I love Nora Roberts’ trilogies, and this one does not disappoint! The romance is not rushed, the haunted house is more fun than scary, and the characters are likable. Plus, I just really enjoyed the storyline! We were introduced to the couple that will be the focus of book two, but not book three.
The dialogue style is similar to what she uses for Eve Dallas in her In Death series. At times it can be hard to follow who is saying what, but overall it’s the shorter banter that would be used between good friends and fits the story. One thing that was a bit annoying was the use of the beverage “Coke”. It was so frequent that the author must have sold marketing placement for it. Or perhaps she was compensating for the “Pepsi” use in other books?
The ending set up well for the second book, but it’s going to be hard to wait until it comes out!
Much thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read and review this book prior to publication.
I love Nora’s books and especially her trilogies. This one has a haunted house, long-lost family, new friends, new relationships, very good mystery with some romance. I love Sonya as a character, and how things came about for her, and where they will go in the rest of the trilogy. The ending was SHOCKING! I have been reading Nora for decades, and I think this is the first time she has ended with such a cliffhanger. I cannot wait for the next one in this trilogy!!!
I am a long time Nora Roberts fan and Inheritance did not disappoint! The first of three books, Inheritance is about love and love lost through the centuries of one family, The Poole's of Maine, along with a curse that has followed them through the ages. The story is based around Sonya, the present day daughter of a man who died not knowing he was actually born a Poole. When Sonya finds out about her long lost family history, the story really gets set in motion and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. As always, Mrs. Roberts weaves a spell with her words that sucked me into wanting to read this book in one sitting! I loved the present day characters as well as the glimpses into the families past.
Overall, I thought Inheritance was a very cute story, with mild spice, and too good to be true friendly ghosts. The spooky factor was about a 2/10, but the characters are likeable and it's very well written. Not sure that I was invested enough in the characters to remember to read books 2 and 3, but it was enjoyable.
Inheritance is the first book in Nora' Roberts new Lost Bride Trilogy.
Our main character, a newly single Sonya finds out that she has inherited a large house in Maine from her father's twin. And it's haunted. Sonya packs up her life and moves in.
I want to start my review by saying that I am a die hard Nora Roberts fan. I have literally read everything she has written, so i was REALLy eager to start this new trilogy.
And I was SO SO disappointed.
Other than the business with finding out her fiance was cheating, there is literally nothing interesting going in this book. Everything is...perfect. She gets over the fiance quickly. When he tries to sabotage her at work, its resolved quickly. The house, the family, her best friend, her setting out to work on her own, new clients, new boyfriend, even cooking for the first time...perfect.
The romance, was so...bland. No heat, i swear it was like watching paint dry wondering if they would ever get together. I love a good slow burn. But this was not that. Usually, this author does an excellent job building up the relationship and sharing what both of our characters are thinking. This book, it was mainly one sided and with both of them, there was never any real build up. One minute they were friendly, the next in bed.
Now the ghost story. Now this part of the book was interesting. I felt like it could have moved us along faster, but it was still interesting nonetheless. BUT I will say her formula is usually to at least tie off one loose end in the first book leaving you wanting more. But this one ends in a cliffhanger that didn't resolve the romance OR the ghost plot.
Soooo, iIhate hate HATE to do it, but I must give this one 2 stars. Sigh. I don't even know if i will bother with the next one.
this is the first book in the lost bride's trilogy, I loved the story, the only thing is there is a cliff hanger, and you have to wait for the next book.
I received this book pre-release from the publisher to review.
Wow, inheritance the first book in the lost bride trilogy. This book brought me back to some of the original Nora Roberts books. The story was original and not a recycled love story in another location.
A surprise inheritance for Sonia McTavish of a house in Maine on the coast, adjust the right time in her life. She seem to take to the house right away and building a new life there. Despite all the bumps at all hours of the day, she continues to make the house a home will trying to solve the mystery of what’s causing all the commotion and why. She even finds new family members, builds, friendships, and maybe even finds a love interest. Come on it’s a Nora Roberts book, of course, she finds a love interest.
All the way to the last few pages, this was going to be a five star review. However, the story just STOPS🛑, in preparation for book number two in the series, I am sure. But I do not like abrupt endings. Thus, this is a four star review.
I cannot wait for book number two to see what happens. If you love the original Nora Roberts books, you will love this book as well.
I LOVED it! Even with the cliffhanger, I loved it. I read it in one day, then read it again a few days later in case I missed anything during the initial devouring. I like all the characters and their relationships, Sonya, Trey, Cleo, Owen, and their families.
The mystery of the brides and the rings is engaging, the haunted house amazing, and I think Clover might be one of my favorite parts of the book. Mad DJ’ing skills! I’m eager to find out the background of the witch and the journey to break the curse. I am assuming the next installment will begin Cleo’s and Owen’s romance and provide us with more information on the curse and the brides.
The only drawback is having to wait so long for the next installment, especially since I was lucky enough to read this one early.
Many thanks to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press, and the amazing Nora Roberts for the eARC.
This felt like classic Nora Roberts and I'm looking forward to the next two books and Sonya finding the rings.
Kindly received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Inheritance by Nora Roberts is a supernatural tale about a young woman who inherits a family manor by surprise allowing her to make a fresh start, but the problem is, she may have inherited more than just a house.
Inheritance is what I thought it was going to be. Spooky, gothic, mysterious, and cozy. Sonya is a newly single graphic designer after calling off her upcoming wedding. Much to her surprise, she learns that she has inherited a Victorian manor in Maine from her deceased father's obscure family. Wanting to make a fresh start and having no choice but to accept her inheritance, Sonya moves into the big old house, where secrets and spooks have also taken up residency. What follows is a cozy mystery featuring ghosts, a family curse, romance, and a bit of magic.
