This is book 1 in the new series The Lost Bride. 1806: Astrid Poole sits in her bridal clothes, overwhelmed with happiness. But before her marriage can be consummated, she is murdered, and the circle of gold torn from her finger. Her last words are a promise to Collin never to leave him…
Years later Sonya MacTavish finds out that her dad had a twin she didn't know about. Even more astonishing is the fact that he left seemingly everything to her. A Victorian home, money, and a curse that she must find a way to break.....
Sonya McTavish is weeks away from getting married when she finds out that her soon-to-be husband and cousin have been having an affair behind her back. She is upset that she has been betrayed by the man she thought she loved, but it was more the money she forked over for the wedding that hurt the most and then having to quit a job that she loves so much because working with her ex is starting to be harmful to her mental health. So, she decides to go it alone and start her own business. When a knock comes to the door and Sonya finds out she has inherited a manor from an uncle she didn’t know in Maine, and she was not aware that her father was twin that had been given away at birth. So, with her mother’s blessing and her best friend she moves up to Maine to check things out. Little did she know that she would be sharing the house....with spirits of the past.
Trey is a handsome young lawyer and the son of the lawyer who came to visit Sonya. He helps her navigate all the house with all its spirits and doors slamming and a mysterious housekeeper...and becomes a very important part of her stay at the Manor. And let’s not forget the music that plays when no one is around to turn it on. There are many mysteries in this house and Sonya is detrained to find out just who and why the brides of the manor were killed and breaking the curse that is upon this manor, because despite all that is going on this house, Sonya is not leaving...
I loved this book from start to finish. Nora Roberts gives us romance, mystery, paranormal, humor and great characters we are going to fall in love with. She gives us great friendships old and new and delights us with a wonderful story. This is a book you are going to want on your TBR list this year.
My thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's press for allowing me to have a ARC of this book to read and review. I have given my honest thoughts in review for this books.
I love the concept of this book with the house being haunted and the FMC interacting with the spirits that live there, however, this ain't no American Horror Story. The feel of this book is like a Hallmark movie. It's cheesy and the characters seemed pretty one dimensional. I was really hoping to find some spookiness. I believe there are probably many people out here who would love the way this book gave you all the warm fuzzies but it was just not my cup of tea.
Nora Roberts is one of the first authors I truly enjoyed reading. I was thrilled to receive this gifted copy from NetGalley and St Martin's Press!
I don't typically reads books that are part of a series. I prefer standalones, but this is a series you will NEED to check out. I devoured this book. I loved the characters, the history, the way the author perfectly describes every detail of the mansion and what is happening, and the overall plot is addicting.
Because this is a series, this book ends with a cliffhanger. I NEED to know how Sonya's story continues. I highly recommend this book!
I loved this book! This is the first book in the Lost Bride trilogy. Sonya is busy planning her wedding when she comes home early and catches her fiance in bed with one of the bridesmaids...her cousin no less. To make matters worse she works in the same graphic design firm that he does and knows things won't end well.
In the process of resigning and starting to work on her own she finds out she had an uncle she never knew about, it was her late father's twin. They were separated at birth and her father never knew he existed. Her uncle found out too late, but in his death he decided to leave his house (aka manor) to his niece, along with a small portion of their shipbuilding business. With the house, there is a stipulation however. She must live there for three years. All of the expenses that deal with the home will be covered by trust, and her percent in the family business will be more than enough to get her through.
Why the 3 year stipulation with the manor? Well, it is haunted. And, 7 brides have died in one way or another during their stay there. Not only is the manor haunted, but one of the spirits is mean and will do anything to get Sonya out of the house. But, Sonya doesn't scare easily, and the longer she stays the more she falls in love with the manor and the town surrounding it. And, Trey is a little bonus - his firm is handling the will for Sonya and Sonya and Trey notice that there is a spark between them. And, he is more than willing to help her figure out who is haunting the manor, and what their end game is.
