I love me a Nora Roberts paranormal romance and this one did not disappoint. It hit all my buttons. Sonya, our heroine, is a smart woman and there are no too stupid to live moments. Our man, Trey, is solid. As with any Roberts story the characters are all well fleshed out and the research and details that go into the story are top notch. I love the ghosts! This does end in a bit of a Cliffie so if you hate that you may want to wait for the series to be complete. I can hardly stand the thought that I have to wait until next year. This is not a typical Roberts trilogy where each story is a stand alone.
I received a ARC from NetGalley so Thanks to them
Diving into the first book in Nora Roberts trilogy is akin to putting on your favorite well-worn jeans - perfection. NR does not disappoint with the first novel, Inheritance, in The Lost Bride Trilogy. Centered around Sonya, a graphic designer who has had two life-changing events in a short period of time and her inheritance of a several hundred year old family home on the coast of Maine that she knew nothing about, NR uses all her writing prowess and best tropes to begin this series with a rousing success. Readers of NR's books will be particularly fond of how well-developed are the characters and story. The cliff-hanger which is where the second in the series will pick-up was top-notch. For those who have not read a NR book or attempted one of her trilogies, this would be an excellent starting place. Thank you to #NetGalley and #St.Martin'sPress for allowing me to read this in return for a review. As easy as it will be to pick up the second book and dive in, knowing it will not happen until Fall of 2024 will be a test to my patience.
Full disclaimer: I shy away from paranormal and fantasy books. BUT, Nora Robert’s is a master storyteller, and Inheritance, the first book in the Lost Brides Trilogy, drew me in from the beginning despite the haunted manor setting.
We meet the main character, Sonya, as she is racing from one pre-wedding appointment to another. She skips one, returns home, and finds her fiancé in bed with her cousin. Now, you may think you have read other women’s fiction that began the same way, but Sonya’s response is different. First off, she is an intelligent and successful business designer. She has very good relationships with friends, her mother, and her bosses. She and her support group efficiently deal with the fallout of the cancelled wedding, and she does not engage in a pity party.
When she finds there are problems remaining at the same company with her ex-fiancé, she goes freelance. She is doing just fine, emotionally and financially, and then she inherits money and a mansion from an uncle she never knew she had.
Of course the manor is haunted by some of the many people who lived in it for the 200 years of its existence. Most are relatives, and all but one are good spirits. So, even a non-fantasy lover like me found it a fun read. There are historical flashbacks to the ghosts’ lives, and a bit of a mystery. However, my favorite parts are the descriptions of Sonya’s settling in to a new place and building her business. The banter between Sonya and her burgeoning love interest, best friend, and her mother is entertaining and relatable.
Since this is the first of a series, the novel ends with a cliffhanger. I will be eagerly awaiting the next installment.
I love this book!! I didn't realize it was a trilogy. Nora Roberts, write faster!!! I need to know!
It's your girl gets cheated on, inherits a mansion from long lost uncle, starts own business, and gets a hunky man story. But this one has ghosts, a curse, and a vengeful witch. We learn about the seven doomed brides. We have ghost maid service. One ghost communicates by songs. I would be out the door, but no one leaves!
Grab this book! Thanks, NetGalley and Nora Roberts!!
This was a hard story to read. It lacked the normal context the author use had. I ended up not. I have read several other books and love the author. Look forward to her next adventures
Inheritance, the first of three in this trilogy, starts out strong and stays strong. Sonya McTavish dumps her cheating fiancee, decides to freelance her graphics arts skills, and learns her deceased dad had a twiin brother in Maine they were unaware existed. Said twin, now deceased, has left Sonya his extensive estate in Maine along with a home that's cursed, filled with ghosts and a trail of murdered brides. Throw in a BFF, two hunky guys, various ghosts as well as a nasty, vindictive ghost and you have the makings of a treasure hunt to lift the curse, and get a HEA for all.
