Inheritance is the beginning of the next series in a long line of great trilogies from Nora Roberts. I couldn't put it down! While I wasn't completely drawn into The Chronicles of the One Trilogy like I'd wanted, this series has brought me back into the fold, and I'm impatiently waiting to find out what happens next with Sonya. Cleo, Trey, and Owen. Highly recommend!!
Nora Roberts is one of my mom's favorite authors, but I had never really checked out any of her materials, so I decided to give this a try. I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of "world building" and building up to the cliff hanger ending. It didn't feel like the ghostly elements were misplaced, or far-reaching. It all seemed like it could really happen. I enjoyed all of the ghostly aspects and the haunted mansion, and of course the romance involved. I cant wait to see how the next book goes!
Master-storyteller doesn’t seem to do Nora Roberts justice for her new book, Inheritance. The story has so many facets that caught my attention from the first page: wonderful characters with strong women, adorable dogs, and romance with sexy men. What could be better? Sonya discovers her dad had a twin separated at birth when she inherits a mansion, the Lost Bride Manor, from her uncle. Being a twin myself, I cannot imagine going through life never knowing her because she is my best friend. Along with inheriting the house, there’s a paranormal aspect with good and evil ghosts making the story so captivating! I loved the book and couldn’t put it down! I can’t wait for the second and third books in this fabulous new trilogy!
Hello and salutations,
Ok! I was so delighted I got to read this early because this is my favorite first book in a series! I had such a massive hangover with the ending!
I felt so much what the heroine was going through and to add that she had an uncle she never met. Whoa! Emotional overload! In true Nora fashion she wrote a kick butt heroine and her best friend! Love her! I can’t wait to get my hands on the physical copy of this book and reread it and pine for the next book. Thank you again for this amazing opportunity to read it.
Oh come on now!! I knew there were multiple books in the series but while I was reading, I was thinking maybe we would peek in at other characters. Noooo.....just the mother of all ciff hangers!!! I need the next book quickly!
Loved the back story and premise. The story is told mostly from Sonya's POV. We get the history through her dreams and through flash backs to different times in history. SOnya and Trey seem to be a perfect match.
This story is paranormal but with a spooky ghost story and mystery all tied together. Gret book for a stormy fall night read! Again--the next book can not come soon enough! It's been a minute since I read this author and I found the read fresh and well executed. Great story!
Inheritance is the first in The Lost Bride Trilogy dealing with tragedy, love and a haunted family.
in 1806: Astrid Poole Is filled with happiness on her wedding day. That same day, she is murdered, the killer removing her wedding band off of her finger.
Present day… Graphic artist and designer, Sonya MacTavish is stunned to learn that her late father had a twin he never knew about. Her newly discovered uncle, Collin Poole, has left her almost everything he owned, including a majestic Victorian house on the Maine coast. The will states she must live in the house for at least three years. She accepts the decree of the will and sets off to find out why the boys were separated at birth, and why it was kept secret until a genealogy website brought it to light.
Trey, a young lawyer meets her at the massive clifftop manor. Realizing Sonya’s hesitation, he explains, yes, the house is haunted. She soon finds out it’s not just a little haunted, it’s full on scary. Sonya finds objects moved and music playing out of nowhere. She sees a painting by her father inexplicably hanging in her deceased uncle’s house office, and a portrait of a woman named Astrid, whom the lawyer refers to as the first of the lost brides. Not only did Sonya inherit a house, she also inherited a centuries-old curse.
She likes the house and doesn’t seem to be freaked out by the strange occurrences. I would have been out of there within hours. Not Sonya, she sees a puzzle to be solved and plans to find a way to break the curse.
This is a solid and classically well written Nora Robert’s novel.
Great story, hard to put down, NOT happy about ending ;) I love how down to earth everyone is, and the paranormal is great too. I don't like Sonya's name in that the nickname of "Son" bothers me. It disrupts my reading while I make myself think "short for Sonya"
A fantastic story with all the essential elements! Sonya inherits a beautiful manor on the ocean from an uncle she did not know existed. Not only that he was her father's twin. It just gets better, when she moves in to the home as a condition of the will. The ghost are very entertaining, and her best friend Clio is a hoot. As events unwind, we more about the family history and Nora Roberts does not disappoint. I can't wait to read the next book and find out more the other side of the mirror. You won't want to miss this one.
Definitely one of the better NR books I’ve read in a long time. No fantasy elements, and the only sci-fi is ghosts. At its core, the story is about a young woman taking charge of her life and chasing her dreams, while learning to accept that the house she inherited from a previously unknown uncle is actually haunted by a fair number of ghosts and one crazy witch. You know, a normal everyday story. The book ended with a paranormal twist I should have seen coming, but I didn’t. Next book is probably at least a year away, but I’m super looking forward to it.
I received a copy of this book from St. Martin’s Griffin.
ADORED THIS!
What a great start to a new trilogy by Queen Nora! Honestly, this woman never lets me down.
Full of lovable characters, spooky adventures, ghosts, portals, a healing and heart-warming romance, great friendships, cute puppies, and set in a coastal Maine town... I mean what else can you ask for?? I was hooked from the beginning and cannot wait to see where book 2 takes us!
What a captivating and enchanting story!!
Rating: 4.5 stars
The first book in a new Nora Roberts' trilogy and she's done it again! Roberts does a skillful job of world building and developing the characters so you can see and feel the story as it comes to life, one page at a time.