The one downfall of this book? It ended on a major cliffhanger.
I haven’t read a Nora Roberts book in maybe 20 years, but when I had a chance to read this latest from her, I jumped at the chance because the description really just sounded like a good book, and it was to be a trilogy. Well. I didn’t expect it to be quite so good, or to leave me on such a cliffhanger that I have no choice but to impatiently wait for the second book in the trilogy. I had forgotten how totally Roberts can draw you in with a carefully woven tale of myth, legend and lore, romance, and mystery. After finding her fiance in bed with her cousin, newly single Sonya is stunned to learn that her late father had a twin brother he never knew about, and that she’s been named his heir. With the caveat that she lives in his remote manor on the Maine coast for three years. A slightly (very) haunted manor named the Lost Bride Manor, after seven wives in the Poole family have lost their lives over the last 200 years. Drawn to the opportunity for a fresh start as much as she is the chance to find out why the twins were separated at birth, Sonya takes up residence in the seemingly empty house. Except she’s not alone, she’s co-existing with the lost brides, who are friendly and downright helpful spirits, and one evil presence determined to drive her away. With help and support from the Poole’s bay community and the Doyle family (especially young lawyer Trey *wink wink*), Sonya is prepared to get to the bottom of her family’s history and set to rights the young brides who lost their lives and loves. If you love tightly-spun tales of suspense, love, family, and the supernatural, or were a big fan of Karen White’s Tradd Street series, the new Lost Bride trilogy is for you!
Nora Roberts is back with another Trilogy!
In Book 1, we meet Sonya MacTavish, a graphic designer who has inherited a majestic home on the coast of Maine from an uncle she never knew she had. What wasn't told to her, is that the mansion is haunted by the Lost Brides; each generation, a women has died within the mansion.
As a fan of Nora Roberts, I understand how her series usually works: in trilogies, three female friends/family end up pairing off with three male friends/family. Each book details their romance along with whatever story surrounds them. The couple declare their love for each other and by the end of their book - they have their happily ever after.
Except this time NR has turned the tables on us. While there is definitely a romance brewing with Sonya and Trent, I can foresee only one other potential couple being paired off. Who will be the third?
And to switch things up even more... Nora has left us with an absolute zinger of a cliffhanger! I don't think any of her other trilogies have ended so abruptly - so much so that I am unsure how I feel about it.
This first book reminds me of the In The Garden and Boonsboro Inn Trilogies, so if you are fans of those two series, you will love this one.
I can't wait for the next book in this series!
Sonya MacTavish thought she had the dream life: engaged, soon to be married, and dream job. It all suddenly crashes when she catches her fiancé is cheating on her. Sonya is in limbo when the unexpected happens an inheritance from her dead uncle her father's twin. Now Sonya is on her way to a life she never expected to have in a haunted manor filled with ghosts. Can Sonya live this dream life? Find out Inheritance.
Wow!!! Nora Roberts did it again!! I have been a big fan for years and she has another winner!! Yeah, this is the first book in a new trilogy, but will capture the reader from the very first page and doesn't let go, not even at the end, Who doesn't like an inheritance to beat all inheritances, a big spooky house with lots of ghosts, bangs and eerie sounds late at night, a treasure hunt and long lost loves? The ending comes with a BIG surprise, but it's only meant to make sure you tune into the next book in this trilogy to learn more. Well worth the read and I wish I could give it more than 5 stars!!! Highly recommend!! Thanks, Nora, for another wonderful tale. Looking forward to reading the rest.
It had been a long time since I had read a Nora Roberts book. I love her style of writing. I was so happy when I found out I was going to be able to read an advance copy. At first I thought this was one of the Inn Boroughs book. The cover looks very similar to that series. It also has the same feel to it. I loved every part of this book.
I highly recommend reading this book.
