And, she's back! I was worried for a minute. I have not enjoyed her last few series or standalones.
Inheritance is a wild ride. I actually could not read it at night it was that creepy. I loved the characters (living and dead). Nora Roberts does description and detail so well. You can't help but to be drawn right in to the story.
My only beef is with the ending! Come on, that was cruel. I can't believe how long I will have to wait to see what happens next.
I should not have started this book! Now I'm sad that I have to wait for the next one! Thank you, to NetGalley, for the eARC.
It's been a while since I've read a Nora Roberts book, but this one caught my attention and I decided to give it a go. I was not disappointed! I was quickly drawn in to this story, and I NEED the next one, like right now! This one leaves us with a bit of a cliffhanger, so be aware, if you read it you will have to wait to find out what happens. But, you should definitely read this if you like stories about old haunted houses.
I was absolutely delighted to receive a free digital ARC of INHERITANCE from Netgalley.
I’ve been excited about this story since I first read that it was coming out. It is a story that spans hundreds of years, involving seven doomed brides and a current-day graphic designer who is unknowingly the key to solving a frightening and complex mystery. Sonya is about to be married, but she calls everything off after finding her fiance in bed with her cousin. When he makes work unbearable--they were coworkers at a firm--Sonya decides that it's time to strike out on her own. She has the support of Cleo, her best friend, and Winter, her mother, and she'll need it given the news a lawyer brings on a cold and snowy night.
An only child, Sonya lost her father years earlier and never knew she had any extended family on his side. But now she learns that her father was actually a twin, her uncle has recently passed away, and she now owns a manor house in Maine. Sonya moves from Boston to Maine, taking up residence at Lost Bride Manor. It's the kind of home she's dreamed of...well, except for the ghosts.
I really enjoyed the story. At first, Sonya felt somewhat flat and remote--until she got to the Manor. I like how her character gained depth and humanity as she settled in, experienced the haunting, and engaged with Trey and the other characters. The plot is intriguing, even frightening at times. And the cliffhanger of an ending has me on tenterhooks waiting for book two, which cannot be released soon enough!
Sonya MacTavish is shocked when she finds out she’s inherited a manor house and estate from her father’s twin brother, a man neither she nor her dad knew existed. In order to claim her inheritance, Sonya must move to Maine and live in the manor for three years. Recently single and having just started a graphic design business, Sonya decides to embrace change and takes the opportunity. There’s only one catch. The manor is haunted by the ghosts of seven brides murdered on their wedding day or in their first year of marriage, as well as others who’ve died in the house. A curse from a vengeful witch keeps them all bound to the manor. Sonya is enthralled with her new home and the town of Poole’s Bay in spite of the odd occurrences in the manor. She quickly realizes she’ll do anything to keep her new life, including going up against an ancient witch and breaking her family’s devastating curse. With help from her new love interest Trey Doyle, her best friend Cleo Fabares, and her new found cousin Owen Poole, she steps into a fight that extends across centuries and just might end with her dead.
Nora Roberts is truly amazing. There is nothing she can’t write. From fantasy to SciFi to paranormal to futuristic to historical and now to a beautifully eerie ghost story. Roberts’ distinctive lyrical writing style is apparent from the first page. She paints the most stunning word pictures. Roberts draws you into everyday life, people’s comings and goings, social interactions, meals, work days and downtime. The parts of a story in any other author’s hands that a reader might skip over, but with Roberts you just sink into and luxuriate. Roberts’ descriptions are rich and full. The manor and Poole’s Bay become characters in their own right. The manor gothic and mysterious. Poole’s Bay warm and welcoming. The Inheritance’s characters are typical Roberts. They are strong, determined, hard working, and kind. They have real depth, because Roberts invests time getting to know the main characters. Grounded and motivated Sonya. Calm and responsible Trey. Loyal and brave Cleo. Dependable and Solid Owen. They are characters you love and root for. Another spectacular read from the legend of romance. A fantastic start to the Lost Bride Trilogy that lays the groundwork for the next book perfectly.
I enjoy Nora Robert's books, especially the ones that are on the supernatural end, with ghosts and/or witches. This has both, and a curse. The characters were likeable, and the story flowed well. I am now anxiously awaiting the next book in the series!
