The cost of Sonya's new life and finding out how to be happy? One fiance, the unearthing of family tragedies, and a leap of faith! Nora Robert's latest, Inheritance, is the first in her new series, The Lost Bride Trilogy, which takes family secrets to a new level!!
My hands down favorite part of this series is that the main character explores what she really wants vs. what she THINKS she's supposed to want. That's a big one for many of us as we get older -- if you don't know what really makes you happy, then you'll always feel a little lost to yourself.
THOUGHTS:
- Loved how female friendships/relationships are portrayed! From mothers and daughters to friends and female bosses etc. When they were good, they were really good!
- This Nora Roberts series is definitely dipping more into the fantasy/paranormal realm. If you loved any of her other books like The Dragon Heart Legacy series - you'll probably really like this one as well!
- Awesome cliffhanger! I read this super quickly because I wanted to know exactly who committed that initial crime, and while the cliffhanger definitely left me wanting more, I still felt like I got a few answers.
NOTES:
- 🌶️🌶️/5 - Loved how the romance developed from that slow burn! (Closed door.)
**Thank you to St. Martin's Press & NetGalley for the advanced reader copy. I received this book for free, but all thoughts are my own. – SLR 🖤
What do you do when an attorney shows up at your door, telling you that your long lost uncles has died and left you an inheritance worth millions? The only catch is that you have to uproot your life, move to another state, and live in a house, sight unseen, for three years. If you're Sonya MacTavish and you discovered your fiancé in bed with another woman, your cousin no less, just weeks before the wedding, you pack up your things and you make the move.
As the stately Victorian house that she's inherited comes into view, it is love at first sight. The house, and all its character, is everything that Sonya had dreamed of in her perfect home. But she finds it a bit disconcerting that some of that character is provided by things that go bump, and make the walls bleed, in the night. As Sonya navigates building a new life in a new town, a malevolent presence is trying to force her out of her home and keep her from learning family secrets that might be best left unknown. Sonya isn't backing down. With the help of her best friend, hew newfound cousin, and the man she's falling in love with, Sonya vows to break the curse that has plagued her family for centuries lest she become the latest victim.
Inheritance, the first book of the latest offering by the prolific author, is everything you want and have come to expect in a Nora Roberts trilogy. Book one is a skillful mastery of world building, both past an present. By the end of the book I not only feel like I know not only the characters (this world and other) and the layout of the house, but if I had to go to town, I believe I could manage to get to the bookstore, the hotel, and the grocery store with ease. I enjoy not only the attention to detail, but the feeling of being drawn into this new life in much the same way that Sonya is. As she discovers, we discover. This isn't to say that reading about taking the dogs out and having a ghost turn down your bed or clean the kitchen doesn't get repetitive. Despite those moments, Inheritance is an pleasurable read if you are willing to have some patience and enjoy it for what it is.
Something I found interesting in this first book, that is unlike the other firsts of her trilogies, Nora doesn't give us a big showdowns along the way. Until the end, the skirmishes from our resident evil are minor and are given the same amount of interest and attention as starting a new business, gaining a new client or finding your cousin in bed with your fiancé. With the exception of one scene, Sonya's reactions to other-worldly shenanigans are fairly bland for one who was a total non-believer. Her reactions, or lack thereof, almost wash her out, if you know what I mean. Where most of us would need therapy to deal with some of the stuff she is enduring, Sonya takes it all in stride. She's gone beyond being the strong, capable, fun, sexy, smart, "all the positive and wonderful things" woman we want to be when we grow up, to being almost boring in how even tempered she is. Having said that, I wouldn't mind having a bit of Sonya's charmed life. Put up with a ghostly temper tantrum or two in order to have a Sunny or Molly in my life? Don't mind if I do!
As a long time Nora Roberts reader, I know that there is more and better to come; after all, we are still missing another heroine and hero duo to make up the usual six (I'm hoping the last pair will be from the other side). I encourage readers new to Nora Roberts to go back and read the last three or four trilogies. You'll get an idea of what we long time readers are willing to wait for. I think I'll go reread the Cousins O'Dwyer trilogy right now.
Nora Roberts does it again.
As a long time reader of Nora Roberts's work, I unabashedly admit to anticipating each years trilogy. This year I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Inheritance, the first entry in the Lost Bride trilogy. it did not disappoint.
Sonya MacTavish is weeks away from her wedding when she discovers her fiance in bed with another woman. Not only is it her bed but it is her cousin. After kicking them both out and then discovering that this "one time thing" had been ongoing, Sonya is determined to put it behind her yet her fiance just can't let it go. When an attorney shows up at her door and offers her an opportunity at a fresh start, Sonya grabs it with both hands.