The storyline is quick-paced and interesting. The background info is well done and the characters are interesting and diverse. The plot caught my interest and I read most of the book in one day and finished up the next. Now I have to wait a year or more for the second book in the series and then the third. Oh well. Thanks to Net Galley for an advanced copy.
The QUEEN is BACK!!!! I have always been a fan of Nora Robert's work, absolutely fell in love with her last trilogy. This one? I got goosebumps. I was so engrossed, I read this in a day. I could not put it down whatsoever and I have no regrets only getting 4 hours of sleep. I look SO FORWARD to the next in this series, because the cliff hanger she left us on? OMG
Another great read by Nora Roberts! Kept me on the edge of my seat after every page. Pulled me right in from the get go. And left me hanging wanting more!!! Could not put down!
I want to thank St Martin’s Press and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review Inheritance by Nora Roberts, the first of a trilogy. I previously read Identity by her and liked it very much. And Inheritance doesn’t disappoint!
Nothing like a book catching your attention right away. First, the book takes you back to 1806 and a brutal murder. Then we get to present day and the heroine arrives home to find her finance having sex with another woman!
From thereon things really start to happen! Without giving too much away Sonya inherits an old family mansion in Maine. The will stipulates she must live there for a certain amount of time before it is hers. Seems the mansion is haunted by ghosts from the past. Bells ring, doors lock, the music on her tablet changes with current events and she finds her bed made, her clothes left out for her etc! These ghosts seem to mostly have lived in the house at one time.
Is she crazy? Is she dreaming all this? Apparently not! Even her dog senses something!
You have to like her and most of the other characters!
I will be looking forward to book two!
Inheritance publishes 11/23/2023. Watch for it!
In my opinion, Inheritance fits into the same mold Nora Roberts has been using for many years. Lovely setting, competent characters who all speak with the same voice and style, close to perfect friends, family, pets and community, very little believable conflict and noticeable overuse of the word “pretty”. I did have hope in the beginning when Sonya tore into her cheating fiancé. But she dispatched him immediately, turned her work and personal situations around and commenced with the storyline set in the haunted manor she inherited in in small town Maine.
This is not a terrible book if you want something cozy and haven’t read lots of other Nora Roberts books.
I received this advanced copy from NetGallery, in exchange for my honest opinion. Inheritance has the right amount of spooky, mixed with the right amount of romance. I do think it had some slow parts, I didn’t really need all the details about moving furniture through the house. Eventually we got past that and things picked up to a nice pace. I was shocked by the ending, because I didn’t realize that there would be no ending, I need the next book in the series now!
I absolutely love how Nora Roberts writes a ghost story. Sonya moves into her family home only to find that it is definitely haunted, but she is too tough and stubborn to let a few ghosts get in her way. Inheritance is the perfect balance of romance, mystery and ghost story. I cannot wait until the next book in the trilogy comes out!
Another fantastic book by Nora Roberts. If you like a book with murder, romance and ghosts you will love this one. The book ended too soon and I can’t wait for the next one. I highly recommend!
Mystery? Romance? Ghosts? All spanning over a century? Yes please! What a delightful beginning into my venturing into the land of Nora Roberts books! I had yet to read anything of hers until delving into Inheritance (although she’s been on my tbr for what seems like centuries!), and I think it was meant to be because now I am eager to immerse myself in more of her books.
This book was so enchanting, and I was completely swept away by the storyline. It had so many elements that I love in a story. Paranormal elements, mystery, murder, romance, ghosts, and a haunted mansion? Yes please! It was very much giving gothic-esque vibes, which made love it even more. Seriously, what more could a person ask for in a story?
Nora Roberts has a loyal following, and after reading this story I understand why; her popularity is very much deserved!
This story ends on a cliffhanger (and it’s one hell of a cliffhanger!) which I don’t mind and am here for it! Plus, I am not at all surprised by how it ended, because I was already aware that this book is the beginning of a trilogy. But because of the cliffhanger, and just because I loved the book so much, I am now very much anticipating the next installment in this series.
