friends, the loss of her little brother, Clay, ties them together as they deal with the trauma. Once it is discovered that the dam break was due to sabotage and those that uncovered the secret ended up dead or missing things really heat up. All clues seem to place Lucy's boyfriend at the scene of the recent murders, and he is arrested, convicted, and jailed. Lucy doesn't believe that Neil is responsible, so she begins to investigate herself. The twists and turns that this story takes you through has you guessing as to who it could be that had the most to lose if the truth came out. A fun and gripping tale that I would encourage anyone who likes a great mystery to read. Oh, and did I mention there was a dog! Who doesn't love a dog, especially a therapy dog! Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to enjoy this ARC.!
So I’m going to admit that I didn’t know that air rifle competitions were a thing until I read this book, I also learned a lot more about dams and nature than I knew before reading it. Not knowing those things didn’t hinder me from reading, or enjoying this book, which spans Many years and has more plot twists than I can count. Lucy has long carried the guilt of her little brothers, death during a free green storm, while she was camping, but when new information comes to light about that storm, and the dam breaking, she realizes that maybe isn’t everything isn’t as it seems. When two more of her friends show up dead, and one goes missing it becomes clear that everything is not as idyllic is the town would like people to believe. This book is definitely a wild ride, with new twist interns at every corner. Well, the first part does seem to come to an initial abrupt end, the reader definitely find the resolution in the second part of the book.
This is a complicated layered novel with nods to environmentalism, gun rights (and abuse), and what happens when the past and present collide with secrets. Growing up in a small town I could imagine the rural culture and close ties to the community. This story will leave you curious, angry, and flipping pages to see what comes next.
A great mistery with a chilling plot and a magistral conclusion ! Last girl breathing was a book than I expect a lot from, and I'm glad to say I'm not disappointed ! It quickly got me speeding trough the pages causa I was SO anxious to know whodunit and the reasons ! Would totally recommend this one, thank you net galley for providing me this ARC !
Court Stevens is great at writing YA mystery books. This one doesn't disappoint. We follow the main character as she is haunted by the past and trying to figure out what really happened, and who caused it. I felt this book was well written and really came full circle.
Thank you netgalley for an arc of Last Girl Breathing by Court Stevens
Thank you Thomas Nelson and Netgalley for this eARC, these opinions are my own. I really enjoyed Last Girl Breathing, lots of twists and turns! When Lucy was young her family, both blood and bonded, went camping. When the rain poured her and the other kids were cut off from their parents, they decide to go to higher ground and wait it out but then the dam breaks. Lucy survives but her little brother is lost and they never find his body. Years later her mom’s remarried and she has a wonderful step brother that she loves dearly. Only problem is Martin doesn’t believe the dam break was an accident and then tragedy strikes again and she loses two more of her family members to murder. The prime suspect, her ex-boyfriend Neil, another of her family. Neil says he’s innocent but can she believe him, especially when he’s hiding things? Lucy is determined to find out what happened but time isn’t on her side as a third family member is still missing. Will Lucy find them
alive? Did Neil do it? And what if what’s happening in the present is connected to what happened in the past? Court Stevens latest mystery spans years and will have you hooked unable to put it down! I was pretty positive I knew the whodunnit early on but the why kept changing as Lucy found out more and more about what happened to her family in both the present and the past. It was intriguing and tragic and you’ll feel how rough things are for Lucy and her family. What do you do when the people you trust might just be the ones to fear most? Can’t wait to read it again!