The story starts with a betrayal that will leave the MC, Sonja MacTavish leaving her home and work to take up residence in a home, a very haunted home, she inherits from an unknown uncle. Sonja must learn her family history while also building a new career, plus live in the house for one year to keep it. Along the way, she has many adventures with the ghosts inhabiting the manor. With every new chapter, the story reveals another slice of the Poole family history and how Sonja must break the curse and save the Poole family. Of course, there's a hunk and a romance just to make things interesting. The end of the book is a cliff hanger......I actually said a bad word when I turned the page and it stopped, but that just means I'll be first in line to get book #2.
Nora Roberts has written many, many books. She's a very prolific writer but always knows what her readers want. This was an excellent reading experience for me. Get in on book #1 in this new trilogy and read INHERITANCE for yourself.
Nora Roberts is a must read for me. I always pick up her new books, and spend a good chunk of time rereading her older books. This was another winner for me.
Sonya is a graphic designer who just learned that her dead father had a twin brother nobody ever new about. Not only that, but said brother, Collin, just passed and left her a manor. She has to live in it for at least 3 years to officially inherit it. Since she is newly self-employed and single, she decides to jump at the chance. Trey is the young lawyer who greets her when she gets there and helps her out when she needs it. Like when she wants to find out more about the ghost living with her...
This paranormal romance with a touch of mystery is book 1 in The Lost Bride Trilogy, and one like only Nora Roberts can write them. I was immediately drawn in and I couldn't wait to see how the whole story would unfold. Who is the presence in the manor? Why is it there? What do they want? Why did Sonya's grand-parent not adopt Collin along with Sonya's father? The gothic ambiance was also really good. I am not usually a big fan of paranormal/fantasy, but I don't mind when it comes from Nora, she write's it in a "realistic" enough way for me to buy it. Know that this ends on a cliffhanger.
I received an advance review copy of this book for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
What a fantastic book! A very haunted manor high on a hill in Maine contains an evil, revengeful ghost and several friendly ghosts. The revengeful ghost takes the lives of brides on their wedding night and steals away their wedding ring. It has been going on for centuries and the bride ghosts remain in the manor.
A young woman inherits the manor from an uncle she never knew. He was also the unknown twin to her father. As she moves into the manor, the revengeful witch explodes with fury and mayhem. The friendly ghosts intrude on her life as welcome presences.
Just when you think the conclusion is upon you…a cliffhanger! I cannot wait to read the next book in the trilogy.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Graphic designer Sonya MacTavish is stunned to learn that her late father had a twin he never knew about—and that her newly discovered uncle, Collin Poole, has left her almost everything he owned, including a majestic Victorian house on the Maine coast, which the will stipulates she must live in it for at least three years. Her engagement recently broken, she sets off to find out why the boys were separated at birth—and why it was all kept secret until a genealogy website brought it to light.
This book was so fun! Flew right through it. It was atmospheric, eerie, soft, and tender. All of what I expect from Roberts
An intriguing ghost story. Sonya is a pretty strong woman. She takes catching her fiance in bed with her cousin with grace. When he couldn't let things go, she quit her job to go freelance. She never expected to inherit a manor from an uncle she never knew about. A haunted manor at that. She finds herself in the middle of a mystery with a curse that it seems she is expected to help defeat.
Trey is pretty steady. He grew up around her uncle and is there for Sonya when she needs him. I didn't really feel that there was that much of a spark with them. Made their relationship seem a little lackluster.
As always, I enjoyed this Nora Roberts' book, though to be perfectly honest, it does seem like a compilation of other plots, characters, etc., from older books. It is perfect for a light, easy read; however. I did think that the ending was super rushed, a real cliff hanger, and her previous trilogies were not ended that abruptly. I think I know who the 2nd book in the trilogy will feature, and as for the 3rd and last, who knows? Anyway, read it and enjoy it for what it is, an uncomplicated enjoyable read not requiring either a dictionary to explain unfamiliar words, or a brain worthy of an Einstein!
4+ stars. I'm really becoming a huge Nora Roberts fan, so it was a quite a treat to be able to read this one early. Most of the Nora Roberts books that I've read have been when she published as JD Robb. But given what I've read from her (under both names), I can say that Inheritance really did feel like classic Roberts, but with a gothic twist. Inheritance is a slow burn, gothic romance, that features a great cast of secondary characters with some found family vibes, a haunted Victorian mansion, and ghosts (both friendly and malevolent). After Sonya's life turns upside down, things become even stranger when she finds out she has inherited a mansion from a long-lost family member. And this mansion has quite the storied history. Inheritance is the first book, in what will become The Lost Bride trilogy, and I think it's a really strong start. As I said, this feels like signature Roberts, which I LOVED. It looks like the books will be a progression of one continuous story, and Inheritance ends on quite the cliffhanger (which I also loved). I can honestly say that book 2 has skyrocketed to the top of my 2024 reading list! I can't wait to see how things play out.
Thank you so much to Roberts, St. Martin's Press, and Netgalley for the early read in exchange for the honest review. If you're in the mood for a gothic, haunted romance this spooky season, you should absolutely check out Inheritance.
So, so, good!!! Romance, mystery, and ghosts! It couldn’t have been more perfect! Reminds me of the Nora from years ago and all the books I fell in love with.
Well, I loved this (but hate that now I have to wait for the rest of the series!) not a huge fan of the cliffhanger.
Sonja is a graphic artist who surprisingly inherits a haunted manor in Maine. As always I like the characters and the mystery pulled me right in. The romance was pretty quick - too quick?
An enjoyable read and I look forward to the rest of the series