If you love gothic stories with paranormal elements, romance, murder, and mystery, then this is very much the perfect book for you.
I will definitely be picking up more Nora Roberts books, especially the next installment in this trilogy once it is released.
***a huge thank you to St. Martins Press for gifting me an early copy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review
Nora Roberts is an absolute juggernaut of romance novels (there’s like 15 pages of previous books listed at the start), and we know that “Inheritance” means three more! This time we have a haunted mansion “set on a wild cliff above a wide sea” and the confused new owner, Sonya (a recently jilted bride), who had never known her father had a twin, has questions. A condition of her inheritance is that she stay in the multi-million dollar manor for 3 years. There might be ghostly tenants, but the place has really good wi-fi.
Nora Roberts has a loyal following for multiple reasons and it’s because it’s easy to root for her main characters, the writing is excellent and the stories are interesting.
In this first part of the trilogy, Sonya does discover both good ghosts and, apparently, an evil witch who is connected to the deaths of seven brides. Along with lawyer turned boyfriend Trey, best friend Cleo, and distant cousin Poole, the house gets explored and more mysteries are revealed. Including a key to how to rid of the malevolent spirit. And, in expected fashion, we get a cliffhanger. My concern: when is the next book!!!!!? 5 stars!
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for a free advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review!
Literary Pet Peeve Checklist:
Green Eyes (only 2% of the real world, yet it seems like 90% of all fictional females): YES By the 4th paragraph, we know Collin has green eyes (and presumably his twin does, too). And by the second chapter we know that Sonja, our main character, has green eyes. Green eyes are a definite big thing in this novel.
Horticultural Faux Pas (plants out of season or growing zones, like daffodils in autumn or bougainvillea in Alaska): NO, it’s mostly set in winter.Sonya’s precious African Violet, named Xena. is almost a full-fledged character.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. (via Netgalley)
4.5 stars. The pacing on this was good. I read the entire thing in one sitting. The relationship between Sonya and Cleo gave me Eve/Peabody vibes and I am here for it. I also somehow missed this was a trilogy and after that ending I need the next one now please lol.
Holy cliffhanger!!! This book was amazing. I couldn’t put it down. Sonya starting over, her best friend Cleo, a haunted house! A handsome lawyer. What more can a girl ask for. I want and need more!!!!
Do not miss this read!

So happy I received an ARC of this new Nora Robert's trilogy... so sad I now have to wait another year and a half (unless I get an ARC again) of the next book. I don't know how she continues to one up herself on these trilogies, but this one has me so excited for the remainder of the story. It has kind of a goth-vibe that I didn't know I needed from Nora, mystery, intrigue, a bit of a paranormal ghost story, and, of course, romance.
Definitely do yourself a favor and snag this one up when it comes out in November!
ARC Review
I always enjoy Nora Roberts trilogies and this one did not disappoint. The only disappointing thing for me is I’ll have to wait until sometime in 2024 to read the next book!
This book was filled with plenty of gothic undertones, strong female leads and romance… I for sure will be on pins and needles for the next book!
Inheritance is the first book in Nora Roberts new series. Inheritance brings back Roberts gift of mixing magic and reality! It's so much fun to read a book that seems like it's just a normal run-of-the-meal this is what happens in everyday life stories. But then she puts her special twist on things. Between good ghosts and bad ghosts and really bad ghosts, Roberts draws you in to the story of what happens when something looks too good to be true. Who would not want to inherit a gorgeous mansion on the Eastern coastline? And, to make it even better, the town and its people are perfect! But the past coincides with the present and Roberts leads us into a dark path that for some reason we just don't want to leave. The ending of the book of course leaves us hanging. But I didn't mind because I enjoyed the story so much and wasn't ready to finish it. I can't wait for book two! I voluntarily received a copy of this book from Netgalley.