Inheritance, by Nora Roberts
3 stars
The story begins with Sonya, a disillusioned graphic designer with lukewarm feelings about her upcoming wedding. Her life gets a little shake up when she inherits a haunted house and a centuries old mystery ensues.
A few things I don’t like:
Some of the characters use the word, slut, whore, bimbo, etc. a little too much for my comfort. There are extenuating circumstances, but they don’t just say it once or twice from shock or whatever.
If I were the editor, I’d remove those because it makes the characters that use them repeatedly less likeable, and it's more likely to secure a less favorable Kirkus review, or for some people to put it down immediately.
Some of the dialogue is a little awkward, particularly Sonya’s mother.
It was very slow. The plot doesn’t really pick up until a good way through the book.
Disclaimer: I received this as an ARC from NetGalley.
I should know better than to start a new Nora Roberts book right before bed because I know I'll get sucked in quickly and never want to stop reading it until it's finished. But I did, and I ended up finishing it in the early morning hours. This is for me another fantastic start to another paranormal romance trilogy. This book reminded me of Nora's "In The Garden" series but with a fresh take on a ghost story. What's better than a ghost bride? 7 ghost brides!
Sonya McTavish finds herself restarting her life after her engagement blows up and learns she has inherited her uncle's house in Maine. An uncle who was a twin brother to her now deceased father that she never knew she had as her father had been adopted. Part of the stipulation of inheriting the house is that she has to live in the house for 3 years before she can fully inherit it. Seeing this as an opportunity to not only start over somewhere fresh but as a chance to learn more about her father's family, Sonya decides to accept the challenge and moves to Maine into the Manor house. There she finds she has inherited some residents along with the house that haven't quite left yet.
I honestly LOVED all the characters in this book, but especially the ghosts. Without giving away too much, the ghosts really shined in this story and even the big baddie ghost was entertaining. One thing I love about Nora Roberts books are the way she gives details of a person's day to day life without making them seem boring and at the same time shows the progression of a character's development. In this case, Sonya finds her way back to herself through her work, the new relationships she cultivates and through the house itself. These little details might annoy some people but for me actually help set the scene because it makes me feel like I am right there with Sonya, watching her stare at her idea board while drinking a Coke. I can always picture the story in my mind and feel as if I am right there with the characters, experiencing and feeling what they're feeling as if in real time.
I did enjoy the slow burn romance between Sonya and Trey but some of their parts were actually was secondary for me to the overall story. Trey is a sweet guy and is the perfect compliment to Sonya, but I was more interested in how Sonya was adjusting to learning of her history and the house than in her growing romance with Trey. Also, Cleo is a fantastic character and I can't wait to read her part of the story later on. I am looking forward to discussing this book with my family and friends in November and for the second book next year!
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to review this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
I really enjoyed this book! In Nora Roberts fashion, the characters were lovable and I couldn’t get enough! I loved the spooky vibe and can’t wait to get my hands on the next one!!
I received a free copy of, Inheritance, by Nora Roberts, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This is the first book in the Lost Bride Trilogy. Most families have secrets Sonya Mactavish just found her late father had a twin brother she never knew about and he left her an inheritance. Sonya moves to Maine, where her inheritance is, newly single she is looking for a fresh start. I enjoyed this book, good story and characters.
I absolutely loved this book. It was my favorite Nora Roberts so far, and The Dragon Heart Trilogy only just recently took that spot.
I was skeptical at first - the story basis seemed a bit silly, why does this random girl in her 30s inherit a house (sorry, MANOR!) from a family she's never heard about? But I was quickly sucked in. Learning about those lost in the manor and their integrated stories kept the novel moving forward. Honestly, I often find Nora Roberts books to be the fun reads I stick in between more "intense" choices. Books that I can pick up and put down and not worry about falling asleep while reading. This one wasn't that. I desperately didn't want to stop reading, couldn't stop reading.
I can't wait to see what happens in part two! (Please send it soon!)
Inheritance is just the book I’ve been waiting for!
I’ve been reading Nora Roberts’ books for years and I think this may be one of my favorites.
The plot was perfect. The spooky characters. The
I will say, I could feel other characters reflected in these. Certain statements, conversations, personalities that seemed familiar. Not in a bad way, it truly only added to the feeling of coming home while reading.