Nora Roberts is a master storyteller. This book grabs you from the first page until the last word. I could not put it down. The characters, the setting , the story itself is pure magic. Five stars is not enough and I so need the next book!!!
The Lost Bride Trilogy starts off with a great first installment! I was quickly pulled into the story with the introduction of the first bride. It was a very dramatic start that sets the backstory for all of the future brides.
The book switches to a current day perspective in the first chapter with the introduction of our main character, Sonya MacTavish. Sonya's start in this book is definitely difficult but it helps to set up the premise behind the rest of story. Struggling with life events (not to be spoiled), Sonya comes into an unexpected inheritance which includes a house. She quickly moves into the house only to quickly realize that everything isn't as it seems.
Is it her imagination that has objects shifting around or is it something else? How many possible ghosts inhabit this house? Are they all friendly? Maybe, maybe not!
I really enjoyed the supernatural aspects of the book and look forward to reading the next installment, especially since it ended with a bit of a cliff hanger!
Whew!! I just finished this new Nora book and I’m reeling.
I’ve not read all of Nora’s books but, from what I can remember, they all end. I’ve not read any with cliffhangers. This book left me in shock. I’m dying for book two, and this one hasn’t even released yet!!
I’m not usually a girl who reads about spooky things like haunted houses, except the few NR ones. So this was a step up from what I’ve experienced. The moment I opened my kindle I read til my eyes could no longer stay open. I needed to know what happened. I needed to get to the end. But now that I’m here, I NEED MORE. I don’t want to be left like this!!! Holy cow.
If you like haunted houses, romance, and glimpses into the past, then add this to your tbr. Nora sucked me right in and now I’m not sure what to do. How do you move on after that ending?
I've loved Nora's romance trilogies for years and I was so excited for this new world and story. Equal parts ghost story and love story, it was just spooky enough! That cliffhanger ending, I can't wait to read more in this series. It started pretty slowly and I had hoped for a little more world-building and character development but still a fun read.
A great first installment in the Lost Bride trilogy. This had the classic, plucky Nora heroine, a sexy love interest, and fun best friend… and a small town setting in a haunted house. Sonya brushed off the ghosts for WAY too long and that was definitely eye roll inducing, but once she accepted them, her relationship with the friendly ghosts were actually pretty cute.
I liked all the details about Sonya’s work in graphic design advertising. I didn’t love the drag in the middle of this book… how many times do they need to discover and move furniture in this big house? And I didn’t really feel a big differentiation between Trey and Owen, the only two young guys in this town, but maybe I wasn’t paying attention.
The curse is interesting. The audiobook narration is EXCELLENTLY done. I’ll definitely continue in the series.
This book is incredible and there is a very clear reason why Nora Roberts is still the genre queen. Family secrets, haunted historical manors, ghosts, an evil witch, and characters that capture your heart? I’m in!
I didn’t know who I loved most: Sonya and Cleo, Winter, or the ghosts, Clover and Molly. Roberts have Lost Bride Manor a personality. I honestly can’t wait to see what happens with this house’s history. We saw 5 of the lost brides and need to know more ASAP. I can’t wait to see how they unravel the mystery of the seven rings and how the history settles itself.
Like my favorite Roberts books, the friendships play center role with romance just a delightful bonus. I could sit and read (aka watch in my mind movie) Sonya and Cleo all day in their beautiful house. Sonya’s relationship with Trey is adorable but takes a back seat to the besties.
I could go on but the overall point everything boils down to is that I honestly can’t wait for the next one. Now excuse me as I buy multiple copies as holiday gifts. 5/5. Recommend with highest regards.
First off, who doesn’t love Nora Roberts? Such a classic. My mom read her, my aunts, my Mimi, all the women in my life read her so of course I’m carrying tradition. I gobbled this read up and I couldn’t get enough. I cannot wait for the next 2. This was so well written and I really connected to Sonya and Cleo. I loved this.