While I thought the story was a page turner, I did find the descriptions of the daily routines and habits of the characters redundant. More spooky elements and plot could have been included. The story did have a cheesy flavour to it, to the point it felt like a Hallmark movie, but the interesting storyline made up for it.
I really liked this book and I am eager to continue reading the trilogy.
Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a free arc via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I received an ARC and am always excited when a new trilogy comes out and this one doesn’t disappoint. A perfect setting along a Maine coast with an inherited mansion that has a curse and ghosts tied to its legacy. Knowing book 1 will only set up the story, I always enjoy getting to know the characters - in this case a graphics/web designer and her illustrator best friend. The legacy of the lost brides - one from each generation sets up the quest the group must take on to break the curse. This has all the good Nora elements — why I’ve been reading her for most of my life.
OMG!!! This book was outstanding. What didn't it have - betrayal, a surprise inheritance, best friend, a budding romance, ghosts and possibly a witch and don't forget a cute little dog.
Sonya was in for a surprise when she caught her fiance with her cousin, and then said ex-fiance kept sabataging her work. She soon quit and then found out she had inherited a mansion in Maine from her uncle (her father's twin that he didn't know about). She decided to go for it and fell in love with it immediately. However, something in the house didn't want her there, but several somethings did. I felt so bad at all the heartache that the house had seen, but it seemed one something had caused most of it. (at least the brides that died anyway). Trey was a sweetheart and is perfect for her. His family is also a joy. Such nice people. Her best friend Cleo moves in with her and helps with the super natural occurances. I really like the maid service, the music and the little boy.
It is a wonderful story - the only downside is how long it is until the next installment comes out.
Nora Roberts - you hit it out of the park with this one!
I got this book from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review
Nora brought her "A" game back with this book!
Sonya has a life altering run in with her soon to be ex and the course of her life is about to change.
And change for the better or so she hopes. A sudden freedom from all of her current bindings, a surprise inheritance, a new lust interest and things that go more than bump in the night.
Just because she doesn't necessarily believe in ghosts doesn't mean that she can't get into the "spirit" of things!
Plus, the new hot guy wants to show her the ropes.
This book was a strange Nora Roberts read for me. It had all the things that make her books great; a plucky heroine (Sonya), a perfect love interest (Trey), a best friend (Cleo), mystery, suspense, and in this case, ghosts! What I didn’t realize when I started reading is that it is classified as “Sci-Fi & Fantasy”, and that it is the first of a trilogy. Another strange thing to me is that it didn’t feel like a Nora Roberts book, not that that took away from the story. It just had a totally new feel to me.
The basic synopsis is that recently betrayed bride, Sonya is left a stunning inheritance in the form of a huge, spooky mansion on the coast of Maine that is also inhabited by ghosts. Really, not kidding. It seems the ghosts are killing the first bride of each generation and Sonya is the seventh.
The book dragged a bit for me about halfway to two-thirds through, but I kept with it and was glad I did because I was not expecting that ending. I’m still not sure what to think about it, but now I must read the next two books! While this was not my favorite Roberts book, it was still a legitimately good entry into her massive collection.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher, St. Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest opinion. You can never go wrong with Nora Roberts, and I look forward to the rest of the trilogy!
THAT ENDING - OMG.
I have no words.
I really loved this book, possibly even more than I expected to. Sonya and Cleo are BFF #goals, and add in all of the characters from the town, it's a recipe for success. The premise is super intriguing, things surprised me more than I expected, and I was engaged from the very first page. The *only* thing that drove me a little nuts was not having a family tree to refer back to, because I kept getting characters confused. All in all, excellent work, and now I'm absolutely dying for the next book!
I know Nora Roberts likes her trilogies, but this ends with a really sharp cliff hanger, dissatisfyingly so. The rest is great NR, great characters, friendships, romance, description, story, etc. just a real WTF ending.
So this was okay...my first time reading a book by this super hyped author and I was so excited but this wasn't anything special or unique... I enjoyed the writing and storytelling, but ultimately there wasn't anything that really held my interest. The plot felt a bit bland and so did the characters.
I really enjoyed the book, I was pretty disappointed in the end. I understand that it's going to be a series but the idea that there wasn't one bit of a small conclusion was disappointing. You have to wait for months for the next one. All of the characters were enjoyable, and the way the wives would include themselves or try to explain things were great. I wish the next one was already out. Only part I didn't like was how Cleo would call Sonya, Son. I know it's a nickname for Sonya but it doesn't come out right. There were a few typos, and as this isn't a finished copy it's to be expected. I did comment the corrections.
I loved this! Gothic, and it hooked me from page one. I've enjoyed Nora’s recent trilogies, and this seems to be setting up for another win.
Inheritance is first in the Lost Bride Trilogy series and what a start! This book is part murder mystery, part romance, and part paranormal read. Engaging and intriguing, I could not put this book down once I started it. Sonya MacTavish is a city girl who lives in Boston, works as a graphic designer and is about to get married. When her world radically changes, she learns her father was a twin, and her recently deceased Uncle Collin Poole, has left her an estate, The Lost Bride Manor. Sonya takes off to the Maine coast to learn more about this manor and a family she never knew existed. Together with her best friend, Cleo, her mother Winter and new friends in the town of Poole Bay, Sonya’s gets to know her new home and town in ways she never expected.
This is a delightful read, I enjoy the writing style of Nora Roberts and this is no exception. Nora writes a story that captures the reader, where the mystery is gently unfolded with teases and hints. I was bummed when the story ended and can’t wait to read the next installment in the series.
