Ughhhh. I was SO EXCITED when I was approved for this book. It has been a LONG time since I read Nora Roberts and I was really hoping that this book would help me fall in love all over again.
Unfortunately, I really struggled with this story and ultimately wound up DNFing. There was nothing particularly wrong with it. I just couldn't get INTERESTED enough in it to keep going. I'm a bit of an impatient reader and if I'm not hooked in the first few chapters, it's just not happening.
I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to read and review. Unfortunately, this was not a return to my love affair with Nora Roberts.
This was a fantastic really fantastic beginning to a wonderfully spooky romance. A perfect October read if you ask me!! I love all of her books but this one really hit it out of the park for me.
Another near perfect series starter. Super eerie & addictive! If you like your romance with a heavy side of gothic-vibes, old Victorian mansion estates complete with ghosts, and a centuries old curse…then this one is for you. Be warned, it has a heck of a cliff-hanger and I’ll be counting the days until the next book comes out.
I dont know how she does it. Nora Roberts is my favorite guilty pleasure, and The Inheritance is no different. I literally CANNOT WAIT until the next one in this trilogy!
3.75 stars. I love Nora Roberts. She’s an auto buy author for me; I’ll read anything she writes. I really liked The Inheritance. Sonya inherits a haunted manor. Seven brides have died. Sonya must break the curse.
This story had a couple issues for me: 1) it’s the first in a trilogy and I don’t think the characters were set up great in this first book. Sonya has Trey, Cleo has Owen but who’s the third couple? Who knows! Usually Nora sets the stage in the first book and it’s clear who the couples are. Secondly, the conflict wasn’t set up great.
That being said, I usually don’t love ghosts as characters but I loved the ghosts in this book. They added humor and warmth and dimension to the story.
I cannot wait for the next book in The Lost Brides trilogy. Thank you to @netgalley and @stmartinspress for the e-copy of #theinheritance. This book published in November 2023 and is available where books are sold.
Nora Robert’s is one of the greatest fiction writers in modern times. Her work transcends genres and the stories she weaves together are dynamic. Inheritance is the latest of her greats. I was completely enthralled with this book from the first paragraph. I did not move from my reading chair until I read the final words. I’m ready for the second book, ‘The Mirror’ which should release ~ 11/24.
Wow! A cliffhanger ending for sure and I can't wait for the next book in the trilogy. Sonya has inherited a mansion on the Maine coast. After a disastrous end to her engagement and quitting her job due to the backlash (they worked together) she opts for a 3 month trial stay.
The shock of discovering her father was a twin when they were offered up for adoption throws her off kilter. She's curious to learn more about the family she never knew she had. Along the way she meets Trey, a friend of her deceased uncle and a lawyer in the family firm representing her.
The mansion is haunted by deceased brides and other family members. Most are friendly and accommodating, except for one who's evil and twisted in death as she was among the living. Her best friend, Cleo visited for a weekend and decided to move on with Sonya. As their ghostly encounters escalate, and the mystery of the dead brides is revealed the author weaves a story you just can't put down.
My only complaint is that it ends abruptly and I have to wait for book 2, The Mirror! This was a riveting read
Although I received a free ARC eBook from Net Galley and the publisher, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I would like to preface this review by saying I love Nora Roberts and for the most part, she can do no wrong. That being said this book was not one of my favorites and it’s not because the storyline was wanting, it was because normally her trilogies are individual, complete books. That’s not always the case (like chronicles of the one), but it was my expectation for this trilogy. I’m not a person who can wait well in between books and or movies, so I read this with the expectation that it would be again a complete story that interwove other stories in the trilogy. All this to say, I’m disappointed with the ending because now I have to wait six months to a year for the conclusion of this trilogy.
Aside from the above, Nora Roberts is an amazing writer; her stories and characters never failed to captivate. The above paragraph that highlights my disappointment are my own idiosyncrasies. But if you don’t like a cliffhanger wait till all books in this trilogy are out. Regardless if you like romance books, I will always recommend Nora Roberts.
Identity by Nora Roberts is as always an awesome book!! I got caught up from the very beginning and couldn’t put it down until after reading the very last page. There’s something about how Ms Roberts writes that makes you feel like you are right there in the story as you read it. The descriptions are spectacular to where you can almost see the scene, smell and taste the food and drinks and enjoy the friendships. Identity theft, murders, and a psychopath keep you reading to find out what happens, but you also have family, friendship, and love that keeps you wanting for the good guys (girl) to make it over the top. The way Ms Roberts weaves a story keeps you entertained with nail biting suspense, chilling details, and eventually a HEA you’ve been rooting for since the beginning. You get to watch the main character grow into themselves, to find out who and how strong they really are. Absolutely loved this story and highly recommend.
I loved this book. This book is an excellent mix of mystery, friendship, romance, and spookiness. I did not want the book to end, and I am so happy we get two more books after this one. I need to know everything that is happening in the manor and what happened before. This type of book makes you want to jump into the pages so you can be part of the story. You will be left wondering what will happen next. I hope the next book comes out soon. I do want to find out what happens next quickly.