I truly have never met a Nora Roberts book that I did not enjoy. Sonya inherits a haunted manor from an uncle she didn't know existed. It is perfect timing because she just ended her engagement to a man she found with her cousin. She left her job because of his harassment. So again, perfect timing to start again in a small town near the sea. Sonya is amazingly resilient and much braver than myself. I found myself anxious and hopeful throughout the first book of this trilogy and so looking forward to the next book. I couldn't stop reading and love the community she finds. I read this book on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Inheritance by Nora Roberts
Summary:
Inheritance is the first in The Lost Bride Trilogy by #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts—a tale of tragedies, loves found and lost, and a family haunted for generations.
1806: Astrid Poole sits in her bridal clothes, overwhelmed with happiness. But before her marriage can be consummated, she is murdered, and the circle of gold torn from her finger. Her last words are a promise to Collin never to leave him…
Graphic designer Sonya MacTavish is stunned to learn that her late father had a twin he never knew about—and that her newly discovered uncle, Collin Poole, has left her almost everything he owned, including a majestic Victorian house on the Maine coast, which the will stipulates she must live in it for at least three years. Her engagement recently broken, she sets off to find out why the boys were separated at birth—and why it was all kept secret until a genealogy website brought it to light.
Trey, the young lawyer who greets her at the sprawling clifftop manor, notes Sonya’s unease—and acknowledges that yes, the place is haunted…but just a little. Sure enough, Sonya finds objects moved and music playing out of nowhere. She sees a painting by her father inexplicably hanging in her deceased uncle’s office, and a portrait of a woman named Astrid, whom the lawyer refers to as “the first lost bride.” It’s becoming clear that Sonya has inherited far more than a house. She has inherited a centuries-old curse, and a puzzle to be solved if there is any hope of breaking it…
Review: 4-Star
I so wanted to give this story a 5-star rating, but sadly I can’t, and the reason why is repeatedly each time Sonya goes out and watches the whales of the cost of Maine Nora refers to it as sound, but when a whale comes to the surface of the water it’s called a breach. This is the first time I’ve read one of her books. I’ve always heard she was a great writer and I now concur with that. This first installment in this Trilogy is a page-turner and you can’t stop until you’ve finished and then you get so made that it ended in such a cliffhanger and you’re itching to get your hands on the rest of the story. The world she created is wonderful the characters feel so real.
Conclusion:
Would I recommend this book to others? YES YES YES
Is this book priced correctly? E-book is way over priced, Hardback priced fair, but auto and Cd form are over priced.
Is this book a full-length novel or a novella? Full-length novel
Would I read other books by this Author? Yes
I received this copy free for my honest review
This book was fantastic and I did not want it to end! It is the first book of a Trilogy by Nora Roberts and number Two can’t get here quick enough!
This book is a paranormal mystery that will leave you on the edge of your seat. The story is about Sonya who has broken her engagement because of her cheating fiancé only to find out she inherited a family manor house in coastal Maine. The house comes with a dark past and resident ghosts that do not want her living there. In order to own the property she must reside in it for a specific period of time and Sonya is committed to doing this no matter what happens.
Sonya moves in with her best friend and the story enfolds with characters who you will become emotionally attached to. I promise you will not put this book down!
Thank you NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press and the author for the advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
The latest trilogy in The Queen’s crown absolutely nails the expected highs: relatable, plucky heroine, loads of fast-paced dialogue, yummy hero, fab best friend / support characters, great setting. Plus, this series returns to the spooky side – my favorite. Plenty eerie and suspenseful without dipping into horror. The historical mystery segments also are way compelling, linking past to present. And then, you hit the massive CLIFFHANGER! Yep, I’m def in for books two and three.
Nora Roberts’ mixed-genre gems have hooked me for decades. The Garden series especially influenced my choice to pursue a similar mash-up style to offer entertaining, ghostly, fast-paced reads. But oh, to be so prolific and popular!