The beautiful Victorian house that she inherits, and the sexy lawyer showing it off, makes moving to another state well worth it. That is until things literally and figuratively start going bump in the night. Despite random music playing, bells ringing, nightly weeping, kitchen cleaning (that one's a bonus), and blood dripping from the walls, Sonya is determined to stay. As she acclimates to a new town, a new business, falling in love, and learning about family that she never knew she had, she must also deal with a vengeful spirit who is seeking revenge for what she feels that Sonya's ancestor has stolen from her. Sonya must unravel family secrets if she is to break the curse that has plagues her family for centuries. If she doesn't she may find herself being the next Lost Bride.
Inheritance is everything you could want, and have come to expect, in a Nora Roberts trilogy. There is the supernatural big-bad, the feisty heroine, the intelligent, calm and heroic man who loves her, and the friends (whose stories will feature in books two and three) who join them to fight evil. Without giving anything away, I will say book one has a slight departure from this typical NR setup and we'll have to see how she plays it in the upcoming books.
While some find Nora's books of late to be too descriptive, this book has a lot of detail and most of it is needed. As someone who has moved to a new state, is living in a new and sprawling house, started a new business, is making new friends while maintaining the old, is dating a new man, and learning about a family that she previously never knew existed, Sonya is seeing and doing a lot. As the reader, we are along for that ride of discovering, learning, and establishing the new as Sonya does. Repetitive dog and daily ghost antics aside, the world building is excellently done and, for the most part, well balanced.
Unlike previous NR trilogies, there aren't a lot of dire showdowns between the prime evil and the main characters. Aside from some disturbing temper tantrums, there isn't anything that happens that would lead to Sonya's death (yet). This ghost is quite tame in her attacks, although she certainly is creative. Despite that the ghost has yet to be murderous (to Sonya), her actions would drive lesser mortals insane or at least running back to the cheating ex-fiance, who certainly might look like the better deal.
The book ends on a cliffhanger. For those who tend to get really angry at having to wait for books two and three, don't say you haven't been warned. If you can't handle a cliffhanger, and i mean there is nothing approaching any type of sufficient resolution to what's been happening throughout the book, then you need to wait for book two to come out before you even start book one. Otherwise, proceed and enjoy.
I received this book early in the summer and have read it multiple times already. I've enjoyed it that much. If you are new to Nora Roberts, this is a good place to start providing you understand her writing and release schedule. Book two will not come out until a year after this one is released. Book three, a year after that. She offers plenty of other things to read in between these books, including two standalone JD Robb books and a standalone Nora Roberts book. And you can certainly entertain yourselves with a huge catalog of other books and Trilogies, I recommend Chronicles of The One or the Dragon Heart Legacy.
WOW WOW. Nora Roberts weaves a story that engulfs you, makes your heart race and your fingers fly finding the pages to turn quickly. Sonya’s story and the the stories of the Lost Bride Manor are wonderful. A ghost story that I flew through. Can’t wait for
Book 2 and 3. Thank you NetGalley for the best ARC of the year!
Nora roberts is one of my favorite authors. This is an exceptional book and hard to put down. Sonys is shocked to realize her father who passed away had a twin and never knew he did. The twin willed Sonys his manor but she has to live in it for three years to inherit everything so she packs up and moves in. Strange things start to happen and she realizes the manor is haunted. There are good ghosts who do fun things in the manor but there is a mean ghost who wants her gone. A very good book. Can’t wait for the second book to come out
Nora Roberts is on top of her game with Inheritance. I loved this book! It's classic Nora Roberts with some spooky paranormal mixed in and it's very well done. Great story, lots of suspense, and I couldn't put this book down. I can't wait for the next in the series. I'm pretty stingy with my 5 star reviews, but Nora is in a league of her own so in rating it against her other books, Inheritance is an easy 5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley, St Martin's Press, and Nora Roberts for providing me this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
About: Sonya MacTavish's life is upended after finding her soon-to-be-husband in bed with her cousin days before their wedding. When a stranger shows up and tells her she's inherited a multimillion dollar estate from a relative she never knew existed, this just might be Sonya's chance for a fresh start.
Thoughts: Oh Nora... She never fails to amaze me. Reading a Nora Roberts novel is like the warmest hug on a chilly day. Nostalgic, magical goodness. In true Nora fashion, Inheritance has a strong female protagonist, loveable male love interest, a great supporting cast (including the best BFF a woman can ask for), a swoony love story, found family, and, as this one's fantasy, a haunted house and magical elements.
Inheritance is the perfect read on a fall day and I devoured it!! Nora takes me back to my 20s when I first discovered her work, and I fall in love with her writing all over again.
All the stars for Inheritance! I can't wait for book 2!!!
Thank you SMP for my gifted copy 🥰
Review will be posted to my review page around pub day.