Loved the characters, the setting, the towns people, and even the ghosts. Sonya is a well written character for today’s time. I kept reading quickly as I wanted to know if she’d find the rings and lo and behold the story ended, I had forgotten this was book one in a series. Hurry and publish the other two books in this series as I can’t wait to find out the ending. So good, can’t wait to recommend this.
Nora Roberts never disappoints. Her trilogies are always full of magic and mystery and this one is no different. It's sad, it's comforting, and it has that Nora Roberts charm that I love. It has gothic haunted house vibes, light romance, and a dual timeline mystery. I'm not a fan of multiple timelines in books but this was done well.
I’m really happy this is a trilogy because this first book takes its time to develop not only Sonya and the people that are now going to be important in her life but all those ethereal who occupy that estate and there are a lot of them! Sonya is clearly at the center of everything and is embracing not only her new relatives but their history and the legend of the lost brides. It’s a lot to track but things happen that help ingrain it all in your memory, at least it did for me. There are a host of mysteries to unlock and I’m already deeply hooked.
I do love a novel written by Nora Roberts. Believe it or not, I was late to the party and only started reading books by this prolific author a year or so ago. Now I seek them out as new works are released. Inheritance is the first book in The Lost Bride Trilogy. A story of a haunted Victorian mansion, inherited from a long-lost uncle by our lead character, Sonya. Of course, the house is full of secrets that must be unraveled. This first installment in the trilogy does end in a cliffhanger. Although I do not care for a book ending this way, it was still an excellent read. I can't wait for the next one.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for a digital ARC. All opinions are my own.
Creepy and romantic all at the same time!! I wouldn't expect creepy and romantic to go together so well but of course, Nora Roberts made them work wonderfully in this book. I love the old, haunted mansion vibes and the author did a great job bringing the mansion to life and making me feel like I was there. The storyline was intriguing and made you keep turning the pages!! I loved the growing relationship between Trey and Sonya. Looking forward to the next book in this series!
Thank you, St. Martin's Press, and Net Galley, for a copy in return for my honest review.
Nora Roberts never misses. I have been reading her for decades and will continue to do so. I can’t wait for the next installment in this series.
Inheritance: The Lost Bride Trilogy: Book 1
Written by Nora Roberts
2023; St. Martin’s Press (Macmillan Audio)
4.25 STARS
Inheritance ended with a cliffhanger that had me checking my audiobook to make sure it had not just cut off. Of course, then I had to check to see when the next book was out (November 2024). Sigh, just as the action started too.
Inheritance reminded me of a bit of Roberts’ previous series The Bride Quartet and The Sign of Seven – a mix of paranormal with romance and friends forever. I find it best to go into Roberts’ novels expecting a good romance and there will be a plot that keeps you going. I don’t even like calling them romantic suspense, as I find them more heavy on the romance than mystery. (I would classify Karen Rose and Allison Brennan more in that genre). In saying that, I am not saying Roberts is inferior in any way, but just to describe how I rate her novels. I am a romance reader. My go-to for romance novels are the small town, cowboys and historical fiction…and some of Nora Roberts books. I am a sucker for her latter standalone novels with a bit of suspense, and some of her latter series. I cannot say I am the usual Nora Roberts fan, in that I haven’t read all of her books, and have DNF some of them.
After that ramble, here is what I enjoyed about this one:
-I loved the relationship between Sonya (the main character) and her college roommate and best friend, as well as Sonya’s relationship with her mother.
-the endearing friends are family and small town vibe
-dogs are big characters in the book
-that Sonya inherits a haunted house with many ghosts (and most are nice and helpful!)
-that second arc of an evil witch, who is bitter af with brides
-that this book is ultimate fantasy that will take you away from everything realistic (everything works out for Sonya and money is not an object, or much of anything else, other than the witch of course)
-oh and the food they talk about in this book will make you hungry and looking up recipes on Pinterest right after
-while a lot of the book is formulaic NR, so far there are only two characters, and sounds like the second book will take off from the first character’s POV. I am interested to see how it plays out…(and will let you know when I get my hands on the second book)
If you are looking for an escape this is a great book for early dark nights and weekend in. Let me know what you think…about any of this…I can take it 😉
***I received a complimentary copy of the audiobook and eBook from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.***
Also added to Amazon, Instagram, threads, Facebook as well.
You can always count on Nora Roberts to write an amazing story! She definitley delivered with this one, i was hooked the moment that Sonya walked into her bedroom and that is the moment her life changed!
This book was so entertaining and full of surprises. then Sonya inherits a historical mansion full of secrets and ghosts but she is very determined to uncover all the secrets and stay in the house. She makes alot of new friends in her new town, gets a d0g and is living her best life. There is a huge cliffhanger at the end that left me saying what just happened.
Nora Roberts has done it again and i absolutley loved this book, anxiously waiting on #2. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the arc. If only i could rate it a 10!!
This started out almost juvenile in its writing and then took a weird and odd turn. Just not for me. Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for this copy for read and review
I will be withholding all reviews and promotion for St. Martin's Press titles and their imprints until the publisher addresses the concerns of BIPOC and Muslim creators who are being stalked, harassed and feel unsafe due to the actions of a racist employee.