I wanted to love Inheritance, and there were many things I liked, but it just felt so drawn out and repetitive, with endless descriptions of Sonya's web design work and the (mostly) friendly ghosts banging about in her home. I'm not sure if it's because I just read The Heiress by Rachael Hawkins, but this entire story felt like something I've seen dozens of times. What I did like was that there were several instances where the author confronted cliches, but sidestepped, making a fresh choice. For example, the ghosts are (mostly) friendly and Sonya is (mostly) okay with them residing within the house. I also appreciated that, while most of these types of stories see the newcomer as a threat and/or treat them with disdain, Sonya was welcomed into the community and by the (living) relatives.
Lots to enjoy here. The house and the ghosts--fantastic. I love Poole's Bay and Trey and Owen. Sonya seems a bit cold, robotic. And I really didn't like all the details about her work. Boring. Might be interesting to others but too many details. Cleo is fun but again, the work details were starting to increase there as well. Certainly ended on a cliffhanger so I'm eager to read book 2. And I'm very curious who the main character will be for book 3. Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC
INHERITANCE
BY: NORA ROBERTS
About 4.25 Stars!
I saw this new trilogy and was reluctant to request it because I usually don't read Science fiction. I formerly read and reviewed "Identity," by Nora Roberts which I discovered that I really enjoyed her imaginative plot and character development. I had certainly heard about her for decades, but never read any of her novels until recently. I was pleasantly surprised by how gifted she is at creating entertaining escapism including well researched subjects in which she places her characters. So I took a chance on her latest first installment of a trilogy and I'm so glad that I did because I really loved it.
"Inheritance," is the perfect title for this Gothic modern day spooky tale with ghosts and a witch that inhabit a haunted Victorian mansion. Kitchen cabinets open by some invisible source. Beds are turned down at night like they are in a hotel only this ghost lays out clothing as well for the main female protagonist named Sonya. She isn't scared in the least often saying out loud that this is her house. When she is having a conversation her iPad starts playing a song having to do with what is being said.
Sonya has just cancelled her wedding when she gets a surprise visit from a lawyer from Maine who claims her deceased father had a twin brother named Collin Poole. Sonya is shocked at hearing that her father had a brother that she or her mother never knew about. Her uncle left her a Victorian mansion on a cliff by the Atlantic Ocean in a charming small town in Maine. She is twenty-eight years old and is a talented Graphic designer in Boston. She has just recently left her job to start her own business as a freelance solo artist. The lawyer tells her that she has to move from Boston to Poole's Bay, Maine and live in the haunted house for three years if she is going to receive her inheritance.
I liked that there is historical fiction woven into the narrative which features seven lost brides going back two centuries. I was impressed at the descriptions of the house making for an atmospheric reading experience. I had thought that this was going to be a standalone in a series of three. The ending has left me wanting to read the next in this trilogy. These need to be read in order of sequence otherwise the reader will be missing out on the build up of suspense that certainly resulted in a whopper of a cliffhanger ending. I'm hoping that the second featured follow up to this one will be written and available to read soon.
I did think that the slow burn romance was predictable and that disappointed me. I also could do without the steamy sexual blow by blow portrayals that are included with Sonya and Trey. Those are my only quibbles about this fast paced and quick reading experience which was wonderfully creepy. This has left me curious as to what the next two in the trilogy are going to explore. I have my ideas which are just speculation on my part. I'll be looking forward to the second one in this trilogy and this one by far exceeded my expectations. Nora Roberts fans will love "Inheritance," as she has delivered a page turning Gothic mysterious modern world meets historical fiction in this fantastic new trilogy.

Sonya walks in on her fiancé sleeping with her cousin a month before their wedding. She then meets a lawyer from a small town in Maine where she had an uncle, she did not know existed, left her a manor. When Sonya moves to town she soon learns that the manor is not what it seems. This book was very different than what I expected, in the best way possible. I’m really enjoying how the trilogies Nora Robert’s is creating have a different pattern. The new formula is really working for me. The main reason for the five star rating on this is it was very scary yet I couldn’t stop reading. Take scary with a grain of salt, I’m a big scaredy-cat. I can’t wait for the next book.
Wow! This book is a must read. I’ve never read a Nora Roberts novel before but I could not put this down!! I loved everything…. Except the cliffhanger at the end!! (Which, yes I loved… but I can’t wait that long!!!) I loved the main character, I loved the flashbacks, the mystery, the romance, all of it! I can not wait until book 2!