"Inheritance" by Nora Roberts is an enchanting masterpiece, a novel that expertly weaves together the tapestry of mystery, family secrets, and the enduring power of love in a way that only Nora Roberts can.
Roberts' storytelling brilliance shines through every page of "Inheritance." This enthralling narrative introduces us to Sonya MacTavish, a graphic designer whose life takes a mesmerizing turn when she discovers a long-lost uncle's bequest, which includes an extraordinary Victorian mansion on the picturesque Maine coast. As Sonya grapples with a recent broken engagement and her newfound family revelations, she embarks on a journey to uncover the hidden truths behind her father's estranged twin.
The heart of this novel lies in its characters, each exquisitely developed and relatable. Sonya's emotional journey, her quest to unravel family mysteries, and her determination to confront a centuries-old curse are nothing short of captivating. Nora Roberts excels in crafting characters that resonate with readers, making them feel like cherished friends.
"Inheritance" is a spellbinding blend of romance, intrigue, and a touch of the supernatural. The Maine coast setting is brought to life with Roberts' vivid prose, immersing readers in the haunting beauty of the landscape and the enigmatic presence that lingers in the clifftop manor.
The novel's cleverly layered mysteries and the gradual unraveling of Sonya's inheritance make for an unputdownable read. Roberts expertly balances the supernatural with the everyday, creating a narrative that keeps the reader guessing while remaining deeply rooted in the relatable emotions of the characters.
Nora Roberts' "Inheritance" is a literary gem, a testament to her storytelling prowess, and a delightful testament to the enduring themes of family, love, and the unbreakable spirit of those who dare to confront their legacy. This book is a must-read for anyone who seeks an immersive, emotionally charged narrative that leaves a lasting impact. It's a remarkable achievement in contemporary fiction that will resonate with readers long after they've turned the final page.
Nora Roberts, my favorite author, is at it again with another gold star read. It’s Nora Roberts at her best combining the best of plot, characters, dialogue, conflict, and setting for a gothic novel of mystery, suspense, romance, and particularly ghosts good --- and bad. Sonia MacTavish finds she’s inherited a Maine gothic manor from an unknown uncle, who was also her father’s twin. To inherit everything she must live in the mansion for 3 years. She finds she’s inheriting ghosts and a family curse that must be resolved. To resolve this there's discovering family history as well as listening to the ghostly brides and the black adorned ghost with evil intentions. The characterization is fantastic, you’re ready to sit down with them and ask to be a friend and help solve the mystery. The scenery, oh how good Nora is at describing what you would find as a visitor, maybe it’s time for a trip to Maine to discover it’s beauty. The story puts you on pins and needles and sets up for the two novels to come in the Lost Bride Trilogy. And now the first novel is done and now it’s the waiting, with impatience, for the next novel in Sonia’s story. Thank you St Martin's Press and NetGalley for this arc.
That's one hell of a cliffhanger!
I would be perfectly happy living in Lost Bride Manor. Just drop me off, thanks.
It's always easy to become engrossed in a Nora Robert's novel and Inheritance, the first book in The Lost Bride Trilogy, is no different.
I'd liken this story to the old Nancy Drew books I grew up loving, shrouded in mystery and just chilling enough to give me goosebumps.
The story is deeply character-driven with a lot of dialogue, you never have to wonder what anyone might be thinking. I adored Sonya right from the start. She's strong-willed and easy to like. Cleo, her best friend, is also fantastic and as the story progressed, I grew to love her more. As far as the romance goes, it felt like a more gradual, natural occurrence. Friendship developed while also exploring feelings, I appreciated that aspect. Can't have a Robert's novel without the romance. ;)
Overall, I adored this story and it felt like a refreshing but almost nostalgic take on the haunted manor ghost stories I've always been drawn to.
HUGE thank you to St Martin's Press for the ARC to read, enjoy, and honestly review. I think at this point, I'll read anything by Nora Roberts and love it.