It only takes one page to get me fully invested in one of Nora Roberts books. I especially have loved her trilogies over the years. She is one of my all time favorite authors and a guaranteed auto buy for me! This book one of a new series does not disappoint. Perfect for fall and spooky season! I absolutely cant wait to read the next two books in the series. Thank you to net galley and the publisher for the pleasure of reading this book!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Lately I've been underwhelmed by some Nora Roberts books, but Inheritance hit the mark. I stayed up too late last night to finish it!
Sonya McTavish has just ended her engagement and left her job to freelance when she finds out she had an uncle she never knew who left her his bayside manor in Maine - only condition is that she must live there. She instantly falls in love with the house but has a little bit of a harder time coming to terms with the ghosts who live there. It's called Lost Bride Manor for a reason.
This book was really good. I loved the characters - Sonya, her friend Cleo, Trey, Owen, etc. The only thing I didn't like was the huge cliffhanger at the end. When I got there, I gasped "WHAT" right out loud. Definitely looking forward to book 2!
I love Nora Roberts books! However, this book is not really what I expected and therefore the three-star rating. Nora Roberts has a knack for developing believable characters and writing great stories. She does this again in Inheritance. Sonya inherits a beautiful manor on the Maine coastline. Her uncle left this house to her with the stipulation that she must live there for three years to inherit it. I'm leaving out lots of details about her life and the inheritance, but it is a very elaborate plot that is too complicated to explain in a short paragraph. There is a problem with the house, it's haunted! Some of the ghosts are friendly and some are evil. The story line involving Sonya's uncle and his family is also very complex. Part of the plot revolves around brides who died within the first year of marriage in their family. I found this part to be very dark and just not the thing that I like to read about So, there are many things about this book that I liked, but I couldn't get past the dark and evil side. Some people don't mind dark plots, unfortunately, I do.
Pure Roberts. She never fails. Every time is a hit. Thank you for the title it was a really entertaining read.
'Inheritance' is a page-turning attention grabber from the first chapter; I couldn't put it down. A terrific start to a new series, I loved the characters - especially Sonya, Trey, and Cleo, and I can hardly wait to see what happens next!
I'm a big fan of Nora Roberts' trilogies, especially the way she weaves the stories to play out over the whole of the trilogy, and she one-ups herself here by giving 'Inheritance' a cliffhanger ending leaving readers to wait impatiently for the next 'The Lost Bride' installment to find out if Sonya's plan will work.
Recommended.
I set aside a current read because I was given a chance to review this new Nora Roberts book!! WORTH IT 1000%!! Nora Roberts captivates with her compelling world building and character development. I was swept away, into a world of twists and turns, that I honestly didn't want to leave!! To say that this book (like others from Nora Roberts) sucked me in, is an understatement. Immersive, captivating, gripping, all that and more! I want more!!! I have been a fan for years, this new book, just proves why I will ALWAYS choose Nora Roberts over any other author!! Only "negative" is the next one isn't ready cause I NEED MORE!! Truly a work of art from the master of romantic suspense novels! Can I be Nora Roberts when I grow up?!?!
I always get so excited when a new Nora Roberts series is announced. I love her standalones. I love her J.D. Robb series, following murder cop Eve Dallas in the late 2050s and 2060s. But her trilogies and quartets are the stories I truly sink into the most. While I have loved her last couple of trilogies, where she was doing new and exciting things outside of her norm by going more fantasy-heavy, I was also excited to hear that she would be going back to her roots, so to speak, with her newest offering, The Lost Bride Trilogy. Firmly rooted in reality with a healthy dash of the supernatural, it’s a romance and a mystery and, if Inheritance is any indication, a compulsively rereadable story that is going to stick with readers long after they read the final pages.
In Inheritance we meet Sonya right as her life comes crashing down around her ears. She comes home to find her fiancé in bed with her cousin. To make matters worse, said (now former) fiancé works in the same office as Sonya and embarks upon making her life a living hell after she refuses to see reason and forgive him for “slipping.” But when a cliché in the form of a long lost, wealthy, recently deceased uncle falls in Sonya’s lap, leaving her his (their) family home, a mansion by the sea, Sonya embarks on the adventure of a lifetime. The house is perfect. And very, very haunted. But with the support of her wonderful mother, her best friend Cleo, and the new friends she makes in her new town, Sonya is determined to make this manor her home. Most of the ghosts are happy to have her. But one will stop at nothing to drive her out.
There is a very compelling mystery at the heart of the story, that of the Lost Brides of the manor. Seven brides have died in the house within the first year of their marriages, multiple on the actual day of their weddings. A bride per generation. The ghosts of brides and their killer reside in the house, alongside who knows how many others. And yet, most of these ghosts are fairly cheerful. My favorite is one who plays DJ, always playing just exactly the right song for the moment through Sonya’s phone or tablet. That addition brought me joy all the way through the book. As did the manor itself. It’s a house with a ton of character and charm and hidden depths, with just the right amount of creep factor. I could happily live in that library.
The characters here are wonderful, as always. I love the chemistry between our main character and her love interest. I love the family dynamics of Sonya and her mother, as well as those of the Doyle family of lawyers who brought Sonya to her new home. I adore the friendship between Sonya and Cleo, who won me over immediately as a fellow Louisiana native. And then there are the dogs. There are three dogs in this book, and all three are wonderful. Nora has a way with dogs, and hers always seem like characters in their own right.
What I didn’t love as much was the cliffhanger ending. Strangely, while the two stories have very little in common, Inheritance had almost exactly the same ending as The Awakening, book 1 of her last trilogy. It’s a striking ending, but it’s a frustrating place to wait for over a year until I can get the second installment in my hands. But other than that, there’s not a thing I would change about this book. It was absolutely fantastic, and I seriously cannot wait to find out what happens next.
My favorite book of the year so far. A perfect mix of humor, heart, mystery and friendship.
Sonya MacTavish had her whole world ripped from under her when she caught her fiance cheating on her. Just when she starts to despair, she receives a visit from a lawyer who tells her she has inherited a house from an uncle she didn't know existed. The one requirement is she has to live in the house for 3 years before selling.
As she moves into her haunted mansion and starts delving into her family tree, she discovers a curse put on the young brides of her family. Can she stop the curse?
What a fantastic cliff hanger! I cannot wait to read book 2 in this trilogy.
Thanks to Netgalley and St Martin's Press for the ARC.
Thank you, NetGalley, for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Nora Roberts has done it again! The fantasy/paranormal activity gives chills and makes for an awesome Halloween read.
As this is the first book in a trilogy, the major plot points are a little murky as the world building is happening in this story. Getting all the backstory and world building was done at a good pace and allowed the reader to learn the main characters in a more enjoyable fashion than just a simple flashback.
The characters are well written and enhance the plot. Each character is multi-dimensional and feels as if they could have their own spinoff book. Cleo, for example, is interesting and confident. I would love to see a story with her as the lead.
Sonya is a strong female lead and is enjoyable to see her strength and independence shine on the pages.
Of course, because it is the first in a trilogy, it leaves the reader desperate to know more
With the exception of one recent trilogy, which I have on my kindle but haven't read yet, I have read everything Nora Roberts/JD Robb has published since the early 80's and am never disappointed. After reading Inheritance, my streak continues. The only thing I am disappointed in is that this first of the lost bride trilogy does end in a cliffhanger and I cant read book #2 yet.
This story is part ghost story, part buddy adventure and part romance and I loved it all. We have several flashback scenes staring in the 1800's telling us how various Poole family brides have been killed in a large manor house that our heroine, Sonya, ends up inheriting from a long lost uncle that she never met. Sonya moves into the manor for a trial run, and begins to have dreams that explain how each bride died and messages that tell her how she may be able to break the curse. She also starts to get to know the ghosts of the manor, many who will make you smile and one that will give you and Sonya chills. Add in a hunky lawyer, her best friend Cleo who is no shrinking violet either and cousin Owen as well as some great canine companions and you have a great cast of characters to take you on a page turning adventure.
Nora, I know you write fast but write faster! Thank you to St. Martins press and Net galley for this digital arc in exchange for an unbiased review.
I am now very embarrassed that I had never read anything by Nora Roberts. I loved this book and can not wait for the next two in this trilogy.
The story was engaging, the characters believable and the pace great. I do have to admit that the ghost elements of the story did keep me up at night.
Lucky me, she is a prolific writer so I have a lot to read.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my review.
When someone asks who my favorite author is, I always reply “Nora Roberts”. She is a great storyteller, and the reader will not be disappointed with “Inheritance”. This book has it all: engaging characters, and a great story-line, ghosts, a mysterious family line, a family curse, lost love, romance, a gorgeous location, a great description of shops you really want to visit yourself. I couldn’t help but read this in one sitting. This is part one of a trilogy which makes you desperate to read the next 2 books. And a darn cliffhanger so we must wait for the next in the series.
Inheritance by Nora Roberts was a breath of fresh air. I have been in a bit of a reading slump lately, and put my reading on the back shelf for a few weeks. But I was encouraged to come out of that slump by the prospect of opening the first book in a new Nora Roberts trilogy!
I don’t know how Nora Roberts is still writing such fantastic books 20 years on. By this point in their career, quality has slipped for many other authors I can think of. Not Nora Roberts.
Inheritance has everything I wanted: characters that are fully fleshed out and real, lush and descriptive settings, and a fast moving plot with the perfect balance of mystery and romance.
I highly recommend Inheritance by Nora Roberts. It lived up to her reputation as a generational talent. I’m now eagerly awaiting the next two books to come in this series. I already know they’re going to be fantastic, this was such a strong start to a trilogy.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me an ARC in return for my feedback.
